Falls more into the good to very good category and less into the holy $#!& realm. The graphics, sound (especially the repetitive hard rock battle track), and controls are all nice, but not unlike the majority of what you see come out the majority of Gameloft's adventure titles.

Devil May Cry 4: Refrain is trying too hard, while seemingly ignoring the device it's running on.

So, 10 levels, gun and swordplay, a really great combo system that has both style and substance, and really great graphics, this is one heck of an app. Dynamic action is hard to nail down in app form but Devil May Cry 4 Refrain is great.
  4. Feb 15, 2011
Devil May Cry 4 refrain sometimes looks impressive, but the repetitive combat and brain dead A.I. left us wanting more.
  5. Feb 14, 2011
Capcom fans deserve so much better than this.
  6. Feb 14, 2011
It's not quite Mirror's Edge or Dead Space, but if you like DMC, pick it up.
  7. Feb 7, 2011
Devil May Cry 4 refrain is too basic to be anything more than mildly enjoyable, its lack of depth, excitement, and polish preventing the delivery of a more satisfying experience.

All the component pieces are here, but given the severe control limitations the subtitle here should have been 'lite' not 'refrain'.

Capcom did a good job recreating the world of Nero and Dante on the iPhone, right down to the buttrock that accompanies battle scenes.

It's pretty enough and fun for a short blast of action, but doesn't live up to the DMC name. [May 2011, p.95]

The game leaves you with a feeling of mild disappointment and ultimately, the apathy felt throughout almost every aspect is what lets it down.
  12. Mar 15, 2011
Not a good porting: graphics look lame, and gameplay feels repetitive. Just for the die hard fans of Dante.
  13. Mar 1, 2011
As neat as it is that the stylish combat of Devil May Cry translates well to the mobile version, it still has a tendency to feel repetitive and button mashy.
  14. Feb 10, 2011
It may be fun at first, but Devil May Cry 4 Refrain comes with a large number of limitations, both in terms of gameplay and graphics. The game is far too easy, with infinite continue, the combat is oversimplified and the locations are too small and too similar to each other. It's still a decent action game for your iPhone / iPod Touch, but we were expecting more.

Without doubt an entertaining game. Yes, it has it flaws here and there, that if fixed could make it an unmissable entry in the DMC franchise. Having said that, if you are looking for a fun hack and slash action game, or if you are a fan of the series, then this is a must buy for only $1.99.
  16. Feb 7, 2011
Devil May Cry 4 Refrain won't wow you with its visuals or challenge you with its difficulty, but when it comes to action? It's got it in spades.
  17. Feb 7, 2011
Devil May Cry 4 refrain is chock-full of monsters to beat down, just don't expect anything deeper; the bare minimums for a 3D brawler have been met, but it's a complete let-down for the series as a whole.
