I've asked my friends who have played it on the console and they all said they loved it, so I'm guessing it's either just me, or this is another horrible PC port. Absolutely horrid controls. I had the same issue as Bryan in that the mouse had some really weird movement issues (like faster x than y movement). I immediately noted that I did not like TPS games, and I tried to make the best of it, but within 15 minutes of installing the game I was swearing a lot more than I usually do. Controls and camera are awkward as hell. If you can manage to walk somewhere without your blood pressure rising from frustration (not fear, because this is well before the first monster) then you are a more patient man than I. Good graphics, but then again you do have a giant space suit taking up 1/3-1/2 of your screen. Wait for this (typical) EA garbage to go to the bargain bin.… Expand

Well..."Dead Space" is a game that is just scary as hell; you can't expect what's coming next. Since the PC version has better resolution, it adds up to the scare-hype, which I didn't typically enjoy. But what was worse was the horrible controls and linear gameplay. During the whole time, my eyes were mainly focused on the keyboard rather than the game itself. The gameplay is also very linear; it is scarier than knott's scary farm but that can't cover up how sparse the options you have during the game. You want some thrills? This game is INTENSE, and scary - damn scary. It's hard to scare me, but this game had me jump a few times - It rocks! Definitely worth buying and playing over and over again.

Yes the graphics are good but oh the controls just seem weird. I can't play Halo:Reach on an XBOX as the way the controls work are just too weird for me, these seem much the same, it reminds me of Tomb Raider:The Angel of Darkness and Resident Evil 4 were the control system gets in the way of a good game.
I have turned down mouse sensitivity from the default and it is a little more manageable but the whole interface is odd and awkward. You have to go up very close to stuff before you can select it rather than get in the general vicinity and be looking at it, the screen that springs up to tell you what to do is irritating and gets in the way, this is classic example of a TPS designed for consoles that really doesn't port well to a PC. If there just the option to go in to first person view rather than have a character that block 1/3 of the screen it would be 100% better.

Overall there is a good game trying to get out of here but there is too much detritus in the way.… Expand

Glad to see EA have jumped on the System Shock bandwagon - though, in truth, I prefer this. It is certainly more like System Shock 2 than BioShock (which is very silly indeed) although both their stories don't hold a candle to SS2. Don't listen to the moaners about the conversion - there is really no problem (traditional WASD & Mouse control), and you get used to the movement reasonably quickly. The third person is also neatly tied-in with the interface systems, as well. I hope other developers keep banging on, until one of them finally just sits down and makes a SS3 (or an equivalent with a good story).… Expand

Once I had the controls down, I actually had a lot of fun with this game. The fighting system is a lot like Resident Evil where your #1 goal is to not be touched at all. The game is also a bit like Bioshock where you buy ammo and med kits, and instead of plasmids you can customize your guns and stuff. It's not a scary game, but it's done in such a way that you'll find yourself looking around the room before you enter and sprinting to the corner so nothing is behind you.… Expand

Although every chapter of this game makes me exhausted, I think it is one of the best games I've ever played. The selling point of this game is neither horror nor disgusting, but the combination of these two plus a very challenging style of gameplay makes dead space really a game that can really catch every nerves of the player. Sometimes, many necromorphs (your enemies in the game) suddenly come in your face when you just about to relax, and the producers really know how to make the players 'suffer'...and there are many technical object for you to complete, and some of them require you to work under zero gravity, where you even have to walk on the roof, and necromorphs may appears right in front of you, which really challenge your sense of dimension. Even in easy mode, the game is hard to play, thus makes me even more nervous when facing the necromorphs. The overall mood of the game is not too depressed, but there are so many things can scare you, and keep you nervous for every single second. The bonus is that you could even be more satisfied with your real life after playing this game, the reason is obvious. However, I don't recommend teens play this game, because it is too bloody and scary.… Expand

This game rocks. I think it is way better than doom. Reminds me of system shock 2 a lot. but all organic creatures. The graphics are excellent although they could be better. A little repetitiveness in the level design. But most important it will scare the crap out of you. I like most people :-) arnt easily scared, and this game made me jump quite a few times. Scnd one... Don't look out for games in 3rd person if u don't like it! It had a lot of revieuws and gameplay trailers before it was released and now u go breaking it up because of it's 3rd person... To be honest! I find it a lot more scary in 3rd then the FPS mode in doom!

Outstanding and terrific game. Great graphics, great storyline. Controls and visibility can sometimes be improved but ithis s a really minor point in such a great and innovative game.

An all around excellent horror/survival game, it uses Every trick in the book of horror movies and survival games.

The camera view takes a little time to get used to but it serves the claustrophobic feeling the game has very well, it adds not detracts from the atmosphere.

It also has a nice monster variety that requires you to use all your skills ( stasis and kinetics ) and a variety of weapons not just stick to one weapon.

Add to that cool segments that break the typical gameplay ( zero-G, Vacuum, Asteroids shooting and even more mini-games ), ad the tightly engineered sound design ( probably one of the very few games that uses sound effect perfectly ) and you have a very fulfilling, immersive and engaging experience.

And while the tasks also have variety some of them get slightly repetitive ( Issac fix that, Issac fetch this, ... ) i felt at some point that i'm an errand boy, but still i enjoyed it very much cause every task requires you to face different difficulties and obstacles to do it.

