The game is set in a dynamic environment on a stormy sea, including intense combat, intelligent enemies, and a high element of the shockingly unexpected. Your life jacket won't be sufficient. Players step into the role of Tom Hansen, a U.S. Coast Guard who is sent to board a drifting Russian whaling ship in the middle of a howling storm on the Bering Sea, who will discover there is no safe place here. On this constantly rocking and shifting ship and a mysterious oil rig, players must turn their interactive surroundings to their advantage to take down human enemies ? and enemies that aren't human any more - and save their own life. 1. Puts out where it counts. Cold Fear is a pants-browner. [Aug 2005, p.68]
  2. A highly polished title that shows that Ubisoft's action-focused approached to the horrific can be gory fun, too.
  3. The game utilises a series of components and dare we even mutter it under our breath, clichés that can be derived from any number of horror films and survival horror titles, which is no big fault since for the most part (travelling aside) the game is an enjoyable title away from the established franchises that does offer some new ideas and details to the genre.
  4. Cold Fear is an unashamedly old school survival horror game, so you should pretty much know whether you're interested in playing it or not.
  5. I must say it's a pity that a game with such a realistic feel and a believable atmosphere suffers from several annoying problems, such as the lack of an in game mini-map or an inventory system and the inability to save your progress or use the health packs at will.
  6. Has a forbidding atmosphere (beginning on a ship and moving to an oil rig), violent blood-letting and superb environmental effects. However, we've seen the same kind of lame puzzles (sodding keycards anyone?) and storylines a billion times before. [PC Zone]
  7. It’s hard not to like Cold Fear for what it’s trying to do, but it’s also hard not to see the glaring errors that it makes along the way. [Apr 2005, p.119]

All in all i thought it was a great pretty original game which will be enjoyed by many people... and who can beat a price of about $7 depending on where you look! Expand

Good screenplay and graphics: can be scarier.

Not a terrible PS2 port...they did get the menus right (you can use a mouse, though it's buggered/accelerated/laggy). Control options Not a terrible PS2 port...they did get the menus right (you can use a mouse, though it's buggered/accelerated/laggy). Control options are as good as possible for a game of this type. Which means it's mostly fubar'd, snafu'd...not good. Had no trouble with dual analog gamepad, but for aiming, as always, the mouse is the only way to go. It's a real pain to use the keyboard in this type of game, where the camera switches angles on you and what was forward is now backward, when you're, say, trying to run away from something. Only slightly easier with a gamepad. I thought this type of thing had been criminalized years ago. Should warrant capital punishment. Playing in OTS view alleviates most problems, but when you press the run key, you exit that perspective. I never could decide which control method to use, both are broken. Music was good, but sounds and dialogue usually sounded compressed. Visuals are good geometrically, but textures are straight outta 1998, typical of all PS2 ports/games. Light & shadows are done well at least. Story was somewhat different, but mostly it was the settings that give this game whatever amount of originality it has. Gameplay is pretty much like every survival horror game you've experienced, excepting those weird Fatal Frame games. There are much better 'horror' games to be had on PC for sure, such as the crusty old Clive Barker's Undying and maybe even Doom III. There's not much to this one, but it's really cheap now and will surely give you your $7 worth. Expand

If you are going to rip off the next game of the year at least make it good. Dont bother with this and go out and buy Resident Evil 4.
