The hallowed memories of yesteryears games makes the Fallout tradition a challenging project to have undertaken. Bethesda has not released a perfect game, but there is no doubt in my mind that this is indeed a worthy heir to the Fallout lineage. What it has lost by leaving the 3rd person isometric view it has gained back 100 fold by an amazingly detailed world, storylines that go far beyond simple lines of dialog, and many different paths for the player to choose. There is in fact far more content than any single playthrough needs to experience, promising greater replayability. Expand

I just bought fallout 3 6 days ago and I'm just blown away... I played fallout 1 and 2 and I have to say that it does live up to the legacy ! It is definitely one of the best games of his generation (a generation of many many really bad and dull games...but fortunately there is fallout 3 [and starcraft 2 let´s hope it goes well...]). The only negative point about this game are the many crashes for the pc version although that doesn't disturb me from loving this game to the full extend, because :yeah it´s that good. Expand

Okay, lots of people gave this game bad reviews so I'd like to address some of those, First off to the hundred or so people who said "Its hard to find ammo" I say, Your playing in a nuceluar wasteland after a huge atomic war, ammo isn't really a main concern for people then. To the people who say i cant find anyone to interact with I say, GO TO A CITY!, For the game itself its gameplay is amazing, the guns are realistic the textures are amazing the PC versions great because you can mod. Fight sequences are unique and challengeing and it is hard to kill thinkgs, guess why, THEY ARE MUTATED HUMANS! MUTATED! HUGE GREEN MUTANTS! Overall this game is definitly worth 50 bucks hell this games worth 100, ive got 800 hours for Fallout 3 on steam so thats gotta mean something. Expand

There's enough details in the other user comments to justify a 10. I'm just adding my vote to help offset the retards who give it a zero. Zero would mean the worst game ever made. FO3 is NOT the worst game ever made. It's fine to have your opinion that FO3 might be the worst Fallout game ever made. But the worst game ever made? Voting any game a zero is a sign of a hollow vote. Wish there was some way to flag retarded posts for deletion... And a lesser rant: for people that refuse to give a 10 because that would mean a perfect game... umm... then you really have a scale of 9. 10 means "as perfect as any game you will buy at present." The industry and technology are advancing, and will always advance. Ratings on video games are on a curve, not an absolute. You know, by that logic, why give things 9... surely the 9's of the future will make current games look like a 5, maybe we should reserve more than just 10 for the future? Yeah, let's rate all current games a maximum of 5 so that the future has room for 6,7,8,9, and 10s. D'oh! Expand

It seems that some people bought F3 having already decided it was a steaming pile. Anything would be considered a steaming pile if approached in this way. F2 was considered a steaming pile by many players of F1 because they approached it in this way. Think about that before venting your nerd rage.

This game is pure epic. It had nothing that I didn't like. Great story, great ACTING, great horror themes, great gunplay and combat. It was beautiful. The weapons were intriguing, the hardware support made me think that Bethesda still love us and the DLC's were brilliant. At least 60hrs of gameplay for the completer, and I went back to it loads more times just for the sake of it. Then I met something I didn't like. It had Games for Windows Live integration for achievements and such, so I tried it out and I hated it. I had to use a "storage device" when I wasn't logged in. Garrrg! Stupid Microsoft. Anyway, great game Bethesda! Expand

I think i need to defend my score for this game, this was my first Bethesda game to play since oblivion, so the retro style, the gameplay elements, the RPG backbone and the well crafted story caught me by surprise. Still, i have to recognize it gets repetitive and buggy at times, and that it was probably the game responsible for the actual stupidity of many game developers, with its interest in making money by DLC and beating franchises with sticks to see how much money they can get away with before having to start making decent (and complete) games again. Stunning game, the whole apocalyptic atmosphere really works in this game, exactly what I have been waiting for. Day/Night cycles are impressive, however would have loved to see much more changing weather... V.A.T.S should be a buyable upgrade... it makes for very easy killing. I must say im very impressed so far, and hopefully look forward to fallout 4 if it is planned.

This is along side COD 4, Halo 3, and Gears 2 as the best games in history. BTW Derek T, you are a dumb f**k. I am pretty sure that there is something wrong with your brain. The game is a extremely improved mod of Oblivion, if a mod at all (most people don't think that it is a mod, it took three years to make). The movements and animations are better than any other free world game, just look at San Andreas 2, and there is a world of difference. There is no reason that anyone should rate this less than a 9. This is Oblivion in future.I give it a 10 not only because i liked The elder scrolls 4 oblivion very much but for its nice game play elements as well as the exploring world.A nice game detailed and in which the atmosphere is very very realistic. You can see the elder scrolls elements in it like jumping at a place if you have discovered it or the usage and repair of items. But netherless is a solid game even if the main story is short has many side quests Expand

