PROS: Beautiful, immersive environment. Creative health system. Lots of guns (if you work for them). CONS: Terrible AI. Way too much driving. Multiplayer not fun at all. Story is non-existent. 16:10 widescreen is just cropped 4:3. SUMMARY: I'm very dissapointed with this game. Pass on it and pick up a different one until this is in the bargain bin.

Brilliant marketing, horrible lie. This game is FC2 in name only, should have called it simply, Africa, or better yet GTA: Africa, this felt like a GTA game without the fun. Yes the graphics are lovely, which gets it 2 points, but everything else is lacking. This was definately overhyped and I will be wary to listen to game mag reviewers. Nice FPS if it wasn't supposed to be a sequel to a great game. One massive disappointment, zero replay value... strike that, zero play value. Uninstalled after 2 days. Expand

A huge dissapointment. Expected something like Boiling Point but with better production values. Got a pure boring console game without any "living world" whatsoever. Just spawning enemies at checkpoints making travelling between two points an exercise in patience. Boring, repetetive without any depth, whatsoever. Hopefully, this game will not sell on PC and the producers will realize they cannot sell console games on PC. PC games require more substance and depth and this games has none of that. Hope the shope has a money back guarantee. Expand

What a huge dissapointment. I try to only buy games that are groundbreaking and visually stunning. This game looks like it was made by amatures...unbelievable; has Crysis spoiled me? This is class of 2001 quality visuals, with my gtx260 card cranked. Dull graphics with no contrast. Environment doesn't blend in well, the AI movements look fake and repetative. the screen shake while sprinting is nauseating, and the sky always seemed too bright. maybe it'll be better with dx10, but this is unacceptable for a modern hyped up, expensive game. I havn't played very far yet, as i was so disgusted with the quality, no wonder they didn't release a demo. If this wasn't called far cry 2, no one would have bought it. Expand

Overall an entertaining Game, but the Ai suck, Graphic not as good as Crysis, missions boring. And: their are no Civilians in the Game, no children and nearly no women.Next thing is, that the 2 partys in the Game, who should fight against each other, only fight against you, whether you are doing a job for them or not, it just doesn't matter at all, which kills the whole "civil-war in africa" scenario. Next thing is, that the map is to big.At the beginning its fun to drive through africa, but if you are driving from corner of the map to the other for the fifth time it's just boring. After all I'm very disappointed, it could've benn a great game, but after 4 hours of playing the Game, I'm done with FarCry2. Expand

Wounder why there is no demo? Worst Game of the year, thats why. It offers nothing new to any fps besides the cool map editor and the fire physics. Besides horrible controls for the 360 which make it impossible to kill enemies with 1 head shot, and the AI constantly respawns within seconds once you kill everyone. What a joke this game is. Repetitive gameplay, for instance. 1 Get a mission from your boss. 2 Drive across the map with everyone shooting at you.. why, I dont know. 3. Kill the target. 4. Repeat. .... GTA in the jungle. The multiplayer is the worst ive ever seen. Takes you about a whole clip to kill someone and thats if your able to hit them with the horrible controls. Try turning while your running, good luck. I can go on and on, and i will. This game has absolutely no resemblence to farcry 1. NOTHING!!! This game is supposed to be destructable gameplay? Ya you can blow up oil drums and burn grass but thats all! Holy crap you cant even blow up a straw hut with an rpg so excuse me? Battlefield Badcompany is 99 percent destructable enviroment and Farcry 2 is 5 percent if that... If your going to think this is the game for you because you love mp fps dont buy this. Im a hardcore FPS gamer. I play Counterstrike, Unreal tournament (not 3 . ..sucks) , Battlefield Games, Far cry 1, deadspace, resident evil, and so on. Far cry 2 is the biggest dissapoint since doom 3. For the love of god dont buy this game, rent it if your curious. Dont waste 70 bucks like the rest of us. Expand

Many criticisms have been leveled at Far Cry 2, for example that it's a wannabe GTAIV, or its just another generic shooter, or that it has a shallow story. Firstly, Far Cry 2 neither wants to be GTAIV, nor benefits from being compared to that game. Far Cry 2 is not generic, it's dynamic, graphically impressive, exhilarating and at times exhausting and frustrating. While the story is blunt and basic, it's well executed. You're character is in a war zone, so you're under constant attack when traveling from point to point. A unique game that requires commitment and patience, but when you pull off a successful mission it really pays off. Expand

A beautiful and extremely boring game. As with previous games in the series, the gameplay centers around driving a car through the jungle and meeting randomly generated enemies. When driving on a generic road, you will reach crossroads that are often guarded by 3-4 generic soldiers with generic assault rifles or shotguns. They can easily be dispatched from your generic jeep's mounted machinegun. When you reach your mission objective, there will be some small camp filled with generic soldiers that regenerate constantly. Your best bet is to run in, grab whatever your mission objective is, then run back out and drive out as fast as possible. The generic buddy that comes to save you if you "die" does not spice things up at all. Expand

Bland graphics when put up against Crisis and Hells Highway... You feel like you're in some Dark, boring Wasteland rather than Africa...shot by Uber AI who you rarely see, this fps is nothing special...In fact it's nothing much at all!....The T-Shirt in the fancy Box is pretty bland too!.... First, this game has absolutely nothing to do with the original. Different developer, different characters, different weapons, different content, and a different engine. I hate this game but forced myself to play completely through it. AI: Likes to get shot while driving cars, will relentlessly follow you until they are dead. Will show blood and then a few seconds later like a bad Uwe Bowl movie will react to being shot. This is quite comical as they will pick a random direction to jump backwards into to die and ultimately looks like bad acting. Story: Your in Africa and everyone wants to shoot you. You meet people who like making you drive endlessly for ridiculously long periods of time, eventually you get sick of barking like a dog for them and you WILL kill them. A new guy will then replace the last guy you killed who will suffer the same fate. You rescue people throughout the game and are rewarded by them by extending your missions and having you drive even further, they too die but only occasionally do you get to be the one to pull the trigger. In the console ports you are given special abilities, in this game you are given malaria... This is annoying as you need medication throughout the game, to get this you have to drive to town to pick up passports then you have to drive an average of 20 minutes to another location to pick up 1 - 2 pill. This is not remotely fun. Physics: My god bad, a two car collision on a Q6600 6gb DDR2 800, Geforce 8800GTS 640 will reduce the frame rate to 0.1fps from 60. This is unforgivable. Graphics: Very good, things look very realistic. Are however quite dull and lack color and variety. Environment: Rivers are lifeless, forests are lifeless but ironically the deserts have both zebras and ox. There are occasionally insects. Weapons: Good variety, ultimate I hate all of them. You have to constantly replace guns as they frequently. Accuracy sucks on all of them, machine guns are honestly less effective then the pistols and constantly want to fire in the air and will not let you counteract that movement. To get weapons that will jam slightly less often you have to complete extra missions to unlock weapons you can buy. There are very few weapon locations and they are very far away from any mission. Transportation: This absolutely ruins this game, nothing about it is even remotely fun. You drive around and get shot at frequently which forces you to get out of the car and fix your vehicle while being shot at. If you accidentally get to the edge of the map your car will be taken from you and you will be forced to walk potentially kilometers to the nearest road. Missions will force you to go to the far edges of the map EVERY time and then return to the center EVERY time. We get it, it's big. Gliders will result in your death, do not use these. Larger boats WILL get suck and you WILL have to swim far, avoid these also. They have 5 bus terminals in each map strategically placed as far away from any mission as possible still, they can save time. Conclusion: This entire game felt like work, I just hate it. Do not buy this game, do not endorse this crap. Expand

    I agree with Dave N.
The game is boring, graphics are awful and it seems this is mostly because they've decided to switch the engine from crytek to their own in house crap to save money.
I know designers in Montreal are lazy, but this is pathetic and a rip off. I want my money back!