So the game is really awesome and enjoyable but there is still room for more improvements and additions, more varied locations ( like the colony ) more mission variety and mini-games, more complex puzzles, et etc ... i hope DS2 will build on DS an improve all the good things in it ... if it did it will be a fantastic game just like DS is.… Expand

Just finished the game on PC. I've been a gamer since the 70's and I've never ever played a game that was so "piss your pants" scary. If you have a heart condition, think twice before buying it. Good God... The ones that make me jump are the ones that creep up on you, and suddenly they are right in your face(or arse). The controls feel very "porty" however, they work, and do their job. I think its more of Isaac's clumsy untrained motions rather than control lag. It does get a knock for that, even though I have corrected the issue by modifying some vid issues. So slight knock against the game for that. Otherwise, the quality of the production, story, and downright creepiness factor are a top act. Well done.… Expand

This game is amazing. it delivers the scares promised and eye candy is great! i can't believe what i'm seeing. all of you guys that gave it a bad rating was due to either lag or control scheme. first of all mine has no lag. try getting a good pc before playing a next gen game. and the control scheme?? you guys are complaining because you suck at the game!! any pc gamer knows that most games have different variations of controls. this game does fine in control. you just need to get used to it is all. if you couldn't adapt to new control schemes you would be a single minded pc player. you could only play one type of game. this game is great and i give big props. love it.… Expand

My favourite "next gen" game for pc, better than crysis warhead, far cry 2, Left 4 dead, you name it, awesome hard core sci fi story, scary as hell, satisfying weapons and the upgrade system makes it even more personal to play and you can keep the upgrades for a second and third playthrough. The controls are impressively functional - once you get the hang of them. Although, the storyline is by-the-numbers, it is a gripping and often surprising story. Oh yeah... it's scary as hell.

A cleverly made game, although not as scary as I hoped but I jumped a few times. I see a lot of complaining about the PC port here but I found the game perfectly playable, just some getting used to at first (but it would be better with a wider view). The story is good and contains a few nice twists, the graphics and environment designs are quite nice (I liked the fact that there's no hud), and no need of a super computer. I liked the "no gravity" gameplay, but it can get really confusing as to finding the ground again and since you don't have a wide view (which is okay in small corridors) it is difficult to spot enemies. I found the objective track clever and very useful as it allows you to know exactly where to go. Being able to upgrade your equipment as you wish and to dispose your inventory as you see fit is quite nice. There's about 12 chapters in the game that takes around 1h to complete each.
So all in all, it's not the best game of all time nor is it a very innovative one but it is well achieved and worth playing.… Expand

I simply love this game, it has went into my GOTY list time and time again, I recommend it to everyone and everyone asks me about it.
The controls are **** yes, but they are easy to get used to. I loved this game. The action was great, the satisfying feel of tearing apart an alien with your power boots with that scream is just unforgettable.
As far as with the storyline, it's nothing breathtaking or amazing, but it definitely keeps you at the front (and, at the same amount, edge) of the seat until the last second of what happens.
The controls will take some time to get used to, and by the middle of the game you'll be shooting aliens like it's cutting butter with a knife, and by the end, you'll be ready for Dead Space 2.… Expand

One big fail in game is its ending and final boss (game is not needed bosses at all IMHO, but last one is complete dumb).

The best survival horror game since the glorious times of the first three RE, this new brand has great future, DS 2 was awesome and improved what in the first game wasn't that awesome. This game is THE scary game of new generation.

When i first started playing this. I started off getting frustrated by the controls. It almost feels totally unplayable when you first start playing. It took me about an hour or 2 to finally get used to the controls. once you get past the controls, this starts to become an awesome game. Using the xbox controller was horrible in my opinion, the controls were too sensitive, and they want you to aim at their legs. Once you get the mouse and keyboard controls set up to your liking, and you get used to the way the game works. Then the game is pretty fun.… Expand

Dead Space is an incredible game and a real surprise hit.You can clearly see the painstaking detail that went into creating it's menus, environment and character animations.This is probably the game with the highest production values that I've come across in recent times and just plays great. Gaming dynamics like dismemberment, holographic displays that keep you in the game even when accessing inventory and selective upgrading of your weapons always keeps the player interested. Plus I a have never seen such ridiculous amounts of gore like this, limbs fly all over the place and blood flows like water. On the difficulty side I'd say you'll have to play the game on Hard otherwise it might be slightly too easy. Talking about the length of the game well, I finished it in about 15 hours and I was taking my time. Replayability factor is definitely there though, because after you finish the game, you unlock some goodies for a second play through and also unlock impossible difficulty. Controls were a non issue for me, if you've played something like Mass Effect then you'll have a good idea of how it handles. In closing, Dead Space is a must play for any fans of gaming, particulary those that like a Sci-Fi horror setting .… Expand

Overall this is a very good game. I'm going to spoil the very beginning of the game in this comment, but this part of the game reflects the entire game well. The beginning of the game is calm with a vague ominous feeling. This feeling is eased by the conversation between the crew members of the ship you're on. Various things are wrong with the ship your crew has come to repair, such as the absence of a ship captain or flight crew, but your groups leader is confident that everything is fine, and his voice acting and dialogue effectively reassure the player. Your crew begins to investigate the ship. It is empty. Your character, some kind of ship engineer, recieves his orders to get to work on repairs, your crew is there to repair, not investigate. You follow commands and are temporarily seperated from your group by a large glass window. Suddenly, the lights cut out and the doors around your crew lock. Horrifying, mutated monsters break through the vents below your crew. The lights are flickering on and off so you can only catch glimpses of the assailants, but those glimpses are enough to let you know that your crew doesn't stand a chance. They scream for you to run, and that is all you can do. The monsters hear you open the door as you try to escape. One of them breaks through a vent in the ceiling and starts to chase you. You run as fast as you can through the ship, making a break for the nearest elevator. As you run you can hear the creatures claws hit the ground directly behind you. It is clearly starting to gain on you. You finally make it to the elevator and turn around to slam the A button to close the door. You get your first full look at the creature. It looks like a human, only all of its limbs have been extended and the bones in its arms have formed into massive, razor sharp blades. It has no skin anymore and the muscles, bones, and blood are clearly visible. Its face is monstrous. The creature slashes at you and knocks you back into the elevator as the doors close. The creature pounds on the doors. This is where I breathed a huge sigh of relief. About five seconds pass. A bloody blade stabs through the slit between the elevator doors. Another blade follows. The doors are pried open to reveal the same creature that was chasing you. The doors lock into the open position. You know you're going to die. The creature knows it too. He pulls back his arms and juts out his head into the elevator, letting out a hideous scream. Suddenly the doors slam shut and smash the creatures neck. Its head falls into the elevator to lay next to your feet. The elevator reaches its destination. You don't know if your crew is alive, and you don't believe you will be alive for long. You set out to find a way to defend yourself, knowing full well that if one of those creatures finds you you are as good as dead.… Expand

Dead Space won't set the world alight for being the most original game out there, but what it sets out to achieve it does so well. The atmosphere is excellent, the combat tense and nerve-wracking on Hard difficulty. It's a wonderfully realised environment.

