  • Summary: Cold Fear is the first action-horror title under the Ubisoft brand. The game is set in a dynamic environment on a stormy sea, including intense combat, intelligent enemies, and a high element of the shockingly unexpected. Your life jacket won't be sufficient. Players step into the role of Tom Hansen, a U.S. Coast Guard who is sent to board a drifting Russian whaling ship in the middle of a howling storm on the Bering Sea, who will discover there is no safe place here. On this constantly rocking and shifting ship and a mysterious oil rig, players must turn their interactive surroundings to their advantage to take down human enemies ? and enemies that aren't human any more - and save their own life. 1. Puts out where it counts. Cold Fear is a pants-browner. [Aug 2005, p.68]
  2. A leaden feel of backtracking and other nags here and there tie the game down from anything memorable. [May 2005, p.54]
  3. In the same league as the disposable horror flicks that fill video shelves and late-night cable. It's not particularly frightening, but good atmosphere and short-lived twitch satisfaction is enough to sustain interest for a while.
  4. Cold Fear is an unashamedly old school survival horror game, so you should pretty much know whether you're interested in playing it or not.

I really enjoyed this game. the graphics were pretty good and the sound was just okay. needed more focus on story and the game is rather linear and short. The game blends RE4 with traditional horror control. I had a lot of fun with it while it last. i wasn't expecting the game to control so well on PC, but i was surprised to find it controlled very well. those who dont like survival horror games or the old school control scheme may want to stay away, but those who love horror games wil definately enjoy.(got the game used at EB for a mere $6!) Not a terrible PS2 port...they did get the menus right (you can use a mouse, though it's buggered/accelerated/laggy). Control options are as good as possible for a game of this type. Which means it's mostly fubar'd, snafu'd...not good. Had no trouble with dual analog gamepad, but for aiming, as always, the mouse is the only way to go. It's a real pain to use the keyboard in this type of game, where the camera switches angles on you and what was forward is now backward, when you're, say, trying to run away from something. Only slightly easier with a gamepad. I thought this type of thing had been criminalized years ago. Should warrant capital punishment. Playing in OTS view alleviates most problems, but when you press the run key, you exit that perspective. I never could decide which control method to use, both are broken. Music was good, but sounds and dialogue usually sounded compressed. Visuals are good geometrically, but textures are straight outta 1998, typical of all PS2 ports/games. Light & shadows are done well at least. Story was somewhat different, but mostly it was the settings that give this game whatever amount of originality it has. Gameplay is pretty much like every survival horror game you've experienced, excepting those weird Fatal Frame games. There are much better 'horror' games to be had on PC for sure, such as the crusty old Clive Barker's Undying and maybe even Doom III. There's not much to this one, but it's really cheap now and will surely give you your $7 worth. Expand
  4. When I first started Cold Fear I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The sway of the ship, the rain, the lightning. All lended a nice touch. Then I tried playing the game. Forget WASD, the movement controls for this game are F*KD and the aiming is just as bad. Stopped and uninstalled after just 15 minutes of "play". Gave the game to a friend. He played for about as long. Even for free this game is a pass. Expand
