Pros:Fast pace game and its fun when you get kills easily.I can plug in a xbox 360 controller and sit back and relax after a days work.
CONS:I'm a cod fan,and i'm pretty much disappointed in the PC version of this. Many broken promise(such as mod tools),not optimized for dual core and people with quad cores are having problems running this game.

Ran badly on my PC, multi player is boring, single player is dreadfully boring.
Might of given this a good review if I wasn't spoiled by better games.
Go play Half-Life 2 or Portal 2 or any game but this.

As you can read before me, this game a total money stealing. I bought when it came out on steam..... well which problems should I mention first..., first of all on windows 7 if you dont have a jerk 10.000 dollar game rig then you will be forced to change back to windows xp,as I did, by the way my computer is: gtx460 1gb, 12 gb ram, amd phenomII T 1090, so pretty much this should way outperform the needs on the highest settings, but in this game not, its on windows xp I still have 91 fps, in actions I usually get a 1 sec suddenly fps drop/freeze and cant shot the guy what I would like to (and of course I get killed :D) and this is just the graphics, the game play is really annoying too, the most annoying is that the game spawns the enemy in your back, you cant go on the map like, in a good teamwork , you clean an area on the map and heading toward, there will be always somebody in the cleaned are who gonna shoot you in the back and you will go nuts, another thing is the knife kill, its just soo unbelievable ridiculous, that is already hurt, first of all the knife kill have too big range, I mean you can knife or can be knifed from too far, on the killcam is seems like the guy just suddenly teleports there and knife you, really annoying, also when you already hit the guy really badly shooting his face, his monitor looks like all blood and than he just knife you, really annoying in close combat, I mean its good that you have a chance to take down the enemy fast with 1 slash, but when you shoot the guy's face and than he just beats you with a knife kill.... you gonna push the ESC button and click on the "exit game" option :D, second with marathon pro (unlimited run) and a ballistic knife (2 knife in hand, and you can shoot 1 out for further kill) you can actually run trough the hole team and kill everybody with it, which is funny , but for only 1 person, thats actually on "small" maps. Maps: all the maps are small, the hole game everytime is just all about that you run in circle and circle again on the map and kill people, you just chase the people in circles on the map nothing alse just shoot, which after a while will be boring, yeah you can earn killstreaks, like RCXD (which is actually really fun), chopper gunner, or be a pilot in a chopper and than shoot the **** out of the gamers for like 30 seconds or until they not shoot you down, but there is nothing any different thing what you can do, just run and shoot..., the game made for maniacs, its ridiculous, they made the prestige system (unlock things, weapon create slots, and face paints, logos, etc....) for jerks, to unlock all the 5 remaining weapon slot, you should restart the hole stuff what you can earn in the game 13 times , perks, money, everything what you can unlock, weapons, awards, its just the most ridiculous thing what I have ever seen, the last homeless wants to start the game 13 times, they think about gamers like brainless idiots who just play all the time, dont have life.... for 60 bucks the game should be more entertaining then annoying! For 60 bucks you cant put for example a silencer on a gun and a shotgun attachment, is that in real cant happen or what...? Treyarch is the worst game developer what I have ever seen, the prestige system pointless, the graphics disappointing, the single player have more guns, than the multiplayer, sweat guns what you can have in multi, you have a fairly big variation, but it feels like they dont give you all of them, lot of gun which is popular and famous its just not included in the game, which is again a big bull****ting against the gamers, for 60 bucks!!! (and another 15 for the DLC :/). There is a ping thing here too, if the guy have 10-20 less ping then you, you can count on it, that he gonna see you faster when both of you look over the cover. There is "no" headshot, in hardcore mode people get the headshot, but actually in hardcore mode all person is 1hit, in standard mode if you shoot 2-3 times in head the guy still didnt die, just after that, and really really hard to shoot headshot, most of the times is just lucky shot or push the botton skill..., which is you know what it is..., not worth the 60 bucks at all. I whish i could get my money back, but steam dont give money back..., anyway a big disappoiting. The only thing why I bought it, because the Modern warfare 2 was awesome and I thought the next generation of call of duty could be more awesome, a HUGE mistake, I usually read, watch gameplayes after the games what I planning to buy, I believed in call of duty that they gonna overawe every of their game, enormous mistake, dont buy it, my last words! I was one of the first (couple thousand) people to play Black Ops, being in Australia we had a good 8 hour headstart on the Americans, I had the game installed and "running" by 12:18 am. To start off, even the menu was buggy as hell on my gaming PC which is way over the requirements for this game. a few of my friends were asking if my main menu was working properly, as many of theirs only had black screens. The multpilayer wasn't playable at best, as every single server in the world was american run, we're talking 400+ ping minimum. it took another 2 days for the serveres to become local. The Campaign was forgettable and utterly disappointing. It wasn't a twist, it was a WTF?! my first thought was "REFUND!" even after the local servers came online, game play was still extremely buggy. guess thats what you get for not beta testing hey? only the promise 0f patches and updates kept me from returning to the store, alas, they only proved to be further disappointments. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME ON PC!!!

Highly unoriginal. A LARGE waste of money considering all the games in the past that are just like it. If you have lived under a rock for 5 years and missed the games that this clones, Id give it a 6. The solo missions are neat climatically if you ignore all the blood on the screen and superhuman feats that jon Mclain would laugh at, but the gameplay is just terrible. People have been saying it for years. Then they forgive it for its decent multi player (far to fast paced and ramboish for my tastes. Do the history of gaming a favor and SKIP THIS!! Expand

geat multiplayer since most hackers were recently banned. after numerous patches the game is finally enjoyable and addicting to play. search and destroy is super fun and prestige in this game is actually worth it because u get gold guns at level 14. the single player is like a rambo linear mission but it worth playing about half way. the real fun is multiplayer but i urge you to set everything in your config to low even if u have a powerful system to remain competitive you need 100 fps. black ops is the best multiplayer community since far cry. its like the best of CSS and modern warfare mixed into one. maps are however very dull so i give it a 9. looking forward to mw3 which i believe will be epic. One of the most balanced Call of Duty games to date. The single player is great, the Zombie Co-Op is a masterpiece within the zombie games and the multiplayer is balanced. Although some weapons seem overpowered, Treyarch has done a great job increasing the player's health so we can counter-act the so-called "overpowered weapons" in time. Treyarch does our job by patching for performance issues to low-rigged computers, nerfing the weapons to become pretty balanced and preparing us mod tools to May. The dedicated servers has turned the tables from the failing Modern Warfare 2. Probably the second best CoD game, second only to the masterpiece CoD4, Call of Duty: Black Ops will blow you away once you get the hang of it. It probably won't be a classic, but it's a nice comeback to the CoD series from Treyarch. I probably won't going to get any other Call of Duty due to ActiVision's abuse on fans, but what I'm certain is that Treyarch gave me the closing chapter above my expectations to my CoD gaming history. 9.5 out of 10 Expand

