Great graphics, horrible ai, level design, and character animations... very repetitive. Some absolute genius i.e. fire propagation, mixed in with ridiculous ballistics that make enemies just stand there while being pumped full of lead. Some rag doll physics would be very welcome. Could have been so so so much more, but instead they pull a Sarah Palin out of the hat. Back to COD 4 and now 5. At least those games have the whole package. Expand

I'll give you the awesome graphics, but what game isn't doing that today? The spreading of the fire was pretty cool as well. Other than that; this is one of the worst games I've played in awhile. If I could return it to get my money back I would. You need a better storyline with more involved side quests. The enemy AI was horrible. I didn't even get online or finish the game. After about 6-8hrs I couldn't take any more of the repetition. Expand

You drive for 10 minutes to a place, kill someone under 2 minutes, drive 10 minutes back. Resupply, speak to some npc with bad voice acting, get in a car, and repeat. Do this routine for about 60 times then you've completed the game. EXCELLENT. The most over hyped game of the year, and possibly the worst I've played out of all of them. The best part of the game was in the first few minutes, before you even take control over your character, while you're on a car driven by a guide through the wilderness and villages. It was the time when I thought "oh wow this game seems to be really amazing", and the only time. It's more repetitive than the other overly hyped bad games such as GTA4 and Assassin's Creed, and that's saying alot. Whatever decisions you make don't make any differences, your "buddies" are nothing more than a name on the screen and different model with bad voice "acting". I'm giving it a 3 because there are a few innovative features such as fire propagation and the whole "immersion" idea, the game felt more like a ridiculously long and boring tech demo. Don't even begin to compare this game with Crysis, I rated Crysis 6 for being an intense shooter, amazing graphics, and some form of storyline. This game fails to deliver any of that, which is already the new low for how games should be rated. Jees, last time I completed an fps without having to think "oh god I have to finish it or I'll feel like I've wasted my money" was probably Bioshock and Half life 2 (and not the extended rip off ones). What's happening with the fps game developers these days... If you have to choose between Fallout3, FarCry2 and Stalker:ClearSky, whatever you choose, stay as far away from this piece of moneymaking junk as possible. Expand

Count me among those disappointed in Far Cry 2. My complaints have been stated by others elsewhere. I did wait for a few early reviews before making my decision and most of them were great. What tells me that the early reviewers were either paid off or drooling fanboys is the disparity in the ratings by published reviewers and consumer reviews. Look here on Metacritic and compare ratings. FC2 has an 87 by reviewers, but 6.0 by users. Compare that to other recent and older games: RA3: 84 / 8.0 BiA,HH: 80 / 7.3 Crysis, Warhead: 84 / 8.2 Mass Effect: 89 / 8.1 HL2: 96 / 9.3 CoH: 93 / 8.9 Sure, there will be occassions, like Spore (DRM), where an organized backlash will bring down ratings, but most games public reviews will be within the ballpark of published reviews - given enough time and a larger number of reiews. So, yeah, I bought the hype - but, I think I was sold a "bill of goods" for a product that didn't deliver. Mine is uninstalled and posted on Craigslist at this time. Expand

Why did I buy this game, it wasn't worth the money. You would think they would have improved on Far Cry 1, but no they took a serious jump backwards. Boring, bad graphics, the game has no soul. Whats good about the game? the name is good Whats bad? the fact that they have destroyed an amazing first game reputuation and made such rubbish. Look read the other user comments for everyting that is wrong with the game, because they are all true. I'm too angry to run through all the wrongs and I can't believe I bought the game. The only reason I gave it a 2 rating was because of the 1st game!!! Expand

After spending £30 on this game I tried to get my moneys worth, but no matter what, killing everyone at a checkpoint you have cleared out 3 times before or spending 10 Minutes driving to a mission in a slow and poor handling vechile is just not fun. Playing the game felt more like chore than anything else.

I was following the development of this game with great interest. Ever since Operation Flashpoint, back in 2001, I have been seeking a diverse, open landscape in which to develop tactics and strategies, to think ahead, use one's initiative, exploit the weather, find and use cover; in other words, to have an FPS that is steeped in atmosphere, in a 'sense of place', yet which also has a compelling story. Video trailers of the game in development showed such promise. In part, this game delivers. The first time my heart stopped, listening to the rustling of the leaves as I was about to squeeze the trigger of the sniper rifle, the sensation was electric. I've stopped at a bus stop in order to simply watch the sunrise, which gave the grass and the hills a golden sheen. Stunning. But I've only been playing for a few days, and there may well be a problem around repetition, since having to criss-cross the beautifully-rendered landscape will decrease the charm of the whole thing. At the moment I find it utterly immersive and compelling, and much more satisfying than Crysis, GTA or Mercenaries (there are echoes of each in this game, strangely enough). But the 'feel' of the weapons, the way the crusty old ones not just look but also sound different, and jam up on you, gives a real viscerality to the gunfights - very exciting. Expand

Overall, the game is actually pretty playable, but.. It fails miserably in a few, but important key areas. First one. You cant change fire mode.... I mean, ooh my god. I just dont get it... I mean, in reality, you never, EVER use automatic fire mode on a rifle. The reason why is also apparent in the game. It aims horribly BAD. If you just could switch to single fire, stealth, and long range battles would be a lot more enjoyable. Also the AI is terribly bad. Its stupid not to be able to pick more then one quest at a time. (wtf!?) And finally, the whole "friend" system is completely stupid. They appear sometimes, and sometimes not. And when you meet them in game, you cant ask them to tag along on a mission.. they just sit there.. Or want you to kill stuff. Good game, bad game? If it weren't for these, very "small" flaws, Id say that Its a good game. But, the flaws are there. Laughing you in the face. Expand

Repetition, repetition, repetition. Perhaps one of the most boring games I've played as of late; the AI is horrid: you can kill some dude with a sniper rifle some ~100^99 miles away and his companions still spot you in a matter of milliseconds - through the trees/behind treetrunks. Getting to point B from point A takes ages - because at every intersection (and trust me, there are a lot of intersections), there's a camp full of mindless morons who'll start shooting at you with 99% accuracy, and if that's not enough to stop the car you're in, they'll instantly get inside their own jeeps with that annoying mounted machinegun and follow you to the end of the world, or until you're furious enough to stop your car, wait for them to get around the trees/stones/signs they constantly crash into, and empty an entire mag in their guts before you shut the game down. Hearing the NPC's shout "Argh! The bastard shot me!" after you've emptied an entire mag on them with 5 seconds between every bullet cracks me up though. Expand

This game should have been called FarDrive 2. I've literally spent more time in my vehicle than in the Grand Theft Auto series. There isn't much variety in the cars though, so it gets pretty repetitive fast.

That said, the missions are really enjoyable and there is no shortage of random fun stuff to do.

Disappointed ! 2 for the graphics but otherwise the game is really boring, stupid missions go from A to B (B is always on the other side of the map), you just kill again and again the same guys, you destroy again and again the same enemy cars on the way. Frankly speaking nothing to compare with Far Cry. No doubt that reviewer in magazines have been bribed.

