As cute and charming as other Bookworm games, Bookworm Heroes pits player against player in a battle of word creation.

Bookworm Heroes is a worthy extension of the Bookworm universe. It’s just a blasted shame that Popcap decided to make it free-to-play, since almost all of its failings can be traced back to the divisive gameplay model. Does Lex cry softly to himself when the game is turned off? He’s well within his rights to do so.

Bookworm Heroes is a polished word/fighting game hybrid, but its aggressive in-app purchases ultimately mellow its charm.

Bookworm Heroes is a tremendously fun word game, and it's one that's packed full of fun characters, special abilities and addictive gameplay. But when you produce a game that makes even Zynga looks generous, you really have to wonder if there isn't still a little extra balancing to be done.

This is Scrabble X Street Fighter X Facebook, and it plays as good as that sounds. It's still not mass appeal enough to turn the heads of people disinterested in word games, though.

Bookworm Heroes may feature a cast of fighters and power-ups to aid you in your battle for word domination, but it isn’t anything to write home about.