BTW i forgot to mention. GRAPHICS was stlll way better in COD WAW and have you heard the gun sounds of COD BO? sucks as hell. counterstrike gun sounds sounded better that COD BO. and also, compare the sounds of BO to the 3 year old BF BC2. BO graphics was degraded. the sounds were still unrealistic as hell. and when I've never heard of US ARMY, US NAVY or any military association use bomb rigged RC and explosive arrows in operation or in war. WTF IS THIS? HALO? i wont be surprised if next COD will have aliens in it and LASER GUNS and PORTAL GUNS Expand

I don't like anything about this game. Single player is so scripted that it takes all the fun away, waves of enemies till you make one step more its ridiculous. Weapons sound like toys, multi player maps are lame too. And of course they had to release dlc shortly after game was out. Also it seems that activision bribed /bullied most professional reviewers since this game don't deserve more then 3-4 score. I don't think i will ever again buy activision game before checking it myself first. Expand

I was prepared to give Treyarch a second chance (excuse the pun) after "World at War", considering they only had a year to develop that title, but Black Ops only confirms that my faith was misplaced in this terrible studio. You would think that being afforded close to two years of development time, Treyarch would be able to expand on a winning formula and create a worthy follow up to Modern Warfare 2. Don't fix it if it isn't broke, right?
Not Treyarch. Unfortunately, Treyarch do things Treyarch's way for the sake of being different, and Treyarch, and not because it's good.
What do I mean exactly? Let's take the sound for starters. The directional sound is completely muffled to the point where you will not be able to gauge the distance of gunfire. According to the developers, this is called "sound whoring". I call it listening, but Treyarch don't follow any pattern of logic when it comes to games development.
In previous Call of Duty games, you would be able to detect an enemy by his movement - by the sound of his footsteps. Well, not in Ersatz Call of Duty: Black Ops. Footsteps are muted to the point where you will only hear an opponent when he is within knifing distance. What's even more puzzling is that there is a tooltip that sometimes appears on the loading screen that tells you that the sound of an enemy's footsteps will often give away their position. I should add that there is a Ninja perk in the game that reduces the sound of your footsteps, but you won't need it here. It's built in.
Other bizarre sound design decisions include having your character shout out that he is placing a claymore (the enemy team can hear these call outs), completely defeating the purpose of your intention to set a trap.
As for the balance, this is the worst balanced Call of Duty game to date. Many weapons are statistically the same in every way, with the only difference being the weapon model. Even then, that isn't much of a distinction as seven weapons use a negligibly different FAMAS sight from Modern Warfare 2.
If you like to use sniper rifles in other games, you won't find much here. The damage view kick (the flinch when you are hit) is so strong in Black Ops that you will often find yourself damage view kicked to death from across the map at the very distance your weapon is supposed to excel at.
Treyarch also copied many of Infinity Ward's perk ideas from Modern Warfare 2 and gave them a new name, while also bringing back the same redundant perks from Call of Duty 4, like Deep Impact (renamed to Hardened), which have really little function at times when it really matters. I have not begun to address the crippling lag on the game's multiplayer. More often than not you will find yourself staring in disbelief as your well aimed shots pass through enemies, who in turn will kill you in miliseconds with their FAMAS. These problems are exacerbated when you use a sniper rifle. A weapon that fires a lot of bullets quickly has much greater odds of overcoming the poor hit registration than one that demands precision.
There is really so much wrong with Black Ops that I could easily fill two review sections writing about it. If it's any indication, the game had 150,000 players at its peak on its multiplayer on the first day. Fast forward six months later and player numbers have dropped to around 25,000 at its peak per day. Modern Warfare 2 has more people playing. I would recommend that game instead, or just hold on for more news of Modern Warfare 3.
If you're looking for a game that has a variety of things to do, you won't find it here. The new CoD Points system makes everything accessible so you don't have to complete challenges to unlock attachments. Even if the traditional unlock system from previous games was present here, I don't think it would be enough to keep me interested. Black Ops is dull and uninspiring. Treyarch have proven why they are referred to as the Call of Duty B-Team with this pathetic offering.
I give this game a 4 because features like Combat Training and the few good tracks within are its saving grace.

my score of an 8 is a reflection of the entire game. If i had to grade the parts of the game individually, I would have graded the multiplayer as a 8, campaign should be rated as a 5, (because it kinda sucks), but zombies is a 1000000. Black ops zombies is the greatest invention in the history of video games.

The game was broken release with lag, crashes and all sorts of other issues. The PC version was a clear port done very badly. Tried it the other day after reinstalling for the first time since Novemeber, it still crashes. I will never buy a Treyarch or Activision PC Game again. Especially COD as from MW2 it was also obvious the PC version had been crapped on.

The devs did a horribe job with this game. The graphics are horrible so they can run on the consoles and it's an import from the console version. Very pathetic. [Multiplayer]
Black Ops is playable, if your computer's CPU has at least i5. The good thing is the new contents, but that's just about it. Hitbox (or hit detection) is okay and seriously, I HAVE NO TROUBLE AT ALL HITTING THOSE ENEMIES (with a 150+ ping and that's laggy for a pro-gamer). If you're talking about balance, it's so balanced that nothing is seemingly interesting to use.

    Graphic
    :
Terribly below standard. Seems so, flat? It's like the new version of CoD4, nothing new about the graphics.