After reading through the professional reviews, I realized none of the critics really pinpointed what I found to be the 2 main letdowns of Far Cry 2. I'll mention those right off the bat: (1) the lack of civilians and (2) the lack of skirmishes between the UFLL and APR throughout the countryside. Honestly, including these 2 aspects would make the game feel complete, even if the story or reputation system were not fully fleshed out. Readers, please think about these points. If FC2 included NPCs that did not attack you upon sight, such as the bus/taxi drivers (where did that guy at the beginning go? did he book for another country right after dropping you off in Pala?), the world would feel much more multi-dimensional. Instead, after hours of gameplay, the fact that EVERYONE (ok, just about everyone) attacks you becomes rather...goofy. Also, where the hell are the battles between the UFLL and APR? Again, it seems like its you vs. Africa and that makes FC2 feel more like any other FPS rather than a living microcosm. Sure, cease fires in the city makes sense, but have these factions just drawn a border across the map that they all abide by? I would love if an NPC pointed its firearm at someone besides me! So why the 8/10? Partially because the graphics, although not as realistic per say as Crysis, just work. The motion blur, fire, exaggerated explosions, and model animations are top notch. But mainly, regardless of the 2 above mentioned downfalls, weak MAIN story, and repetitiveness, the gameplay is THE BEST AMONG ANY FPS. FC2 plays like an improved COD4. Shooting weapons feels amazingly visceral, bullet penetrations is incredible, fire prorogation is actually very tactical, and, all in all, the games just immerses you in the game world. Expand

I'm appalled by the sore sports rating this game 1 out of ten. So it didn't live up to your expectations. BIG DEAL. GROW UP. The game is great. Beautiful graphics. Smart AI. It has almost everything I could wish for in a game. Aside from a few minor flaws, The game proved to be worth the wait.

This is a poor game that bears absolutely no relation to farcry. Its a really poor marketing cash-in - an insult to gamers. This sort of thing was done in the 8 bit computing days when someone would make a crap game and slap a film license on it and it would sell like hot cakes. I sincerely hope this game doesn't. Farcry is one of my favourite games. This is not farcry 2, crysis is farcry 2 in all but name. And whats with the high scores? I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of the high scores in this comments section are from ubisoft,. comments like "its a cross between crysis and stalker and cod 4 but better" just sound like blatant marketing flannel. Warning, this game is a Console port... This is probably a great game on a console, but on a PC is a very disappointing. Controls are frustrating for a PC game. For example; different buttons for getting in then getting out of a vehicle. No lean, no prone, no weapon options (can't change to single fire mode for EX). Game play is the same way, great graphics but consistency and AI are very lacking. I Buy this for a console, not for a PC! Expand

A lot of fun to be had driving around the brilliant terrain, scouting out for guard posts and planning the best method of attack. The controls feel fine. I don't understand why people are complaining about the game being repetitive, it's an FPS, of course the whole game is going to be point click shoot. Don't believe the hype about this game, but don't believe the hate either. It might not be for everyone, It doesn't live up to what it's supposed to be - but it's still a lot of fun. Expand

Once you get past the unique setting and the stunning graphics, you find a frustrating and mediocre shooter with a bland story. Your missions require you to drive (or bus!) all over the map, which by itself is alright, but once you take into account the fact that every ten seconds you're getting attacked by a random patrol jeep or clearing yet another road block, the game slows to a grind. The missions are essentially the same thing over and over, so when you think about the fact that you have to battle your way to each generic mission in a story you don't really care about through several uninteresting fights at forty or fifty thousand guard posts along the way, the game quickly loses it's sheen. I think the main problem is that the developers tried to combine a sand box style game with straight forward shooter elements. In a shooter, constant combat is exactly what you want, but in a sandbox game, it's nice to be able to explore or travel to and from missions without getting attacked or feeling like you have to creep along the road and around each outpost. This game is not worth the time or the money. I would recommend passing it up for a legitimate title. Expand

Overall: 4.7/10---Overrated, disappointing for a game with such high expectations. Simply put, the high detail and realism just aren't enough to mask bigger flaws in the game. Length of game: 10 hours - 40 hours Gameplay: 7/10 I like the openness of each area and the mixed tactics to assaulting every outpost or location. Unlike a traditional straightforward first-player shooter such as the Call of Duty series, the game will allow you to approach each enemy differently depending on the weapons and your individual style. I also like the strict first-person view through the entire game. From shooting enemies to reviving allies to performing surgery on yourself, the camera focuses on how your individual character would act. However, there are MANY flaws in the AI: first, they respawn much to fast to be realistic. (Walk/Drive away from an outpost and come back and fresh troops will replace the ones you just killed minutes ago.) Second, the AI's ammunition isn't realistically consistent. (Keep an enemy with a mortar alive and he'll keep firing shells even past pounding a mile-deep crater into the ground.) Third, the AI takes way too many bullets to kill. (8 AK-47 rounds to kill a guy without a shirt on.) There are many other first-person actions that are very much simplified (like checking ammo in a clip and repetitive stabbing motions with the machete), but those would only be the icing on the cake here. Graphics/Animation: 10/10 Some of the most realistic I've ever seen in a game. With the graphics setting on your computer turned up to the highest, the fire blazes very realistically and the sun's glare catches you when staring directly at it. The AI doesn't seem to have a leg or arm sticking out in a random place, so that helps. Only fault here is the tremendous amount of computer power required to run the game at full graphics quality, but this is a necessity for all high-end PC games. Sounds/Acting: 3/10 The sounds of the game are horrible. What little music there is happens to be completely boring (and much too quiet!) and only makes the game less appealing as a FPS. The only positive here is the action music, which will make your heartbeat race during an intense firefight. The game's voice acting is absolutely horrendous. The actors make no breaks in speaking and do not sound the least bit realistic, especially for a game that strives on realism and higher quality. The game is also very serious and humorless, and even the jokes that the actors make are overshadowed by the darkness and bleakness of their surroundings. Replay Value: 1/10 Absolutely NO replay value whatsoever. At the beginning you have a choice of many different characters, but the choices you make don't affect the missions/gameplay that you end up with. Also, the missions you can perform are very tedious and repetitive. Assaulting an outpost or area becomes the same, over and over, killing enemies or destroying a target or talking to an NPC. Essentially, this becomes the backbone of the game, and absolutely kills the replay value. However, if you like doing the same thing over and over again, this game (and a job on an assembly line) may be perfect for you. Multiplayer: 5/10 Not much to say here, other than the fact that the multiplayer has a Call of Duty-based style. In fact, I would prefer multiplayer over single player because of the fact that you fight human players instead of repetitive computer AI that repeatedly hurls itself at you. Despite its multiplayer mode, I would have prefered that the mods sacrificed the multiplayer and instead focused on working out single player improvements. Lack of a co-op (2 player) campaign also deducted points from this category. Player Created Mods/Addons: 2/10 Little player support here in the way of modding capabilities. Ubisoft has ignored players' requests to include SDK (which would allow much expanded player modding capabilities) and the most people can do is make new maps for multiplayer. Final Comments: I would NOT recommend this game. Most gamers (especially those who enjoyed Far Cry 1) would be severely disappointed with the outcome and gameplay of Far Cry 2. Why do old games with horrible graphics but incredible gameplay (such as Counter-Strike Source and Half-Life 2) remain popular even today? The uniqueness of their gameplay overshadows their lack of graphical detail. Although this game has excellent graphics, a very realistic world, and open choice in gameplay, the repetition and slightly problematic AI for single player causes this game to go down under. Expand

