The trouble with this game is, it has so much potential, and fails to achieve it. It gives you choices over which missions to do, and choices about how to do each mission, but the trouble is, these choices do not affect anything at all except for how far you have to drive (and in this game, there's a hell of a lot of driving to and from missions, which gets pretty dull). The first-person shooter aspect of the game isn't done all that well, as people have mentioned, enemies tend to soak up bullets, and whilst OK, the AI isn't anything special. You have to get guns from weapon shops, since enemy guns jam, which is tedious, as it involves MORE driving. The driving wouldn't be so bad if you weren't constantly being shot at by guards at guard-posts you had already captured. There is no motivation to progress in the game. You have the choice to do missions for "buddies", in return for which you get nothing, or the main story missions, which generally involve killing someone, or destroying something, because a psychopathic African warlord wants you to. In return, you get diamonds with which you can buy guns which you can use to do this more efficiently. If the missions were more consequential, if doing things for your buddies actually DID something, if there was less tedious driving, and if the combat was varied even just a LITTLE bit, this would be a good game. Sadly, none of this is the case - the game tries to do many things and does none of them well. Expand

Terrible, repetitive gameplay. The AI is absolutely moronic, they go from shooting you through trees at 2k's away to standing next to you doing nothing. Absolutely everybody shoots at you the moment they spot you (even guards at checkpoints when you drive up to them). I can't believe the reviewers liked this game so much. After wasting many hours playing it, I looked back and realized I had had very little fun. Oh, and of course I was stuck halfway through the game due to a glitch, and frankly I had (and still have) zero interest in starting all over again. This game is boring, boring, boring.

Graphics are good, sometimes bad. There are lots of weapons, which have no stopping/killing power. Most of them are too much alike. AI is stupid. It also doesn't spread enough and enemies are stupid and run into it. There are lots of bugs. Enemies under ground shooting you etc. Most of the missions are like this: You get a mission, your "buddy" calls you, if you accept, you get extra job, then do the original one, then save your "buddy" who has somehow got into trouble and then you are finished. All characters other than buddies are your enemies and shoot you. Even if you work for them. The more you play it, the less sense the story makes. You don't really have any freedom. Do a mission or do extra mission for bonus stuff. Ok.. I got bored of listing bad things. I can't really remember any good things other than ok graphics. Expand

The graphics are great. I live in south Africa and the similarities in enviroments between real life and the game are awesome, except for the fact that you go from jungle to savannah to desert in 10 km. I love getting stealthy and hearing the guys freak out, in afrikaans and ahosa and whatever, planning their moves audibly queing me to come out of hiding. Sometimes I even feel sorry for the guys. Fire and explosives are fun but sniping doesn't work so well. Also, how the flip can i poke a bullethole open right through my arm with my finger and the next moment the hole is gone? wtf. It's interesting though to see the world react ot your rising reputation level though. I play games for good storylines, and this ones SUCKS. The dialouge is rushed and bland, and you dont; get much choice in missions. I hate doing something that i know frikking the moment I get the mission I will be assasinated afterwards or everything will turn against me. Only part I enjoyed was killing the one person in the game I hate the most, only to find that that also lead to the situation getting more pear shaped. Buddy missions are made moral by the addition of invisible children. "There are soldiers near border, on other side of border is children, I wont let that happen" (from an old russian dude who has no objection to destabilizing a country by ruining it's food supply). Ugh. My second best buddy is my only true freind. I think Jack Carver is the Jackal..both have the same wannabe-badass tone of voice. Guard posts respawn too fast, I mean, how many people are there in a 50km radius of a war sodden country? Overall a great engine with a great concept but a story lacking in various areas, and immersion that gets emotionally and physically exhausting. Expand

One of the most frustrating games I've ever played, full of bugs, ridiculous AI, poor controls, over priced DLC, one of the worst online multiplayer experiences I've ever endured. Buy it if you wanna know what it feels like to be a mug.

NOT FUN! Missions and enemies are very reptitive. NO autosaving means often repeating lots of tedious content. I don't normally care to review games, but this game frustrated me and I feel like I wasted my money. Reason why this game 2 (and not 0) is because of great graphics, and multiplayer is decent. Custom maps could be interesting down the road.