    Sound:
This is what I dislike the most; the guns sound like water pistols, but that's in my opinion.

    Controls:
I really hate the new maneuver called "sprint-diving". Seriously, it is the most irritating thing on the planet. Useless.

    Contents:
The multiplayer has NO interesting content at all. The recoils are so small for every gun, which makes it look like a no-recoil game. I can easily shoot an ak47 across the map with pinpoint accuracy until the 20th round.

Half year later, the game still runs bad on the PC. Only good thing about the whole game? Single player, which might be the best on the call of duty series. Multi player, is nothing but boring and annoying, nothing new. World at War was something I enjoyed a little, but after MW2 I didn't really expect anything from the call of duty franchise, and I wasn't surprised.

I don't know why so many people complain about Black Ops, i was skeptical at first thinking its just another COD game, but no it was better. Black Ops is a great game because of only 5 things, number 1 is split screen multiplayer. i hated switching with friends every time me and him died and it sucked. but now we have two screens which is awesome. Number 2 is combat training. i am a hardcore teenage gamer, but i still have parents friends with 7-10 year old kids come over, so we play combat training/split screen because it is fun. Number 3 is Call Of The Dead. I right reviews at the pinnacle of the game (not always), but Escalation was amazing with call of the dead i loved it. Number 4 is wager matches because they are fun, period. and 5 is that everything is unlocked in split screen so i can go on picacid and have fun. but other than that this game sucks Expand

I used to think that the game sucked because it ran like crap on my old PC. I have upgraded to a nice new up to date one and Call of Duty Black Ops is still a terrible game. The graphics are nothing special. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 trumps this game by far. (Yes I ran it on 1680x1050 16xAA etc etc...)

The singleplayer is like every other console based shooter. Endless enemies and typica
l non-replayable scripted actions and events. The game is just a long movie where you do what you are told and kill lots and lots of enemies.
Because of the scripted nature of the game enemies are invincible untill they have finished their cinematic entry into the battle. Friendly units will push and block you to get to their scripted locations for the next 'scene' of your game, and my favourite: Save points sometimes place your spawn in front of an enemy with a shotgun, while you have a gun with no ammo! =D.

Personalisation of your guns and character in multiplayer are decent and I do like the global match recorder allowing you to film your games without needing 3rd party screencapture software. Though multiplayer as a whole is still pretty bad.

Overall the game is bad. You can buy any indie shooter for like $10 and get the same thing out of it. No point buying a $90 game... and they had the audacity to release $20 of DLC... Talk about putting the Icing on the turd....

Like the other games in the Call of Duty francise, it has slick controlls and a semi-addicting multiplayer, but there lies a problem. It pretty much IS the same as the other CoD games. The story is only semi-engaging with a predictable twist, the multiplayer is the same as Modern Warfare 2, excluding the addition of currency and gambling, the zombies mode just doesn't have that same sense of survival as in World at War, and it just doesn't have the pizas that Call of Duty 4 had. This game is ok, but the skill factor is almost 0. The guns are like toys, water guns, there is no recoil even if we are walking and shooting whole magazine out at the same time, maybe it's because it's a console game and it would be hard to play with a pad with recoil. Am I the only one who notices the major historical inaccuracies of this game, Vietcong are using AKu-74s and the Russians and US are using Steyrs and FAMASs start production until 1979 & 1978 respectivly. SPAS 12s camoe out in 1979. The m16 started production in 1963 2 years after the bay of pigs. Masterkeys didnt come oround until the 80s and underbarell flamethrowers dont exist. Fortunate Son came out in 1970 but the game is set between 1961 and 1968. The MP5 went into production in 1966 so it couldn't be used in 1963. The only reason why I continued to play it was because it atleast works and the gameplay in alright but whenever I notice a historical inaccuracymy immersion is ruined Expand

On the MP side of things, BO definitely an improvement on the disaster of a game that MW2 was, unfortunately it's still not quite the game MW1 was (and still is). The maps have been expanded a decent bit, there are very cool customization options that help you give a personal touch to virtually every bit of gear right down to the totally unimportant player cards. Graphics are really good but only due to the excellent art design, if you start looking you will find signs of serious graphical fidelity the engine has experienced over the years. Sounds are also a definite improvement over previous cods as well as animation, all together these help to make the campaign quite memorable, no matter how confusing it gets at times. One downside of the multiple characters thing is that you don't leave hating the antagonists enough, otherwise as a whole it is quite varied and fast paced with some welcomed breaks in between stages. Camp-fests are virtually none-existent now and the killstreak rewards aren't particularly overused and OP either, leaving much of the fighting in infantry CQC form. Unfortunately Treyarch has yet to nerf the two most OP guns in the game (roughly a year after release o.O), which has put me off for a bit due to recent overuse by the community. The MP as a whole I prefer outright over MW2, and it's minor issues are overshadowed by this fact. Expand

Ok first off i am not going to rate this game for MP but i will say it worked fine for me. I have no other C.O.D. title to compare to or go by as this is probably the only one i will ever purchase partially due to the fact they hardly ever have sales for it and since they have so many titles i just don't see the point. there are so so many other games out there to play. That being said, i really like Black ops one of the best newer Fps i've played but its on the lower rung. too long of cut scenes in single player and the story was ok with fairly smooth gameplay. it's a decent shooter but i believe if youve seen one C.O.D. youve seen them all. I found the Multiplayer to be quite enjoyable though i have to say they fell way short of BBC2 witch completely rocks C.O.D.s' socks off sorry i just had to say that lol.. this is a good game imo but not worth the price. Also i almost forgot to mention the main reason i chose this C.O.D. title was for the fact it seems it has the most to offer out of all of them. The arcade mini top-down zombie game is awesome and the fact they brought the zombie mp mode back is worth mentioning and fun as well Expand

Call me crazy, but I've been a fan of Treyarch's additions to the Call of Duty series, and this is no exception. An interesting Single Player storyline that is reasonably long (compared to Modern Warfare 2) was refreshing to play, and the graphics are astounding. The Multiplayer was short-lived, for me, as the maps grew old quickly and prestige got annoying. The Zombie mode is what keeps me coming back to this game time and time again, with some excellent novel ideas brought in to mix it up. Great DLCs were brought out too, which I think justifies me spending almost £100 in total on this title. Expand

Being a huge MW2 fan, I wanted to love Black Ops. Sadly, for PC the game is a technical failure. The engine runs very poorly and even though claims to run at 90 FPS, is choppy and stutters. Aside from the fact that it took months for the developer to patch the game to a playability state, the gameplay is just not as polished as MW2. I enjoyed the SP campaign for what it was, although there were several totally obnoxious parts where the game didn't indicate what you should do (stupid barrel section!). Overall, the game just failed technically, so it gets a 5 since it was playable, but not very good. Expand

probably just the BEST FPS MAP EVAR.