I love this game. Once I got over the little annoying things, and started to treat it as a tactical-rpg-shooter, I enjoyed it much more. People buying this game hoping it's a great FPS like COD will be disappointed. Even though it is widely considered a 100% FPS, The open ended world makes it act almost like an RPG, which is why lots of people hate it.I enjoy planning out missions, creating distractions, using fire against them, etc. The weapons ARE different, including a wide variety of weapon types, each with it's own range and fire rate. Vehicle driving can get tedious, however. Expand

Man, let me tell you, when i first started playing this game i thought it was a PIECE OF CRAP. But, since i had bought it off steam, i wanted my money's worth. I found that once you raise the difficulty to the last 2 levels, there are more AI enemies, and they are smarter, and if you decide to ignore the cars altogether, nd use boats to travel the rivers if need be, then the game gets exponentially more fun, because; one, there werent enough anemies to make things interesting in the lower level difficulties, plus they were stupid. and two; cars take away 70% of the gameplay, which is exploration, and make it feel like doom 3 outdoors because you're stuck seeing the same roads over and over again. So, once you raise the difficulty, and ignore the cars the game is worth an 8.5/10. but i gave it a 7, because you should have to ignore certain gameplay aspects for a game to be fun Expand

Excellent game with a few significant annoyances. I think the reason why so many people here give it such a low rating is because everyone expected a linear game like Farcry 1, instead they got an open world / sandbox game like grand theft auto 4. It seems to me the people who are giving the game bad reviews are trying to play an open world game in a linear style... in that they think they must kill every bad guy they see to progress. Maybe Ubisoft should have emphasised the different style of game in there marketing more to make people understand... once you understand this you tend to be a bit more cunning, using the rivers, driving across plains, and simply running through gaurd posts in your jeep, jumping on the gun to stop anyone in vehicles following you. They could have varied the mission a little more though - especially the "destroy the arms convoy" to gain new weapons... they're very samey... but as you get new weapons and experiment with how you approach missions, you can get creative in a way that you just can't seem to in linear shooters. Graphics are amazing - best I've ever seen I think, but also because of the atmosphere... it really does feel like you're in an African country got to hell. What's more it runs far better than Crysis - very smooth on high quality settings whereas the exact same rig playing Crysis will only get me medium settings for a slightly slower framerate. My only real gripe is the driving... I seem to spend 2/3 of the game driving somewhere... yeah there's a bus system, but I wish it had the quick travel system of fallout 3... even more bus stations would do it though. Expand

A huge letdown and tons of lost potential. At first i couldn't wait to get my hands on it, but after playing it for few hours i gave up... At the top on my FC2 hate list: 1. Enemies respawn in a matter of few minutes. Once I realised it, I've stopped to care about bad guys shooting at me. What's the point in fighting anyone, if you know that they will respawn very shortly anyway?? Enemy respawns work great in rpgs, l4d and in many other games, but in FC2 those are just out of place and badly thought through. 2. Very stupid and unfair AI. Once you shoot at someone, everyone knows exactly where you're. Hell, you don't even have to shoot, quietly kill a lone guy with your machete while no one is around and you will have all neighborhood troops rushing to your position. Collective consciousness ftw... Also everyone whom you encounter on your way through the land will be trying to kill you :/ 3. Toy guns. Devs talked about realism in every part of FC2, but couldn't even get the basics like the guns done right...:/ Among other things, it takes almost a whole mag to kill a guy who's running around just in his T-shirt. Mounted MGs seem to shoot rubber bullets as well. (maybe the respawns would have been half so bad, if you could actually take down your enemies with 3-5 bullets) 4. Generic and repetitive missions. i guess this one is self explanatory, nuff said. 5. Driving from mission to mission gets old and boring very fast. Those were the major things that i didn't like. I left out other issues with malaria, lack of popper interaction with the game world and its characters, dull story & etc. Also the absence of crocs or any life in the water was kinda disappointing, since the game features so many large areas with water (which i was avoiding in the beginning of the game like stupid :/). IMHO except pretty graphics and sound, this game doesn't have very much to offer to fps fans. FC2 is nothing but an overhyped, fancy looking arcade shooter and its anything but what developers claimed it would be. 6/10 Expand

Most annoying game ever? Why yes, yes it was. From the start, the game was frustrating to say the least. Apart from the slow and seemingly over the top (click on him endlessly till he finishes what he has to say) character interaction, it's not as open as it could have been. The landscape looks great, but you'll soon find it tiresome, as areas you just cleared, seemed to be instantly teaming with the same guys again, after returning within seconds. Plus when getting missions, they inevitably end up being the other side of the map, meaning long and repetitive trips. Want to get up that small hill to shoot with your sniper? Well no you can't, your character seems unable to climb the slightest hill and gets stopped in his tracks by small logs etc. So the open landscape you see, is actually very limited. The weapon system. It seems they have decided not to let you chose what weapons you would like to carry. Sure you can carry different weapons, but if you want to carry say a sniper rifle and an assault rifle, forget it. But at the same time they let you carry a sniper and an LMG???? Then there's the enemies you meet. Each and everyone of them has X-ray eyes. Not only do they know exactly where you are, but can see you through certain rocks and deep foliage. They know you are coming before you do, has to be the worst AI I've seen in a while. Stealth on this game is not and option, because even with the stealth weapons, the enemies know your position right away. It can be the middle of the night, and out of no where a guy on another part of the map starts shelling you, or a sniper the other side of a bunch of trees, starts shooting you. This is not the Far Cry 2 you or I was looking for, or expecting. Sure it looks good, but that doesn't last long and neither does the fire. Not a patch on the first tbh. This game could have been so sweet, shame they made such a pigs ear of it. Expand

To sum things up, it's extremely boring, repetitive, bad story, bad gameplay, bad "level" design and just badly design in every aspect of the game. It's all been said before...but i feel so let down by this after all the anticipation...sure, the world they've created is beautiful, the graphics are very good (not brilliant..) and the game engine is top drawer...but it all starts to fall down after you've enjoyed the scenery for a while...re-spawning enemies with dodgy AI...some who are a crack shot from an absurd distance while some can be standing right next to you...it's also not a game you can just jump into. If you don't mind a more thoughtful RPG approach then i suppose this is pretty decent, but it's just not much fun...long jeep journeys, repairing your vehicle every 5 minutes...a ropey plot and your malaria hampering you constantly...Great games cannot be left alone until you've clocked them...i can take or leave this and if i never load it up again i won't wonder "what if". A crying shame...so back to Crysis/Warhead I go and if i didn't realise how good they were before FC2, I do now. Expand