Great game, lots to do and a massive play area to explore, I sort of don't like VATS and the large amount of ordinance it takes to put things down, but that doesn't even merit half a point deduction.
Story is pretty interesting in a wasteland of uninteresting stories that fill most games these days.
Really sucks you in, just wish the FPS aspect was a bit better implemented ie. no autoai

A good FPS with some RPG elements. Pro: - Immersive, huge environments: you can play Fallout 3 for months before finishing it.
    - Good graphics: I really enjoyed the "comics-style" graphics.
    - Simple but not easy: yes, you have to use few commands but you have a lot of stuff to do.
    - For the beginner and for the pro: I enjoyed the simplicity of my first games then I switched to the "pro"
gaming LOL just joking but yes, the game was really hard and time-consuming.
    Cons:
    - Frustrating: and you can bet it, expecially the first games, when you learn that aiming can be used not only to eliminate your enemies but also to disarm them. - Time consuming: yes, Fallout 3 is simply a great game but you have to play it for hours - weeks - to finish it. And you have some fun DLC too so ... some more time.
    - Cartoon: it's a pro or a con, it depends.
    - Nukes: the game is about a post-nuclear war and you can use some "radio" equipment against your enemies. I know it's only fiction but someone said me he found it not good.

I would recommend Fallout 3 to everyone (especially game of the year edition), so much to do, but just not enough time! I don't know how many days, weeks and months I used to explore every little bit, taking all the quest, following the 'good' storyline and the 'bad'. This game is what you should play -Bethesdas bigest succes! Graphics is great, and you don't need those high-end-computers for it.
Comparede to their new game Skyrim, this is the bomb! Graphics is not much different, but still in Skyrim you need to buy a computer with the price about 2000 U.S dollars to play it at the fullest, no just play it without lagg. Don't always look forward, also look backwards, because you will find this game, and I can ensure you, it is worth every goddamn coin!

I think I speak for all that are great minds when I say, we don't want structure, we don't want a direct quest line, we want real world choices and their consequences, we want to be able to nuke villages and screw things up, we want to be a serial murderer and murder an entire street of people. These things are possible in Fallout 3, because it's a game which actually is a real RPG, you can be what you want. If you want a linear shooter where you just go from point A to B shooting things, following quest markers, first of all go die, but if you aren't willing to do this service to the world, then at least don't complain when you play an epic game like fallout. It's a brilliant game, the style and art really suck you in, it's way better than elder scrolls in this respect, it's not a lame ass medieval game all over but really a dark sad world in ruins after a nuclear disaster. You will feel lost, because that is what the character is supposed to feel as he steps out on this strange world. You will feel the game. Few games achieve this. This is truly one of the best games in the past decade, and one of the few "epic" games ever. No - I am not giving it a 10, because for one it is much too short, for two the max level is WAY too low except if you DLC, which is **** and for three the games posses after all these years game breaking bugs, which if screwed up and would never have been tolerated if it had been a japanese title. This is quite the extraordinary game. Not only do you have have the amazing story line, you have your choices on how you want to carry it out. You can choose to go down the path of the good and the righteous, or you could be as evil and maniacal as you wish. And you don't just have to do the campaign, you have many many choices of little side quests to do along the side. Depending on how you play the game, you get a different ending. This does have its little flaws... its little glitches, but nothing major... and nothing that takes away from the playablity and the fun. Expand

This is one of the best RPGs I've ever played in my 36 years. There's a large world to explore with numerous imaginative quests that can be done any time you like. The perks system makes the game especially fun. I played this game 8 hours a day for a week. This is the only game in which I've ever had to choke back tears at the end -- literally. Great game, I haven't played the previous Fallout games but I really enjoyed playing Oblivion, this is more of the same but with cooler weapons and a more interesting setting. Despite being mainly grey the landscape is far from being bland, everything seems natural and the attention to detail is superb - it's the kind of world that just begs to be explored. Combat is fun and the AI appears to be an improvement over that seen in Oblivion. Everything runs like a charm even with graphics settings turned up quite high. I feel I have only just begun to scratch the surface of this game but so far it lives up to all my expectations .... and then some, I can see Fallout 3 occupying quite a bit of my time over the coming weeks. I love this game. Combat is interesting, dialogue is great, but is hinderd by bad voice acting, i love the fiction, lots of content, but not half as much as oblivion, which makes sense because the fallout isnt bethesdas series, and too remain faithfull to the series, they have to stay with the established fiction.