After Treyarch fixed the connection issues, Black Ops turned out to be quite a good game.

I'm giving this game a undeserving 10, as I'm back on Black Ops versus the mw3 which I gave a zero score. THIS is the difference in gameplay for me and even after all the months of patches to finally get the game to work properly on MP. This will for me, remain the best shooter game up to date as most of us are only interested in seamless multi palyer gaming. Who really cares about single player? Like I said a lot of us waited months after purchase to even be remotely able to play, but as it stands today, (including the misconception of development staff as to requirements for this game) it is a great multi player game. They might have found a winning formula here and I do hope the dedicated servers stay around for good.
The only unacceptable issue I have with Back Ops is the steam cloud they use which in turn use VAC as their hacker police, and we all know that VAC is BEYOND useless. VAC can't catch the a$$ end of a joke if you pointed it out to them, let alone hackers. This means the Black Ops MP will ALWAYS have hackers on. Since they now mainly use enemy position hacks, and VAC is still looking blindly at wall hacks, it means: chances are your lovely game will regularly be spoiled by players blatantly using these hacks on a daily basis and nothing is done to this.(probably a "we dont care as we already have your money" attitude.
While the prestige really matters among players, it only becomes bragging rights at Prest 15, and the gold guns look really good, compared to other games. What makes it even more impressive is the different attachments in the same classes which if they expand in later releases will definitely win my max rating vote.
On second thought, I'm stripping that 10 rating to 8, simply thanks to the hacking which I mentioned earlier. Thank you USELESS VAC.

I grew up on MoH;AA and MoH:Spearhead. I tried COD mw1 just before COD:BO came out on steam for PC. COD:M1 was just chaos, but had good layout custimization. I now have 951 hours in the COD:BO multiplayer, and typically just stick to CTF hardcore matches. I never really got into the SP side of COD, or in any multiplayer FPS game for that matter.

Seeing 4.3 for this game as a user score is
a joke, to say the least. I play my fair share of video games on PC of all types... and don't really care about who made this game. The game is very enjoyable if you are looking for an online FPS multiplayer that you can really spend some time in. The lag is about 10% of the lag you'll experience on BF3 or MW3 (stay in your country and you will not notice any - ever (on a decent/good PC).

I'd recommend this game to anyone who is looking.

Jokes aside, Despite the bugs and glitches here and there, this is one of the best COD MP you'll ever experience.
As for the SP, it's very entertaining in some moments but it feels like a rail-shooter.
They could have worked a little bit
    more on the storyline.
As for the graphics, even if the engine is many years old, i love it.

It is interesting how one product can change your view on another. When this game was first released, it was riddled with bugs and playability issues. The developer has quite successfully fixed them and it is a good looking solid FPS. It is funny that it took the absolutely abysmal release of MW3 to show me just how good Black Ops truly is. A game that was released in 2009 has better graphics, better playability, better maps, and a better single player PLUS ZOMBIES! It was a toss up between this title, World at War, and COD: 4 as to which was my favorite. I think that World at War is in a class of its own, so between COD: 4 and Black Ops, I have to say that Black Ops is by far the best product that Activision has released under the Call of Duty name. I think I can confidently say that the only thing good about this game in the Zombies mode, although I still found it far less entertaining than the survival mode in MW3. The graphics and sound are mediocre at best--mostly just bad--and the gameplay alternates between frustrating and boring. The single-player campaign was more a chore than anything: I kept hoping that it would get better, but it never did. The story was moderately interesting, but the presentation was dull and confusing. There are plenty of explosions, ambushes, and near-death experiences, but I could never bring myself to care about anything that was happening. The 'characters' are all either shallow or completely lacking in personality, and nothing that happens really seems to matter much--not until the very end, by which time you're probably half asleep. Perhaps the multiplayer is worth trying, but from what I've seen of others playing it, there's nothing special there either. Expand

Ok, its a cod game so that explains the very low reviews its very easy for someone mad in multiplayer to give it a 0. But this game is very far from a zero.It has its problems, like every cod, but it is 10 times better than the modern warfares. The campaign is absolutly amazing,it seems to skip around a bit, but OH MY GOD THE END OF THE GAME WAS EPIC.I wont spoil it, as it is one of the best stories i have ever seen, but i can tell you it is amazing. The game made me so curious, and a few wikipedia pages on cold war rescearch later, my mind was blown. Its like the movie "Inseption", i had to think about it alot and its amazing. Ok, cod players don't have much brain power in general so a epic story that is mind blowing wont appeal to them, witch might explain some of the hate. The other hate comes from bugs and such. Most bugs have been fixed. And cod players are probablly like "wtf this game is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO gay" really its not at all. The multiplayer is much better than any pervious cod but sucking and getting killed all the time makes people write bad reviews. Honestly this game is worth buying, even just for the story witch is amazing. Expand