I do feel harsh negatively reviewing a game I haven't finished - nor spent considerably long playing at that - but this in itself indicates how poor this game is. A game that fails to keep your interest from the very beginning is poorly designed, and this certainly describes this inept sequel. Repetitive gameplay (shooting countless enemies, constantly driving to nowhere with poorly implemented vehicle mechanics); a open-ended, barren landscape, that restricts your freedom by inexplicably bottlenecking your progression and forcing you through numerous guarded checkpoints; quickly respawning enemies at said checkpoints; enemies with ridiculously poor AI; quite average plot; repairing every vehicle with the same wrench; guns jamming every other magazine. And the introduction of malaria is possibly one of the laziest gameplay dynamics I've seen in a while - it restricts your ability to properly explore the 'open' landscape unabated. The original wasn't a fantastic game by any definition, but it was fun and it did allow for pseudo non-linear gameplay. This forgets the fun and fails to improve anything the original offered. In summary, it's an appalling disappointment. Expand

Ok. to the guy in the meeting who said "guns jamming won't be fun" and "malaria won't be fun" and "shooting someone 20 times at close range to kill them won't be fun" you were right. I had high hopes for this game... the idea of it was really up my alley and I've now tried (hard) three times to get into the game, but man. Wtf? There is so much POTENTIAL here, but design decisions really got in the way. Next time please remember to 'kill your babies' and cut out the stuff people won't like. Nothing like a game saying 'a gun jamming is realllll, malaria is more reallll.. adn then having me shoot a guy 5 times.. in the head.... at close range... to kill him? And why can't HIS gun jam?" I chalk this up to lead design not being able to take and implement internal criticism. or a CEO sticking to his guns on the wrong ideas. I say this because it is obvious that each and every element was executed remarkably by the artists, programmers and animators. So, to the Lead Designer, Creative Director or CEO, remember that fun is empowering a player to do things they could only do in their dreams. When I played this game I felt like the sick gimp with a malfunctioning water pistol. Make it fun instead. Expand

What a disappointment. This is a by-the-numbers FPS that does not deserve the Far Cry label. The AI is dreadful (you know exactly what the bad guys are going to do several seconds before they even move), the visuals are dull and lifeless (endless brown sand - remember the stunning visuals of Far Cry?), the missions are disgracefully repetitive (find a truck that drives in cicles on the map, blow it up, or find some rebel leader and kill him), over and over and over... weapons that spontaneously rust from one shot to the next (but don't worry, the gun shop has an infinite supply), enemies that respawn with no apparent justification, arbitrary rules governing what you can and can't carry, endless hours of driving back and forth through featureless terrain, and of course everyone (and I mean everyone) you meet will immediately go into a frenzy and try and kill you, even punters in family cars. Suspension of disbelief? Immersion? Forget it. Expand

Big disappointment. Driving endlessly over african roads searching for new missions is boring. The enemies you encounter do the same thing every time - jump in a 4 wheel drive with a mounted gun and chase you, and when on foot they are wooden and stilted - compared to Call of Duty modern warfare the movement is very poor. Not even going to finish it. Luckily I got it with $20 bucks off and its still not worth $80. Expand

Yes, a big disappointment here too. Didnt come even close to the expectations. Like said tens of times; missions get quickly boring and are repeating themselves. The environment feels 'dead' to me. Outpost... yeah, i wont bother. Mountains break awfully the first feeling of freedom. Maps are boring in design. Driving cars is boring and badly made. AI aint the brightest. There39;s no voice acting, ppl just mumble. Enemies have far too good vision which makes infiltrating not an option. What comes to player movement, that's more than few steps behind crysis and cod4. Multiplayer mode I havent tried. Graphics are nice and the firefights I enjoyed. Also jamming weapons and the animations of weapons is good. Guns feel real not toyish like in cod4. Expand

Ubisoft is consistently making very pretty games that are failing on the game play front. The graphics are not bad, they make up for lower-poly models (console port) with lovely DX10 shaders. Likewise the fire propagation and realistic day-night cycle is wonderfully done, and capturing the sense of Africa is absolutely spot-on (Lived there for 14 years). Also Combat is also done well, and the jamming and healing animations are pretty facking sweet. Otherwise, everything else just screams port. The story has some thought in it, but feels thrown together with the unnaturally sped-up dialogue. The open world is fun, until you realize that you'll be shooting through the same checkpoints quite literally hundreds of times, making combat extraordinarily repetitive. The fabled destructability is so-so, nowhere near the level you'll see in Crysis (again, console port). There are factions, but they're not tied to any checkpoints... so the story ends up doing one factions missions until finished, then repeat ad nauseum. Ubisoft evidently tried to add some staying power with GTA-esque collectibles and small side missions, although they are no where near the quality shown in GTA. Unlocking guns means doing the exact same mission 8 times, albeit in different parts of the map. Multiplayer is practically a joke, the interface was obviously designed for the console community. And if multiplayer is a joke, who will bother with the map editor no matter how well it has been done? In conclusion, Far Cry 2 was a fun experiment in open-world first person shooters but reeks firmly of being thought out for console, and then brought over to the PC for maximized profits. Expand

OK as shooters go but totally and unforgivably poor in many areas - it could have been so much better. Somebody on the team that produced this game needs to study balistics - shotguns past 50 metres will hurt but they can't kill, you don't get back up when hit by sniper rifles such as the AS50 - which can penetrate serious thicknesses of concrete - except in far cry 2, the AI accuracy while shooting from the hip and running is the ultimate BS, if you get hit in the chest by a decent 45 you aren't going to react like you got stung by a wasp. Whatever you drive the patrols cars are always faster than you, no matter how well concealed when using silent weapons such as the dart rifle the enemy can find you instantly - seemingly able to see through walls etc. The Malaria thing is a joke - it can be cured - except in far cry 2 - and when a medicine is found you destroy it and don't stock up first ... feeble. The instant 'replacement' of AI at the guard posts is just absolute .... of the worst kind. This game passed a little time but it has now been uninstalled permanently. Not worth the money. Expand

Although I was hesitant about getting this because of the mixed reviews and Africa not sounding so appealing, Far Cry 2 is surprisingly an okay game. What makes the game worth playing is simply the stunning environments. The developers smoothly mixed together lush jungles, grasslands, and some deserts that make trekking through FC2 endlessly fun. Another thing that never gets old is setting the world on fire, which creates interesting gameplay tactics and challenges. I also found the driving and especially the boating to be very enjoyable, particularly when combined with the fun of hunting down the diamond caches (ignoring the silliness of people leaving diamonds lying in briefcases around the world and you being the only one that can find them). The combat is also pretty good, although I tended to favor the mounted weapons a bit too much. But why wouldn't you? The mounted 50cal and grenade launcher (with unlimited ammo) are the most badass weapons in the game. One thing I didn't care much for was the weapon loadout system, which forces weapons into three types, of which you can only have one of each. I felt like this shut me out from being able to use some weapon loadouts like a sniper rifle plus an assault rifle. Another thing I didn't like was the oft-maligned instant respawning of enemies at checkpoints, which was really bothersome at first when your weapons are fairly weak and you don't have many syringes. Later on, the respawning is only a slight nuisance, however. The worst thing about this game is the story, or the nonexistence of a story. It doesn't make any sense ever. You're asked to do some rather vile things to people with little justification while neither of the two factions seem to care whether you've screwed them over in the past. Likewise, no one you encounter out in the world is friendly, no matter if you've helped their faction in the past. But if you like adventuring through the wild with frequent shootouts, Far Cry 2 is a good choice. Expand