If there is a sequel, I'd enjoy a slightly more open structure closer to that of System Shock 2 - and more ways to follow the lives and experiences of those on the ship (multiple logs and such - and interactions between characters in those logs).

Actually; stop there. EA own the license to System Shock, don't they? Awesome - let EA Redwood Shores make it. If they keep up with the design and really work on the story, they'll be unstoppable.… Expand

Maybe Metacritic should include gamers into their vote tally! As unbelievable as I have read over the years I'm still not sure why Steam allows for their gamerscore to be allowed in what buyers see and see only before purchase unless one is to actually have a paid membership into a well versed gaming review site that is paid directly by gamers for gamers. Metacritic allows a pick of the hat magazines and websites to vote or tally their score into the final tally. Gamers of PC's are the beginning and the end of gaming! Trust me all you console flunkies whom have paid a mere $200 tops at a pawnshop to purchase your "gaming ride" as get to use those big big words of "port" and then you have the breath left or $20 bucks in your paycheck left to put together a hunk of AMD crap and expect us PC Gamers to allow you to stomp on our world in which gaming was created and trust me will take it back after mom and dad stop buying these type of games for you as the depression goes on in our global economy. This game is simply amazing, it has the same feeling and effect of bioshock only done better. The creatures are simply amazing and mad props to the guys in the sound department. THis game is how Doom 3 should have been done. And has set the bar for all survival, horor, and disaster games in the future :D i find that its amazing

What a fantastic game. Like an ode to Doom 3 in many ways, its totally engaging and absorbing. The gameplay is terrifically well balanced too, not too much, not to little of anything. Also, for basically a console port, the PC version is super clean, including a good compromise on the save system.... it just works well. The only complain I had was that the third person view makes visibility pretty tough sometimes, but you get used to it. There are times when I couldn't see what was going on, which made my eyes hurt. Man how can you say this game sucks. Yes maybe the camera angles are not that good but it rocks. This game has to be the best 3rd person shooter I have ever played. Scary as shit kept my on the edge of my chair the whole time. Love the monsters all of them esp the big ass one that has the ripped coat thats scary. The story seems as though it came out of a horror video game making machine. The weapons are too overpowered. But the developers added something I haven't seen before that I thought was pretty cool: the no gravity areas where you could jump from any surface. The game itself is only scary if you expect it to play out like a Barbie game, and though it did give me the jibbers when an alien that I thought was dead took a decent chunk out of myu neck, I stopped being surprised by it after the 3rd one. But all of these criticisms I have for it I found easy to overlook because it played so well. I bought this for PS3 but also played it on PC at a friend's house, They are exactly the same, but it does play6 easier on the console. This is seriously one of the greatest games ever made. And I think it has elements that will appeal to most every type of gamer. First, it's a FPS, and it does that well. The weapons are amazingly creative, and while some may be turned off by the lack of traditional weapons like grenades and rocket launchers; don't be! You'll have much more fun using a spinning saw blade on a tether that rips through enemies. The game also has elements of an RPG, where you purchase upgrades and decide how to level up your character's suit or weapons. The game is also not really linear as there are oftentimes multiple ways to go and multiple missions to address. For people that like linearity, or if you simply get lost, there's a breadcrumbs option that highlights the route you should take. And I haven't had any issues with the controls--at any level. I find them to be intuitive and extremely responsive; I really have no idea what people are complaining about. This is really the perfect game. It's immersive, beautiful, addictive, very creepy, and it has elements that all types of gamers will love. The only downside is the activation DRM. But that's the idiot executives at EA's fault--not the developers or creative crew.… Expand

A great and totaly immersive game, best played in the dark with headphones. A slightly clunky control mechanism hightens the drama of the combat and works well with the overall experiance. It's let down by the forumlaic plot, but its so seemlessley sewn into the play that it's not to much of a loss. Had they got me to feel something for the npc's, made some of the enviroments more convincingly lived in, or given it an intro with the same emotional impact as prey this could have easily been a 10.… Expand

Strangely, there has been talk of sluggish controls with this game. While it is true that he mouse movement sucks when using menus, this isn't a problem because when you are actually playing the game, there is "no lag..." For the people who keep complaining about the mouse, I think they are expecting an "unreal tournament" kind of response, and that wouldn't work with this game! The designers of this game should be given a lot of credit actually, because the way you move adds to the suspense of the game. Just ignore the mouse when you are using menus. This game is gorgeous, and MUCH BETTER than anything I've see come out this year in the sci-fi arena. Forget complaining about DRM, this is a great game. I finish the game and now I'm playing it for second time and its really amazing, for me the best game of 2008. It has the elements to make a great horror history and for keep you playing to unlock new things. The graphics are great, you really feel that you are in the space; the sounds are very good too, always very atmospheric to create the tension over you in every place of the ship. The creatures are creepy and some of them are fast and they coming for everywere, so you have to be ready all the time. Overall for any fan of horror games should have to play this game.… Expand

I gotta say, the atmosphere in this game is off the charts. The dialog is a little wooden, but It doesn't really get in the way. The game is VERY hard to control though, it feels less like I'm controlling a guy and more like I'm driving a tank. The mushy controls however are half the reason the game is so intense since it's so hard to keep a good sense of situational awareness.