Loved the original Far Cry. This is not Far Cry version 2. It's an interactive game engine demo, not a game. Combat is unrealistic, AI is unrealistic, view of field is odd, you do not feel same scale as the environment, character animation is clunky, story is irrelevant, sounds are weak, weapons unrealistic and weak, controls feel clumsy and jerky with no feel of gravity, repetition, repetition, repetition. Did I say: repetition! I don't even want to finish this game. How can I get my money back from Steam? PC players: STAY AWAY. Expand

Most of the player reviews here spoke directly what I was feeling about this game; promising-but-ultimately-broken gameplay, completely disengaging storyline, insanely horrible enemy AI (replete with head-scratchingly-bad character animations and horrible hit detection), the 'hey man, drive as far south as you can and off some dude' "missions", and the "checkpoints" that are full of animalistic drones that just shoot at you when you come within sight then hop into their vehicles and give chase until you literally stop and murder every last one of them. It surprised me that they used a different engine for this game, because besides having to stop and pop malaria pills for the first half of the game, it felt like I was playing Crysis in Africa (at least Crysis tried to have a storyline). Stunning graphics do not make a game; if the story was even PRESENT in the mind of the player or, say, the character animation was even a little better, I probably would've given this game a 7. The fact is that there are many superior distractions out right now, and that point begs one important question that i'm sure is in the mind of anyone who has played both: while Fallout 3 is fresh on the shelves right now, who would even WANT to give this game the time of day? Wow, I installed this game 2 hours ago, played it one hour , shook my had and checked the web for reviews if this is only me or if the game is really that bad. Now I read all the bad stuff here and I know the story. I had high expectations on this game since Far Cry was BY FAR my favourite FPS I ever played. This game is totally rubbish and I can't believe this is sold really as Far Cry2. Gonna delete it now and never touch it again. I will give it 3 and its just for the graphics, The story did not impress me at all, i felt no mission was challenging enough, there were not enough surprise points just the one at last when buddies fight me.The AI acts stupid at times, they fight like cowards, for instance i had to unlock an underground location and one of the guys was hiding and it was really difficult to find him to unlock the underground location. What i missed in farcry2 that i liked in farcry.. i missed the Binoculars.. i missed the choppers trying to gun me down.. i missed the fighting between the monsters.. i missed those cut scenes.. :-( I am verry sorry to say but i really missed that ACTION which i had experienced in farcry. Right now this game is over-hyped. Scenery is nice and immersive, although the colors are bland and dull. Gameplay is average at best, over-simplified controls makes it a great game for beginners. Voice-acting is painfully bad. Guns are over-simplfied as well. This game could have been a lot better , but there are some outstanding flaws that bring down the score. Wait a few more months before buying it. The price will drop very fast on this over-hyped game. Expand

What can i say except..... BORING! scenery looks nice, but graphically, apart from the fire (which is probably the best looking thing in the game) no better than Crysis or COD4. Story is boring, characters are boring, missions are boring, travel is boring, even the combat is boring and repetitive. after so much wait and anticipation I'm sorry to say i am very disappointed.

Yet another overhyped big budget game given 9's and 10's by reviewers paid to play it for maybe 2 hours at most. This is the first person shooter version of Assassin's Creed in terms of game design: It all takes place in a world, that once again is very nicely designed, with good attention to the small details. Once again though, the gameplay takes the form of inane repetitive missions over and over and over and over and over again, all with nothing to do with the story, and is only designed to take up time. Remove the guns, the instantly respawning enemies, 100 pointless guard points that can target you from 200 feet away, and you have a really nice looking Africa hiking game. As a free roaming shooter though, it decidedly fails. Expand

Alot of repitition. The AI isn't so great. Playing the game on hard just means the enemies respawn more often and it takes less bullets for you to die. Other than that, the depth of the game is great. Just remember to quicksave often or you will get very frustrated as the fights aren't that intuitive. The graphics are amazing as well.

I have been eagally looking forward to getting my hands on Far Cry's sequal only to be bitterly disappointed with its boring gameplay.Although the graphics are superb, the gameplay consists of nothing more than a series of missions with really no point to any of them except to earn diamonds to enable you to upgrade weapons. Most of the action is simply driving or boating from one place to another killing the opposition on the way which becomes so repetitive as to be an absolute bore. I am sure Ubisoft have dumbdowned the gameplay to suit five year olds. I can't wait for Half Life 3 ! Expand

A game that could have been mind-blowingly amazing, instead is dragged down by gameplay pitfalls. In a game that purports to enter you into a realistic world, few things jarr you out of immersion like crashing into invulnerable trees, or pumping four shots into the chest of a generic enemy only to have him shake it off and keep coming. Repetitive missions and a complete lack of dramatic pacing of any kind do nothing to help matters either. Expand

Overall a very good game, a must buy for any First-Person Shooter lovers because of the way it will inevitably either impact the genre or become the first of a new generation of games with much less linear focuses. Unfortunately, the gimmick of this game, "Open world", is its death knell. Checkpoints on all the major intersections, plus frequent road patrols, detract from the fun of the game, and the massive size of the map leads to almost constant boredom when forced to travel to one side of the map and then back again. The missions are varied and very fun, the graphics are very tight and run far smoother than its cousin Crysis, and the AI is comprised of relative genius (taking cover when they hear a sniper rifle, and then jumping to another bit of cover immediately after your next shot). There are also many, many weapons to choose from, and each one feels different in its own respects. Great game, but be warned that it's no Call of Duty 4. This game takes work. Expand

I do not know what goes on in the minds of people who gave this game a positive score. Maybe they are console players and they've never played a decent game in their life. Maybe they have several blood clots in their brain and have lost the power of higher reasoning. Maybe both. This game is terrible. And what's really sad is that it took me only 10 minutes to realize this, without reading all the other negative comments. The visuals are "okay" at best. They are definitely not as immersive as Crysis for example. I'd even go as far as to say Far Cry 1 felt more tropical then Far Cry 2 feels african. Everything looks brown, its' hard to make out where one thing begins and the other ends. Moving around in the game feels like you're drunk, on drugs and have several vital limbs missing. The moral? Don't but a shooter unless it's coming from id, valve or perhaps crytek. The rest don't have a clue how to make a good shooter. Expand

Ugh. Combat is clunky and frustrating, unarmored enemies can take half a rifle clip to the torso and keep fighting, vehicles handle very unrealistically and are far too fragile, the much-touted vast open world just makes travel from place to place tedious and dull, enemies respawn endlessly which is intensely annoying, and almost everyone in the entire world will attempt to kill you on sight for no reason that is ever made clear. It looks good, but not great, and certainly not good enough to mitigate the actual gameplay. All in all a very big disappointment. How it scored so highly in so many reviews is totally beyond me. A terrible game. I don't understand how anyone can think driving a car for 20 minutes is called "Fun". The game is very realistic but that doesn't mean it's fun! We already have something realistic it's called "Real Life" The enemies drops dead when you shoot them but then they come back up later which is really annoying. Like driving a car for a long time isn't annoying enough, you will have enemies chasing you all the time. The only positive i can say about this game is the graphics and the map editor. Those who gives this game a high score must have a really bad taste in game or they have been payed off by Ubisoft to make their game look good. Expand