While most of Far Cry 2's negative points (repetitive gameplay, long / boring travel times) do exist, they don't damn the game outright. Not as good as Crysis, but still holds its own. The economy is simple, almost no NPC world, but the fights are fun, hello? Who doesn't like using their multi-tool to extract bullets from their leg while fixing their broken shotgun by pounding on it? The situations and dialogue are probably not that realistic, but the paranoid style of it is great, rather unique. The reason I like Far Cry 2 as a gamer is because it carries ideals that are notably absent from most multi-platform releases; an interesting variation on level structure and environment for what is essentially a CoD-ish shooter. Definitely NOT Crysis, not crafted as skillfully (the levels never reach the level of scope as the more focused chapter-based approach of Crysis does), but is nevertheless much larger - and although some areas are boxy, other areas (e.g. lake in 1st half) have a great, natural presentation when you come across them. The environment doesn't feel as random as F:NV or Oblivion, most of it feels deliberately constructed. I think with a few basic changes, more incentive to run around the levels (see: GTA, Fallout, etc), the Far Cry 2 template could go from "cool / intriguing" to "really fun to play". At times the game is gorgeous, not as technically varied as Crysis, but that sun-blasted hard-shadowed plastic look really kills it in the dense jungles and muddy river canyons. Expand

It's an alright game. The story line is somewhat repetitive and the jobs are somewhat boring and repetitive as-well but the story line is generally good. The system where they have the partners or buddies that help you in the game is also good, since they can die if they come to help you or they can just die almost anywhere even if you aren't there. The AI is somewhat bad and almost everywhere you go, theres bad-guys. You almost never see any team mates unless it is a story mission. Anyways, the graphics are good, the story is good, theres even wildlife that you can run over and poach (not that I like to poach or hit them with a moving vehicle). I say this game is a renter or a cheap buy, it can generally get boring. The multiplayer is kind of bad too. Theres too many bad things about the multiplayer, I wont even speak of it much. Expand

What's terrible is that this game would actually be good: If they allowed it to be modded. There were a lot of stupid design decisions, but the engine is great, the production values are high and the world layout & map aren't too bad. Allowing things to be tuned like unrealistic spawns, strange object behavior, poor weapon and damage modeling and to extending the duration of bullet wound decals last would have made this a hit. Fallout games come riddled with issues, but after 3 months in the wild mods make them outshine everything else. Expand

I truly am mixed on the case of Far Cry 2. On one hand, it introduces a lot of game mechanics, all of which work and aren't pointless. This include the buddy system, gun jamming, sectored health regeneration, sickness, safe houses etc. The gun play is good, and the AI is better than most. On the other hand, driving through the jungle and stopping to deal with another guard post gets repetitive. The missions and stories are presented in confusing ways, and don't make much sense. I kept doing missions for opposing factions, and they didn't seem to care. At one point a buddy offered me a way to complete a mission that was exactly what my quest giver told me not to do. Doing it my buddy's way imposed no penalty. To this day there is a game breaking glitch at the 27% mark, one of which I got. A main mission giver simply never appears, so I stopped playing. The game has an amazing atmosphere and game play with competent mechanics that make sense, but it is bogged down by bad development choices and repetitiveness. Expand

The best way to describe this game is as a big missed opportunity that could've been amazing but only turned out "okay". The exploration of the big open world mixed with good FPS mechanics is fun for a while but about 40% through the game you unlock a second "world" and realize you're going to do the same things once again through the next 60% in an annoying similar location. Other than repetitiveness, the next big issue for me is the enemies instantly respawning when you're out of view. It's annoying to drive by, clear out an outpost, come back by the same outpost a few minutes after completing the objective and having to clear it out again.

The game does do things right however to warrant a purchase for $25 at the most. For one, the gunplay and shooting mechanics are top notch and killing is very satisfying. Second, there are loads of guns from shotguns to sniper rifles to crossbows with exploding arrows. It makes the game feel less repetitive and more fun to mix up your approach to combat whether it be a stealthy sniper or a rambo style where you charge in a base guns ablaze. I say give it a buy if you can find it for around $25 or less because unless you REALLY love the game's combat and can stand doing the same thing over and over, you probably won't be finishing the singleplayer.

I bought this game on steam for $5 on a sale, after reading the reviews and hearing about the game I thought wow this is a steal this game looks/seems great! I read the negative and positive reviews but shrugged off the negative because EVERY game has some bad reviews right? Well upon starting the game I was blown away! It was awesome, some specifics (spoiler) like fixing cars, jumping into the gunner seat of a car, and seeing a gun shop with unlock able weapons??? Sounds like a win to me! So I played the game, decided to do some weapon unlocks first as I wanted some bad ass stuff. So I did it, go to this point and destroy the convoy, check! went back and got my just reward. Went to another weapon dealer and took his quest to unlock different weapons.... go to this point and destroy the convoy... ok the guns are enticing enough to do it so I did. Did a main mish quest to try to liven up the game, go here and INSERT ONE(destroy, capture, free from captivity) this objective and get paid. So I did it and the first few were fun but then they ask you to do THE SAME THING, OVER AND OVER. Different places, different "objectives", you do the same thing. Ok so to sum up the rant: The main quests are very redundant, the gun quests (only way to unlock guns) are all EXACTLY THE SAME THING, not even a different story. Basically every single quest you take from any source anywhere in this game goes like this: take quest, drive 10 mins stopping every 2 or 3 mins to wipe out a "guard post" complete mish. Take next mish. That system right there is problem number 1. Number 2 is another HUGE gameplay problem, as seen in some of the other negative posts (RichardH goes into more detail) The guards at a guard post are INFINITE. You kill them, drive away and instantly there are the same number back! Its not even fun to kill them its just **** annoying, seriously! So OK its not bad enough that I have to drive across the stupid map to do a mish that would be just as "fulfilling" if it was half the distance but I have to stop to clear out the same guard posts on the same road I came down 5 mins ago! And ANOTHER thing, there is no fast travel, you can take a bus that takes you to 1 of 4 places on the outskirts of a map but you have to board the bus at one of those 4 stops so it doesn't help at all. And EVERY, AND I MEAN EVERY mission is on the opposite end of the map. Another thing I was dissapointed in this game was there is nothing to be done to the guns once you get them. There are A FEW guns that have things like a silencer, but you cant choose what you want to put on what or anything its all pre-done and you have 0 options, idk about you but I like options. Now small problems that are VERY frustrating: when you try to revive a friend you have to feel him up first and it takes a solid 10 seconds to revive someone when ultimately you do nothing more than stick him with a needle, seriously if your in the middle of a fight you cant revive anyone because you get shot up. It should take a second or two at most. Also on the same subject when someone comes to revive you, say you accidentally kill yourself (I did it jumping off a bridge into what I thought was deep water to get a chest) the team mate still has the same animation as doing it under fire and it takes FOREVER. Long story short, Im sorry guys as much promise as this game has I couldn't recommend it to anyone, Im not even happy with it for the $5 i wasted on it. Its too redundant, too fake (infinite enemy etc), too slow, and frankly boring. Idk how this game is a sequel if the first one is anything like this im not sure how they grossed enough to make this. The only reason it gets a 3 is because of the unique things it brings to the table (however annoying then get within the hour). Expand

The alleged 'no invisible walls' aspect of this game is entirely untrue, they cleverly disguise these walls as areas where your character starts to suffer from heat stroke and malaria and will continue to do so until you turn back. The gameplay, at first, is insanely fun and the idea that you can kill whoever - including key characters - is awesome - however, this isn't really the case. In some areas you can't use weapons, thus making it impossible to kill certain key characters. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, it just sort of takes from what was originally promised. Really this is a fun game, but it gets super repetitive. The free roam aspect is great with the type of shooter it is, but there's no real variety in what sort of enemies you can fight and it almost seems like the game is purely kill or be killed. If you wander the deserts but run into a car that drives by, they're always enemies, and if you're spotted they'll want to kill you. Expand

Far Cry 2 is a very mixed bag. On the one hand, the game gives you a stunningly re-created African locale to roam around in and cause general havoc. There's lots of weapons to play with and the missions are open enough that you can approach them anyway you want. Now, on the other hand, the game features some simply bizarre design choices. For instance, the majority of the game is spent driving around from one objective to the other. Even if you're the most patient person in the world, the amount of driving is going to really grind on you eventually. Furthermore, the enemy variety in the game is basically non-existent, you're going to face the same AK toting enemies over and over for the entire play-through. Also, the enemies themselves possess amazing accuracy and self-awareness, to the point that simply breathing in their direction means that every one of them in the nearby radius will instantly know your position.