My god, how horrible this game is. From the completely uninspired multiplayer maps, the costant lag and connection issues that seemingly blinds you with a good online connection, and a washed out, smoothened and generally downgraded graphics engine from the original call of duty engine, You can't get any fun out of this game. In fact, I would recommend this game for PEOPLE WHO WANT TO JUST GET PISSED OFF AT THE WORLD, because that's how you are going to feel when you try to get through this. Not much about the gameplay from multiplayer has improved from modern warfare 2, and more or less has actually made some features about it worse. Quick-Scoping still exists, some guns are way overpowered over others (The G11, for example), and while Noob-Tubes are less frequent from MW2, they are still overpowered and still present. Also, Black Ops 2 probably has THE WORST pyrotechnics I have seen from any game, like, Doom 2 bad! (but I can tolerate it since it was made in a primitive time). I would only say good luck to you to try to make this game feel anymore different or innovative from MW2, which will not succeed. The story, however, does have a lot of intrigue but the COD franchise has to go beating dead the typical Russian Stereotype once again because the RUSSIANS WILL ALWAYS UP TO SOMETHING, RIGHT?! but, anyhow, the singleplayer's story is decent, but the gameplay also suffers the same consequences from the multiplayer, with how tedious it will get to have to kill the same face model coming out of a typical spawn point hand in hand. But, if you can manage through that, the story elements in this game are quite intriguing. Zombies, well, it's not that good. I mean, the gameplay is decent, and the survivors are a riot, but the content of maps on it is lacking, considering how many god damn DLCs treyarch literally had planned up for their satisfaction. As for the DLC's, I would only recommend Rezurrection as it will be the most worthwhile DLC, with all of the classic zombies maps as well as Moon. But, what pisses me off the most by far is how utterly easy AND hard the AI can be in combat training. I don't know what Treyarch had intended when making this mode, but to have it online with no benefit rather than totally NOT engaging you in the real XBOX Live experience frightens me. The AI WILL NEVER MISS, and will always never have any recoil when they fire. Their reaction time to Melee is INSANE! it's like you have to melee 5 seconds before you decide to melee someone just to get a heads up! also, The AI IS CRAZY GOOD At throwing grenades and almost will always get you with grenades from anywhere. now, on the easy side, The AI constantly drift around, and will take their pretty time aiming at you before you fire, also, they don't seem to pursue you like other normal people would, and they use their equipment in the most shallow way possible with no use of tactics or motives at all. With this in mind, you should disregard combat training and the xbox live matches as two totally separate ways to play, but what they share is that they'll both piss you off and make you rage like hell. Zombies really is the only worthwhile part of this game IF you really want to add $15 dollars to your wish list on top of the retail $60 you had to pay for this piece of **** knock-off to modern warfare 2. I honestly could say that in a lot of ways this game wholly seems like it was made from an earlier timeline than modern warfare 2, considering that modern warfare 2 was made BEFORE this one. This game is just a blatant cash-in with no thought or consideration on ingenuity other than the decent storytelling and the new contracts and cod points mode. I'm trying to get all the pros and cons on this game but mostly to me Black Ops has some steps forward in the COD franchise but ultimately makes more steps backward just to get a few more 100 million dollars cashed in for another product coming in next month. I will not play a game that I know once I pick up I automatically want to commit homicide on the **** developers who decided to release such a rehashed title. Expand

This game has quite a lot of technical problems. And if you are able to run it what you will get is a pretty average first person shooter. The campaign is as linear, scripted and braindead as you would expect from the genre. Decide for yourself if that is a bad thing or not. Gameplay wise has the series stood still for a while and black ops continues on that path by not changing a single thing. The shooting is still alright but everything from the bad visuals, forced turret sections, endlessly respawning enemies, linear maps and scripted events starts to feel dated and if you have played a military shooter or two you will definitely have seen this before. That the campaign is rather short for the games price doesn't help either. You do get to visit some interesting places in the campaign which is always nice and the story is better than you would expect from this genre even if its a bit cliche. The multiplayer will compensate for this for some. Personally i didn't get much fun out of the multiplayer. The reason was technical problems and lack of interest. I would give the game a 5 in score since i believe that the game is quite average but the technical problems manages to bring it down a score. If this is your thing and if you are a fan of the games multiplayer i would recommend buying the game for a cheap buck. Just be aware that you might have to deal with some technical problems. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To experience the game at quality graphics you will probably need to build a new computer, with the most current graphics and audio card. My Duo-core 2 Ghz processor and GeForce GTX 465 had just the bare minimum to play the game in Lowest-setting graphics at somewhat choppy 40 fps. Trying to play the game in Normal settings made the game stutter and unplayable. Even at lowest graphic settings I still experienced occasional stuttering in some heavy scenes. I also experienced stuttering audio about every 5 seconds during the movie sequences, but I was using USB headphones so it is forgivable. I can't help but feel that the coding is somehow off for the PC version, given that the quality of the graphics comes at such a huge cost. Yes, the things like motion capture and such are revolutionary, yet I feel the implementation was done with a sledgehammer instead of with a precision instrument. The game is very taxing on absolutely everything, perhaps the coding was inefficient in general?

    *possible spoilers*

The game plot was interesting and I did enjoy the story. Towards the end, however the plot quickly comes to its end leaving you wondering and perhaps wishing for a bit more. Ethically, I had a small problem with how some of the criminal masterminds seemed to get off easy considering their war crimes. Take for instance, one scene where you see an innocent victim experience a gruesome death after being exposed to Nova-6 gas. You see him die a slow painful death- his skin boils off, his eyes pop out of his head, and he's throwing up screaming in agony. Later, there you hear someone acknowledge that they tested the stuff on newborn babies. The criminal mastermind responsible for this heinous act gets off way too easy in comparison, with such a relatively quick and painless death that it's almost an injustice to the plot. I would have liked to seen at least the Lead Scientist behind it all 'accidentally' have his gasmask come off in a room full of Nova-6. Character development I would give a D-, it could have been better. The hero NPC's have a predictable bio that you've probably seen in movies many times over. Pretty much zero character development on them, you don't even know their histories just that they are on the same team. Relavetively little character to character dialogue on a personal level, 100% of the talking is mission oriented. If you see a comrade die, you feel very little for them other than the fact you now have one less gun watching your six. I did find it interesting that much of the dialogue in the foriegn (Non-English speaking) NPC's was conviently in English. Take for example a part of the game where 2 Russian prisoners speak to eachother in English inside of a Russian prison. The plot suffers as a result. Overall, copy and paste characters in this game. The only character I found interesting was the protagonist due to the mystery surrounding his memories.

That Spec Ops feeling that some people are looking for does exist in some parts of the game. It was a refreshing change compared to other war FPS.