Probably one of the best games I've ever played, it improved on Oblivion and its engine, had a fantastically immersive game world with an awesome atmosphere - loved the radio personally, much of the lack of the variety in Oblivion was dealt with and there were a ridiculous amount of unique locations, the stat system worked just fine if you ask me, and I found the graphics to be a lot better than the 'dated' graphics others are talking about here. Only faults are poor AI, a fair amount of bugs (but considering the scope of the game it's hard to fault them) and VATS glitching sometimes. Otherwise, between this game and the DLC I've spent well over 100 hours in and around the Wasteland. Loved every minute of it! Expand

BethesdaSUX is retarded . . . So Fallout 3. The entire fate of the Fallout series falls upon Bethesda's shoulders. Do these people know the fallout universe? do they even try to convey the hilarious parallel universe? Hell yeah! Bethesda created a perfect game to go along with the fallout series mostly because they went away from where the other fallouts took place. They created their own world using the rules of fallout and it does not fail. VATs is the most satisfying way of killing anything. I see where some people are coming from, when comparing the original installments in the franchise with this newest one. It is indeed quite a bit different. But different isn't bad. I'm really thoroughly enjoying this gaming experience. It is predominantly a first-person/third person shooter with a stronger (but not pure) RPG element. Despite all that, it's really just well put together. Most people downvoting Fallout 3 are basically cult-loyal to the original 2 games. I don't really think anything could have been done to appease these people. I really enjoyed 1 & 2, and 3 does feel incredibly different, and at times, it's hard to take it seriously as a 'true' addition to the series.. but it's definitely addictive, immersive, vast, detailed, beautiful and enjoyable. I think that deserves a 10 in itself. There's really nothing that I don't like about this game. As far as action-RPGs are concerned, this totally blows Far Cry 2 and Clear Sky out of the water. Get it. The people complaining are really being way too anal for their own good. They're just upset that this game isn't Fallout 1 or 2. Expand

Fallout 3 is a game that was pretty much abandoned by Bethesda a short time after hitting the shelves. The game did receive five DLC-titles but the lack of bugfixing patches made alot of people quit playing it. I gave Fallout 3 a chance, and i didn't like it. I thought that the game was too open, it didn't tell me where i needed to go. I've played a lot of single-player games and most of them tell you exactly what to do, always. Fallout didn't, and it scared me to have so much freedom. It took me a somewhere between 8-10 of hours of gameplay to completely grasp the Capital Wasteland and it's sheer size. It is enormous. When i finally realized how fantastic Fallout 3 was, it had me in it's claws. And it hasn't let me go since. Fallout 3 has a pretty good main story, but the side missions are better. The RPG-elements are more than satisfying but the game's strong side is it's atmosphere. I think everybody should at least try Fallout. It is a beautiful game set in a horrifying world. Expand

Outstanding. If you like games that give you a sense of genuine exploration, you'll love this - except if you're stuck in the past worshipping the original games. Nostalgia is a wonderfull thing, but any new game should be judged on it's own merits. The vats targetting system works very well, the animations are a great improvement over Oblivion (animation always seems to be Bethesda's weak point), and the copy/paste dungeons are gone. Yes, some areas look the same, but they don't suffer from the indentical locations that plagued Oblivion's dungeons. Make sure you try this for yourself, and if you do see someone moaning about the gameplay, I'll put money on them wanting to be back living in an isometric past. Expand

The game is (sorry but only a superlative will do) brilliant. I would definitely say it was the best RPG of 2008, in-fact quite possibly one of the finest RPGs of all time. I shit you not. I took away one point as I believe it takes some perseverance to truly appreciate it; I did not enjoy it immediately, and many others I have spoken to have said initially they found it hard to get into. But (and I know I'm using all the clichés in the book) it grows on you. Grows like a mutated third arm following some serious radiation sickness. Really, buy this game. Buy it even if you didn't like Oblivion, a game to which it owes a great deal, yet Fallout 3 is an entirely different beast, and I mean this in the best way possible. In fact, I urge you to buy it even if you don't like RPGs or FPSs: You WILL get hooked. Hooked on psycho, jet, buffout. I mean, it allows you to play at your own pace, yet it constantly gives you something to strive for. I haven't had a dull moment within the game were I really couldn't be bothered to do anything. When it comes to the time that you want to replay it, you should set yourself personal challenges; I decided with one character I was going to wear the tunnel snake jacket armoured with a baseball bat. And I felt damn cool. Especially whilst you bat some innocent NPC to death, who doesn't really deserve it, but you just like to admire the brutality in V.A.T.S slow-mo, with a host of different camera angles. Really, I cannot fault the gameplay, the atmosphere, the story, the graphics, nothing, aside from a few bugs/glitches here and there, but that's all due to the complexity and depth of the game. So, to re-iterate; buy it. Expand