Guys...I was bought into the hype on this game...please by whatever means do not BUY this game. I couldn't even finish it..i just quit. This has to be the worst console port to PC I have ever witnessed. Just another Ubisoft game like Assassins Creed. The multiplayer...oh goodness...almost in the year 2009 with many great games out and they release a multiplayer like THAT for PC? Guards respawn...you can't lean left or right..you can't prone...cars break down easy...enemies take too many shots to kill...there is almost nothing in the environment that is destructible (just some boards...and on special certain trees you can shoot the branches off of it)...missions are repetitive...I honestly think that compared to what this game was supposed to be the final product deserves a 0. Ala another over hyped BORING game Assassins Creed, it's more of the same, go here.. get a mission.. drive to the other side of the map... past the forever respawning checkpoints, kill a baddie... drive for miles to get another mission... repeat et al. No depth, confusing clumsy game mechanics like the reputation system!! why? Also how come everyone is an enemy? Why are there more ways to save a game than any other game imaginable.. you want check points.. you got 'em.. you want safe house to save in .. you got 'em... oh and you want quick save too???.. ok you got it. This is a terrible game. It joins the hall of shame of hasted console ports along with titles like Bioshock, Oblivion or DeusEx:IW (among many others). Issues are many - from purely technical limitations (inherited from console hardware) to dumbed down gameplay (inherited from consoles' target audience). A short list of some of them: - mouse sens/accel mess - fov problems - oversized consolish menus - crippled controls - no leaning, no proning, no burst/single fire changing - among other things - no sound settings - barely any destructible environment - "big 50km2 world" made into a maze of between-cliffs corridors you could render a cave top instead of the sky, and call it FarCry: Descent Into Undermountain - AI leaving a lot to be desired (on "infamous" level at least) - /absolutely/ everybody hates you ! friendlies ? neutral villages ? maybe with some tasks to do ? forget it ... - everything respawns ! damn quickly at that, so you better be quick while doing missions, if you don't want enemies you just killed shooting at your ass - handholding (average console Joe can't feel lost after all) - weapon carrying capacity limited to 1 per class (instead of weight or some generic cap) - so forget about bringing assault and sniper at the same time - unified ammo per class (DX:IW anyone ?) - once you buy something, unlimited amounts for free await for you ! yay (for console Joe at least) ! - world doesn't change - whatever you do, how many missions you did, for whom - everything remains exactly the same + ridiculous DRM on top of everything That's by no means a complete list. Check out UBI forums for locked threads (mods started big damage control recently). Sorry, but this game is an overhyped (by "major" offline / online magazines) ripoff. And sadly adheres to a "standard" PC games have become over last years. And you know what the most sad and ironic part is ? - omg, Far Cry 2 didn't sell as we expected, it's all pirates' fault ! - but ... we delivered subaverage, overhyped, poor console excuse of a game - isn't that the main issue ? - sacrilege ! It's all because of those filthy thieves I tell you ! Next time we implement DRM requiring fingerprints and retina scans - that will show them ! - ... I can bet my head that in case of such scenario - pirates will be the excuse of everything. I guess it's time to look to indie games for good. Expand

It's a decent game with a lot of great ideas. The graphics, the game engine, the animations in interacting with the world are all top notch. The action itself is also great for the most part. Unfortunately it's one of those games that suffers in other areas enough to drag it down. Perhaps patching can rescue it, or an expansion or the next installment. It's problems:
    - Enemies can take a hail of bullets, even from high caliber weapons, before going down.
    - AI can be great and interesting at times and just down right stupid a lot of the other times
    - The constant re-spawning of check points that makes moving across the map tedious at best.
    - The story does nothing to engage the player, no connection, I feel no desire at all to finish the game.
    - The only real goal in the game is to get the weapons you want. Once you have em and have played with them the game doesn't really offer much else.
    - Rather simplistic weapon controls

    Stuff it did well:
    - Beautiful open world, amazingly well designed
    - Great graphics and engine that runs very smooth
    - Neat AI actions like rescuing a buddy or crawling to cover when injured
    - Good variety of different weapons that fit the environment
    -Great explosions! :D

Far Cry 2 is a let down. Compared to the original Far Cry, it's sequel (?) borrows nothing from it and ends up feeling like a console port. Far Cry was a breakthrough in gaming, and it really did amaze me with it's breathtaking vistas and action - however the developers of FC2 seemed to think that it was the freeform gameplay that really made Far Cry so fun. So they made Far Cry 2 a sandbox game, similar to GTA. I have no idea why, it's such an obviously bad artistic direction, yet they thought it was needed somehow. The result of this simplification of the originals strongpoints results in a massively uncreative game experience. Whereas the first had a story (albeit ridiculous) this one just has a stupid one, and the script is horrible. It's like watching a really ridiculous action movie except without the action and way too much driving from place to place. Rent this game if you must, and buy it at your own risk. Expand

Far Cry 2 is not an utterly worthless game. The Dunia engine gets a 9/10, it's able to create amazing graphics even on a modest computer. The shooting is acceptable, I wish the engine modeled ballistics like Stalker but oh well. The story and overall mission structure is horrible though, for all the reasons people have listed. I think it's obvious now that an open world shooter needs to be more like an RPG and less like GTA. Stalker remains the king of this type of game for now. Expand

The traveling from village to village is repetitive, the a.i. is complicated but not impressive. Stealth is impossible and enemies can spot you from a few 100 meters away because you foot is sticking out from behind a tree. I did spend a good 12 hours in the map editor which has helped bump the score up, i felt truly imersted in the multiplayer game i had in the stage i created. My feelings on this game are mixed. I'm years late on playing Far Cry - just finished it about a month ago. There were flaws in the game, but I found the whole thing entertaining. Based on that - I was really looking forward to Far Cry 2. I was hoping that it would be something interesting along the same type of story line. This is *not* what I was hoping for. For the first little while I felt like I was being drawn into the story - but I was quickly bored with having to drive around, and around and around. I can't use the monocle to see without pulling out the map? Weird. When I approach a checkpoint, why do people automatically start shooting? Why can't I just pass a check point with a bribe or something and be on my way. Overall, I'm not in love with this game. I'm willing to admit that my expectations were out of line with the reality of this game. I'm willing to slug it further to see if I start to like it for what it is - but at this moment, I'm disappointed. I'm giving it a score of 5 on the hope that it will grow on me. Expand

The game is severely over-hyped. I can guarantee that the major reviewers have not had a chance to play the full game and experience the MAJOR pitfalls of the game. This is another example of advertising money going to the review sites. FC2 is graphically and environmentally awesome. I have to say that at least. But the AI is omnipotent, the missions are EXTREMELY repetative. It is so repetative that I don't want to continue playing through the rest of the 10 hours of gameplay. I've played it for 12 hours already. Silenced weapons don't matter, the AI will know after the 2nd shot EXACTLY where you're at. Expand

I have played the original Far Cry, and this game has nothing to do with it, in other words this is not Far Cry 2, its some other game. This game has elements stolen from STALKER (Chase Strelok instead of the Jackal) Except STALKER with a patch that fixes the glitches is a way better and more captivating game, with a far superior AI, and more fun combats. Now after stealing the story from Stalker and removing the fun elements from it, such as leaning, and inventory, Ubisoft tried to add cars to make this game seem like Grand Theft Auto, but miserably failed at that too. You cannot lean behind trees and just peek to look at the enemy. And when you are behind a tree and you shoot just over the edge, the bullets will hit the tree, which means that the precision in this game is pretty bad. I know Ubisoft is ticked off at Crytek for working with EA and creating Crysis. Now if you want to show Crytek that you can make a better game, you should at least adopt the good things Crysis did, and get a decent story (Crysis has great technological achievements, but the game sucked). NOT adopt the bad things from Crysis and make it worse. I want some of my money back, but I doubt that it will happen, maybe I can say it was fraud, due to the fact that they sold me "Bad Version of Grand Theft STALKER Rwanda" and not Far Cry 2, where ever they might be keeping the real game. So much potential ruined by repetitive gameplay. 70% of the game is you driving from point A to point B, through the same checkpoints that seem to respawn guards after 5 minutes. All the missions can pretty much be accomplished the same way: Find a good sniper spot, shoot propane tanks to start a big fire, shoot enemies that don't get burned, then go in and do whatever the mission states. Multiplayer is a complete joke, with a horrible matchmaking system. Single player can not be saved at this point, but if they patch multiplayer, its possible this game could have some lasting value. I doubt this will happen though. Expand