The game is graphical eye-candy if you have the system to play it. Just be willing to pay for it. You buy this game for the great graphical violence and the Spec Ops nostolgia, not for all the great things you see in other games.

As you would expect a CoD game to me. Very similar weapons and mechanics only with a few more game breaking bugs and glitches.

If you're a fan of the Run and Shoot instant spawn Death match type of game play the Call of Duty is so well known for, you will probably get more than a few hours of enjoyment. Just realize you're paying an extra $90 for what essentially should be a MW2 DLC pack,

I tried to like the game, I really did, but the flaws and poor story telling really got to me. On the whole, the game's graphics look pretty average as it uses a dated engine which does not bring anything new to the fold. An advantage of using this engine (in past instalments at least) is that it works well across a wide-range of PCs. Sadly this is not the case for me in multi-player where the game stutters and freezes randomly on all but one of my PCs (which by happy coincidence can only run it on low settings). From the 3 minute intervals in which I get to play the multi-player portion of the game without issue, the gameplay is similar to the previous modern warfare outings, with a lot more customisation options and a new system for purchasing upgrades, both of which actually work quite well. In terms of answering the communities criticisms of previous games, we can now browse for servers again (rejoice!) plus character customisation options are available (maybe heading towards a future world of call of duty title). The problem is, as an owner the rest of the series, the game does not add anything particularly new, instead being a re-hash of previous instalments with a few additions. All in all it feels more like an expansion pack than anything else. The single player campaign, whilst actually working, is also not without its flaws. Whilst the action is extremely fast-paced with some great sections of gameplay, the levels seem extremely short and entirely linear. In order to alleviate the boredom of playing through what is essentially Modern Warfare 2 with more explosions and a larger body count, the developers saw fit to break it apart with extremely chaotic, often surreal in-game cut scenes and set pieces; all of which are done in the best possible taste *cough*. All in all, I gave it a 3 because the multi-player experience is extremely frustrating at this time (bringing little to the franchise) and the single player is actually quite tedious and offers no replay value (unless you do not manage to acquire the myriad of simplistic achievements). Ive always been a fan of treyarch releases. I enjoy their games being that tupically they are more balanced. Though this game fixes alot of the game-breaking elements introduced into MW2 (not a tall mountain to climb as many know) it fails to come anywhere near COD4 and WaW. Treyarch made some much needed adjustments and removed alot of the frustrating elements that outright ruined MW2. Sadly they played it TOO safe and in the end made a bland game. I was very happy to see the unholy trinity of martyrdom, juggernaut, and stopping power removed completely. This could have been enough to make the online leaps and bounds more playable than MW2 but, put simply, the included perks are boring, recycled, and unimaginative. It was also refreshing to see Treyarch practice some sanity by removing dual-wielded shotguns (really Infinity Ward? REALLY??) and issuing major nerfs (handicaps) to the grenade launcher and assault rifles. Hit detection is as abysmal as any cod game so cant count them off there. the weapons are incredibly balanced each with a relatively different play-type leading to more diverse games where not everyone is using the same thing (I'm talking to you famas, m16, SCAR, .50cal, dual rangers). It was nice to see more than one semi-auto rifle but they are much too weak to compete in a fully automatic world. Another issue is snipers were pretty much written out when it came to map design and balancing. Sniper rifles are difficult at best and just dont pack enough punch to be useful. Sniper Players may find themselves snagging some assists but thats only if they can post up long enough to pick off ignorant and unaware players before getting gun down from behind by a newly spawned player. That brings me to BO's next downfall. The spawning is abysmal. You can game confidently knowing that you will have enemy players spawning behind you. around you, and sometimes even right next to you. Very frustrating when you journey to a quiet corner of a map to drop a carepackage or other dropped killstreak. There is a complete absence of a "front" so be prepared to scramble, keep moving, and watch your back (even if it placed securely onto the edge of the map).
Moving to the customization. its safe to say Treyarch was intentionally vague and misleading on the amount of customization. im sure i was only one of many that were disappointed to see that you could not, in fact, change many aspects of your character. It was nice, however to see perks actually affect the way the character looks (ghost, flak jacket, lightweight, etc). Though some may be sold on adding a happyface to their reticle or sculpting male genitalia out of the hundreds of playercard symbols provided, one could not help be feel how absolutely superfluous it all was when there were guns, perks, and killstreaks to buy. The campaign was solid. it didnt break any ground but it was no more superior or inferior to the last 3 COD campaigns. Most dont purchase Cod for the campaign so i wont go into it
The crown jewel that has come to be associated with Treyarch releases is the acclaimed Nazi Zombies. Treyarch has outdone itself again with much more complex maps and even 2 separate "storylines" You have the ww2 cast of characters from WaW and a new cast of which i will not disclose. The new cast is hilarious and the voice actors are excellent. Its much more challenging. Zombies fall out of the ceiling, leap through windows instead of climb, and there is even a new very dangerous breed of zombie of which ill let you discover for yourslelf. The mystery box moves much more often (averaging 4-5 uses before whisking off to a less defendable room). Treyarch also included a competitive top-down arcade zombie killer that is amazingly fun and good for hours of replay with up to a team of 4. Overall the game is solid and offers an amazing amount of content in terms of maps, zombies, killstreaks(trust that if this had been an infinity ward release you would be shelling out some extra dosh for alot of it). Though it seeks to fix what mw2 broke it just doesnt offer enough NEW items to make people drop MW2, and WaW to make the $60 switch. See you in two years treyarch, better luck next time.

