The graphics and music are also excellent, and really hit home for someone that grew up with the retro classics.
Like the conventions it bucks, this one escapes the faux pas of a potentially poor start, and gets exponentially better each time you play.
The player has so much more control in Super Crate Box than they do in Flip's Escape, and that's why I think that game works better with the same concept.
Sure, the controls may not be as approachable as its predecessor, and the game may be a bit simplistic for even an endless runner these days, but the implementation is solid, and the look and feel is a perfect carry-over from The Last Rocket.
It's good to see Inman opting for something other than a straight sequel, but this is one space odyssey that won't last you much longer than a pleasant hour or so.
A simple arcade throwback that is quite punishing, though exudes a certain charm all the same.
Fans of The Last Rocket will no doubt welcome the chance to continue their travels, but it's a tough sell for those who have come to expect a little more from their runners. Still, it would be churlish not to acknowledge that this is at least something different in a stale genre.