This game contains a critical failure bug if you use a USB mouse interface with your keyboard, which most people do. The POV camera will spin wildly, and out of control, making gameplay absolutely impossible. The issue was identified in 2009, and HAS STILL NOT BEEN PATCHED. Once you figure out the controls and fix any mouse issue (if any)...this game is well worth it. It sucks you in and the ride is very fun if you like unnerving games with a decent story. Got issues with the movement? Learn how to get comfortable with it or you can join some of the others here who apparently can't get past it and ruin for themselves a very good ride of a game. Let me put it this way: for a couple of days i could not play this game for more than an hour - so tense and scared it kept my sheety pants! :) Excellent graphics, excellent atmospheric sound, cool upgradable weapons and armour, horrific monsters, and a Classic Sci-Fi / Mysticism story makes this a Must-Have Game!

Dead Space has saved gaming for me. Lately I've been buying games and not being able to complete them. Getting bored after 10 minutes and I've been thinking of quitting gaming altogether. Dead Space has shown me its that not that gaming is getting boring. Its just that in the few years we've be become inundated by a swatch of truly overpriced bad AAA games. Dead Space is classic and 10/10 for me.

Pure adreneline pulse pounding jump out of your skin action. Once you get used to the controls game on. This is a must for any gamer. If you love horror even if you hate TPS take it for a ride or you are missing out on a great and satisfying experience. Greed game... had some bad moments but overall I loved it. It's more of an action game than a horror game, but the atmosphere still good and it does scare you in a frantic sort of way. First of all... This game is all about atmosphere. If you did not like the game because of it's "horrible controls" or some other **** I will just say this one thing: You are doing it wrong. To enjoy "Dead Space" put the difficulty on the highest you can possibly manage (I played on hardest, best feel), get a good headset/speaker set and sit back, relax and get scared. I will admit, the game did drag a little on the end and sure the controls did take a little getting used to, but after all of this, if you look deep into it's core (like the Resident Evil 4 port to the pc) it's an amazing game. The scares are often great, the atmosphere is dark, grim and the entire feel of the game is just described in two words: "Insanity" and "Loneliness". Just to be clear too, Dead Space 2 is not the same type of game. Dead Space 2 is a 7/10 for me. What they did with Dead Space 2 is that they took everything Dead Space did very, very well... And dulled it down. The feeling of being alone with nobody else around, it's gone in Dead Space 2. The very creepy and dark atmosphere, it's still there, just not that much, instead of being in an "abandoned" space ship you are in Dead Space 2 in one where the outbreak has just started. So my advice is; Pick up Dead Space 1 for all the scary and awesome bits and then get Dead Space 2 for the action.

In most 3rd-person games like this the camera angle is a pretty typical chase-cam or maybe in the case of games like Silent Hill something that changes or moves around during certain moments. This game has made excellent use of the Unreal 3 Engine. It looks amazing but doesn't place any strain on my hardware (8800GT). In fact, it even let me record a full-resolution 1280x720 video in fraps without taking a noticeable fps hit. The atmosphere is what really does it for this game. I think it even gives games like Silent Hill 2, Doom 3 or STALKER a run for their money atmosphere-wise. The lighting is spot-on, the slightly warm blurry tinge to the edges of things works well. Graphically, this game isn't just great because it uses a modern engine and modern graphics. It isn't just that it's a high resolution or there's lots of anti-aliasing and cheap tricks going on. The developers clearly understand how to use lighting to set the mood. The sound is amazing...the music is spot-on and there were some genuinely frightening moments in the game. It's overall a very disturbing game that really brings to mind movies like Event Horizon. They've got the horror in space thing down pat here. As for the plot, I don't really care too much. Yeah, some of the other characters are a little mundane, but it's really really great single-player fun.… Expand

The controls are pretty bad, luckily, if you are an experienced PC Gamer, you will find the enemies rather slow so in the end you will be more of a horror to them then they are to you. Speaking of which, it's supposed to be a really scary game, but I can't say it is. Not one time I was scared. Well, only one time I thought "What the hell?" when I entered a vacuum in space and an enemy suddenly hit me from behind a wall, but it didn't scare me. Other than that, often a sudden change in music or a roar from the enemy indicates that you are about to be ambushed. Not to mention that the area you are in will be in lockdown untill all enemies are complete, making it rather easy to know if there are still enemies left or not. The bosses look great, pretty epic. The last time I saw such fun bosses was in Crysis. Overall, the game is pretty enjoyable, and a good gameplay system. However, it only partly lives up to it's promises as it's factor for being scary is rather low.… Expand

The users who rated this game down because of slow mouse control obviously don't know how to use google. Hardware V-sync, rather than software v-sync, fixes the problem, and it's not that big a pain to do in the first place. Of course, if you're an impatient layperson then it's quite difficult indeed, so I don't blame them. Regardless, if you're an intelligent PC gamer and can change an option in video settings, you should be satisfied with the scariest FPS on the PC since Half-Life 1. The only complaint to be had is infinitesimally small plot holes that, if overlooked, still leave the player satisfied after round 1. Round 2, here I come!… Expand

I'm a PC gamer, but I had a 360 lying around so I bought this for console instead. First off this is a console game...not PC. So crappy controls are going to be a definite on a console import. However, this is how all games should be crafted. This game has been in development for years and EA spent over a million dollars on developing this game. First off the story is great. The game is actually scary, and it succeeds at making you piss yourself. Voice acting s good, hell everything except bad PC controls are good. My only complaint is that EA should of developed good PC controls, but otherwise buy it it's worth the money. 9 out of 10.… Expand