How could you not love this game? It is easily the best RPG that I have played. Its deep enough to cause you to think about what you are going to do next without scaring you that if you do one little thing that you will ruin the entire game. Sure, if you walk around, constantly mowing down enemies with a gatling laser machine gun might be meticulous... Well, it really isnt, but thats about the only negative thing I could think of. It does depart a bit from the old Fallout games, but it at least puts it in a different setting as an excuse. Bethesda did it's best to take this classic franchise and slap it on their Oblivion engine, but a few elements did fall through the cracks. And while it is a bit buggy, it's still a valiant effort. And while I'm an old skool bitter gamer, enough of the original managed to get translated into this title that I find myself forgiving its many sins. There's a lot to hate (mono-chromatic environments, weak character models/ animations, Oblivion similarities, etc.), but there's a lot more to love. The notorious character progression system from Oblivion is replaced by the system that the Fallout is loved for. Item degradation and repairing them makes for a tough challenge in the wasteland. However, there's enough content that those who are perceptive and resourceful will be just fine. Distributing the right skill points and perks at the right time in line with your own play style will result in a very rewarding experience. This is a first person RPG and hardly a shooter. Shooter purists expecting one will be disappointed. However, the VATS / game play pause / targeting feature does a good job of making up for this. If you're looking for an exact translation of the Fallout franchise, this is as close as you'll find. My feeling is that the magic that came from Black Isle Studios is very difficult to duplicate. Take my feedback with a grain of salt, but I'm I remember the original F1, F2, and Fallout Tactics... this title isn't perfect, but I find myself loving it anyway. With a few patches, it should be much improved. Expand

I just read through a couple of 0 ratings and it seems like these people didn't even play the game. There are definitely similarities to Oblivion, but they are quickly forgotten due to the strong atmosphere. As for the complaints about color...Did you guys even play Fallout 1 or 2? It's a barren, desolate world that is devoid of color because the world has been destroyed. It9;s not supposed to be bright shiny rainbow land. I'm sorry, but after so many years after a nuclear holocaust, paint is probably going to have faded away. Fallout 3 does a fantastic job painting a bleak, dangerous world where you start out struggling to survive against the odds and slowly develop skills to become king of the wastes. The game also allows you to develop a character that works best with your style. Your choices really do matter outside of the main narrative. Blow up Megaton early on and you'll struggle through the rest of the game because you've lost the ability to gain the experience and bonuses from the quests obtained there. Stab the people who want to blow it up in the back and you'll be dogged by assassins for the rest of the game. All in all, the game is superbly done with an atmosphere that expounds on the foundation created with Fallout 1 and 2. If you want a game experience that is exactly like the first two games, you won't get it. But you will get an enjoyable romp through a desolate, dangerous, and expansive world that feels familiar and foreign at the same time. Expand

I am very surprised by the other users' ratings of this game. IMO, this is the best game I've played in a really long time. If you are used to a scripted/linear game, you may not like it because the entire premise of the Fallout series is that it is non-linear. You can do a huge variety of things from being good, evil, neutral, mechanic, gun specialist, energy weapons, melee, etc. If you think the game is too easy, I'd be curious to know what difficulty level you are playing. I do admit that the Super Mutants should be a bit tougher than they are, but they're not easy especially if you run into a whole patrol. To each their own I guess. This game is truly quite miraculous and here's why: It combines in a wonderful way features of FPS and RPG. It even involves some SIMS-type game play including the decorating of your own house, wherever that might be (see for yourself). The playing area is large and flexible, you'll find that restrictions are very few in number. The weapon/item arsenal is very large and what9;s more, you can make your own weapons or other stuff. The fact that the game is situated to happen in Washington DC area (and outside) adds to the excitement. This together with the Cold War-type of background story cooks up an amazing game atmosphere. I could go on for pages, enough spoiling though: the goodies are all there for you to find. Bad sides? That's a tough call. If I was forced to dig out one, that would be the fact that the main story is so short. Compared to how large the area is and how much there is to explore and try out, the main storyline seems inadequate. This combined with the fact that once you finish the final objective the game ends is disappointing. Nonetheless the game is wonderful and if you're not in a rush and like scouting around, you'll find tons of stuff to do and even if you only did the main story line there will be hours after hours of gaming to do. I have no regrets of making this purchase even if it cost me $30 :) Expand

One of the best game i have ever played. Awesome environment with stunning graphics, sounds and atmosphere. What i liked about this game it's the oportunity of do whatever you want, go to any place you want, and especially the oportunity of take different decisions. At the beginning i didn't hold hope for this one since i never played Fallout 1 and 2. But then i gave it a try and i realized how amazing it is.. This is a ''MUST HAVE''.. Expand

I'm an old gamer who started playing games in 1984 and few games have surprised me so well like Fallout 3. It has great graphics, a huge game world full of side quests that will entertain you for hundred hours, cinematic combat, good weapon choices, detailed scary monsters and much much more. But most of all, the gameplay immersion.... oh God, the immersion with this game is absolutely wonderful: the breathtakin' nuclear landscape of D.C., the sad '50s retro-music and the attention put on details are all amazing and makes you feel like you were really left alone wandering around in that raped postnuclear world. Even the sophisticated AI routines of the NPCs make them look alive and real. What more could you ask from a game? Nothing is my answer. I thank and bow to Bethesda team for this gorgeous game that will enter the videogame history for sure. Now come with me into the Wastelands. Expand

