You are not bound by fantasy stereotypes or archetypes, and can thus create often very bizarre combinations of races and their elements. It's a brilliantly done system, and one on which the authors will be able to build all their major or minor DLC for a few more years if sales are good. In an age of games as services, one couldn't ask for more from a solid strategy game. [Issue#327]
This is undoubtedly the best 4X game I’ve played in years, delivering top-notch exploration, combat, and diplomacy alongside a rewarding and dynamic customisation system.
The ideal synergy of Civilization and Heroes of M&M is what AoW has always been heading towards, and now we can safely say that they've done it. Many will say that part 3 was the same, but part 3 was simply impossible to play because of the graphics - a colourful mess on the map, strange outlines of objects and a twitchy camera, all of which made your eyes hurt.
Regarding the AoW 4, I sat through the very first map until 6 a.m., completely drown in the “effect of another move.” There are various small nuances, incl. disgusting translations from Englsih, which hasn’t been fixed in a whole year, but all these are small things against the immersion the game gives and its well-coordinated mechanics.
I don't really have time for a 4x game like this now, but I have been playing AOW since the first one. This game is beautiful and the city limit is really a good idea. I spent entire nights as a teen trying to manage all my cities and battles in AOW 1. Same in AOW 2, and other 4x games. It might be a bit much for a first time gamer, but the time investment is worth it if you have the time and brains
Undoubtedly a very high-quality turn- based strategy. The remarkable combination of Heroes, Civilization (4X) and Total War brings a large number of options that you can use on different maps, it's just a shame that without a full-fledged story. At first it might seems to be complicated and a little messy, but you'll get the hang of it quickly.
Age of Wonders 4 brings the franchise back to its fantasy roots, offering a robust system that lets you go all-out with customization. Whether you’re out to role-play based on your selections or min-max to come up with game-breaking setups, you’re bound to spend numerous hours just trying out new strategies.
The keyword of Age of Wonders 4 is “choice” – the game provides a lot of it, expressed in all of its mechanics. Lending itself to near unlimited replayability, especially once the ambitious plans for expansions and new content are realized, Age of Wonders 4 is a natural evolution of the series’ classic formula and will have min-maxers and role-players alike suffer from a severe bout of one-more-turn fever.
Age of Wonders 4 is a beautifully crafted 4X experience for players who like to dig deep and learn how to customize a game to fit how they like to play and be able to research through many varieties of choices and traits. The game offers some ways to simplify things for those who are more casual but definitely is something that someone could spend hours, days, and weeks digging into and still not be able to see everything the game has in its depths. While its overloaded amount of bookkeeping can prevent some enjoyment, what's here is more than satisfactory for the genre.
this is the best 4X game i ever played, the faction costumization end evolution is fantastic, theres tons of combinations and the game is still easy to learn and play, the only downside is IA being a bit stupid, but i never seen an strategy game without the IA doing weird choices.
While it shines with all sort of new features - I generally can't stand the clunky sector expansion, weird tome mechanics, excavations in sectors. The combat seems to be better though, with the % of accuracy + dmg scaling depending on the casualties suffered. Feeling somewhat neutral about the morale. The game seems to take Planetfall as it's base, which was a massive dislike for me due to overwhelming similarity to the Endless series.