Underwhelming. It started out with a lot of potential and slowly leveled out in mediocrity. The way the controls operate is different but highly functional. The angle at which the camera is set above the right shoulder makes it extremely difficult to accurately orient yourself behind objects and usually had me moving about a foot too far to the left. Now usually this isn't a problem, but when that one foot is say...in front of a meteor shower that kills you instantly or in front of the exhaust from a spaceships main thrusters; it gets to be annoying reloading the game two or three times because the insight that maybe you need perspective to gauge distance effectively to not die didn't occur to the developers. The visuals are very good in this game, it offers some very unique and tense environments you'd be hard pressed to see recreated elsewhere; the Zero-G segments are very cool and very accurate as is the vacuum segments. The sound is stellar in this game, I bring this up next because the vacuum segments are almost completely soundless, you can only hear your own breathing and some of the vibrations from your weapons on the outside of the suit. the rest of the sound production is extremely well done; from the horror orchestration to the scratching of claws behind double thick bulkheads it'll test your surround sound very well. Unfortunately, the worst part of the game is probably the storyline; it consists of a reason to bring you to the "big scary space ship" and the rest is composed of what awful place you have to go to find a computer component to open the next door. Any character development is split between the two bookends on either side of the actual game. I actually forgot why the main character was in this situation by the time I got to the end because it's never mentioned again until practically before the credits roll...and I beat the game in slightly less than eight hours on medium. The one furiously aggravating part about this game is that you are continuously separated from catching the "bad guy" by various windows throughout the game, CONSTANTLY. You will exit a room you just fixed only to the have the door lock and the "bad guy" appear on the inside of the room destroying everything you just did and belittling you while he does it and you just have to play along, criminally annoying.… Expand

this game is is pretty darn scary, fun and very interesting. the graphics really aren't all that great and there are tons of low res textures but overall the game has a nice atmosphere. the mouse and keyboard are perfect as long as the in game vsync is off. you need to play this on a widescreen because the over the shoulder perspective can make you a little queasy on a regular 4:3 or 5:4 monitor. also any card above an 8500gt could easily handle this game so its great for those that don't have high end gaming comps.… Expand

to keep a long story short: this is a pretty scarey game, but not so bad that its unplayable for me. Dead Space was basicly the first game ive tried in this genre and i quite enjoyed it. Enough moments were i jumped in fright (ea. when your getting jumped by those big tentacle thingies, or a slasher falls on top of you.) the graphics are ACE. Need quite a machine to run it but im glad my machine can handle it with some effort. The whole zero G and vaccuum stuff is well worked out as are the animations (esp on the soldier) disturbing enemies, inovative weapons and easy controls. too bad the movement seems a bit sluggy, altho that might has something to do with my PC. Great horror game, Everything in the game scares you from the sounds. I recommend playing it with really nice headphones or an audio system because laptop speakers or cheap dell desk speakers don't do this horror game justice. The scream mechanic when you see enemies is flawless. The guns and store are great. The character could say stuff but overall is really cool. Story is average, but game play is good albeit the sluggish mouse, It adds a bit of realism. Overall great design!… Expand

This must be the best horror / survival FPS (as far as it's a shooter) I've ever played. For some reason the game came up with a lot of different things to do to get me on the edge of my chair, unlike the novelty scary games where you push buttons, lights go off and the same monster spawns behind you, over and over again... Also, they didn't make it pitch black 95% of the game, which is a very big plus. The HUD and other interactive items were brilliant, the graphics were pretty good, the sound effects and tense music was awesome and the variety in objectives, scenery, thrilling moments, weaponry and tactics were overall terrific. Replay value is maybe once to none, considering you know what's going to happen (roughly). Only big minus I'd give, but doesn't have to do a lot with the game, is the DRM. Even though I've just played it for about three hours, I already like it. MUCH. I had to get used to the third person camera, but that didn't take too long (20 minutes). The graphics, environment, enemies (+their deaths) and sounds are brilliant. Even though I have played Doom 3 twice, it doesn't feel the same at all to me! Only thing I'll just have to see later on is the chance of getting bored because of the repetitive action... But who get's bored of shooting limbs off..? I, personally, find this top be and extremely entertaining game. Don't complain about the controls, you can EDIT those. Seriously, anyway, my ONLY complaint about this game is slight repetitivity after the first playthrough. The Necromorphs are very detailed and very gruesome, (pretty awesome there), the story could do with some more depth but its still pretty cool. The characters are great, seeing as there's only 5 other that the Necromorphs. 9/10.… Expand

Long has Capcom been the herald of horror. And to the benefit of all horror genre fans out there...Capcom no longer has the luxury of resting on their laurels. EA has managed to create a game that not only is a great game on it's own...but has at last put blood back into the life of a genre that IMHO has been abysmal for the past couple of years. Dead Space is not a masterpiece, but it is masterfully done. I should add that though I don't much like EA as a publisher or developer, I am an avid fan of Dead Space. What a frightening game! The story alone is worth making a movie about. Oh wait; they did! It's more of like a short film actually, it's about an hour and 15 minutes long but its gives you an idea about the events that lead up to you and your poor crew. They don't even see it coming. I was hooked from the moment i poped in the disc. The idea of no HUD is nice too. The replay value is second to none. Every subsequent time you start a new game you get to keep your upgraded weapons and armor!! A must have.… Expand

I loved this game. It is atmospheric, aesthetically stunning, and the combat is fantastic. The sound engine is beautiful, and the music raises the tension dramatically. The one problem with the PC version is the awful AWFUL mouse controls. If you are using a mouse and keyboard, feel free to deduct a 2 or 3 from the score I am giving. I have a wired 360 controller to play with and it is an absolute dream. The game is a stunning achievement regarding the horror franchise and I am happy to recommend it to anyone, with prior warning of the controls.… Expand

A great game, very intense all the way to the end. It is a scary game but you get used to all that scariness when you get used to the game. The missions are alot of fun and very inventive. The graphics are very awesome and really get you into the game more. The sounds in the game make it really creepy to walk down a hall. The gameplay takes getting used to because you have to deal with looking behind the character the whole time. The story is very good and is not hard to follow. Its one of those games you have to play twice to fully understand everything. It is a great game and a perfect length for this type of game. I loved playing it! Dead Space is a classic, reminding me of an Aliens movie style setting and making it very cool & unique. I really loved this game and almost freaked when they indicated that Dead Space 2 may not come to the PC, thank goodness they changed their minds! My only gripe (likely from many others) is the mouse controls were so screwy (did the vsync thing to fix gameplay but then menu interactions sucked). It was EXTREMELY disappointing that EA never issued a patch or seemed to care about the PC version. I honestly hope they show the PC more love in the sequel (I won't be holding my breath).… Expand