Holy heck, I'm surprised you guys gave it a low rating. I played Fallout 2, and personally I find Bethesda did a great job switching Fallout over to more action oriented. It is in fact different than Fall0out in multiple ways, but it's better to think the game as its own. Great graphics, achievements are there, role playing to boot. I have experienced no bugs other than having to turn of DotNet3.0 in control panel, and it runs incredibly smooth on my average comp (at least 40fps). I recommend this game to anyone who hasn't played fallout, i think bethesda targeted you for the game. However, if you are a fan of the old games, there is plenty enough in here, but remember, it's not the west coast in the game, things must be a little different. Expand

This game accomplished one of the goals I never thought it could: I felt like I was in the world of Fallout I and II. The atmosphere of the first few levels inside the vault was as expected, quirky and a time to learn how to play. Once outside I saw the same landscape you would expect to see in the first two games, but from a powerhouse FPS perspective. That's a compliment if anyone is wondering. Dogmeat makes a return appearance (as he did in Fallout 2) and the brotherhood of steel are still there, as are supermutants, ghouls, molerats, giant ants, ridiculously overpowered weapons like the nuclear catapult and rockitlauncher. While some might complain that the game feels a bit like Oblivion (there is something about how the texture work was done that shows Bethesda's fingerprints a bit too much) I would say that is nothing to complain about. The controls are tight and the rather well done VATS system (which makes every bullet a ballet) gives perfect moments of gore in the middle of frenzied firefights. My one qualm might be with the inclusion of housing and upgrades for housing which brought me out of the fantasy a bit. This forces you to sleep in beds to regain health rather than simply resting. The enemies do get a bit dull at lower difficulties too. The first time I saw a group of gangers fighting supermutants I was level 4 and remembered Fallout 2's rather difficult to kill supermutants. So I turned tail and ran like hell only to discover, much later on, that the green beasts are a bit of a push over. Same with Ghouls (who could be found in the second fallout as zombie-like enemies). I was frightened at first (a creature screaming and running at me without skin reminded me of Oblivion's rather hard to kill zombies) But then I blew its head off and kept going. For those who have fond memories of Fallouts of the past (and are not as obsessed as mr. SUX) this will feel like going home all grown up. For those who enjoyed Oblivion, enjoy the better story and firearms. For those looking for a good game, enjoy. Expand

First off, this game isn't perfect - I have yet to find one that is - but i'm giving it a perfect score rather than a 9 just to spite BethesdaSux, a butthurt loser who probably hasn't even played this game. On to the game. I'm only a few hours in, and I am completely drowning in the depth and immersion. I loved fallout 1 but really didn't care for fallout 2 (too much extraneous and stupidly incredulous stuff world and narrative wise), and fallout 3 is much more akin to the first than the second. I'm not one for writing big reviews, so i'll sum it up - impossible to do everything with one character, perfectly balanced combat (is this fun vs is this necessary), WAY beyond "oblivion with guns", and gameplay-wise the crown prince elect of titles like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (inspired mostly by fallout in the first place), sitting next to the dusty throne of the grizzled old king Deus Ex - whose own genetic heir, deus ex invisible war, was a retard with multiple sclerosis that the kingdom disowned out of sheer lack of love. Anyway, long story short, fallout 3 is a worthy successor to its predecessors and is leaps and bounds above "oblivion" in every single way. Expand

Amazing game that has managed to keep most of the elements from fallout that I loved. Only problems I've found is the inability to remap keys properly (some keys don't work, and defaults are kept despite changing them). I can explore seemingly endlessly and run into different tribes, factories, etc.

Absolutely amazing! Plays much more like Oblivion (drastically improved in every way, mind you) in a futuristic-setting rather than a true Fallout game, but it is an incredible experience nevertheless. I can't believe people are actually saying the graphics are mediocre. In my opinion, the graphics of this game are right up there with Crysis, Call of Duty: WAW, and whatever the current standards for graphics are today. But unquestionably, it's the exquisite, open-ended gameplay that makes this game so memorable. A game for the ages! Expand

I REALLY want to give this game 10 as I'm pretty sure that it's the best that I have ever played (X-Com being the other contender)! I was completely drawn into the game, its storyline and the whole environment and it genuinely felt like I had bought an awesome 40 hour film ... that I could take part in! Every single detail was addressed. I dont think I'm giving much away when I say that hearing the radio presenter talk about what is going on in the world ... and then hearing him report something that you just did is awesome. Even more impressive was that he died (well, I killed him), and then a cleaner was left to try and take his place. Awesome little touch! However ... The game does crash and I actually created a condition that meant that it would always crash. However, given how utterly breathtaking the rest of the game is I can forgive it entirely. Also, anyone complaining about WFGL should just shut up. I'm guessing your using a pirated copy ... Expand