I've never been so disappointed, I hoped that if this game is developed by Ubisoft, it'll be great, but after I've played Assassin's Creed I just felt that something is wrong with Ubi and I was right. Ubi is making really boring games by now. You're still doing the same: for example: kill, kill, kill(quest given by the same person),destroy, destroy, destroy(the same) and if you come to another person the same thing happens again. I don't know what to think about those Ubi's 2 new games, but.. nothing good except graphics is there. I finished both games and I really know what I'm saying, I'm sad 'cos of it:( If I can compare it to anything, it's like you're still playing the same 5seconds long song over and over and over and over again...Kill me if you think it's not truth, but this is IMO the worst disappointment of the year. I was very disappointed. I was really looking forward to this game being so fun and entertaining that I would play it over and over like the original. But it was really boring and tedious. Running long distances becomes so boring you want to stop playing. I kept telling myself it would get better but it was just more of the same. Non stop missions which for some reason you can only take 1 at a time? Seriously WTF? You have to go all the way across the map for each one and passing threw the same check points where enemies respawn constantly. If you go the wrong way and turn around, boom, they are back. It gets old killing the same guys at the same spot over and over just to have to drive threw that spot 5 minutes later. It seemed as if there was no progression in the game because of this. You never really feel like your getting anywhere because you are fighting in the same spots only looking for a different person or box. The graphics are bad ass don Expand

This game is dishonest in what it presents, you see, during release it seemed as though you were going to be pitted in a sweet African civil war; instead it's story is feature-less, dialogue terrible, and fire physics an out right lie; it thinks it's being gritty and real by having you hunt diamonds with a magic hand held diamond finding gps. My advice avoid this game. It gets a zero because it was a waste of money. Expand

The game didn't deliver what the publishers promised, mainly "Destructible Environment". It advertises with "Everything that should be destroyable, is.", but the only things you can destroy is ammo-piles and propane tanks. The gameplay is so repetitive, you feel like you are playing the same mission over and over, only in different locations. The game is pretty however, and the sounds are very nice. Good game overall but a little repetitive. For example when you're driving around you are often ambushed. Fair enough but each time it seems to be by the same two idiots. This results in hundreds of identical gunfights. When the badguys are taken out your vehicle will need fixing but fixing cars in FC2 is the most annoying feature in any game ever. However if you overlook these (and other) flaws it is a decent game but I thinh tere are better games around right now. Expand

Disappointing, repeating what others have said: "Does not deserve to be in the Farcry franchise" In this day and age I would assume we have the technology to have semi-realistic bullet physics and precise hitboxes. This game makes joke out of "realistic" gunfire, hitboxes are glitchy and not accurate, the recoil is generic, and the interface is a poor console port. Maybe I should have looked harder at the Ubisoft logo and avoided the game. Expand

Great FPS. Great graphics. Fire is awesome. Some fun missions, a lot are repetitive. I have never played Far Cry before this one (except the Wii version haha... which sucked) and maybe that's why this review is not as biased as others are. Also, my computer can run it, another reason why I'm not complaining. Generally enjoyable, but it doesn't live up to its potential. The setting is just marvelous - the entire concept of being a profiteer in one of Africa's dirty little wars amuses me to no end, although this may mean that I'm a bad person. Oh well. The biggest issue, though, is that this wonderful setting is nearly unoccupied. Throughout the game, you see maybe fifteen friendly faces - everybody else will attack you on sight, no matter how suicidal it may be. It's a bit of a blow to the immersion when a guy in an old sedan decides to ram my 50-cal armed technical. Several of the buddies are interesting, but you never really get to know them. The side missions are all nearly identical. There are a handful of interesting faction missions, but most of them are just search-and-destroy in various locations. The malaria mechanic, though unrealistic, could have been great if it actually became harder to obtain medicine as your reputation increased, but in practice the only difference is that your quest-giver will admonish you for being such an awful person before sending you on the same mission you've been doing all game long. I'd suggest waiting until it gets cheaper - it's worth playing, just not worth the asking price. I am looking forward to seeing what modders can do with this engine, though. Expand

Who are these boneheads that think this game is good! Are they drugged up mental patients with various blood clots in their BRAIN for god's sake DON'T buy this game. First of all the one good point is that the graphics are good thats why it just manages to get a 2. First of all it is really really repetitive all u do is drive from A to B in ur car that always breaks down and then u kill some guy and do it all over again. The enemies are as hard to defeat as macho fat boys ( they are big mutants on farcry 1 which are really hard to defeat) u have to shoot them seemingly 1000000 times before they die the enemies r SO annoying because apart from respawning every 5 minutes (are they zombies?) the two teams of people the APR and the UFLL never shoot each other despite being arch enemies they only shoot u! The multiplayer is rubbish it always stops working and sais that i have been disconnected from the farcry server WHAT!!!! and it has a rubbish weapon system i mean for the assault class u basically get to choose between an AK47 and a G3 its absolutely rubbish. i completed the game in 2 days which isn't long enough for a game which has no replay value or decent multiplayer I looked forward to this game for a year and i was really disappointed don't aste ur money buy call of duty 4 or battlefield bad company which is 99% destructible farcry is 2% destructible I'm guessing seening as the only thing u can blow up are propane tanks and ammo piless this is such a bad game it is as hyped up by the producer and the biest reviewers who get BRIBED to say its good please dont buy this if u value ur money all in all its a rubbish game not even worth the case its packaged in and If anyone has a ps3 my username is ouchobrain72 im always open to friend invites and thats it. remember DON'T BUY!!!!!!!! Boring. Mindless. Repetition. Good for people low on IQ points and high on pot, this game is nothing but a series of 'go to point A, kill randomly generated generic looking soldiers, killing another bunch of randomly generated solders on the way'. Rinse and Repeat. Enemies respawn every few minutes, and take ages to die. Most of the game is spent driving and walking and since you can't take more than one mission at a time, spending a half hour going from one end of the map to another to complete a minor objective while killing the SAME enemies I killed 5 minutes ago makes me want to stab myself with an icepick just to make sure my brain still works. I was especially turned off by the graphics, while the original far cry had lush green visuals this game looks like they took that and applied a drab sepia filter to the entire thing, making it all seem like a shade of the same color. The reviewers have obviously been bribed. Ubisoft Montreal disappoints once again. DO NOT BUY Expand