This game was great, to bad it had to end, but a nice twist at the end. If you have played games like resident evil, this game will seem familiar but different. There are times where you will constantly be looking behind you hoping an enemy is not sneaking up behind you and then you let your guard down and bam. Unlike most shooters were you aim and shoot for the head and the enemy is done, that's the last thing you want to aim for because the enemy will transform into something more deadlier. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the game, the constant tension will draw you into the game, the combat is great but can get a lil old toward the end, and the enemy's are great, The character you play may not ever speak a word but he does not need to. I think it's great how they incorporate the health bar on the spine of your character and the ammo count is project on the side of the gun, its nice that hud is simple and does not distract you from whats going on,If your a fan of sci fi movies such as the thing, and alien this is the game for you. There are some draw backs though, eventually you start to figure out where some enemies will spawn, wish there was more enemy types. I wish there were more weapons but the few that are there do an admirable job. There is not much other things to complain about this game, i think, is great.… Expand

A triumph of style and gimmicks over substance. There is not much going on here except for shooting monsters repeatedly. An overly generous person would call both the setting and the storyline minimal, that same person would call it predictable and sometimes a little bit scary. Having said that, some of the weapons are good, some of the gimmicks keep you interested and you do actually want to escape the damn place. So I managed to finish it and just about got my money's worth. I cannot envisage a scenario whereby I'd ever play it again and would only recommend it to horror maniacs who have no more than £10 to spare and nothing better to do.… Expand

I consider this game to be unplayable. You basically can't see anything because of the ridiculous FOV setting and the fact that the camera is so uselessly placed that the character obstructs half the screen. Also the view controls are sluggish and unintuitive. Maybe this game is better on a console and it's just a bad port. In any case on the PC it's horrible. Avoid it.

Overall I really enjoyed this game, I tried a few things to get into it and couldn't get past the **** mouse controls and the fact that it felt like a console port (which it is). The fact that I only paid a few quid for it on Steam meant it didn't bother me as much, but they should have picked up on the control thing.

However, when Dead Space 2 came out I thought I would give it another try and decided to play as a console player, PC connected to the TV and using an Xbox controller. The controls took a little getting used to but then I soon got the hand of it. In a way slightly more difficult control method added to the atmosphere in a similar way that the Wii controls added to the Resident Evil 4 experience.
The game itself seemed incredibly long and is very atmospheric, it reminded me somewhat of Event Horizon and is very gory. Overall worth a punt if you are willing to make a few concessions.… Expand

Game still has a bug in it that makes game play with vsync on impossible. So, if you have a modern computer with an HD monitor, you play with screen tearing or force it through your video card. I despise bugs, this one is big. Also, the mouse controls are horrid making controlling your character very difficult and when you find a setting that works in game the cursor moves much too fast to navigate menu's. Horrible waste of money and time. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME FOR PC. EA did a horrible horrible job porting this to the PC. I'm pretty sure trained monkeys could have done a better job. First off, I hope you enjoy mouse lag, turning off vsync helps but does not remove it. Second half of the menus are off the screen no matter what you do. Third the character spins to the left if you use a USB keyboard and Mouse. This game is far to buggy from the get go and after 30 minutes of trying to fix the issues I gave up and demanded a refund from steam. Trust me, don't waste your time on this one.… Expand

A minor classic in my book, and lots of fun. Still looks pretty good for a four year old game, sound and visual design is excellent and gameplay is sufficiently nerve-wracking at times; helped in no small part by a) the claustrophobic over-the-shoulder 3rd person view and b) the slightly dodgy mouse controls.

Dead Space is a good action game. It has a thrilling atmosphere even though it isn't so scary as I supposed it to be. Also dismembering large packs of grotesque monsters is very rewarding. Main drawbacks are controls (you can't use arrow keys to move e.g.) and mouse movement is unwieldy.

Tight tunels. Weak weapon in your hand. Horrible creatures above and below you. yes, Dead Space, despite of predictable horror tricks, shows, how modern survival horrors looks like.

I've had a pretty good time with this game, although it's got it's flaws, for the most part it is so well executed they are entirely forgiven.

First things first, there are a few minor technical issues, seemingly more of an issue for some users than they were for me. Sure enough, a common problem with many console ports it seems is V-Sync related mouse lag, a real party pooper. I had it with Deus Ex Human Revolution (just used a 360 controller instead, no lag there) and sure enough I had it with Dead Space, however disabling V-Sync removed the lag and boosted the framerate quite significantly. There are a few jagged edges (the game doesn't allow variable anti-aliasing settings) but it still looks better than it does on the consoles, so I won't complain.

Technical issues aside, there are some interesting 'tributes' to a certain 1999 classic, System Shock 2. Aside from the obvious setting similarities, and occasional gameplay comparisons that could be made, there are very significant parts of plot that are basically lifted from that older game (an entire mission on the hydroponics deck is basically the same as it appears in SS2), which isn't any great sin, but it's indicative of a generally derivative tone for the bulk of the game. The monsters are largely a mixture between the creature effects from John Carpenters film 'The Thing', and the Los Ganados from Resident Evil 4. Again, nothing terribly wrong with this, they are imaginatively rendered and truly gruesome, but still, not particularly original.

The games visuals are stunningly realised, the game is simply gorgeous. The atmosphere is unrelentingly pressurised, making the game deeply tense throughout, with many scares of the typically jumpy variety underpinned by genuine discomfort. The sound design is superb, with a cacophany of terrible screams, moans, rumblings and sounds of all things liquid bursting, popping and spilling everywhere. The weapons, though there are few of them, feel suitably powerful and quite capable all of them at dismembering enemies - though some rather rough physics tends to make body parts and other objects sort of flop and roll around quite comically, the high volume of blood and accompanying squishy noises tends to nullify any distraction this might cause.