Far Cry isn't a bad game, it's quite fun in short stints. But it's just let down by the aforementioned AI problems and broken stealth game-play. With a bit of polish, developed story, improved fast travel system and some more variety in missions, it could have been great fun. As it stands, it's just "fun".

The graphics are beautiful, but that alone can't compensate all the flaws this game has. The missions are boring and repetitive, you'll spend an awful lot of time driving around to reach your goal which is also boring. While driving around you'll also encounter scout posts where you'll be attacked, and the worst is that the enemies respawn there every mission, which makes for a frustrating experience. The AI is horrible. they don't take cover or try to flank, the only thing they do is walk straight towards you while shooting at you. The stealth mechanic is broken as once an enemy catches a glance of you all enemies will immediately know the EXACT spot where you are and will continue to follow you around until either you or they are dead. The story is dull and virtually non-existant. The characters are all one-dimensional and the voice acting is atrocious; all characters talk extremely fast and sound emotionless.

Far cry is a series of games where each game has almost nothing to do with any of the others in the series.

The original game was a highly linear FPS with an odd cheesy storyline that was basically a very weird version of Half-Life with absolutely terrible AI.

Far Cry 2 takes place in a random "African" nation where you go around trying to find malaria pills and try to get to the bot
tom of some conspiracy or another.

In place of the linear nature of Far Cry 1, FC2 throws you into a large world where you basically have free reign to go wherever you want, which is a welcome change.

Positives: Visually great, the graphics are nice.
    Nice open world to explore.
    gunplay is pretty fun.

Negatives: Guns have condition, and they have the reliability of an original M16 rifle in the deep jungle, usually, you can only put through a couple hundred rounds before most guns are basically completely useless.
Respawning enemies, they respawn every couple minutes, meaning you MUST fight whenever you want to go anywhere at all.
    Mostly pointless story.
90% of the guns you have are left-handed

In general, its a "meh" game that will keep you entertained for a while, though its not nearly as satisfying to play compared to the 3rd game in the series.

First: Don't be misled by the title, this game has absolutely nothing to do with the previous games. Anyway. While the graphics of Far Cry 2 are good for a 2008 game, the game itself is not. The main story, you killing "The Jackal", is driven by about 14 missions. It takes about 2 - 3 minutes to finish the main part of each mission (meaning: killing everybody in a compound and/or destroying some item)...but each mission is accompanied by driving sequences that take about 5 minutes each. (Driving to the mission objective and driving back to the faction houses) That means you're mostly just driving around being attacked all the time by some guys of each faction. (I finished the game on normal difficulty on my first playthrough in about 4 and a half hours.) It's just repetitive and boring...also, every camp you clear is full of the same people again two minutes later. So don't bother.

No prone option, seems pretty weird. Crysis had a prone position, and that game had you as an elite Delta Force guy in an uber nanosuit with a magical armor shield, as opposed to being a malaria patient wearing a hawaiian shirt.

This game runs **** awesome. I have to turn everything to Low to make Crysis playable, whereas here I can run pretty much everything on medium with 2x AA with sil
ky smooth framerates. Definitely impressed, and while it doesn't quite look as amazing as Crysis, it's still pretty good. Think COD4 quality, or a notch above. Of course, COD4 didn't portray 50 square miles of terrain.

I was kinda disappointed by the weapon selection, just judging by the upgrade menu. Hopefully more guns'll get added to the list throughout the campaign, otherwise the selection isn't very impressive at all.

Another thing I noticed is that to use the weapon sights, you have to hold down the right mouse button, it doesn't work as a toggle like in other games. A little miffed by that at first, but you do get used to it. Not a gamebreaker.

Does anyone else feel the mouse sensitivity for the game menus is way too low? Just a minor nitpick of mine.

So far, it seems pretty easy, and I'm playing it on Hardcore. Maybe this is why they didn't feel a prone position was necessary? A bullet will take from 10-15% of my health. Hardly a Tom Clancy feel, so don't expect that. Infamous is another notch above, so you'll maybe want to try that for a bigger challenge. *shrug*

I've already talked about the weapon selection, but here's a bit more detail. There's 4 weapon slots, one for your machete, one for a primary weapon, one for a secondary weapon, and one for a special weapon. A primary weapon counts as shotguns, rifles, sniper rifles, and a grenade launcher. A secondary weapon counts as pistols, or machine pistols. A special weapon would be a machine gun, rocket launcher, or flame thrower. This seems alright, but is actually quite problematic with its restrictions. Because of the slots, no sane player will ever use a shotgun, since it counts as a primary and thus would take over the slot for rifles or sniper rifles, which are far more useful on the wide open African savannah. This is in contrast with Crysis, in which the best combo was often a sniper rifle coupled with a shotgun. In FC2, this combo is impossible, and thus the grenade launcher and shotguns must be neglected, which is a shame. Speaking of the lack of variety compared to a Rainbow Six game, there're only 3 shotguns, 3 assault rifles, a submachine gun, a grenade launcher, and 3 sniper rifles to choose from for the primary slot.

Another annoyance is the fact that throughout the landscape are various checkpoints manned by enemies. Clearing these checkpoints are pretty easy, but the problem is that they are quickly remanned as soon as you leave the area. With all the various traveling you must do in the game, it quickly becomes tedious reclearing the same checkpoints over and over again.

So far, I've been having fun sniping everything in sight. Though many tempting sniping spots are unfortunately out of reach due to the terrain being too steep to climb.

Oh yea... I did notice something really cool while playing earlier today. I'd sniped some guy in the chest but it wasn't a fatal shot so he staggered and fell down. A little later he got up to a crouch and a second enemy ran over and gave him a piggyback ride. No, I'm not kidding. Just thought that was pretty damn awesome.

