  1. A feast for the eyes and mind, Earth & Beyond is both an excellent game and a perfect example of what an MMORPG should be.

Rarely is there a game like this that can accommodate beginners and satisfy experts. Earth and Beyond is one of those rare beasts.

The framework is there for a solid game with a compelling, if not entirely original, story. [Jan 2003, p.74]

The visual treat that is the hyperdrive effect becomes painfully boring by the time you've crossed your hundredth navigation marker. [Feb 2003, p.72]
  5. Whether you're looking at the graphics, the gameplay, the server response, the community activity, this is one staggeringly good game.

With its polished gameplay and compelling story line, E&B has its phasers on Stun. [Oct 25, 2002, p.83]
  7. It’s balanced, it’s fun, and I can’t wait to get to level 140 again!

Despite the absence of much role-playing, or perhaps because of it, Westwood has created a game that is quite a lot of fun to play. In fact, it's one of the few MMORPGs that is enjoyable even if you choose not to interact with any other players.
  9. If you’ve enjoyed space sims in the past and don’t mind the simplified combat engine then go for it. With its intuitive controls, attractive graphics, and lofty scope, E&B has a lot to offer the right gamer.

A beautifully conceived piece of software, and I've never seen a galaxy come to life like I did during my time with this title. [Dec 2002, p.146]
  11. I’ve played just about every MMORPG that’s on the market today and even some that aren’t. Earth & Beyond offers a brand new flavor to the MMORPG universe that is both unique and well received.
  12. An A-list, big budget, mass market, entry level MMORPG. It's simply terrific for a while, and the easiest-to-play massively multiplayer game so far.

It’s a well-crafted, brilliantly designed, and lovingly developed space adventure that’s every bit as gripping as "EverQuest" ever was.
  14. Beyond some pesky micromanagement at times, Earth & Beyond is a well thought out and executed MMPOG in the voids of space, offering a compelling and expanding storyline set far into the future where you can actually explore the galaxy that we only dream of exploring today.
  15. A fun and accessible multiplayer universe, but probably too simplistic for the veteran space sim crowd.
  16. Fun for a short while, and at least you'll have some great sightseeing ahead of you before the game starts to lose its interest.

Even with its various issues, I absolutely fell in love with Earth & Beyond. I love the setting, the players, and the whole package in general -- I've found it incredibly innovative, and I am totally addicted.
  18. A major step forward in the genre.

The game offers just the right mix of gameplay and options for both the hardcore player and the more casual gamer.

For those new to the whole MMORPG thing, or those who are still enjoying the concept, this game is a really good bet for you. Unfortunately, for those seeking content or just burned out from the whole idea, I advise you to turn away and not give the game a second thought.
  21. Shiny graphics and slick production can’t hide the tedium.

An extremely refreshing space exploration take on the massively multiplayer genre. [Holiday 2002, p.92]

A very good-looking and VERY addictive experience, and is probably the best starting environment for those who long to enter the MMORPG experience and yet dread the horror-stories they've heard.

Pure enjoyment. Pure happiness. For me anyway when this guy was around....til EA killed it *bastards*. And you wonder what those guys were on Pure enjoyment. Pure happiness. For me anyway when this guy was around....til EA killed it *bastards*. And you wonder what those guys were on to do such a thing. If any sequel arises to Earth and Beyond, I will simply have to revisit this lovely place once more. Kudos. Full Review »

This game no longer exists. Electronic Arts shut it down. One simply cannot play it anymore. In its day, a typical level-based PvE MMORPG. This game no longer exists. Electronic Arts shut it down. One simply cannot play it anymore. In its day, a typical level-based PvE MMORPG. Heavy on the grind and shallow in gameplay (maximum spawn-camping), it did however have a good community. Featured different races/classes, ships, and NPC monsters. Yes, monsters in space! Just floating there awaiting battle. Monsters. In space. However, this is now vapourware. Full Review »

Anyone who can remember Elite will absolutely love this game! This non-player-v-player, non-linear space MMORPG mixes Anyone who can remember Elite will absolutely love this game! This non-player-v-player, non-linear space MMORPG mixes combat/exploration/trade in an online universe that can be enjoyed on your own or (where it really excels) as part of a group for extra bonus/experience points. The 6 race/class combinations are well balanced so that each has their own skills/strengths/weaknesses/styles of play. Guilds provide forums for player discussions and sharing of knowledge/equipment. Other players attitutdes are good and mostly helpful. Well supported by EA who I found to be polite and quick to respond. Any downsides? The 3D graphics are awesome although object collision is missing. Keyboard/mouse controls are easy to use although joystick support is sorely missed. Chat channels can be selected/switched off, although it annoyingly defaults to broadcast (to everyone) if you are not in a group when you gate between sectors. Minor issues that really don't affect the game play at all. I spent several months trying to find an Elite style game and this is definitely the winner! Well worth the $10-$15 per month to subscribe.