This game fails to deliver on almost every level, so please if you have any sense disregard the rave reviews and read the reviews here fully. To address some of the key points that these "honest" reviews have made. 1 - The graphics are sub-par for this generation of computing. Nobody expects Crysis like effects in every game, but running on all ultra settings all I can say is "meh". Textures are low resolution, vegetation is unrealistic, and the colour is very drab and washed out. Character animations are so-so. Reeks of "this was meant for an XBOX360". 2 - This game is not realistic. Since when can you throw a vehicle into reverse immediately without stopping and clutching. Where did all the africans go (almost every bad guy is white and english-speaking). Why are there only 5 different types of enemy soldier costumes? Why are all the enemy guns in very poor condition? Do these elite mercenary tough-guys you encounter continuously not know how to maintain their equipment? All I see are weapons which seem to become jam-prone and rotten the second you lay your hands on them. Also, seeing as how the protagonist suffers heavily from malaria, you would think that jamming pliers into bullet holes and ripping the bullets out, or lighting matches and pushing them in the aforementioned bullet holes would possibly result in serious consequences given the harsh environment and poor medical fsacilities. Lets not forget the fact that you can barely sprint for 6 seconds before you basically collapse, blurry eyed. 3 - This game is stressful to play, not fun. Respawning should be left to games that know how to use it, I'm talking about Call of Duty, MMORPGs etc. Clearing a camp or safehouse and finding it immediately repopulated within 5 minutes gets boring (very) fast. As does the fact that you're everyone's worst enemy and they all like to throw jeeps at you every 1/2 half mile you travel. In closing, do not trust the reviews. If you have a great PC, play Crysis or WARHEAD again. You will enjoy it much more. I'm glad I borrowed this from my friend and didn't buy it (he only lasted 4 hours of gameplay before uninstalling also). Expand

I think the game is fun although I can't really play it for extended periods of time. If checkpoint enemies respawned after, say half a game day or so, that would be fine. The story missions are boring if you don't do the alternate buddy mission. My biggest complaint is that none of the main missions so far help you find The Jackal. The game is flawed, not bad. Slap a big patch on there and it could be exponentially better. I give it a 7/10 because of repetitive, yet entertaining missions. The fire is interesting, and the world is beautiful. Naturally you can read most player reviews and see that you either love it or hate it. It isn't that the game is bad, or that the reviewer is bad, it's that some people will like it and some won't. This game unlike many has a clear dividing line. So I'm not saying it's great, or that it's terrible. I'm just saying maybe rent it before you spend 50-60 bucks on it. Expand

The trouble with this game is, it has so much potential, and fails to achieve it. It gives you choices over which missions to do, and choices about how to do each mission, but the trouble is, these choices do not affect anything at all except for how far you have to drive (and in this game, there's a hell of a lot of driving to and from missions, which gets pretty dull). The first-person shooter aspect of the game isn't done all that well, as people have mentioned, enemies tend to soak up bullets, and whilst OK, the AI isn't anything special. You have to get guns from weapon shops, since enemy guns jam, which is tedious, as it involves MORE driving. The driving wouldn't be so bad if you weren't constantly being shot at by guards at guard-posts you had already captured. There is no motivation to progress in the game. You have the choice to do missions for "buddies", in return for which you get nothing, or the main story missions, which generally involve killing someone, or destroying something, because a psychopathic African warlord wants you to. In return, you get diamonds with which you can buy guns which you can use to do this more efficiently. If the missions were more consequential, if doing things for your buddies actually DID something, if there was less tedious driving, and if the combat was varied even just a LITTLE bit, this would be a good game. Sadly, none of this is the case - the game tries to do many things and does none of them well. Expand

Terrible, repetitive gameplay. The AI is absolutely moronic, they go from shooting you through trees at 2k's away to standing next to you doing nothing. Absolutely everybody shoots at you the moment they spot you (even guards at checkpoints when you drive up to them). The missions get repetitive and all the driving you have to do is made worse by the aforementioned checkpoints. The graphics are OK I guess but the AI really lets this game down hard. Graphics are good, sometimes bad. There are lots of weapons, which have no stopping/killing power. Most of them are too much alike. AI is stupid. If one person sees you even for 0.01s before he dies, everyone knows where you are. Stealth is practically impossible. Enemies can sometimes see you through walls. Fire is nice, although it doesn't really burn anything except grass and trees. Other stuff just becomes black/darker. It also doesn't spread enough and enemies are stupid and run into it. There are lots of bugs. Enemies under ground shooting you etc. Most of the missions are like this: You get a mission, your "buddy" calls you, if you accept, you get extra job, then do the original one, then save your "buddy" who has somehow got into trouble and then you are finished. All characters other than buddies are your enemies and shoot you. Even if you work for them. The more you play it, the less sense the story makes. You don't really have any freedom. Do a mission or do extra mission for bonus stuff. Ok.. I got bored of listing bad things. I can't really remember any good things other than ok graphics. Expand

This game starts out strong, you really think its all that for at least an hour or two(or at least I did). Then reality kicks in and declares war on denial. Denial struggles briefly before being overwhelmed by realitys awesome facts. In their(ubisoft montreal) attempt to make a game thats non-linear with freedom to go where you want etc, they got the open world map bit right at least. But after the n-teenth time you have to consume an outpost in a glorious sexplosion of fire and bullets, just to get to the corner store 50 metres down the road in your JeepTM(shudder) you start to wonder why they bothered. You cant move without something shooting at you, as the AI is retarded in the way only a enraged animal could compare, attacking with no reason or motive other than, I can see you, die. Actuallly they dont even need to see you, or have line of site to know where you are, wow! So for all the fantastic scenery in the 50km/2 area you have to explore, its kinda like not seeing the forest for the trees, or in this case the ALWAYS aggressive npcs. This is a shame beyond measure, when placed in comparison to competing titles like fallout3, a world filled with detail and lore that gives more immersion then even the very best graphics can make up for. Theres nothing worth exploring in farcry 2, cause theres nothing to find, its just a dead landscape that provides nothing more then obstacle you have to traverse to get to you next killing field(missions), peppered with npcs you have to kill on the way. Over the course of playing, you will either be given or earn access to this conjealed mess of game devices that offer no real differentiation from one another. Oh, bar the self propagating yet self extinguishing fire. What point is there to getting an upgraded hunting/sniper rifle if the one you already have will kill in a single shot and is fantasticly accurate? And the faux rpg elements of providing stats for weapons, that have no real bearing on the actual performance of said firearm. Pistols more accurate then assualt rifles? Yep sure thing. If you love shooters and care not for depth or feeling, then this title is probably for you. But if it takes more then pretty explosions and mindless killing to keep you interested steer clear of this one. Expand

The graphics are great. I live in south Africa and the similarities in enviroments between real life and the game are awesome, except for the fact that you go from jungle to savannah to desert in 10 km. I would have loved for some really open flat plains to speed around in a FAST car, not like the ones in the game. The AI is sometimes buggy but immersive. I love getting stealthy and hearing the guys freak out, in afrikaans and ahosa and whatever, planning their moves audibly queing me to come out of hiding. Sometimes I even feel sorry for the guys. Fire and explosives are fun but sniping doesn't work so well. Also, how the flip can i poke a bullethole open right through my arm with my finger and the next moment the hole is gone? wtf. It's interesting though to see the world react ot your rising reputation level though. I play games for good storylines, and this ones SUCKS. The dialouge is rushed and bland, and you dont; get much choice in missions. I hate doing something that i know frikking the moment I get the mission I will be assasinated afterwards or everything will turn against me. Only part I enjoyed was killing the one person in the game I hate the most, only to find that that also lead to the situation getting more pear shaped. Buddy missions are made moral by the addition of invisible children. "There are soldiers near border, on other side of border is children, I wont let that happen" (from an old russian dude who has no objection to destabilizing a country by ruining it's food supply). Ugh. My second best buddy is my only true freind. I think Jack Carver is the Jackal..both have the same wannabe-badass tone of voice. Guard posts respawn too fast, I mean, how many people are there in a 50km radius of a war sodden country? Overall a great engine with a great concept but a story lacking in various areas, and immersion that gets emotionally and physically exhausting. Expand

Really good game. All the amazing graphics, really nice and challenging shootouts, many different weapons, the biggest world ever seen in a FPS, all the nice details (animals, waterfalls, really nice i'm-in-the-game-features like healing or repairing and many more examples) and the dynamic fire are truly able to apologize for all the marginal-problems like long routes (not as bad as mentioned before, you get enough time to admire the landscape ;-) ), one-minute-respawns and repetetive missions, allthough these deficits had to be regarded in my rating.
All in all I recomend this game to everyone loving non-linear FPS-games mit many little innovations.
To ad a non-rating affected detail, the map editor coming with the game is a very powerful and easy-to-use instrument, worthy of Crytek's first sandbox.