I was disappointed with farcry 2, more than impressed by it. The graphics and physics in the world are admirable. It looks and feels very realistic. The virtually completely open world style is unique but fails during the implementation. The story is a bit interesting and realistic feeling but your character has absolutely no personality, or choices within the world, such that i cannot imagine how it changes with the character selected beyond the pair of shoes that you view during the game. The checkpoints re-spawn quickly once you pass them so you fight the same battles over and over, and over. The story sends you randomly all over the world and several times to the same locations with fully re-spawned enemies, so there is a LOT of repetition. Five stars, for an overall ok game, a plus one for an acceptable field of view that made it playable for me. Expand

On paper, Far Cry 2 looks like everything I would ask for in such as game: making FC into a proper open-world game and taking advantage of the engine. I'm not against the first game's linear progression, except that Jack Carver for me was completely unlike-able. Anyway, my first impressions of Far Cry 2 were quite good; the graphics are very well-done, the action is intense and the dialogue is well-written. That's just about all the main positives there are. Although the action is entralling and often tactical, the journey between them is arduous and turns into a commute between every mission which quickly turns into grinding. The missions themselves aren't very varied and are just a series of variations of blow up stuff, kill stuff, buy stuff and blow up other stuff. Story is almost entirely non-existent; not even a bare-bones story to give a sense of progression; just a series of disjointed missions interspersed with well-written dialogue. Enemies will also respawn literally minutes after you clear them out from a base, making it feel like a pest-control business rather than an actual conflict. So in short, Far Cry 2 has a lot of potential and succeeds in some areas, but it's just too repetitive and lacking in story to really prove its worth in the long run; wait for a Steam sale before buying it. This game is pretty good, the guns and upgrades are cool, the missions are pretty repedative except it takes way to many bullets to take someone down, like 7 shots it seems unless its a headshot...pretty sure someone being shot twice would put them to their knees, anyways whatever i like a challenge and the game isnt hard even with this issue on normal. The reason i give this game an 7 is because of what i just said and the driving. I like driving games, i like driving in real life, its just that the amount of driving in this game is way to much to reach your objectives...its not like GTA where driving is implimented in a reasonable way, in this game your almost nodding off to sleep at the comp because its so much and theres really nothing there to hold your interest except the occasional outpost with guys you have already killed going through the outpost a hundred times... i bought this game off Steam for 2.50 yes 2 dollars and 50 cents, on a sale, so was it worth it? hell yes! a good game, just to much downtime with the excessive driving. While this game is excellent on a number of fronts, it is unnecessarily unpleasant on others. The malaria, as a gimmick, just doesn't add to the enjoyment of the game and as a game mechanic, it's nothing more than a flimsy excuse for chasing down power-ups. The most unpleasant thing is that it turns everything into a timed quest. Timed quests are ok, if used sparingly and where a time element makes sense, but the constant stress of time running out for something completely irrelevant to your goals is a poor substitute for properly orchestrated suspense. But worst of all, it scuttles the one thing that makes this game stand out for the crowd: the joy of free exploration. You just can't enjoy that with this idiotic gimmick hanging over your head. A patch that does away with the ball and chain of malaria would turn this game from a frustrating curiosity to a memorable classic. Another unpleasant element is the way vehicles are driven. It's just not fun. It's clunky, erratic, and distracting. If it weren't for the vast distances you have to travel in this game, I'd prefer to run. Expand

The gunplay is golden, the graphics are amazing, the story and dialogue are horrible, the respawn times...infuriating. I still play this game once in a while because the combat is so well done and satisfying that i can't seem to get enough of it. Unfortunately i have a hard time completeing the game since i have to pass by the same respawning guards time and time again. Both "factions" look the same and there is basically no distinction at all between them. It's a very well done game, but a few key flaws prevent it from being a gem. Expand

Far Cry 2 problem is missions that repeat it selves and map that it more like labyrinth than actually free map. Stealth system is very bad or there isn't it at all. Plot is pretty vague. Lastly even though Jack Carver was not very memorable, dozen mute characters aren't even that.

This is probably the most repetitive and flawed FPS I've every played. The story itself is pretty good and the environment is wonderful but everything else is horrible, horrible done. The design flaws are some of the worst I've ever had to contend with and has completely turned me off of this series.

The game advertises secondary quests and factions but they have absolutely no impact
on the main game. The best way to play this game is to just do the main quest. While there are 2 factions everybody hates you all the time so working for a faction impacts only who gives you the mission. Each time you walk out the door they remind you they hate you. What is the use of having factions if everybody is your enemy. The game has many design flaws that probably sounded good on paper but were horrible in practice.

Let's start with the guard posts scattered throughout the maps. As you clean them out the map marks them as cleared and a counter lets you know how you're doing. Unfortunately if you go a little ways away and come back they are completely repopulated. Other than changing the icon on a map clearing out the posts serves no purpose whatsoever. I got to the point where I just ran through the post and only stopped if I had to.

The game requires that you micromanage your character. Guns jam, you have to take medicine periodically, cars break down and if you get low on health you have to use first aid or bleed to death. This all adds up to more focus on the character than combat. This game is most definitely a FPS because stealth just doesn't work here. As soon as you shoot anyone everyone knows where you're at and their accuracy is astonishing. I had 1 person shooting me with a pistol at long range, across a ravine, throw a wood wall and still kept hitting me.

Back to the health system. When your health gets really low you have to bandage or your die. No problem except the animation takes about 5 seconds and cannot be interrupted (except by enemy fire). And oh by the way the enemies can continue to attack. So if you're swarmed (which you often are by the end of the game) then you have no chance to recover so you reload. That's bad. Here's probably the most idiotic thing I've ever seen in a game it quick saves just before you start the long, uninterruptible animation. That means you get quick saves of the game just before you either get lucky and survive or you die. Whoever thought that was a good idea should never design a game again.

There are so many enemies running around in cars that you end up fighting more people getting to a mission (because the fast travel system isn't that fast) than in the mission itself. Even worse is that cars tend to not make any noise until they start shooting at you and if they are too close you cannot shoot back without getting out of the car.

Overall this game was not fun to play. I ran through most of the map just to get to a mission, stopping only when I had to. During the missions I went straight to the goal because nothing else had any impact anyway. Even the ending of the game where you had a choice to make had absolutely no impact on the ending. I cannot possible recommend this game to anyone other than a hard core FPS person who has nothing else to play. I remember when this game came out they advertised "realistic fire". Yes the fire looks awesome but if all I really wanted was to watch real fire I'd become a fireman. Clearly this game was sold based upon its name more than its design.

What a disappointment. It's just another boring, repetitive, overrated and overpriced game. I still wonder why they called this game Far Cry 2, as it has very little similarities to the first one. Every mission you take you have to go to the other side of the map driving a stinky old jeep on a dull landscape, and enemies at the checkpoints respawn every time you pass those points, and takes forever to kill. It also means that it will take a lot of time just getting from point A to B in order to attempt to start a mission. If I wanted more open-world I would play the GTA series or even Crysis for that matter. If I wanted to drive I would play the DIRT series.
It takes many many headshots to kill an enemy, and you cannot rely on large caliber weapons because somehow in this game shooting several rounds of 7.62x39mm into someone's face is not enough to kill him.
0.5 for Graphics (round up to 1), 0 for everything else. I am thoroughly disappointed.

Let's start off with the multiplayer-aspect. The guns all feel the same. What I mean by that is that it feels as if they've all got the same recoil and there doesnt seem to be any bulletdrop. You learn that one recoil and then you can adjust your aim to it no matter if you're using the heavy mg or a pistol. Other than that all the maps are basicly the same. There's like a hotzone in the middle and you can run around it - there it is. When a match is over and you're the best player on the winning team you can decide to either punish or spare the best player in the opposing team. That's about the only cool thing with the multiplayer-part. I'd sum it up as a **** clone of Call of duty-multiplayer - and im not even a call of duty fanboy. The single player was pretty fun when I started. The story was compelling enough for me to get interested in the antagonist and the main character (yourself) but once you got out of that first "zone" it all got worse. I thought that the survival-aspect seemed cool in trailers. But that was because I expected that the main character would have to collect eatable plants, hunt animals etc in order to survive. But nope. That's all part of some weird and huge unlock-system. You can make a backpack out of 2 X meat from animal Y. That animal is marked on your minimap so there's no way that you can miss it. The same goes for all the plants. Just look at your minimap and all you need to do is go there. It's an open world but since EVERYTHING is marked on the map it feels as if everything is already explored. You already know where everything is so there's close to no exploring. Sure, you can climb up a radiotower and the hotspots will become even more apparent to you (they actually show you how the place looks from an angle, instead of just the marked spot).