Nice gameplay, but the most obnoxious DRM / copy protection I've ever seen. You had better do an orderly uninstall each time, and not have disk crashes because you only get 5 installs (must be online to install/uninstall, too). Repetitive missions that consist of endless travel followed by mediocre gun fights and then more travel, just to do practically the same mission again. stopping every minute to get out of your car and gun down enemies at a random checkpoint, just so they don't relentlessly pursue you and turn your car into a fireball. Weapons jam every other shot and make it a pain in firefights. The environment itself is vast and colorful yes, but lacks a sense of life. the only citizens you'll see in the game pre beggining cut scene are held up in little shacks awaiting passports delivered by you for some malaria medication. endless generic mercenaries that automatically think you're evil and will hunt you down. as for the"civil war," the only fighting you'll see that isn't you vs. a thousand mercs, are your occasional buddies you'll meet that help you out in missions, but actually just require more driving for completion of said mission. but what dissapoints me the most is just the lack story immersion and other game play elements. I wanted to fell like the guy i just killed would actually have an impact or do something, but everything is just so linear and generic. The graphics are very good. i particularly like the lighting and shadow effects, they are nothing revolutionary however. but no matter how good the visuals, good graphics cant cover up bad gameplay. If you go through a checkpoint, just plow on through, the only thing you will get is frustration when you drive back through it again and realize all the guards have respawned. The guns in this game are ridiculously underpowered, I takes 2 hits to the face on any enemy to kill them, and no I'm not kidding. If you do die, and believe me, you will, you don't go back to a save point, you have to sit and watch as some random guy drags your body around for a while, and shoots at the "bad guys", and then you can somehow get up, inject yourself with some needle and you magically get back up to full health. The problem is that it gets so annoying watching the scene with him dragging you around, and it just makes you want to smash your keyboard. I didn't quit here though, it's when I decided to go paragliding off a mountain, and landed in a river. The problem with this is, the river has no way out but to swim to one end or the other, and there were no boats anywhere in site, and the guy just swims so dang slow. I swam for about 20 minutes before I just got frustrated and uninstalled the game. Expand

Wanting to give it a try in hopes that it has half the fun of the original Far Cry, I borrow someones computer and wait 2 days for the download. The first 2 hours was decent, cinematic wise. After that everything is garbage; gameplay, AI and story. The gameplay is a repetitive notion of go to objective x and do y. There is no realism what so ever, it takes 2 shots to the head to kill anyone unless you are running around with a Barrett. The guns "rust", in a matter of minutes and constantly jam. Even the Springfield bolt-action rifle jams, colt .45 jams, and the first model fired 5000 rounds without incident, here an improved model jams after 2 mags. How the player "heals" themselves is seriously goofy, if only it were as easy as using a Gerber to pull bullets out of a wound. the AI is seriously flawed. There is little programing, all coded is the lines regarding how to interact with vehicles, an aim-bot and an objective to go strait towards the target. More than once Ive taken a dune buggy up a rocky outcropping, only to be followed by a single AI in a 2.5 ton truck who flips his vehicle. The AI has but one objective, follow and try to kill you. For gameplay, I expected destroyable buildings, all they have here is the breakable awning. This trainwreck is generously overrated by everyone, the critic scores are ROFL wrong. Someone must be playing SNES to say FC2 has any substance. This was a waste of money, better off going back to FC, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., CoD or HL2. Expand

Its easy and rather extensive. Its final point goes to its graphics, which are good, but not great. Shading and vegetation are done well. But the people kind of look comical at any distance farther than 10 feet (I have settings maxed out, i just dont have antialising turned on because im using my tv, helps a little, its not my computer). Buildings are ok. The fire effect of burning grass and what not was a good idea, but not everything burns. Now to the game. The guns jam continously, not to mention a lack of actual variety in what you can choose. Sounds are odd to say the least. AI is horrid. They can see you from 2 miles away with ease, even tho you cant see out from the bush your in. Alert one guy who you killed silently in a building, and the whole area comes after you. Every mission is drive from point A, to point B which is always on the other side of the map... Plus, there whole go anywhere do whatever is a lie, you cant go anywhere, you can pretty much go straight in 10 mile area until the rest of the map is unlocked or open, whatever you like to call it (little exaggeration, but its still close, which is pathetic). While driving across the map, going as slow as possible in any veichle you get (your car says 60mph, theres no difference between 20 and 60... rediculous), enemies will continuously attack you, both sides, for just being alive! Isn't that fun! And once you leave out of there site... BOOM! There back. Its actual funny, because so much time is wasted trying to fight. If you just drive past, minding your own business, two or 3 will hop in a car and come after you. That car will respawn soon enough too, no worries. You can try walking around to get to your objective to not alert people, good luck. It'll probably take you 4 hours, while still alerting everybody known to exsistance within the game. Conclusion... While there seemed to be ideas there, nothing was done to actually capitalize on them, nor follow through and make sure this was at all enjoyable or well done. AI is reminisant to the days of pathetic AI earlier this decade. Half Life 1 had better. That was released in 98 I believe. 10 years later FC2 couldn't create better or equal AI? Sad... Multiplayer is just not fun. You can scan (withouth zooming in) back and forth until a name tag appears in a bunch of foliage and you've found a guy. rediculous. Gun choices in Multi are slim, diamond system is just odd. Stay away... far far away from this. There are better games out there, even the newly released $20 ones, I'm sure can kick the crap out of this. How in the right mind did so many "critics" give this game such high scores, I'll never know. But these days, it just seems like more and more games that aren't good keep getting high reviews. Let the conspiracy theories continue. Expand