As a big far cry and crysis fan, i was excited to play this game, however, i held off for a while on a count of bad reviews of problems like enemies respawing and lifeless environments. I bought the game yesterday off steam on sale, and i just want to say im glad i got this game for $15 instead of $30. As many have said, the worst parts are true. Repetitive missions that consist of endless travel followed by mediocre gun fights and then more travel, just to do practically the same mission again. stopping every minute to get out of your car and gun down enemies at a random checkpoint, just so they don't relentlessly pursue you and turn your car into a fireball. Weapons jam every other shot and make it a pain in firefights. The environment itself is vast and colorful yes, but lacks a sense of life. the only citizens you'll see in the game pre beggining cut scene are held up in little shacks awaiting passports delivered by you for some malaria medication. endless generic mercenaries that automatically think you're evil and will hunt you down. as for the"civil war," the only fighting you'll see that isn't you vs. a thousand mercs, are your occasional buddies you'll meet that help you out in missions, but actually just require more driving for completion of said mission. but what dissapoints me the most is just the lack story immersion and other game play elements. I wanted to fell like the guy i just killed would actually have an impact or do something, but everything is just so linear and generic. The graphics are very good. i particularly like the lighting and shadow effects, they are nothing revolutionary however. but no matter how good the visuals, good graphics cant cover up bad gameplay. It's a shame to see many pc games becoming bad console ports nowadays, but most developers dont care about the fans anymore, they just want to make the most money. Play far cry 2 at your own risk. This game is absolutely horrible. At first I said, oh maybe it's just the beginning and it will pickup, due the lack of excitement and that I am forced to constantly drivie around a world that seems to be the size of the entire continent of africa in an extremely slow pickup truck, or a medium speed buggy which blows up after 2 or 3 bumps. If you go through a checkpoint, just plow on through, the only thing you will get is frustration when you drive back through it again and realize all the guards have respawned. The guns in this game are ridiculously underpowered, I takes 2 hits to the face on any enemy to kill them, and no I'm not kidding. If you do die, and believe me, you will, you don't go back to a save point, you have to sit and watch as some random guy drags your body around for a while, and shoots at the "bad guys", and then you can somehow get up, inject yourself with some needle and you magically get back up to full health. The problem is that it gets so annoying watching the scene with him dragging you around, and it just makes you want to smash your keyboard. I didn't quit here though, it's when I decided to go paragliding off a mountain, and landed in a river. The problem with this is, the river has no way out but to swim to one end or the other, and there were no boats anywhere in site, and the guy just swims so dang slow. I swam for about 20 minutes before I just got frustrated and uninstalled the game. Expand

Horrid waste of money. I pre-ordered over Steam 2 months early, hoping that this would be worth a wait. It wasn't, not only did i have to wait 2 days after release for the download to finish, when I started, the game crashed, and this is a new computer. Wanting to give it a try in hopes that it has half the fun of the original Far Cry, I borrow someones computer and wait 2 days for the download. The first 2 hours was decent, cinematic wise. After that everything is garbage; gameplay, AI and story. The gameplay is a repetitive notion of go to objective x and do y. There is no realism what so ever, it takes 2 shots to the head to kill anyone unless you are running around with a Barrett. The guns "rust", in a matter of minutes and constantly jam. Even the Springfield bolt-action rifle jams, colt .45 jams, and the first model fired 5000 rounds without incident, here an improved model jams after 2 mags. How the player "heals" themselves is seriously goofy, if only it were as easy as using a Gerber to pull bullets out of a wound. the AI is seriously flawed. There is little programing, all coded is the lines regarding how to interact with vehicles, an aim-bot and an objective to go strait towards the target. More than once Ive taken a dune buggy up a rocky outcropping, only to be followed by a single AI in a 2.5 ton truck who flips his vehicle. The AI has but one objective, follow and try to kill you. For gameplay, I expected destroyable buildings, all they have here is the breakable awning. This trainwreck is generously overrated by everyone, the critic scores are ROFL wrong. Someone must be playing SNES to say FC2 has any substance. This was a waste of money, better off going back to FC, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., CoD or HL2. Expand

I was excitied to get this game, got it about 2 days after it was released, decided to go with the PC version over my PS3. Either way, it wouldn't have mattered... this is garbage. FC2 gets 1 point for its editor. If I actually liked the game or could stand the multiplayer, it would be a great feature. Its easy and rather extensive. Its final point goes to its graphics, which are good, but not great. Shading and vegetation are done well. But the people kind of look comical at any distance farther than 10 feet (I have settings maxed out, i just dont have antialising turned on because im using my tv, helps a little, its not my computer). Buildings are ok. The fire effect of burning grass and what not was a good idea, but not everything burns. Now to the game. The guns jam continously, not to mention a lack of actual variety in what you can choose. Sounds are odd to say the least. AI is horrid. They can see you from 2 miles away with ease, even tho you cant see out from the bush your in. Alert one guy who you killed silently in a building, and the whole area comes after you. Every mission is drive from point A, to point B which is always on the other side of the map... Plus, there whole go anywhere do whatever is a lie, you cant go anywhere, you can pretty much go straight in 10 mile area until the rest of the map is unlocked or open, whatever you like to call it (little exaggeration, but its still close, which is pathetic). While driving across the map, going as slow as possible in any veichle you get (your car says 60mph, theres no difference between 20 and 60... rediculous), enemies will continuously attack you, both sides, for just being alive! Isn't that fun! And once you leave out of there site... BOOM! There back. Its actual funny, because so much time is wasted trying to fight. If you just drive past, minding your own business, two or 3 will hop in a car and come after you. That car will respawn soon enough too, no worries. You can try walking around to get to your objective to not alert people, good luck. It'll probably take you 4 hours, while still alerting everybody known to exsistance within the game. Conclusion... While there seemed to be ideas there, nothing was done to actually capitalize on them, nor follow through and make sure this was at all enjoyable or well done. AI is reminisant to the days of pathetic AI earlier this decade. Half Life 1 had better. That was released in 98 I believe. 10 years later FC2 couldn't create better or equal AI? Sad... Multiplayer is just not fun. You can scan (withouth zooming in) back and forth until a name tag appears in a bunch of foliage and you've found a guy. rediculous. Gun choices in Multi are slim, diamond system is just odd. Stay away... far far away from this. There are better games out there, even the newly released $20 ones, I'm sure can kick the crap out of this. How in the right mind did so many "critics" give this game such high scores, I'll never know. But these days, it just seems like more and more games that aren't good keep getting high reviews. Let the conspiracy theories continue. Expand

This is probably the worst sequel in history, there is only 1 good thing to say about it and that is the game's engine but everything else is flawed, annoying and repetitive.