And if that wasnt enough the AI is beyond stupid. You can throw rocks to distract the AI, you've got an infinite amount of rocks and you can do it a billion times. Each time the AI goes "WHAT WAS THAT?!", each time just as surprised as the previous time you did it. Their reactiontimes also seem to be really slow. They aim at you and after about 5 seconds they start shooting. I guess this is some setting that would help console-players to kill their enemies fast enough but on a PC it's incredibly easy to get the kill before they actually start shooting.

Eventually the story just spins into a cliché and I totally lost interest. Stopped playing after about two hours of playtime. I doubt I will play it again. The co-op was repetative and easy (on the hardest difficulty). The co-op is not like single player. You're on a rail on one specific "mission" at a time. It's not even a story, you go get a bomb, place it and then you go to spot X. Mission complete and you go back to the lobby. All in all a really crappy game. It gets 2 because the voiceacting was better than average.

Just an Unforgettable open world FPS game, Amazing graphics with the African landscapes. The shooting is real, not just realistic. Too many weapons to use, The ability of driving vehicles and boats, you can use them to escape if you wish, but they are not vulnerable against rockets and bullets. There are too many ways to fight the enemies in vehicles, Destroying their cars and boats with RPGs and explosives are the very effective ways. I've once sneaked in an enemy post. Plugged explosives in a car, and escape in the remaining car. So when they follow me with their car I just pushed the button. You can be creative in that game if you want. The scenario is a bit repetitive but not boring and it stays an amazing game that worth to be played. Expand

The game is boring. The story line is a flimsy excuse for putting you in africa and the "twist" the developers try to incorporate into the game was worse than an Shyamalan movie twist. The mechanics are solid, in that, there are very few mechanics. To name all of them: Weapon degredation, brush fires, vehicles that can explode, AIs that will save your butt when you are about to die. A long list, I know. The game's graphics are very good. That's where the happy fun time ends. The game has about 6 different mission types. All of them basically include killing everyone, searching for diamonds, and getting diamonds for killing everyone. Wash, rinse, repeat. It's very much based on grinding and half of your game is taken traveling to the place to kill people. Every once in a while, you'll need something to keep yourself alive so you have to take a break from killing people, then it's back into the same old killing spree. I wouldn't really recommend this game unless you are incredibly bored and you need to kill a lot of easy to kill somethings. Expand

Far Cry 2 followed in the steps of its predecessor by failing to live up to its potential. This game has a lot of good points: the graphics and audio are excellent, the weapon selection and mechanics are great, and it has superb open-world design. However these elements are tarnished by some lousy mechanics such as repetitive missions, endlessly-respawning checkpoints, and a pointless faction system. I did like the buddy system, where your mercenary friends will occasionally give you intel on missions or rescue you if you get shot up in a firefight. I had mixed feelings about the story and characters (well there's only one or two 'characters' that deserve that title): the premise of the story and the elusive nature of your target is intriguing, and the monologues of the antagonist are compelling, but the game fails to deliver a coherent plot or ending. With a few changes to mechanics and a good writing team this game could have easily earned a 7 or 8, but as it stands Far Cry 2 falls far short. Expand

This game is kind of a mixed bag, while it has some unique and new elements it is poor in some ways. First off I hardly cared about the story, it just wasn't interesting at all, too many useless plot twists. The graphics and gameworld are great and dynamic, you have desert, jungle, and safari, I really enjoyed exploring the game world. On a similiar note, the driving and traveling in general is so tedious and boring. The weapons are awesome, theres so many ways to go about completing a mission, you could ambush your target with IED's, or you could do recon and then sneak, or you can just go in guns blazing. The game feels a little to lonely sometimes like the only people you'll ever see are enemies patrolling. I felt like the missions were too repetitive and tedious and it felt a little boring at some points. Overall this game is a good purchase. Expand

3+/5 (Kinda good) Looks good, feels good, vehicles, guns, open world, violence, stealth, diseases, etc. But the problem for me was that you cleaned up an area and came back 30 seconds later to find it completly alive with as much fighters as before. This is a massive "NO WAY THIS IS SOOOO STUPID" problem that makes you want to stop playing the game right there. Everything looks realistic and feels like it, but then BAM, you remember this is a game and it's kinda stupid. ALSO, why did they feel like it was a good idea to make me feel guilty for not searching for every goddamn briefcase when I passed by them. This "task" is not rewarding and you really do feel like you can't NOT do it. (yes, double-negative BECAUSE I CAN).

Far Cry 2 does not deserve a 5.6. It deserves an 8.7 IMO, because this game is amazing and was way ahead of its time. The fire spreads, which means that if you need to retreat, use molotovs, flame throwers, or the flare gun and create a fire boundary to keep your enemies at bay. Also, enemies are extremely realistic. If you surprise them they jump back, if they're on the ground they moan and scream, if they need help they call their friend's names. The driving is just what it should be. Vehicles steer nicely and are easy to drive. The vehicles are what a poor African country would have (old cars, buggies with a place for gunners, heavy assault trucks, ammo trucks, ATV's, and rare jeeps). The towns may not be what you expect; they have no civilians and look extremely poor. The missions are good and the game really creates a sense of "you're in it for the money, nothing else." This is a great game, and I hope you get it! Expand

Seemed like it was going to be good. Graphics, sound all impressive. Story kind of cool. But the more you play, the more repetitive this game gets. The problem is that it takes SO long to get from point A to point B. Checkpoints you've cleared become populated quickly so you end up battling practically every inch of the way if you want to get anywhere. It's a fatal flaw because you end up not really wanting to travel anywhere because of the tedium involved.

The only game left more unfinished by my friends might be Dead Island, which is a zombie version of this game. Great graphics, great acting, great audio, good gameplay, but it just becomes totally tedious to play. I understand the 5.6 10 user score, but the 85 100 critic score just reminds me why, like movie reviewers, professional critics all suck and should be summarily ignored.

Not that it has anything to do with playability of the merits of this game, but I'd like to understand why this game was even called "Far Cry". It's about as close in plot and story to Far Cry 1 as Bioshock is to Quake 4. LOL...

The only redeeming quality in this game is the graphics.

The enemy AI is terrible but, they just stand there shooting, all you have to do is snipe them all out easily because they don't take cover or move about much. Somehow they manage to hit you from long distances while you're on the move inside a vehicle, rubbish.

The vehicles all feel the same, even in GTA3 a very old game now t
hey managed to make you feel like you were driving different vehicles. Then, there's a hang glider, lol, pointless, no fun, gimmick.

The missions are all very similar, drive 10 minutes to go kill someone, blow a truck or deliver some documents. I think the developers have done it on purpose, how come the mission is always on the other end of the map, it makes you spend 90% of the driving. If the driving part was fun it wouldn't be so bad, but it's not, it doesn't even feel like driving, it feels like walking really fast with shaky camera, I think it's because the vehicles have only two velocities, you're stopped or moving, they forgot the acceleration part of driving.

Not sure if I consider the random missions a story, it makes little sense.