Far Cry 2 is a beautiful, but mediocre game. The comparisons to Assassin's Creed are appropriate in that there is an amazing world for you to get bored in quickly. The respawning checkpoints and long travel times make the game feel so repetitive. With Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead being released at around the same time you could get a lot more for your money. Far Cry 2 fails to live up to its predecessor, though some of its graphics occasionally are on par, which is sad given that the original came out nearly 5 years ago. I've been a fan of Far Cry since its inception. The open-ended play of the original was unique (still is) and addicting. I liked the island themes; the 1st-to-3rd person ability; the humor; the story; the game play; the maps; ability to carry all weapons; the absence of malaria or any annoying illness (what's with that?); the color and terrain (greens and blues instead of brown I've been a fan of Far Cry since its inception. And talk about boring! What exactly is compelling about driving in Africa? That's what you do most of the time. Did the programmers think the tropical islands were just too pretty so they put us in one of the ugliest places on Earth? Was the original humor too campy so they made this game dreadfully serious? The one and only thing that reminded me of the original was the fact that I could only run about 10 yards before getting worn out (crappy) but at least the original didn't blur my vision each time. It's all been said. This game is awful. I was a huge farcry fan, to the point I played it 4 times over beginning to end. This one is just terrible for all the reasons already mentioned. I bought the game 1 day ago and I already want to return it. I guess I'll sell it to someone who cares more about graphics, monotony, and redundancy than story, gameplay, and AI.

