Despite the familiar neon graphics and side-to-side arcade shooter style, the included twists really up the ante and make this a compelling challenge.

Having played it on both iPhone and iPad, the game never falters to draw me in and understandably so. Can I go back to playing it now? Good.

Super Crossfire HD is an enjoyable arcade shooter, packed with a good number of levels and some very nice graphics.

Super Crossfire eases you in gently - perhaps too gently, because most of the first 'chapter' of waves is a dull walkover. But subsequent chapters are more demanding, requiring quick thinking and rapid strategic adjustments. Additionally, the ferocious Dark mode and one of the finest power-up mechanisms we've seen ensures this game is one of the very best retro-oriented shoot 'em ups on the system.

The game has a fast and exciting pace, with wave after wave of vector-graphics style enemies.

I found that I was so engrossed in the intense battles that I didn't miss such things as boss encounters, or extra modes to break up the seemingly unstoppable action. Instead it's good to see a game focussing on delivering a tight shooter experience, without all the fluff that can result in a diluted experience.

The controls are excellent and the visuals might be a touch more rakish, but what really matters is that Radiangames has found a hectic pace that lends the blasting a kind of cumulative drama. In doing so, this until now polite series has picked up a bit of an attitude.

Super Crossfire HD will thrill players of all ages, giving them a chance to cut through extraterrestrial hordes on the go.