Starting on a positive the single player of Black Ops was one of the best developed in the series thus far, however the storyline that accompanied it was a rather weak attempt at creating a dramatic drive. Perhaps it is unfair to compare it to the previous games of the series but I felt less pulled by the characters and the story than in the Modern Warfare iterations; placing the voice of Gary Oldman and various others in game is not enough to create compelling characters. The main upside to the single player was the unique action sequences, however they seemed rather tacked on and the remainder followed the usual mission formulas. Many complaints followed the initial release concerning the lag issues in the multiplayer, despite the fact that Treyark quickly made an attempt to solve the issues, it remained a rather inexcusable oversight on behalf of the developer and one that could have been avoided with the now industry standard of holding open beta programs. The available maps seem to lack a certain refinement, the layouts tend to promote a single class type, most often resulting in whole teams running about with SMGs. The maps were always at their best in the original Modern Warfare, which Treyark simply haven't followed up on, even their previous World at War had better designed maps. Again I'm making possibly unjust comparisons but the graphic quality of Black Ops seems to lack the detail present in the Modern Warfare games, textures do not seem to mach each other with various levels of contrast surrounding the screen making the together seem somewhat overwhelming. Perhaps this is simply because more color is present than Modern Warfare's standard grey, or if it is my own warped perception, all I know is that the graphics of Modern Warfare have always looked better in my opinion. Overall, while Black Ops has attempted to innovate certain areas, it remains incredibly similar to the previous incarnations of the series and as such will suffer from being compared to these predecessors, the level of which Black Ops simply does not meet. This game has all the new modern technology applied for the best playing experience. However, this creates a lot of bugs and errors, especially in Multiplayer mode. Many people, including me, are facing game crashes, freezes, errors, and the only way out is to get the task manager in front of your screen. Even people with higher specs than the minimum required specs face these problems.

    I
still prefer the previous editions of Call of Duty because these editions are, in my opinion, made with love and money did not really influence the game. What I really do like is the zombie mode, as seen in Call of Duty World at War, but the Black Ops Zombies still can't beat the original from World at War. Expand

So please activision, tryarch, infinity ward make the next game different, the whole game feels like its missing something. that something is GHANGE

This is what happens when you listen to the stupid community. Now unfortunately there is no class building as most of the weapons are just rubbish. Assault Rifles and only 2 of the SMGs are the only weapons in this game that are actually good. Snipers are useless, Shotguns are useless LMGs are just not superior to the good weapons etc. Lag is a pain in the ass and it is fairly buggy too. Due to the fact that most of the weapons are gimped, the game gets extremely boring. It is basically like playing a crappy version of counter strike. People are going to have to realise that the Call of Duty designers are just criminals out to steal your money. Expand

Call of Duty: Black Ops basically continues the trend for Treyarch thus far: copy the previous game, but be sure to change the time period, modify gun and perk names, write yet another fairly uncreative story for the campaign, and make an addition or two to multiplayer, like emblem customization. I would have given it a much lower rating about one or two months ago, before the numerous bugs were fixed, but now that many glitches that have caused the game to crash or freeze have been straightened out, it is a better game. However, this does not change the fact that it is very similar to its predecessor. Let me organize this in a good/bad list. The good: 1. Cool main menu 2. elimination of stopping power perk (now the perk 2 slot will see some variation compared to before) 3. elimination of tactical nuke 4. return of zombies 5. increased multiplayer character customization (outfit, emblem, and red dot and reflex sight aiming reticule). 6. The adoption of use of CoD points (you can buy attachments now instead of getting 6 million kills for something like extended mags) 7. wager matches for those who like to gamble The Not-So-Good: 1. character outfit in multiplayer is based on perk 1, not how the player wants their avatar to look 2. aiming reticule and emblem require cod points to modify (and have no combat benefits) 3. level up a little too rapidly 4. no way to tell if the gun you are purchasing has the attachments you desire available 5. sleight of hand pro no longer affects sniper rifles (no quick scope!) 6. loss of machine pistols and shotguns in secondary weapon slot 7. no new game modes 8. no improvement in graphics 9. $60 for more MW2, but different 10. fewer perks 11. skimpy selection of shotguns, sniper rifles, and LMGs (3 out of 5 primary weapon categories) 12. fewer killstreaks. So, if you liked MW2, but are annoyed by the stopping power perk a lot and would LOVE to customize your emblem and aiming reticule, and maybe want a little variation in guns and maps, the CoD: BO is worth about $30-$40. Unfortunately, that could be a while, since MW2 hasn't decreased in price yet. It might be something to pick up while it's on sale for, maybe 50% off. This game isn't really an upgrade or downgrade from MW2; it's more of a sidegrade, which is not worth $60. Expand

The game shows great improvement on content side of things from MW series. However technical execution of it is pretty miserable. Even beside performance issues many people having the game is plagued by bugs. Bugs with class editor, ranks resetting, freezes and crashes, poor netcode, broken bullet penetration, broken object clipping, etc. I wasn't able to get anything sensible in terms of support either as Activision and Treyarch point fingers at eachother and do nothing. The bottom line this game is a shameless cash grab milking the CoD series. Expand

This is not the best COD in it's franchise but it definitely isn't the worst. The single player isn't the most thrilling either. It's your basic America number 1 and save the world idea. This game excels in the online game play. There are the same mission types as before but just with different kinds of weapons based in the 1960s to the 1980s (which is cool) You can customize your gamer icon for players to see your art but you can also at art to your guns and customize the reticles. This game isn't crap, but it isn't anything "intense" worthy. The online is what keeps you coming back, it's a fun no brainer shoot em up kinda game. Hopefully they go back to ww2 in the next one. I'm tired of the modern stuff.... Expand

Not a bad game. sure there are a lot of things im not fussed about, like the fact that you don't get time to think in the single player campaign because it is constant action and the random lag spikes in multiplayer for the first month or so was really annoying, but it was fun for a fair while and i got about 50 hours out of the game before i moved on.

Terrible game, no matter what platform you play it on. Multiplayer is identical to MW2's. For some reason, and im not very sure why, i REALY hate the singleplayer. perhaps the lack of originality or how linear it is really breaks it. This game is just a money whore for treyarch and activision.

