  1. Rampaging counter-measures aside; Battlefield 2142 is the latest and greatest release in the series and is well worth every pound/dollar/euro.
  2. As a new title, Battlefield 2142 holds its own. For a team-based shooter, you can,t do much better with what,s available today, and if you,re looking for a game to move your clan to, this may be what you,re looking for.
  3. Battlefield 2142 delivers a sci-fi themed experience using the familiar Battlefield style. While the setting may have changed a bit, the overall gameplay hasn't.
  4. Instead of just tacking some curvaceous metal scraps onto otherwise ordinary buildings, the maps feature a cohesive vision of the not-too-distant future.
  5. It's a great experience jumping off of an exploding Titan and surviving, knowing it was your DemoPaks that blew up the reactor core.
  6. Battlefield 2142 is more of a mod of the very well made Battlefield 2, but still a must for online gamers.
  7. A great game. However, it isn’t as big of an improvement as "Battlefield 2" was over "Battlefield 1942." The new ranking system and unlocks will definitely keep fans of the series coming back for more.
  8. Not a mind-blowing leap above "Battlefield 2," but worth a return to the trenches. [Holiday 2006, p.58]
  9. Battlefield 2142 may adhere to the familiar Battlefield formula, but its still gangs of fun to play.
  10. It's certainly not gong to supersede the increasingy popular "Battlefield 2," as most of its merits merely held over from its predecessor, but nevertheless it's a brilliant evolution of one of the greatest online shooters ever made. And it's got giant walking tanks. [Dec 2006, p.62]
  11. Bottom line is I had loads of fun playing BF 2142 in multiplayer.
  12. Little more than "Battlefield 2" with mechs and gunships. In nearly every way, a round of 2142 plays out exactly like a round of its predecessor. Not that that’s a particularly bad thing, but for all intents and purposes this is a $50 mod.
  13. Battlefield 2142 steps over Battlefield 2 in terms of graphics, gameplay, multiplayer ranks, unlocks, and game modes. Right out of the box it offers more variety in terms of selecting different game modes, more customizations in options, and a larger map selection with better maps.
  14. A solid multiplayer game just like its predecessors. The new Titan mode is a lot of fun but sometimes it suffers from severe lag issues. The large amount of unlocks is both a blessing and a curse. [Dec 2006, p.82]

Battlefield 2142 might not be extraordinary, but it still got excitement and fun.
  16. An incremental step forward for the series, but the new Titan mode is sure to appeal to many of the series' veterans.
  17. While still not meeting the revolution that 1942 was, the addition of Titan mode makes it feel more than “another year, another title” but it’s cutting it close.
  18. The change of theme makes it all feel fresh again, the new mode adds special moments of its own, and the technological streamlining makes it approximately 15 minutes easier to jump into a game. [Dec 2006, p.106]
  19. The game is rock solid and balanced so that experienced gamers and new players can get the hang of the game and soon be hooked on the action and teamwork it brings while working towards that next unlock.
  20. While Battlefield 2142 could stand to remind us a little less of Battlefield 2, its awesome technology has shown us a future worth paying for and dying in.
  21. Even if EA does use its nefarious in-game advertising system to find your precious information/porn/illegally downloaded music and movies and try to sell you similar items, Battlefield 2142 is undeniably a new and enjoyable step for a franchise that has so far not strayed away from historical or topical content.
  22. Small but perfectly formed; a great addition rather than a proper sequel. [Christmas 2006, p.86]
  23. Battlefield 2142's new Titan mode is an exciting new addition to the Battlefield series, though for the most part 2142 offers up minor evolutionary improvements over its illustrious predecessor.
  24. BF2142 fails to stimulate to the same levels as previous titles in the series, all of which have benefited from a more solid grounding in real-world settings and situations. [Dec 2006, p.87]
  25. Despite a few issues, the gameplay experience in Battlefield 2142 is overwhelmingly positive - this is a rock solid shooter that requires your twitch skills as well as strategic planning and extensive use of group tactics. The sense of immersion is enthralling.
  26. While rough around the edges, the franchise still wears the crown of best team-based experience in gaming today - for now.
  27. This is definitely a case of evolution over revolution and, although the franchise makes a confident leap into the future, 2142's engine and gameplay are firmly rooted in the past. The action is still fast and frantic, the warfare is epic and exciting and the loading times remain as excruciating as ever.
  28. I can’t help but feel this is a slight step backwards from Battlefield 2. Removing features players are used to just seems strange to me, and the levels don’t really provide an interesting backdrop. But the improved interface is a plus.
  29. If you enjoy this brand of FPS gameplay at all, you'll probably want to play BF 2142 for the Titan maps and vehicles. They rule. [Nov. 2006, p.92]
  30. Unfortunately, Titan mode is not playable with bots.

While I feel the forced replay feature tied in with unlocking weapons is a cheap way to extend the game time, others may find that portion right up their alley.
  32. There’s some great multiplayer action to be had here, but depending on your familiarity level with the series, you might have already experienced the best that this title has to offer.
  33. Ultimately, Battlefield 2142 is a game for the hardcore player. If you've logged endless hours into Battlefield 2, you're going to love the new class tweaks and you'll probably have half of the unlocks within the first week.
  34. And, in terms of design, there's still no better way to go online and shoot people than DICE's battlefield games. [Jan. 2007, p.54]
  35. While it is probably not as good as Battlefield 2, it's very hard to top what is seen as the number one multiplayer game.
  36. Despite the bugs and ads this is still a great game. In a way the Battlefield series is a lot like sex and pizza, even when they are bad they are still not all bad.
  37. With only 10 maps, a lackluster new game mode, and the only interesting modification being the infantry system, it’s hard to justify the $50 dollar price tag. But if players enjoy futuristic large scale battles and they’re already a fan of the series, then 2142 is obviously their best option.
  38. Such ordinariness only reinforces the nagging sense that this is the same game with bits bolted on. That's always the case with Battlefield games, but this time it's too little, too soon. [Dec 2006, p.110]
  39. It really wasn’t made with anyone in mind except for longtime players of the series—who will doubtlessly buy it, enjoy themselves, and continue playing it until DICE decides what era the next game will take place in. Which is what makes this game completely review-proof.
  40. 75
Whilst not being overly different from the previous Battlefield games it does offer significant improvements and additions to gameplay to make it an extremely good game. A few bugs bring it down a little.
  41. 75
Battlefield, in its best moments, is one of the most perfect and pure online experiences around. It's too bad 2142 isn't a major evolution over the titles that came before it but it's entertaining enough, and as the old saying goes, you shouldn't look a gift hovertank in the mouth.
  42. To be truthful, Titan mode is really the only significant addition to the game. This could just as easily have been an expansion pack for Battlefield 2, featuring Titan.
  43. 72
Ignoring the annoying so-called 'geographically appropriate' ads , Battlefield 2142 is a title bound to please fans of the series.
  44. Battlefield 2142 may be a glimpse of the future of games. I'm just not sure that I like it.
  45. My only issue with it, honestly, is that DICE hasn’t really made an effort to change anything substantial about the game in five years.
  46. Yes, it's fun, but nothing really new enough to warrant a recommendation. Die-hard Battlefield fans will see plenty of value, all others should stick with what they already have.
  47. 60
What's in question here isn't whether this or that technology is hooey -- it's impoverished, store-brand imagination.
  48. Fails to offer anything fresh. The new elements added to the franchise are shamelessly plundered from other games, and generally not as well executed. [Dec 2006, p.114]