The game is a reasonable length, though not particularly long, and reasonably challenging on 'Normal' difficulty, though the learning curve is somewhat steep at the beginning (prepare to die often for the first hour or two), it balances out and eventually becomes perhaps a little easy once you get the hang of managing your weapons and ammunition properly.

Items are at first quite sparse, and upgrades (via 'power nodes') are a slow but sure process for weapons and your suit armour, but later in the game, when weapons are powered up, less ammunition is needed, and so you tend to end up with an abundance of it in my experience. There is something of an imbalance, but it is not dreadful - after all, despite the game becoming less plainly difficult, there are many sections that will still get your adrenaline pounding as some truly horrific creatures come bounding towards you, eyes-a-glowing.

So, a fun game, with some niggly flaws but on the whole there is little that could actually be described as being 'bad' about the game, but it could be more original and there is room for improvement - of which, so far, Dead Space 2 has in some ways definitely fixed, but there are other things that the first game gets right that the sequel does not (I'm past the half-way point already with DS2 after only maybe three or four hours worth - this game is definitely going to be over quickly, whereas DS1 is slower paced and more tense).

A very good game, but perhaps not quite original enough to be a true classic.… Expand

When I first picked up this game I faced similar issues as many other players on the PC platform. As I booted up the campaign and got approximately 4 minutes into the game I began to ask myself, "what sort of mad drunken sailor came up with the controls?" Even with rebinding I found myself wobbling down corridors and frequently pressing keys I'd always attributed as safety keys becoming a pain as Isaac would end up trying to force pull a necromorph towards me. Also as an aside, what sort of game outside of strict RPGs doesn't allow you to jump?! But putting my initial frustrations aside I will say this, Deadspace delivers on the scare while keeping things entertaining enough to mask the generally linear game play. In my first go around of play I found out very early on that ammo and health become a rarity into the later levels and a restart later saw me utilizing the vault much more frequently in the stores to store precious ammo and other goodies for later undertakings. I found that the story-line was very compelling and the few plot twists late in the game, while potentially obvious to somebody more intuitive than myself, were quite welcome and enjoyable in a gaming scene where you can usually see conclusions coming a mile away. The range of weapons was quite good and while I chose not to use them due to the randomization of ammo drops based on your arsenal, I found there were multiple ways to dismember and destroy. Overall once you can get used to the awkward controls (I'd recommend going through the first level on easy to get yourself settled then restarting on a harder difficulty) the story line is interesting enough to keep you playing, the puzzles are just difficult enough for interest but not so hard that you're pulling your hair out trying to figure out what to do, and the game play (controls aside) is a good mix of fright and fight to keep you on your toes. Honestly, I was so curious to find out what happened to Isaac at the end of the first game that I had to go out and buy the second one! Generally a good game for the horror/sci-fi fans out there and the control issues were greatly improved for #2.… Expand

I enjoyed this game but not all the gore - too much graphic violence. There were no nice rest periods much to contrast with sudden terror and so wasn't actually as scary as it could have been. Given almost constant terror and you get almost used to it...not as good as System Shock 2 which it copied many ideas from, from the level names, to limited ammo, sci abilities, purchase booths, weapon slots and upgrade choices etc etc. They should have had more normal looking areas to contrast with other places covered with blood and guts. Come on, we are not all bloodthirsty animals here..bit over the top for violence but nonetheless well designed and still entertaining. The biggest flaw I felt was the total linear gameplay when given a choice of open tasks and ability to travel freely around levels would have been far better. That bird crumb direction indicator made it too easy actually and should have been some level of respawning to keep it interesting - ie like System Shock 2. Also I didnt appreciate the crap controls with PC on the keyboard - really sucked but with saying all that was worth 75% in my mind. If you dont like too much violence or gore then give it a miss.… Expand

When I first started playing the game the controls seemed a bit off. It had a noticeable delay. I made some tweaks to the sensitivity, but it didn't really fix it much. It was kinda of annoying for a while, but after the first 2 chapters I got used to it. Aside from the controls, the game was glorious. The detail in the levels and aliens were astounding. They didn't skimp on anything it seemed. The cinematic sequences were so well done. I loved dieing just so i could watch the aliens nom my face off. No 2 deaths were the same. This game also has a very high fear factor. It keeps you on edge the whole game. You never know whats gunna pop around that corner. If you can overlook the the slightly laggy controls, you'll definitely be able to enjoy this game.… Expand

Dead Space was really one of the best games that survivor horror that i have played in my life, and a game where you have things that you do not hold and scenes extremely macabre, where is completely player, incredible graphics and the gameplay too, I recommend.

This is a must-play for just about everyone. It shows us just how captivating a new environment and world can be. The faceless and speechless protagonist allows you to put yourself in his shoes or allows you to imagine in your mind how he must be reacting to the horrors he witnesses. Either way, you get to explore a creepy derelict ship and uncover bit by bit exactly what happened here and what went wrong. The combat mechanics are pretty innovative and the guns are somewhat interesting but what really shines in this game is the slow discovery of an entirely new world.… Expand

Just take your damn money and buy this game! At first controls will be hard like driving a fat ass, and maybe you won't **** your pants like you did on Doom 3. But you will have a ball during the 12 chapters. Probably you'll find things which could be better. Rest assured, you will find them improved in Dead Space 2!
Small range of weapons (I just used the initial weapon throughout the whole game) and many limbs to cut off. Gameplay is varied by zero gravity sections and some walk in open space.

