Great game, already put in 45 hours. Never played the original, but this is really easy to pick up and learn.
The forced online play is acceptable, because that's the only way to stop these *nerd* hackers. The coöp is very fun, as of now I finished the first campaign on insane, the second is alot harder so I've got something to work towards. Must buy, currently 25% off, value for money is great.
So I would like to say that I believe the majority of the hate from the release of this game is from the long time players of the PC version of Dungeon Defenders. The players that have spent hundreds of hours farming and leveling and practicing with these mechanics. I am one of these people. But I also like the new release. Dungeon Defenders Eternity may be having issues getting started, but I also see more good changes than bad. I believe many Dungeon Defenders players feel like they have been forgotten or insulted by this new game. Not many people will admit to this, it is easier to get behind a bad rumor or the first negative aspect someone may find after playing a few minutes of the game. Jumping on a bandwagon is easier than trying to decide for oneself. The Dungeon Defenders players are not unjustified, this will change the game, which is something they have grown to love. No Dungeon Defenders players will be thrown under the bus because of this new game. Some people will like the old version and some people may like the new one. Things aren't as bad as they seem.
I don't know why some people dislike this game so much. Players that allready own DD1 get it for only 4.99 €. + it has either removed/added or replaced everything that was wrong with DD1.
DDE has all the addons that you would normally have to pay for.
And it is not true that you can't play alone with your friends. You're able to make a private group that will only allow the group members to join your games.
Giving it 10/10 because in my oppinion. It fixes and balances EVERYTHING that was wrong with DD1
Pros
- Way more balanced than DD1 ever will be
- Way better loot system
- New abilities
- Game is updated regurlarly
- Hacked gear + cheats reduced to a minimum because of Online only
- Proper Currency
- Crafting System
- Gear is displayed on characters (Believe me when I say, that this is one of the most wanted features for DD1)
- You can dye your gear
Cons
- New UI (Takes some time getting used to. But this is more of a personal preference)
- Shared Tavern (works like a lobby, in DD1 players would have their own.) Though it isn't as bad when you first get the hang of it
The game did look like it was in pre-alpha because it was in it. The game has updated so many times within the past months. The developers are keeping in touch with fans of the game. The game has a lot of glitches still, but half has been fixed.
Even-though it has some downsides compared to the old DD i really like this version. It got all the best DLC and has cut the crap that was not interesting anyway, they also mixed up some of the original maps/campaign and changed the classes to be more on par with each other. I'm looking forward to replay a lot of hours with my friends. The new loot system is much better to prevent arguments among other players. The in-game shop is not a problem at all as long as they keep to cosmetics only.
Don't get me wrong, a 6 is not that high of a score for an awesome game.
I loved the original dungeon defenders, more like i DEVOURED it.
and I like what they did with the maps and the new active abilities here.
the only real problem, and this destroys the game...
like it is now you are barely able to EVER log in. you just can't join the server, 16 people are trying to join together with you and are put in a waiting quee.
that is UNACCEPTABLE for an online game.
I know this game is very early release and that errors like this can happen. Even huge games like LoL and Dota suffer from it from time to time.
But as it stands now a 6 is giving it a lot already, even hesitating to put it down to 5.
I will adapt this once the devs do something about the waittimes. I really want to like this game and I see huge potential!!
I don't understand developers. I thought that new game will be more clear. I was wrong. They added som crap, like useless abilities. Some things work as they shouldn't. It's still hard to understand why one thing is better than other.
Spiders don't catch you in a web. Ninjas became real killers, they void towers and despatch you with few hits.
As you remember, it was hard to get good weps in DD, it's impossible in DDE, i am 37 lvl ranger and my dps ~5k.
All of the reviews prior to August 13th 2014 should be shelved because the events of that day could not have been foreseen by any reviewer and have (at least temporarily) greatly altered the game.
I got this game on day 1 despite the flood of negative reviews on Steam. Seeing as how there was no open beta or early access available for it (I follow a number of alpha/beta gaming sites), I assumed it would be riddled with bugs but I honestly had no idea it would get this far out of hand. Here's the scoop:
When the game launched it was missing some features that never should have been omitted, but Trendy backtracked and added private sessions while fixing/minimizing several issues with Playverse (always-online system to prevent hacking and cause absurd amounts of lag). From launch through August 7th they made a plethora of balance tweaks and changes to start bringing the game up to par, and my score for the review reflects both their effort and the fact that the game was launched as a "definitive version" with game-breaking bugs and poorly tested features.
On August 13th, patch 3.4 was a disaster of epic proportion. Up until this patch, it was known that one map dropped gear that was vastly superior to anything else in the game but players were also led to believe that the previous patch had corrected this and that what was dropping now was legitimate. Not only was this untrue, but all of the gear players had farmed from this map was retroactively nerfed and they were given a small quantity of in-game currency for their troubles. However, the best part is that the nerfed gear is still miles better than anything that can be obtained in the game, so new players are hung out to dry while players that farmed the map now have gear that's impossible to get.
I'm sure they'll get around to fixing all of this eventually, but my recommendation is:
TL;DR - Don't buy the game, but keep an eye on the DDE forums to see if something good happens. Right now there's a lot of hate and disappointment but that could change with a single patch.
