Painkiller Purgatory suffers from unresponsive, cumbersome touch controls and huge frame rate drops. It seems something went wrong during the optimization process, and the result is simply awful.

Unattractive and clunky, Painkiller Purgatory is a shooter well behind the times.

When the basic, core elements of being able to move and shoot can't be done without feeling labored, it's a safe bet that the rest of its gameplay is going to fall flat on its face. Recognizable elements of the Painkiller franchise may exist in 'Purgatory', but you're better off avoiding this title and sticking to the 2004 original.

Shame on Machineworks and Chillingo for foisting this utterly broken, bare-bones app on unsuspecting fans of the PC game.

None of this justifies spending $1.99-$2.99 for such an aggravating experience. Going in, we didn't think Chillingo would perfectly nail the controls, simply because first person shooters don't adapt so well to a touch screen, but this gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, dropped the ball. More like dropped the ball, punctured that sucker and covered it in mud.