This game hits the horror pacing wonderfully. Slightly too much lag in the mouse controls for aiming, but once you get used to it, it's fine. If you want to play a fun game, and you want to FEEL what you're playing, turn the lights off, put on some headphones, and get ready to feel it. The most terrifying video game I have ever played. Eventually, you figure out the rhythm of when terrors will appear, but by this point the game has ramped up the difficulty, keeping the challenge high. The quests are fairly repetitive (go here, acquire item, return, repeat), but the engagements are dynamic and the character acting is great, which keeps the game from getting dull. The RPG elements of upgrading your suit and guns are fantastic because it emphasizes your specific playstyle. The only downside is that certain guns are more useful in situations than others, which means that you're pigeon-holed into always carrying certain weapons that you might not want to use (e.g. I can't find a way to efficiently defeat guardians without using the saw cutter, but I hate that gun in all other cases). Also, this game has a lot of gore- do not play in front of a sensitive crowd. People talk about the horrid controls, but I don't know what their problem is- I feel like any inefficiencies in controlling Isaac can be attributed to the fact that you are controlling an engineer, not a soldier- he's not going to be trained to perform perfectly in combat. That's the feeling I got from the controls. Other than that, this game has become one of my all-time favorites.… Expand

I rate this game at 9.5; it excels in all categories. Although this game was released in '08, the graphics are amazing. This game is Alien (movie), Doom 3, and Resident Evil all wrapped into one.

Graphics on this game is good considering i'm able to put everything to max setting without much sacrifice with frame rate. Was concerned about this over the right shoulder view people complain about when getting this game but like all games I've adapted to it and don't mind it, if you can't adapt then don't get this game. Storyline is pretty much a classic type, aliens have taken over, people go insane, betrayals, hope you get the picture. people have complained about aiming issues, i was nerved about that once to until i noticed the first gun i got had three laser points attached to it. As like Doom 3 it's predictable where aliens pop out of and when after a while in the game or as Mike P said after you get to an objective expect to turn around and fight some aliens. Controls aren't terrible just takes some getting use to. Brightness for the game is awfully high for a horror game tried to dim it down but found out the very lowest is still exceptionally bright. If your iffy on getting it wait till it is twenty dollars or less to get it.… Expand

I tend to look at third-person shooter games as a sort of secondary market to the more common first person shooter genre; however Dead Space surprised me. When I was expecting a Hitman: Contracts nostalgia trip, I received a story worthy of publication - and deservedly so with its 7.4GB of size.

This is a good game, but why did I give it a zero?
Because its made by backstabbing assholes EA with thier DRM, SECU-ROM and bullshit about how "99%of gamers are piraters"... They actually said that... This game has potential, but i hate EA for 2 things. Stupid DRM (which dead space has) and obvious console ports (which dead space is) It's stupid things like save points are an in-game object (like typewriters in resident evil), simplified inventory systems and unintuitive commands to control things, like you have to lift your hand off the mouse and use the arrow keys (not wsad) to select items from the inventory (??? DUMB). Things like that just piss me off WHEN THE MOUSE IS THERE. Other severe gameplay problems i encountered are camera angles are not adjustable, so viewing area is very poor, it may be because im playing on a 4:3 screen and its designed for 16:10, and mouse sensitivity is very frustrating, the sensitivity changes in game as in if you are close up looking at a wall, it will become very unsensitive ie you have to lift and move the mouse over at least once, whereas once you move away from the wall it becomes quite sensitive (roughly how i like it) and then in the menus it is way too sensitive. this is on full sensitivity, it is basically not sensitive enough, how i like it and too sensitive all in one. I play computer games because for a long time a lot of the best games wouldn't work on a console, not necessarily because of hardware limitations, but also because keyboard and mouse is hard to beat. Thats been blurred these days and not because consoles are getting better, but rather publishers want omniplatform releases so i think the games are getting dumbed down to work on consoles and unfortunately PC gets the short end because of that. Otherwise the game is good because it follows the tried and true plot formula seen in so many other successful games such as bioshock and system shock 2, of which it almost appears to be system shock 2 in a new 3d engine, its that similar. The graphics are very good. Basically if you can get over the DRM first and then the ported aspects of the game, its maybe worth playing if you havn't got some other well respected computer rpg's. So basically i gave it 5 because its worth playing, but it doesn't stand out as original, intuitive controls.… Expand

Doom 3. Except I already payed fifty dollars. I was hoping for something new; as powerful as Doom 3 is, it does not need to be blatantly plagiarized. New features include the strategic dismemberment, but that would be more fun if I wasn't strategically dismembering the same five enemies over and over again. It includes a ton of backtracking that promises you exploration of every centimeter of this tin cave, but that is in no way fun, as the level design is completely the same style, or lack thereof, throughout. I normally wait to complete a game before telling how bad it is to get the complete standpoint I need, but this is incredibly basic. I recently finished everything up to the part where I put this distress beacon on this asteroid, but I can't get much more specific, both because I don't remember (nor do I really care to), and I wouldn't want to give away the paper-thin story and bland characters with terrible portrayals by their voice actors to those yet to play this "game". The controls so far are a pain, as if I'm in a corner and pull up my magical menu and I'm facing just the wrong way and cannot see it. Add to that the constricted view and the inability to mouse one's way through most menus. It frustrates me so. It looks really good and has a lot of optimization, though.… Expand

GREAT GAME!

The game has a severe lack of atmosphere. I really enjoyed the first two to three hours of Dead Space but after that, the game hardly came up with something new. Even the audiologs - unlike in System Shock 2 - neither added something to the atmosphere nor explained what happened exactly on that Spaceship. In fact, the "Animated Comics" have more atmosphere than the game itself. There are a few nice moments throughout the game but the most time it's more like "Isaac do this", "Isaac fetch that", "Isaac rescue our butt.". The game has some - quite good - startling moments but it isn't scary at all. And even this startling moments stop to be startling, after they happen to you the third time. You are just running from A to B, following that blue Line which shows you where to go and kill stuff along the way and that's it. The game can be described as "What comes out, when you put 'Resident Evil' and 'System Shock 2' in a mixer while watching John Carpenters' 'The Thing'... without being scary and having much less story." Oh yeah, and with its 10 hours of gameplay it's quite short in my opinion.… Expand

Nice art, its all very cliche though. I would give this game a better rateing but it has terrible controls, The mouse, everthing actually, lags behind delaying your actions half a second. And the 3rd person camera angle combined with the field of view and offset pivot is nauseating. I would recommend you play a demo first, except that there doesnt seem to be one. So perhaps skip it for now, maybe pick it up when its in the second hand bin.… Expand
