As a free download, Haunted Hollow will give you many hours of enjoyment. It's beautifully designed, well-balanced, and has a lot of charm.

With homebuilding, a rival monster summoner, and the justifiably angry villagers, Haunted Hollow offers the kind of multitasking stimulation that is worthy of the attention of real time strategy fans. Granted, the multiplayer is asynchronous, but that makes the game equally welcoming to newcomers of strategy games.

Haunted Hollow is a very decent strategic game with a healthy free-to-play model. You literally don't have to spend a dime to keep it fun, which gives the game all the time and space it needs to prove itself. And when you find yourself ready to sink a few Euros into it, it'll have a diverse line-up of monsters at the ready.

With Haunted Hollow, Firaxis have created a perfect Frankenstein, having transplanted a fun, strategic, digital board game into the body of a casual, cutesy freemium app. It is a not a perfect game and the lack of a really strong solo experience is a serious oversight.

Haunted Hollow is an uncomplicated, charming, and fun strategy game that's particularly potent with pals.

Haunted Hollow has two mansions battling for complete control of the town below. Players send ghosts, vampires, mummies, zombies, werewolves, reapers and more into action to seize control of the town from the other mansion’s monsters.

A surprising little game. It manages to rise above the status of a throwaway mictoransaction-begging App by providing a deep and compelling system at the core of the experience. With a few more tweaks, it would be worth spending more time with, but as it stands, depending on your ability to play with others it may be a more fleeting experience.

A fine attempt at something a bit different. [July 2013, p.85]

Haunted Hollow gets a thumbs-up from us for offering something genuinely different on the App Store. But fun though it is for a while, it is a little rough around the edges - particularly when it comes to its premium purchases and AI performance.

A cleverly original strategy game that won’t be challenging the genre’s greats but does offer fun multiplayer at a reasonable price.

Haunted Hollow (Free, Universal) is a fresh new strategic board game experience that fits very well with the online multiplayer turn based structure. The game does a great job of balancing strategic elements with a friendly set-up making it worth picking up for a good time.

Haunted Hollow has so much going for it that it pains me to say that it could be even better. It’s a five-star concept that ends up something less in execution because of poor design choices, but that shouldn’t scare you off from giving it a free download and seeing if it matches your idea of a ghoulish good time.

Haunted Hollow is too simple a strategy game to last longer than a just couple of games. The in-app purchase part is poorly designed, there is nothing I would need or want to buy. [June 2013]

Haunted Hollow’s biggest fault is that you have no incentive to keep playing; the asynchronous multiplayer works well, but all you earn for successful Haunted Hollowing are Game Center achievements. No new worthwhile content is unlockable without spending money.
  15. May 10, 2013
Haunted Hollow is a disappointing game that wastes its good ideas with a gameplay that's way too limited and an horrific use of the IAP.
  16. May 10, 2013
Haunted Hollow’s charismatically ghoulish visuals can, at times, make for a cluttered board, and its decision to hide certain units and items behind micro-transactions grants those who pay more tactical breadth. Accept this last point in particular and there’s fun to be had with Haunted Hollow, but Firaxis’ creepy monsters can’t quite compete with its extra-terrestrial threats.
  17. May 3, 2013
After the first flush of excitement, Haunted Hollow doesn't manage to add anything to keep you interested.
  18. May 7, 2013
On paper it seems like a solid tactical game, however after a few matches it all starts to feel the same.

You only have access to a single level and everything else requires at least a five dollar investment before even another level is accessible. I'll never touch this game again. Full Review »