To those who think the game sucks because of crashing on your PC: get a friggin X-Box, or a better PC. You ineptitude should not reflect in your gamer rating. As for the game itself, this is probably the first RPG I have ever liked, mostly because it plays both as a shooter and as a quest-based role-player. The side quests, while not all linked or necessary, make the replay value of the game huge, not to mention the customization. Expand

The game is vast, lanscapes changed all the time. Characters have a good standing with the rest of the game. The vault was once your home and now the rest of the wasteland is and will become. Although the game has various bugs which I experienced, including getting stuck in rocks, moving weird. Plus some others. Although being able to kill the same characters over and over again was interesting. Further on in the game missions do become a bit tedious, but the game has unlimited potential. Overall, a great game. I struggled with a rating, but in the end went with a 9 because despite its flaws, it's really a very fun and addicting game that still keeps me coming back to play it. The main storyline isn't thrilling, but the numerous side quests and unmarked side activities hold the player's interest and are far more fun than the main quests. Tons of stuff to find and explore, lots of situations to deal with. The game's problems are significant, though, and this is where rating it is difficult. The graphics are pretty good on the highest settings, but I've noticed that it slows down computers (sometimes even the consoles) more than it ever should. A machine that runs Far Cry 2 flawlessly will still have trouble with F3 from time to time. Lots of oversights; floating objects/debris piles/buildings/etc. Many bugs and glitches that are potentially game-breaking. Character animations needed some work, and I did not like the built-in inaccuracy of the weapons. The fact that I still give it a 9 out of 10 shows that I think the gameplay is solid, and the game, at its core, is a great one. Expand

As a fan of the fallout series, I really enjoyed this game. Despite the vastness of the landscape the surroundings still has a handcrafted touch - the world is full of small details, hidden caches and interesting locations to discover. What finally won me over, however, was the dialogue and plot content - finally a computer rpg that in some how resembles actual pen-and-paper rpg:s! Quests that are unique and consist of more than the usual "kill 100 monsters", "find item x" or "deliver a message to npc y" -stuff. To sum it up, the game looks fine, dialogue is good, skills are useful and going up levels is fun since all skills are equally useful. Expand

This is truly a masterpiece! Anyone saying otherwise just doesn't understand the gaming world. Only the amount of effort put into this game is... unreal just so unreal. You can only imagine how big and complex the fallout world is when you finished the game, and every single sidequest. As is said, the world of Fallout is HUGHE! you would spend full days of exploring every bit of the capital wasteland. To sum up more of the pro's: -MANY quests -very good story line -full voice acting of every character, and good voice acting -proably the game with the most freedom you'll find to date -extremely deep, in terms of missions, stories etc. -stealth -many different kind of weapons -decent graphics (not stunning, but it fits just right) The only con's i could find are some minor bugs, and the combat being 'meh' sometimes (why is the crosshair constantly only 2 arrowheads? realy a good crosshair for different types of weapons would make this game even better as it already is!). This game is almost better than part 2 of the Franchise. I say "almost", because it tries to send a message and doesn't quite succeed. The ending is as linear as that of Fallout 2, only more visually impressive and a dozen times worse. The lack of post-game gameplay is disappointing, considering this is a Bethesda game, and the lack of a narrated epilogue detailing the future of the setting is disapointing, considering this is a Fallout game. This is an extremely good game. I did not like Oblivion for various reasons, but this game does away with most of what annoyed me in Oblivion (the bad combat system etc.). This game is a great First Person Shooter, but it has a lot of depth too. Under the surface, it's an RPG, so although the combat is as fun and visceral as an FPS, it is a lot less shallow because the game requires a lot more thought and care. You have to explore, pick the character traits that best suit your style of play, you have to build up your character's weapons and armour, and there is a real story with lots of real characters. So to me it's the best of both worlds. RPG's have depth but poor combat, and FPS's have good combat but are shallow. This game has the best of both worlds with great combat and lots of depth. It's just a fantastic game. I am constantly reminded of the magnificent System Shock games, and that is no small feat. Expand

