The missions are interesting and, let’s face it, every once in a while, it’s a cathartic blast to wade into the middle of swarms of bad guys and teach them the folly of opposing truth, justice, and the American way. [Mar 2002, p.91]
  2. The quality graphics, accessible interface, fun single-player and multiplayer action, and effective sound all combine to make this a very appealing release.
  3. By making the game more accessible to general consumers, they also took out some of the much needed depth. What it does, it does fine, but it doesn't do too much.

The game is, for lack of a better term, tired. [Mar 2002, p.89]

It may fall between two stools. It isn't realistic enough to please the sim crowd but action players may find some of the restrictions placed on them -- only four weapons to choose from, the inability to point the nose where they want and the need to rely on concealment -- too confining.
  6. It appeals to a man's primal (well, juvenile, at any rate) need to blow stuff up, that part of the pre-adolescent male psyche that puts fireworks in model airplanes, melts GI Joes, and burns down popsicle stick cabins.

It is one of the last playable Helicopter battle sims, with the exception of Apache AH64 Assault. I have both of these titles and they are both good and fun to play. Comanche 4 doesn't have a long learning curve like the old Janes flight games and everyone I have gifted it to have only praise for it. It isn't a New Title so the graphics aren't perfect, but if you want a fun game that gets challenging as it progress's then Buy It you won't be disappointed. It also has a fun multiplayer! But it certainly falls short of being as militarily realistic as Comanche 3 which requires a lot of critical thinking and planning because it is just more difficult. Regardless of its faults, this is a thoroughly enjoyable game with plenty of fun to be had with interesting (though slightly unrealistic) missions and much faster-paced engagements. I still remember all the hype and interviews about the beautiful graphics about this game and an ATI spokesperson saying that the water effects in this game was the most visually advanced in world at the time. Ofcourse it was! Full Review »
