  1. All the multimedia does is add to an already immersive and intense experience.
  2. This could very well be a prototype for the next generation of city building games to come.
  3. As a simple enough idea, the unwieldy concept of a medieval trading/intrigue/court politics title has grabbed us by the short and curlies and refuses to let go for the near future. In a nice way, if that's possible.

It's the kind of game that either enthralls you for days on end or drives you up the wall to gnaw at the curtain rods. Or both. Yes, definitely both, in my case.
  5. The gameplay is complex, nonlinear and addictive.
  6. Has something to offer fans of almost any genre--it's the sort of creative hybrid that computer gaming sorely needs.
  7. The gamplay, however, is devilishly clever in its use of politics, economics, and social standing to keep your butt planted, and your attention riveted. [Feb 2003, p.107]
  8. Immersive, looks good and is an incredible challenge.
  9. 80
The control scheme is bound to scare lots of people away before they see what it has to offer. And it has a lot to offer. It's not pretty, but it's deep.
  10. There are at least three or four games lurking in Europa 1400: The Guild, each of them enjoyable and addictive. [May 2003, p.93]
  11. A lot more difficult to learn and to play than it ought to be... [but] a great game.
  12. Both fascinating and addictive to play, and yet has so many rough edges that you might not want to play it at all.
  13. A wonderfully complex simulation that entertains more than it frustrates, though this title is clearly not for everyone. Action-oriented RTS fans should avoid it like the plague.
  14. It will take at least a full game or two (or three) before you have any idea what you are doing, but even before you learn the ropes, Europa 1400: The Guild is strangely addictive. [Apr 2003, p.85]

  1. This is one of those games in which you are either going to love it or you're going to hate it. Before buying this game you need to ask yourself: Do I sometimes have fantasies about being a olde timey blacksmith? Or do I sometimes wish I cold run my local pub back when Charles still had his head attached? Or do you wonder that you could have been a pompous textile baron in a past life? If you have ever asked these questions then you are probably going to like this game and should waste no more time not having it in your life. That said, it is not without its problems, the gameplay is repetitive, the competitive AI is rather dull at times, and once you have made it there is really nothing else to do. However there is really no other game which falls into the genre of medieval life simulator with an economic focus that is this well done. In short, don't expect a life-changing experience but do expect to have a pleasant weekend followed by extensive research into pre-industrial economies. Full Review »
  2. A very impressive economy simulator for a medieval town. It offers so many in depth profession and opportunities that can lead to many playthroughs and challenges, opening new opportunities the longer you play. While the game has become a bit dated, it offers a good afternoon or two of addictive playtime (and even has multiplayer). One of the best economy based games I have ever seen. Full Review »

Unique! Sleeper hit of the year. Haven't had so much fun since Pirates! Dynasty building, trading, political intriugue, kidnapping, revenge, true love... and much more. Many games within a game. High replayability. Some instability prevents a 10 score. Full Review »