Why they went and ruined a good franchise like Far Cry with this manure is astonishing and almost as shocking as the high scores it's gotten from review sites.

I'm going to start like this: To the guy that complained about how it crashed; computers are complicated business. Crashes are rare normally, and if you had an issue with them, consult the Steam support team. Also, if it took 2 hours to download, that's your problem only. If you have that slow a connection, don't pin that on the game, and don't buy games from Steam.
    On
    to a review :)
Far Cry 2 is a complicated game. Hard to get the most out of, but if you do, you're in for a treat. The gameplay is essentially like that of any other FPS, but tweaked towards realism.
The immersive aspect is executed brilliantly, except for the very few graphical glitches to be seen about 2 - 4 times in a play through. Most of the time though, it's something that you see and think "Oh, that's wierd. Oh, wait. It's gone."
Graphically, the game is impeccable. The environment interacts with all of the tiny little models and everything you can see. Trees blow realistically in the wind, and fires will soon see them nothing short of a black stump with branches.
Vehicles are nicely implemented. Helping you get from A to B with minimal effort. Just watch out for guard posts. While most people complain about the guard posts, I like them. I'm a fan of tactical gameplay. Which is something you'll have to learn to be able to properly enjoy FC2. Anyone used to running and gunning may want to stick to playing online.
The scope of the world is amazing. Every little detail is beautifully rendered thanks to the technical mastery behind the Dunia engine. Anyone that doesn't like this game is probably just not a fan of the style of play. The game itself is impeccable. If you're a fan of tactical gamplay, mixed with realism and immersion, buy it. If you're looking for just another shooter, go back to CoD4.
    I'm giving it an 8/10.
    It'd get a 10 if it had Co-op. :(
Oh, you might want to invest in a computer with at least 1.5GB of RAM and a9600GT or better :)

This game is "ok," but that's really it. It's a good experience and it's fun, but the game gets repetitive and it's short. you pretty much drive back and forth and shoot people in between. Voice acting is blah most of the people are mumbling and i have decent speakers. Eye candy is great, but that seems like the only thing that really makes want to play more. It's fun to shoot guerrillas, but it's repetitive. They just made you drive across the map so the game takes longer to beat. I would try this first or look at game play videos on you tube or something, but most likely you'll either hate it or be neutral on it. Expand

Killed of a legend! It isn't Farcry in any detail., it is ONLY marketing and advertsiment on the Farcry name. Almost everything on this game is weird, weak, confuse, repetitive and.boring. Looks like an "unfinished" game. You loose hours inside the vehicles going from a side to other and so, geting back in the same place various times. No action, no strategy, no infiltration, no surprise attacks, in few words, NO FUN! There aren't meele attack, no prone, no zoom for sniper and lack of many other commands/otipons which are necessary in the fps nowadays. Also, you don't get to see/find some enemies in sometimes. You get shooting in you but you don't get to know from where are coming the shoots. Gameplay and AI are horrible in all. Ok, there are some few cool things such as the landscape and fire. The graphics are good and the game run very smooth but the filed of view is restricted. I didn't get motived to keep playing the game, that was annoying to try arrive in the chapter two. Waste of time and money. I am totally dissapointed since they have used the name Farcry for it. Ripp-offs! Expand

I would have to agree with some of the repetivness but the gameplay is solid and the story makes sense the Ai is just as bad as Crysis but a little better (probably because crytek made it). i would have to note that ubisoft isnt that good at AI either (anyone play Red Steel for Wii?) the maps are expansive and fun to explore. the game is really lacking in some variety though it needs more vehicles and possibly more factions it would be awesome to be in a 5-way war with diffrent types of people on each side. i give it some extra kudos for being easy to crack as well. definiteley not worth $50. overall jaw-dropping graphics and fun freepplay make this game a solid 7. oh yes and they remembered the AS-50 XD. Far Cry 2 is a beautiful, but mediocre game. The comparisons to Assassin's Creed are appropriate in that there is an amazing world for you to get bored in quickly. The respawning checkpoints and long travel times make the game feel so repetitive. With Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead being released at around the same time you could get a lot more for your money. Pick this up when it's $15-20.

Caught between two rival factions that involve no Trigens or genetically mutated guards, you are sent to seek out the typical facade of usual mindless objects in a shroud of agitating redundancy. It would have been more interesting if they inculded pourly translated subtitals, and 8 bit sound effects. Then the AI could of at least followed the retro theme. However, if you have a higher end PC, they did a good job on shading/lighting effects, which makes if briefly bareable. Expand

The level design is impeccably bad. 50km by 50km and they designed missions to be on the other side of the map with no active save system. Good job. I give it a five because the game is beautiful, the story is nicely written, and the game features extra animations that can only mean that the creators fell in love with their game and wanted to make it that much better. From sub-par AI, to bad voice acting, to repetitive gameplay, to boring and cliched characters, to a storyline that seems about as unimaginative as Gears of War meets pseudo-realism, to DRM that actually punishes people for buying the game legally, and to add insult to injury, it's about as open-ended and immersive as DOOM 3...I mostly play RPGs...now I know why...please, please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and buy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. It is difficult to understand how this game could ever have been conceived of as a sequel to Far Cry. The location, characters, weapons, vehicles, and enemies are all different to the original. The style of game is different, so is the upgrade system and the map system. Even the graphics engine and music is different. It would seem that Ubisoft has exploited the name to sell a game that on closer inspection appears to be a pale imitation of Grand Theft Auto set in Africa. The original Far Cry was a brilliant game. The graphics were superb, the enemy AI challenging and realistic, and the levels were well conceived. Far Cry 2 fails to live up to its predecessor, though some of its graphics occasionally are on par, which is sad given that the original came out nearly 5 years ago. It is a boring, repetitive game that tries to make up for its deficiencies by endless amounts of mindless violence. The battles are the worst I Expand

I've been a fan of Far Cry since its inception. The open-ended play of the original was unique (still is) and addicting. I liked the island themes; the 1st-to-3rd person ability; the humor; the story; the game play; the maps; ability to carry all weapons; the absence of malaria or any annoying illness (what's with that?); the color and terrain (greens and blues instead of brown everything); the ability to immerse one's self in the varied surroundings versus always being in a claustrophobic jungle or on monotonous roads. And talk about boring! What exactly is compelling about driving in Africa? That's what you do most of the time. Did the programmers think the tropical islands were just too pretty so they put us in one of the ugliest places on Earth? Was the original humor too campy so they made this game dreadfully serious? The one and only thing that reminded me of the original was the fact that I could only run about 10 yards before getting worn out (crappy) but at least the original didn't blur my vision each time. What a let-down after waiting for five years. Expand

The dynamic fire and amazing graphics are the first thing you will notice about this game, and they are just great. However, I found this game a huge let down; the missions quickly become repetitive (its all just go here, kill this guy, come back), having to clear out EVERY guard post you come across also gets repetitive quickly, and after a while you will just get a bit sick of how nothing new ever comes along. Also, the AI is just awful: they'll either see you from miles away, or shoot you while looking in the opposite direction, somehow. I give Far Cry 2 a 4 for the fire and graphics, but i wouldn't really bother with this game if i were you. Expand

