This game will test your mettle in a way that will make old fans tingle with a sense of unforgiving nostalgia, and will make clear to newcomers just exactly what XCOM is all about.
Firaxis took the essence of the beloved 1994's classic X-Com and didn't just perfectly modernize it, the Civ-makers even expanded the great concept with new mechanics to deliver an even deeper experience. Thanks to the addictive gameplay, Enemy Unknown is easily the best tactical game since Jagged Alliance 2 and my personal game of the year.

One of the best strategy games I have ever played. Source of probability memes.Graphics & sound are nice, unreal engine 3 is used. UI is clear and easy to use. The game is divided into two interconnected parts: Strategic campaign (story) and **** strategic campaing requires you to research & develop technologies, as well as managing soldiers and their equipment. you also have aircraft and special operations. Building your base and technology timings are part of the strategic campaign as well. You must respond to alien attacks around the world and keep the council members (countries) safe unless you want them to withdraw their support. So, you have a council-backing mini-game, an aircraft mini-game, a soldier mini-game, a base-building mini-game, an alien capture mini-game... All of these are interconnected and provide a deep strategic experience.Combat is turn based and hits are based on RNG. There are many different soldier classes and abilities, as well as equipment. The game might be punishing, plan carefully all of your **** game features incredible replayability, difficulty and second wave options (added in new game+ as you complete campaigns in the different difficulties) extend the game's lifetime. If you are a fan of TBS definitely give it a try. I would highly recommend getting Enemy within expansion, as it adds a lot of valuable changes.Good luck, commander.

As enjoyable as it is reverential, Enemy Unknown is a superb reimagining of a favourite series from days past.
If isometric strategy games are dead, this is the best zombie we've ever seen.
Sure, online multiplayer matches can be great when played with friends, albeit nothing beats the feeling of slowly upgrading your XCOM HQ and starting to see the fruits of your hard work when your military leadership starts to match the might of the alien foes. So, again, it's more of a single-player treat and it's about time we had a game like that.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown lives up to its expectations, mostly, and is a successful remake of the 1992 strategy classic. Strategically the game is still as deep and challenging as it used to be, but don't expect a direct copy of the original. It's more accessible, options are more limited and the gameplay is faster. This is good news though, because it provides XCOM: Enemy Unknown with a modern look, while the strong concept of the original remains intact. It can, without a doubt, be recognized as one of the best strategy games of the year.
Despite some bugs and average production values, Firaxis convincingly restores XCOM to life: its difficulty, management and tactical gameplay are there. Very nice to explore, Enemy Unknown leaves you with but one desire: to play a sequel that is richer and prettier than ever. Get to work!
Unlike vintage XCOM, this incarnation removes player preferences. If you prefer females to be snipers and males to be heavy. Tough! Beware saying this on the Steam Forum! You find character assassins that tend to spend their lives hovering in this forum illogically calling you a sexist, misogynist and anything random with 'ist postfix. The price you pay if you have a personal preference. (Makes me worry we are moving into). You can dismiss some troops but it is costly in time & finance which makes no sense. As you play more and more games, its like the software realises you have a preference anyway and punishes you. You find it gives you more of you don't want.
Will I buy the Expansion? If it caters for player preferences (and includes base invasions). Yes and I'll even overlook the games other flaws.

Well if you are 10 yrs old and can't remember the original, this game will be awesome to play. However, if you know anything about the original, please leave your expectations in the empty box after you purchase this or you will be disappointed. How a 20 yr old game with graphics that seem older than that can still be more fun today than this game was is beyond me, but it is true. As other reviewers have pointed out the one glaring thing that disappointed me was the lame fog of war. In the original if you walked around a corner you could get blasted in the back of the head and not even know what happened, just like real combat. In this you walk around the corner see the alien behind you then watch it go and hide so you get a chance to get your bearings and attack, super lame. In the original I actually felt technically inferior to the aliens as I watched them dismantle my squad in a matter of minutes even late in the game. In this if you make it past the first few months forget about it, you are on cruise control from there. It's as if you switched place with the aliens and now you are the technically superior force, watching aliens cower from you. What a joke. I wish this let's make our game so the biggest simpleton moron can play it in the name of making money tradition would end, SOON.