While, its not perfect, this is probably the best game I will play all year. As for the people giving it low scores, they can't seem to get over the fact that the fallout franchise is being made by a new company. This game is worth your money. I played for about 10 hours and then restarted to build a better, stronger character once I had learned the ropes and am now looking at over a hundred hours of gameplay. Yes, it is similar to oblivion, but it is made with the same engine so their are going to be similarities. The dialogue is great, even if some of the voice actors are not. But I want to say this to the hardcore FO 1 and 2 fans: if you wanted Fallout 1/2 then go back to playing 1 and 2. Face it, the isometrical perspective in RPGs is old. Zelda on the NES old! Fallout 3 is a true masterpiece of PC gaming and probably the best RPG since Oblivion. Yes, I played F1 and F2, and yes I love the Elder Scrolls series. Somebody tries to compare Mass Effect with F3. ME does not deliver even a shred of RPG experience you get with F3. This game deserves all the money the developer asks for it. And considering the poor state of PC gaming industry today (i.e. a tidal wave of ultra-low quality PC games that flooded the market in the recent years) it deserves it even more. Overall an amazing work. The world begs to be explored and there are many mysteries to unearth. The character progression system is easily learned and quite fun, yet also has a level of depth allowing for countless types of characters and strategies. The dialogue and story draw you into the world well. Praise is also given for the scalability of the engine. I am playing it on a budget laptop with an AMD Turion 2.0 GHz Dual Core Processor and ATI 3100 Integrated Graphics. On that system I have Fallout 3 running at 800x600 with low/medium details and HDR Lighting activated. The framerate is smooth and the game looks amazing. Watching the post apocalyptic sunrise on a balcony in Megaton is a sight to behold. Wandering dead and broken highways, strolling through ghost towns and empty shells of cities is engrossing. It truly feels like exploring the remnants of civilization. The action that is mingled with the exploration is also top notch. The V.A.T.S. targeting system adds more tactics to encounters and is a joy to use. That's not to say that you're forced to it, regular first person combat works swimmingly as well and mixing the two is great fun. I highly recommend this game! Expand

I will say this right off the bat: I have not played any of the original Fallouts so I do not know how this game measures up to them. Also, I am primarily a FPS gamer, not an RPG gamer. With that said, Fallout 3 is a genuinely fun and entertaining game. The detail of the Fallout world is amazing and the weapon selection is awesome. However, the game does lose a point for poor physics and the way it seems to chug along at random points. This game is beautiful--I don't fully understand what some people are saying about it being last gen. No, it's not Crysis, but it is gorgeous, meticulously detailed, and totally atmospheric. I didn't play the original Fallout games until recently, so I don't have some of the nostalgic attachment to them that some have--yes, I would have appreciated more humor (though there are many genuinely funny moments in the game, some of them very dark indeed), and yes the difficulty is a bit uneven--but on the whole, this game is completely faithful to the spirit of Fallout. Awesome game, a blast to play. The best thing about this game is the attention to detail and the incredible stories that each of the game's areas tell--there are no bland run of the mill dungeons or towns or anything--every place has a story waiting for the observant explorer to discover it. This it the beauty of that game, and it's what keeps me up regularly til 4 in the morning playing. A few bugs (all of which I have faith will be quickly addressed--Bethesda is pretty good about such things) keep it from being a 10 from me, but make no mistake--this is not a game you should miss. Well what can i say... this game is Jaw dropping amazing. I don't think i have ever played a game so completely absorbing. When i finally finished the game i felt completely lost... like i was missing something i really cherished. I was straight away googling to find out information about whether there would be an expansion. This game is really about personal preference. You can do most things your own way.. if someones talking down to you.. you don't have to take it, just hit the foolish sucker with your super sledge then rob his dead body blind haha. I won't go to much into the specifics of the game as people should just try this game and learn for their selves. Best game i have played in years and quite possibly the best game i have ever played.. and that is really saying something since im a multiplayer fiend. The other realy great thing about this is that it is built on the Oblivion Engine, Oblivion is one of the most modded games in history by fans. What this means is that fallout 3 is going to get a whole heap more content in the near future for us to play around with. The Modders already are very talented and practiced with Oblivion engine so we can expect the same on Fallout. The last thing i have to say is shame on you to the hardcore fans of fallout that gave this game a Zero. Even if this game had nothing to do with fallout it would still be one of the best games ever made. The fact you gave it a zero just shows that your reviews should not even be posted on this site. It makes me quite sick to be honest. I have played both Fallout and Fallout 2 and this game absolutley reeks of fallout and does the game justice. Game follows very closely to Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. Very pleased with visuals as well as great voice acting. Immersive game play that brings back old and creates new memories of great gaming under the fallout name.