Far Cry 2 is not a bad game. But it's far from a great one. I am not going to re-hash any of the short falls within this game, since many people have already stated such facts. What disturbs me even more is the fact a lot of (so-called) professional publications and reviewers gave Far Cry 2 such a high rating. Since were on the verge of global recession and media conglomerates face an inevitable downturn of ad revenues on a periodic basis, I wouldn't be surprised if these butt kissing reviewers we're simply adhering to UBIsoft's wishes, especially since they purchase Prime ad space within their publications and web pages. Was a let down. The major issue with this game for me was 1) the quick respawn, 2) hit-detection, 3) mission manager, and 4) storyline. As mentioned previously, the quick respawns made it difficult and frustrating to move from A to B and back to A since most missions made you move to the other end of the map. Enemies took a lot of bullets to finish off and firing in short bursts, for some reasons, didn't seem to count as a 'hit' with the game. Firing longer bursts resulted in excessive recoil. Some have mentioned that 'you' could take a lot of hits before going down so why shouldn't the enemy, but it's because it's 'you' vs the whole Africa that's why FPS are normally easier on the player. Otherwise it should go the way of ArmA, 2 hits and you're dead. Jumping was an issue because you seemed to stick or get repelled by objects too easily. Plot was not well done to overcome keep the player engaged and cover the point that the frequent respawns really made you feel that no progress was actually made. Expand

Im giving it a 6 because i have to acknowledge the fact that they were trying something new... but this is seriously one of the biggest let downs ive played in a while. Online play is even worse. This game was so over hyped that if someone gives it a one i can understand, but i do have to say the fire and explosions were nice :) The AI was easily confused and why advertise destructable buildings and environments if a 4x4 post, with a couple pieces of rusty sheet metal nailed onto it, can stop my truck dead in its tracks if i decided to try to drive through the check point at the intersection i just cleared out not 5 minutes ago? The story was BAD there is no other way to describe the plot other than plain ol' BAD!!!! I know that it was supposed to be a sand box game but the missions were so plain and boring it was hard to keep playing it. When you finally get through all of that, the ending to me was just as disappointing as the rest of the game. pretty much everything else has been covered already like the bullet damage and the hit detection but the multiplayer is seriously one of the worst which is too bad because it had a lot of potential. The thing I liked BEST about Far Cry 2 was that there are a number of really cool unique locations. Each village, mine, brewery, etc was individually designed giving them a less generic feel. I found that sticking to the story missions led to the same assassinate/destroy missions BUT took me to cool locations like the Fort, Brewery, Scrap Yard, Mine, Desert Oasis, Fishing Village and more, each with a different feel. I did avoid side missions like the weapons guy and buddy missions because they were the same old but without the interesting locations, rather forcing you to traipse around the countryside. Buddy missions in particular felt like irritating strap-ons to the main mission, basically "finish the story mission then come save my ass". No thank you. My play style was to sneak about and snipe then wait for the enemy to come to me - if you enjoy skulking and sniping then you may well have some fun with this game. I also tended to largely avoid the roadblocks by using buses to insta-travel as well as using the map to go cross country via shortcuts that seem to be built into the game for that purpose. As an aside it should be noted that the actual plot is spectacularly retarded and if I had more of a choice I would have chosen to attack both the APR and UFLL. Overall for me the game was good but not great and had the potential to do a lot more. Expand

Be warned. This isn't Far Cry per se. Far Cry was by Crytek and for that matter Crysis would be the "next Far Cry". But the point is that Far Cry 2 is a good game. Sure, everybody in the world outside the "capital" will shoot you on sight. The enemy will respawn to checkpoints no matter what, but it's ok. Wouldn't leave something like that be in the real world either. If you don't want to fight with everybody, don't use the roads. You have the freedom to go almost anywhere you want. I myself liked to move at night and scout the checkpoints from a distance. Also the rivers will be pretty easy to travel. Guns will jam and even break, but that's why you can buy your own weapons and your cases for those. That way you can have a new (and even different) weapon available in every safehouse you've unlocked. If you're looking for relatives of Far Cry, this game isn't for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking a way to see Africa like in no other game, and having fun, I'd say you're good to go. Sure, the missions aren't anything but "kill this or that target", but the Africa itself is so beautiful when the sun is setting and you start to move throuhg the savanna to find your prey. Expand

First of all, as far as how beautiful Far Cry 2 is... This game by Crytek has worse graphics than their previous game Crysis. The main campaign is bland and repetetive and feels like more a chore than an immersive or intense FPS experience. It seems like all it involves is driving around, dealing with annoying checkpoints that respawn full of guys 10 minutes after you clean them out, fighting your way into a stronghold, killing some guy, and repeating over and over again. This could be fun enough, but the gameplay mechanics are not enjoyable. The AI can see you through trees and the exclusion of the ability to lean makes firefights a chore in an otherwise semi-realism based FPS. The map/binocular interface is poorly planned, as your map covers up your line of sight but must be up in order to use the telescope thing. It makes scouting locations a hassle. I didn't even bother with multiplayer. Expand

This is easily the worst PC game made in recent history. The game has nothing to do with Farcry, and is completely different in almost every respect. The game is plagued with extremely boring missions, and most of your time will be spent driving or taking the bus. Seriously, if you want to play this game, be prepared to spend a couple hours going back and forth across the map. In short, it's a very boring game with very little to offer. I'm extremely disappointed in FC2. While the graphics are phenomenal and the lighting is superb, they still aren't as good as Crysis, so don't spend your money purely because it looks cool. Gameplay is awful. The map is huge, but you have to drive (or walk) everywhere you go, which takes a long time, not to mention that everyone you meet is hostile, even the civilians driving cars will get out to shoot at you. On your way to wherever it is you have to go you will run into 3 or 4 "guard posts" where 5 or 6 guys will shoot at you and get in their jeeps to follow you. Every time you want to go somewhere, be it for a mission or just for fun, you will run into this. The missions are incredibly repetitive and generally consist of "go here, blow this up/kill this guy , leave" But whatever you have to blow up/kill is generally guarded by 20 or 30 men. The trailers might lead you to believe that you can avoid these guys with stealth, but that isn't remotely true. Once you kill one person, even with a suppressed weapon, the entire camp knows exactly where you are and opens fire on you. Even through walls. This is around the point where your gun decides to jam or you get really sick with malaria (I forgot to mention, you get these malaria attacks throughout the game where your screen goes greenish and you have to take pills) which makes it very difficult to fight back. The game has a "buddy" system where you have friends that can help you out. Unfortunately buddy AI is somewhere between brain dead and retarded so they often get themselves critically injured. When your buddy is critically injured you have to either sacrifice a syrette (a syringe with magical healing potion) or shoot them (they never come back) which gets incredibly annoying, especially when you've used all your syrettes to heal after you were shot while unjamming your weapon. If you would like to fight during the night rather than the day you have to go out and find a "safe house" where you can sleep, which gets obnoxious when trying to plan a raid. And even though the gameplay is awful, maybe it would be worth it if the story was amazing, there is no story (well, there is, but it's really thin) the idea is you're in a country with 2 warring factions and they give you missions so you can get diamonds ($) so you can buy guns so you can do more missions. There's also this guys called the jackal who leaves tapes around so you can hear how sick and twisted he is, you're on a mission throughout the game to kill this guy and I figure at the end of the game you get to kill him, but I doubt I'll ever finish it because it's miserable to play. More importantly, it has nowhere near as many bugs as something like "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl," a title that bears many similarities. Add to the roughly 25 hour single-player campaign a remarkably easy-to-use map creation tool and a full multiplayer suite, and you've got one of the most complete overall gaming packages of the year, as well as one of the most ambitious.
