The unlimited lives option is great, as it's still a challenge to complete the levels, but you can keep re-trying and your weapon power-up's don't reset when you die.

Hardcore shooter fans will no doubt love the challenge - including the ferocious boss battles, and the extended score attack and challenge modes. But I fear that casual gamers, or newcomers, may struggle to progress from the early levels and simply give up too early in frustration.

The program is already very difficult by default, and players can even unlock a more challenging difficulty to play through once they beat the program.

This game has a lot going on and lots of it gives Space Tripper its unique flavor. However, the game's controls and its difficulty don't mesh well and make it very hard to enjoy all of its finer points. Combine that with what is fairly high price tag for an app of this type, players may want to think seriously before adding this to their collection.

Space Tripper attempts to resurrect the hard-as-nails coin-op blaster genre on the iPhone, but the tilt controls don't offer the degree of control required for such a uphill battle.

A run of the mill shoot em up with an interesting control scheme and trippy level design. Sadly this does do enough to outweigh the game's problems.
