Mirroring the style of the graphic novels and utilizing the actual characters in a fun way, The Walking Dead: Assault is a competent, fun addition to the genre and an obvious purchase for fans of the series.

Even if you haven't been bitten by The Walking Dead phenomenon yet (horrible pun fully intended), if you like strategy games, you're going to want to give this one some of your time.

It is basically an action game from a third person perspective, but it adds survival and strategy to make it a deeper experience. The customization options and the possibilities to recruit survivors make it even more recommendable.

The Walking Dead: Assault ($2.99, Universal) is an entertaining experience whether you’re a fan of strategy games, The Walking Dead, or just some enjoyable action making it a should buy.

Assault is a smart and sometimes fraught blend of running and gunning with the highest production values. What's most impressive is that this isn't a genre piece with a licensed skin over the top, but a game that works themes from the series into its mechanics - albeit at times rather loosely - and combines this with a wonderful take on the art style.

The game covers the events of the comics up through the campsite, with at least two future updates planned adding levels up through the prison and beyond. Fans of the series will surely get a kick out of seeing the comics come to life in The Walking Dead: Assault, but the repetitive level goal might make you feel like a zombie just going through the motions before the game is through.

Taken as a whole, The Walking Dead: Assault provides a welcome change of pace from the usual first and third person zombie shooters, with smartly designed squad-based mechanics. With more chapters due for release in the coming months, it's a game worth hanging on to, especially if you love the comics and/or TV show.

The Walking Dead: Assault delivers an interesting, challenging RTS experience. Every character comes with unique abilities, and that's nice, but the controls tend to be too slow and unresponsive when it comes to survive.

It's obvious Skybound and Gamagio put a lot of thought and care into making Assault a true tactical zombie experience. The action is a little too repetitive and simplistic and the In-App Purchase upsell is too aggressive, but this is still a fun alternative take on the evocative Walking Dead universe.

If playability were the only thing that mattered, The Walking Dead: Assault would be an easy Must Have. As it is, the game is close to that score, and some more variety in the missions would probably put it over the top. The game promises new "episodes" soon, and hopefully those will shamble out with more things to do.
