In a world filled with cruel gods, mythical creatures, lost civilizations and a struggling human race, the mighty barbarian has finally seized the throne as king of Aquilonia. But Conan's rule is on the brink of chaos, spiraling towards the doom of ancient evils. In this twisted fantasy world, dark magic and brutal combat lurks around every corner, and each man and woman must carve their own unique destiny under Conan's reign. In the true vision of Robert E. Howard's dark universe, it's now time for you to become a messenger of death. In addition to incredible graphics and sound, the game will be filled with unique features like the "Real Combat" engine; a revolutionary new multi-point melee system which allows the players to swing their weapons where they direct it, in real-time! This easy to learn and fun melee system lets the players truly feel they are on the battlefield, and goes head-on against the formulaic nature of online RPG combat. In 'Conan' you can also, for the first time in an online RPG, create player-made battle formations where you can command NPC's and other players in combat, making for epic multiplayer battles. The multiplayer game also allow the players to form guilds and lay siege to enemy castles, letting their catapults sing their merry song of death as the enemy is crushed to a pulp. [Funcom] Expand

  1. This game is massively superior to "World of Warcraft" and "Lord of the Rings Online" and other current high rated MMORPG’s in many ways and should be a game to pull players of all types to it if they are willing to give it a chance.
  2. The landscape is unbelievably beautiful, the battles are full of action. But why doesn’t the PvP ranking work? Where are quests for high-level character? Somewhere in Age of Conan rests the great World-of-Warcraft-killer. It’s time to wake up!
  3. Quests are staple MMO territory - but the unique, gory combat adds spice. [Aug 2008, p.72]
  4. Its well-crafted story, great graphics, and challenging gameplay make Age of Conan a great choice for those who have become jaded by the massive juggernaut that is World of Warcraft.
  5. Conan delivers the best action in the genre, presents an amazingly immersive world, and has a lot of room for emergent PvP gameplay at the level cap in the Borderlands. However, its heavily instanced design and lackluster PvE content offer little of note to more socially inclined players and PvP haters.

There's plenty of content at lower levels, but things thin out once you get higher up. Crafting system leaves a lot to be desired and we'll have to wait and see how PvP siege gameplay turns out.

The genre isn't in its infancy anymore, and developer Funcom doesn't have the trailblazer status that would grant easy deflection of criticism about unimplemented features and crippling bugs... Right now, Age of Conan is fun game to play -- this summer, it might be ready for the MMO pantheon.

I had high expectations for it, and that usually sets me up for disappointment, but I have nothing but positive things to say about this game after several days with it. I love the interactivity of the combat and the fatalities are great fun. The graphics are gorgeous - I'm taking screenshots all over the place. The character creation options are vast and I couldn't be happier with my avatar. For the first time in an MMO, I'm actually thinking about his backstory, his character, goals, etc. Good times. Very pleased with the launch so far and looking forward to growing with this amazing game. It's all I'll be playing for the foreseeable future. Collapse

The best MMORPG out there.. And its free.

The graphics in this 4 year old game is the best of all MMORPG. Eventhough The secret world have the same engine, AoC still looks better. The biggest argument for playing this game is the combat system. Its fun, and challenging, and its not push-a-button-and-run kind of game.

The Second argument is the story. The 4 main classes, Mage, Rogue, Healer, and Tank, has their own story. Also the setting is appealing. The Hyborian Age is like a dark, decadent, twisted and corrupt version of Euro-Asian history. Mix a bit of the Roman Empire, Mongolian culture and Babylonian mysticism with '30s-era myths of undiscovered Africa.

I'm just worried that it's the glamour of it all at first that gets people, I hope it's awesome all the way through. On a last note, I hope this game will run "ok" on my paltry 7800gtx (was the sh!t in its time though!) not to mention I hope they didn't mess up mages like wow did >:( I even have the slightest impression they have, I will never pick this game up. EVER. mages ftw! Expand

However, forgetting about gameplay for the moment, I have found that it is very buggy. I really don't see why, as consumers we should put up with a faulty product. OK, maybe Funcom will iron out all the problems eventually, and I understand the argument about how MMO's are very complex and difficult to bring out without a few bugs. But using this argument condones a situation that we shouldn't accept. So, in conclusion, what should have been a great MMO franchise has been spoiled by technical issues. I will not give any more of my money to Funcom. Expand

Stats weren't even enabled when the game was released, and we're still not sure if they're actually working or not. Quests basically stop around 45-50, depending on how hardcore you are about questing. Combat mechanics are terrible. They seem neat at first, but once you've used them for 40+ levels and start engaging in some PvP, you realize how awful they are. They're clunky, slow and unpolished. In your first 40 levels or so, you'll run into a half dozen bugged quests. Oh, and the entire world is divided into a bunch of tiny zones, and each zone has numerous instances of itself...way to completely ruin the whole massive, immersive world thing about MMOs. The first 20 levels of this game will have you believing that it's the best MMO ever release. But once you've put in the time to get later into the game, you'll realize what a letdown this game really is. The best way to describe AoC is to say that it feels like a bug-riddled, incomplete single player game that had multiplayer thrown in at the last second. Save your money. Expand

Buggy, Slow, and most importantly Boring. I'd rather go back to play EQ again than play this sadly =( Was hoping this game would be great too.
