Though short, Amazing Spider Man saves the web-head from gaming mediocrity and delivers one of the better movie tie-in games in recent memory.
Copying so much from Batman Arkham City that it almost feels like stealing. But when the end result delivers, then I can´t really complain much. Despite a few flat textures the game delivers: nice animations, good voice acting, great writing and a nice way to continue after the trip to the cinema. Word of caution: this adventure continues the movie's plot, so go watch the movie first, then beat the hell out of all the bad guys in this fun sandbox.
Overall, The Amazing Spider-Man is one of the best Spider-Man titles to date. The well-written storyline and some brilliantly executed features make this game very enjoyable to play, though its repetitive nature and the lack of a real challenge lets the title down. This is definitely a game to consider during the summer game drought.
Spider-Man's landed himself in one more somewhat cockamamie story that doesn't quite work, but a slick movement system and a fun combat scheme do a lot to make up for it.
There are a handful of decent ideas here, but nothing within is original. And there's a serious lack of excitement; of tone and transition.
If Beenox had been allowed the time to build on that foundation - to add more life and colour to Spidey's world, to construct more compelling reasons to explore and develop your abilities - then it could have earned the adjective of its title. The Passable Spider-Man just doesn't have the same ring.
It's all such an uninspired riff on Rocksteady's Batman masterpiece, with the stink of a mandate from a boardroom to make it like that Batman game that did so well. But Arkaham City was built from the ground up because it suited the character. The Amazing Spider-Man is entirely borrowed.
