Everything we loved about old RPGs in a complete, modern package. It's hard, it's well thought out, there's tons of options and most importantly, tons of fun. [Issue#244]

Certainly, I have no hesitation in recommending Original Sin to RPG fans old and new, provided that you're up for a challenge from very early on and don't expect to romp through, Diablo-style.

The classic RPG is making a comeback. After Shadowrun and Wasteland 2, this time it’s Divinity: Original Sin’s turn. This Kickstarter project from Belgium shows how fantasy elements can be used to their fullest extent. These developers understand what’s so great about magic and discovering a world. This is a tribute to the best Bioware, Obsidian, and D&D games that were produced with pen and paper over the last thirty years, had to offer.

Thrilling old-school role playing game with total freedom and challenging battles.

Divinity: Original Sin is able to both channel the roots of its old-school RPG ancestors such as Ultima and Baldur’s Gate, while also improving the genre as a whole in the process. From start to finish, Divinity: Original Sin is an incredible experience that is full of deep and engaging roleplaying. The true turn-based combat is a breath of fresh air in an industry obsessed with quick satisfaction and it brings you back to a time of tactics and thought. The roleplaying potential presented in quests and dialogue options puts Divinity: Original Sin decidedly above its peers in most aspects, but leaves room for improvement down the line. Larian Studios is on a strong path to returning their long-running franchise to the spotlight, for fans both new and old.

It feels like there’s a very good game inside Divinity: Original Sin, but it’s hidden away behind a thousand glitches and gameplay problems.

They done it, a game that goes back to the roots of real RPG, with all of its aspects of gameplay, story, quests, funny characters (man and beast). Great use of area effects with spells and elements. Very easy and complex crafting system that sometimes makes you laugh :)

For all those real RPG fans, a must play game of the year.

I will play it through again in the future as I didn't even use half the classes in the game. The only negative thing about this game is that there are some super troll puzzles with hidden switches that ruin my immersion. Expand

    Pro's:
+Very tactical turn-based combat, which manages to make every fight seem vastly different to previous encounters. Also the enemy AI is (mostly) very good, making combat challenging, yet rewarding
+Impressively high degree of character customisation
+Rich, beautiful graphics and map design, even on the lowest settings
+The story is engaging and well thought out
+60+ hours of content, with definite incentives for multiple playthroughs
+Even on medium difficulty, this game is very hard, exactly how a proper RPG should be!

    Cons:
-Very long loading times (although maybe that is my rubbish laptop's fault)
-The item-management system can feel a bit clunky and time consuming
-Many of the game's aspects are poorly explained, or not even explained at all! There were countless times that I was genuinely stuck, and had to consult online guides. (Although this may be a bonus for hardcore RPG fans

    Overall:
Divinity: Original Sin is a breath of fresh air in a market driven by generic shooters. Difficult, time-consuming, but ultimately great fun, this game will satisfy RPG veterans and newcomers alike.

The combat is insipid, slow, and thoughtless. Combat is turn based. If this game played like Dungeon Siege, it would have been awesome, but, it does not. The good graphics does not save this game. As a hero, you feel pretty weak and the characters are fragile compared to the enemies. The combat is painfully slow, it takes 10-15 minutes to fight 3 -6 skeletons! Your spells and abilities seem only to pinch the enemies and the enemies heal 2 turns worth of your attacks in one turn. The enemies are also very spread out so you are walking around a lot with nothing to look at except the map. This game absolutely is a chore to play, and is not fun. Don't listen to the hype, this game sucks. Expand