This game can range from a 0-10 depending how you play it, so for example if you put it, not paying any attention to the story line just running around gunning people down, you most properly wont enjoy it, but if you have say a free week at least, lock your self inside your room, put in Fallout 3, grab all the food you need then...go, This game will not be enjoyed where you are distracted, you need to be paying attention to play this game. A very immersive game, even if not all features, items and game mechanics that were present in previous incarnations have made it into this one, making it a bit less S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Played about 20hrs (on normal difficulty) and got about half the map uncovered (without actually exploring a good part of the locations yet) and it still sucks me in every time I start the game. Graphics are adequate to nice, the inventory system works rather well even if it's classical fallout style (with a bit of console flair) and not as fast as most MMORPG's. Sound effects are very well implemented IMO, with gun shots/salvos being very loud and boomy, while even small noises can be heard when sneaking through the wasteland and tunnels. Dialogues are done by seemingly pro speakers, if a bit dull/sterile at times. Quests are plentiful and make sense most of the time, even if some are a bit dull. A bit more of the classical Fallout humour would help, especially since the 3D makes the game intense at times. Put all together a very good game with a huge playing time, high replay value and hopefully a few nice extensions for later. If you don't get it now be sure to grab the GameOfTheYear/Gold/Budget or whatever edition will come out eventually. And sorry for those folks who have problems in running the game. Thankfully I only got random crashes once every 10 hours or so. And my machine is a tad old and rusty anyway and some other games crash too. GL and fingers crossed. Expand

Wow! This game is totally awesome! Selecting your sex, your Look, and first missions when you are a baby. Fixing guns, armor accessories and other stuff. And details of world and effects are amazing! THANK YOU FALLOUT3 team! :3

Just ignore bums like "BethesdaSUX" (short form of that nick would be BS...) No, it's not Bethesda who suck, it's YOU. They create great games with a lot of creativity involved. YOU Mr. BS are creating nothing but bs and pointless whining. Stop wasting peoples time and do the world a favour - just get lost.

Amazing game, has it's flaws but really is a work of art. I can't put it down. I'm sure there are some inconsistencies but I'm having FUN and not going to nit pick. To me it's not oblivion with guns, other than an enhanced engine, the story, leveling, lore, environment is completely different. As for being all one color? it's called a wasteland (and it's not really 1 color), not sure what people expect, there's not going to be a flowery romp in the country side. Expand

Look, I loved the original Fallout games too. However, this game exceeded my expectations completely. I loved this game, and I believe that the effort that went into this game is what makes it good. Sure, it's not by Black Isle and sure there are a few bugs, but that is no reason to give it a terrible rating. Everyone has their own opinion. You cannot say a games sucks if there are many people who find it enjoyable, you may hate it but someone else will love it. Now Turok... THOSE were bad. Expand

Very good game so far, ingenious tutorial system. I am someone who very much enjoyed Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, so I have no problem with Fallout 3. The characters and story are very engaging and interesting.

I know this game has been out for a long time, but I just wanted to see what it got. I saw someone who said they played it for thirty minutes, then got bored and stopped playing. I know a lot of people like that person. They start playing Fallout 3, and don't like it, but a lot of the time, if you keep playing, you like it. I love the game. It is awesome. I've played it and all the DLC's. I've beaten it five times. Expand

Fallout 3 is amazing game. The game does a great job blending FPS and RPG elements with a very in-depth story. Also the detail level in the game is astounding, making the entire capital wasteland world seem real. Fallout gives you almost complete freedom with how you want to play the game and progress through the story, which makes the replay value very high. My only gripes with this game that holds it back from being a 10 is that it needs a mini map to make navigation easier and the computer version tends to crash alot. Expand

Honestly, it's been a while since I've played a game this good. You may be reading about "this game is so glitchy!" or "there are so many bugs!," but honestly, they don't bug me. I run the game on a modest computer at best, playing just barely on medium graphic settings and I really don't have any problems. The only thing that happens is after I go to place after place, or go to an area where I see a vast area of Wasteland, the game slows down and the sound starts poping, but I believe this to be a computer problem as it has to load a heaping amount of things or remember a heaping amount of things, but in those situations all I do is exit the game and come back in and I'm fine. Now to the games details. The game starts out slow as it is just your life growing up in the vault, but once you get into the wasteland, your thrust into an open end game that lets you do whatever you damn please. This allows for limitless game play as you can help or hurt the random people you find. The main storyline could be longer, but with all the side quest and random monsters, it really does not matter after a while. Plus, the humor and irony in the game is pretty amusing. All in all, this is a game I would recommend for anyone and everyone, as long as you have something that can run it. Expand

  1. Minor niggles aside, Fallout 3 is almost entirely spectacular. Everything from the graphics, to the sound, to the plot is first-rate. The VATS system worlds like a charm, and it’s so easy to get the hang of, you’ll be cracking skulls like there’s no tomorrow. [Dec 2008, p.55]
  2. A vast and open world of unimaginable possibilities opens in front of you in Fallout 3. Great story, flawless combat system, and the option to choose your own way makes it a hot candidate for game of the year. [Nov 2008]
  3. Fallout 3 is one of this year's best games. It's an unforgettable journey that lives up to the series. You are an ex-vault 101 inhabitant, and you discover a whole new world, full of zombies, mutants, raiders, aliens and all kinds of creatures. Welcome to this post-apocaliptic reality, where you are going to spend hundreds of hours.