For a game which we all looked forward to this is was and remains a serious let down. If you are one of the lucky people who can actually play the game without stuttering and general bad performance the single player story is pretty cool but let down but some extremely pathetic enemy & NPC AI - don't be surprised to walk right past an enemy who is standing next to a teammate doing absolutely nothing. The MP is well boring - there is no lobby to chat and you need to leave a server before you can build a class - which incidentally will reset itself more often than not. The AK47u is so over used it is like playing the same player over and over again. There is also no need to ADS as hip fire is so accurate that this is a noobs paradise. Heavy Camp mode (Hardcore) is more software due to no aiming required that this game simply fails. Have played this for about 2 month's and in all honesty me and all most of my steam friends list are all playing MW2 again, yeah MW2 is not perfect and has it's share of issues but it is seriously a better game. I do not recommend this game to anyone - rather buy it if it ever becomes really cheap as it will just waste your money and frustrate you. Expand

Black Ops, what to say? Treyarch made it half-assed. They more or less copied and pasted MW2, made it look a lil older, made the graphics a lil more uglier and wah la Black Ops!!! First off, pretty much every gun and perk from MW2 was moved to Black Ops, where they were "polished" as Treyarch had said, so more or less changing the abilities of a few perks, changing their name. Look at the guns, same guns as in MW2, Treyarch had released a statement that the guns were suppose to "prototypes" to the guns in MW2, basically an excuse to not have to design very many new guns, just copy and paste :) Equipment was very naive......Claymores? In the 60's? I highly doubt they had lasers powerful enough to be small enough to fit in a claymore, come on Treyarch at least try... The CEO of Treyarch had also removed QS'in because he said "Its a cheap, underhanded tactic." Excuse me? You took out something many people loved, but you left in noob toobs and claymores? Right. Black Ops felt alot like a crappy update on MW2, could even be called a Mod. They used the same engine as WaW, Treyarch was insanely lazy with this game. In-fact, they released a statement a few days ago saying "The biggest problem is -negative- players." Well, if you had actually TRIED to make a CoD game, instead you chose to do a few updates and set the timeline back 50 years. You think you can get away with making a half assed game, just cause CoD is the cash cow it is (which they obviously did). That said, lets talk about the PC Conversion. The game was made on a PC, so why would they convert it to a piece of crap console, and then convert it back to PC in the most **** way possible? Treyarch has made many unfavorable choices in the making of this -once again- half-assed game. But there are a few things........that just made me smile uncontrollably, i mean your blood really starts pumping when you shoot a dude 15ft infront of you with a freaking knife-gun known as a Balistic Knife, or you break out a crossbow with plastic explosive on the tip....... Then you have Customization, making your own emblem, around a good 15 or so camos for guns, face paint. Somehow, when you sit down and play Black Ops, and you just.....get into your gaming mode, you forget about Treyarchs failed turn at the CoD franchise, no you only focus on the guy you just shot in the forehead with a balistic knife. In the end, Black Ops is playable, and indeed enjoyable. What would i like to see Treyarch do in the future? Update your Engine, actually do Beta's, and listen to the players, oh and is having a whole new set of guns and perks and attachments too much to ask for? Black Ops isn't worth $60 but, if you can find it on a sale, or get a good deal on it, take it. Expand

Black Ops for the PC is a unique game. Before you purchase this game you should probably pray to whatever deity you believe in, that this game can run on your gaming rig. If you have an i7 with a nVidia 480gtx x 2 in SLI, prepare to feel like you've wasted your money on upgrading your machine.

    Stop...

It's not your computer, its this poorly optimized, xbox 360 port of a game. This game
runs terrible for many people, and if you're one of the lucky few who can truly run this game without FPS drops, than thank God. Besides the sluggish performance, the game continues in the path set by MW2.. that is, over powered weapons, unbalanced game play, and overall same ole, same ole bs that we're all used to. If you loved being torn down in MW2 by a silenced UMP wielding super kid with marathon and stopping power, than you'll love Black Ops' AK74u and Famas. Honestly their is absolutely NO point in using any other weapons besides those... Balance... Does not exist in this game... Person with the best weapon wins, always...

If you love being killed by a marathon running, no scoping, sleight of hand pro kid with a sub machine gun at their waist, than this game is for you. If you love playing on a really small map, because most servers only play "Nuketown", Black Ops smallest map, than this is the game for you.

If you love sluggish game play, 12 year olds, and overpowered sub machine guns, this game is for you.

Other than that, this Call of Duty will surely not be missed, save your money for developers who truly pay attention to the PC community, and who can develop a suitably decent game.

Regressive. CoD: Black Ops shines in the presentation department. It looks and feels like a modern-day animated movie. Sadly enough, this stands in stark contrast with the shallow gameplay.

The core action, shooting things, mostly resemble the classic rail-shooter. The narrow path is completely fixed, alternating with truly small open spaces. Straying more than 20 meters from teammates results in a mission failure and an accompanying message about abandonment. The single decision left to the player is where to point and shoot.

Dumbed down for consoles, the controls are erratic. At moments not allowing certain avatar actions like crouching. In the same vain are the arcade sequences where the player has to rapidly, and sometimes repeatedly, press a certain key.

These gameplay mechanics require a lot of exposition; press key x, watch the grenade indicator indicator etc.. The necessary guidelines keep popping up throughout the game, constantly breaking immersion .

For a pc game this is a large step backwards, to the pre-Half Life era. If you have not done so, look into Far Cy 1 and Crysis for games offering better depth and balance.

Ok I will be as honest as I can be, I have played all of the Call Of Duty came (on the pc) and cod 1 was ground breaking cod 2 proved it was not a fluke and was even better, Modem Warfare 1 the next step forward and an excellent all round game.
Then it wall went a bit pear shaped, Modem Warfare 2 was a bad clone of Modem Warfare 1, it was almost like they were trying too hard to write an
    exerting story.
Anyway then came Call Of Duty Black Opps and oh dear they did it again, far too much time was spent on the story and not enough on the game play.
In single player, you play for five minuets then watch a five minuet cut scene then play for five minuets and watch another five minuet cut scene, and the whole thing goes on and on in the same boring patten.
At about half way through the game you start to skip the cut scene's which have obviously had more work on than the game its self and you totally lose any interest in the rather dull story and just want to finish the game.
multi player is OK at best and that's being kind, the unlock system is straight out of battlefield 2 and the game play is heavily flawed in so many places with bad spawning, some very amateurish maps (I have seen better user made maps in counter strike ). Then there's the bad frame rate and the lag issues, all in all its a lazy effort and not worth your time or money.
My advice is give this one a miss.