I did avoid side missions like the weapons guy and buddy missions because they were the same old but without the interesting locations, rather forcing you to traipse around the countryside. Buddy missions in particular felt like irritating strap-ons to the main mission, basically "finish the story mission then come save my ass". No thank you. My play style was to sneak about and snipe then wait for the enemy to come to me - if you enjoy skulking and sniping then you may well have some fun with this game. I also tended to largely avoid the roadblocks by using buses to insta-travel as well as using the map to go cross country via shortcuts that seem to be built into the game for that purpose. As an aside it should be noted that the actual plot is spectacularly retarded and if I had more of a choice I would have chosen to attack both the APR and UFLL. I myself liked to move at night and scout the checkpoints from a distance. Also the rivers will be pretty easy to travel. Guns will jam and even break, but that's why you can buy your own weapons and your cases for those. That way you can have a new (and even different) weapon available in every safehouse you've unlocked. If you're looking for relatives of Far Cry, this game isn't for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking a way to see Africa like in no other game, and having fun, I'd say you're good to go. This could be fun enough, but the gameplay mechanics are not enjoyable. The AI can see you through trees and the exclusion of the ability to lean makes firefights a chore in an otherwise semi-realism based FPS. The map/binocular interface is poorly planned, as your map covers up your line of sight but must be up in order to use the telescope thing. It makes scouting locations a hassle. The map is huge, but you have to drive (or walk) everywhere you go, which takes a long time, not to mention that everyone you meet is hostile, even the civilians driving cars will get out to shoot at you. On your way to wherever it is you have to go you will run into 3 or 4 "guard posts" where 5 or 6 guys will shoot at you and get in their jeeps to follow you. Every time you want to go somewhere, be it for a mission or just for fun, you will run into this. The missions are incredibly repetitive and generally consist of "go here, blow this up/kill this guy , leave" But whatever you have to blow up/kill is generally guarded by 20 or 30 men. The trailers might lead you to believe that you can avoid these guys with stealth, but that isn't remotely true. Once you kill one person, even with a suppressed weapon, the entire camp knows exactly where you are and opens fire on you. Even through walls. This is around the point where your gun decides to jam or you get really sick with malaria (I forgot to mention, you get these malaria attacks throughout the game where your screen goes greenish and you have to take pills) which makes it very difficult to fight back. The game has a "buddy" system where you have friends that can help you out. Unfortunately buddy AI is somewhere between brain dead and retarded so they often get themselves critically injured. When your buddy is critically injured you have to either sacrifice a syrette (a syringe with magical healing potion) or shoot them (they never come back) which gets incredibly annoying, especially when you've used all your syrettes to heal after you were shot while unjamming your weapon. If you would like to fight during the night rather than the day you have to go out and find a "safe house" where you can sleep, which gets obnoxious when trying to plan a raid. And even though the gameplay is awful, maybe it would be worth it if the story was amazing, there is no story (well, there is, but it's really thin) the idea is you're in a country with 2 warring factions and they give you missions so you can get diamonds ($) so you can buy guns so you can do more missions. There's also this guys called the jackal who leaves tapes around so you can hear how sick and twisted he is, you're on a mission throughout the game to kill this guy and I figure at the end of the game you get to kill him, but I doubt I'll ever finish it because it's miserable to play. Different developer, different characters, different weapons, different content, and a different engine. I hate this game but forced myself to play completely through it. AI: Likes to get shot while driving cars, will relentlessly follow you until they are dead. Will show blood and then a few seconds later like a bad Uwe Bowl movie will react to being shot. This is quite comical as they will pick a random direction to jump backwards into to die and ultimately looks like bad acting. Story: Your in Africa and everyone wants to shoot you. You meet people who like making you drive endlessly for ridiculously long periods of time, eventually you get sick of barking like a dog for them and you WILL kill them. A new guy will then replace the last guy you killed who will suffer the same fate. You rescue people throughout the game and are rewarded by them by extending your missions and having you drive even further, they too die but only occasionally do you get to be the one to pull the trigger. In the console ports you are given special abilities, in this game you are given malaria... This is annoying as you need medication throughout the game, to get this you have to drive to town to pick up passports then you have to drive an average of 20 minutes to another location to pick up 1 - 2 pill. This is not remotely fun. Physics: My god bad, a two car collision on a Q6600 6gb DDR2 800, Geforce 8800GTS 640 will reduce the frame rate to 0.1fps from 60. This is unforgivable. Graphics: Very good, things look very realistic. Are however quite dull and lack color and variety. Environment: Rivers are lifeless, forests are lifeless but ironically the deserts have both zebras and ox. There are occasionally insects. Weapons: Good variety, ultimate I hate all of them. You have to constantly replace guns as they frequently. Accuracy sucks on all of them, machine guns are honestly less effective then the pistols and constantly want to fire in the air and will not let you counteract that movement. To get weapons that will jam slightly less often you have to complete extra missions to unlock weapons you can buy. There are very few weapon locations and they are very far away from any mission. Transportation: This absolutely ruins this game, nothing about it is even remotely fun. You drive around and get shot at frequently which forces you to get out of the car and fix your vehicle while being shot at. If you accidentally get to the edge of the map your car will be taken from you and you will be forced to walk potentially kilometers to the nearest road. Missions will force you to go to the far edges of the map EVERY time and then return to the center EVERY time. We get it, it's big. Gliders will result in your death, do not use these. Larger boats WILL get suck and you WILL have to swim far, avoid these also. They have 5 bus terminals in each map strategically placed as far away from any mission as possible still, they can save time. Conclusion: This entire game felt like work, I just hate it. Do not buy this game, do not endorse this crap. Expand

The game is boring, graphics are awful and it seems this is mostly because they've decided to switch the engine from crytek to their own in house crap to save money.

I'll mention those right off the bat: (1) the lack of civilians and (2) the lack of skirmishes between the UFLL and APR throughout the countryside. Honestly, including these 2 aspects would make the game feel complete, even if the story or reputation system were not fully fleshed out. Readers, please think about these points. If FC2 included NPCs that did not attack you upon sight, such as the bus/taxi drivers (where did that guy at the beginning go? did he book for another country right after dropping you off in Pala?), the world would feel much more multi-dimensional. Instead, after hours of gameplay, the fact that EVERYONE (ok, just about everyone) attacks you becomes rather...goofy. Also, where the hell are the battles between the UFLL and APR? Again, it seems like its you vs. Africa and that makes FC2 feel more like any other FPS rather than a living microcosm. Sure, cease fires in the city makes sense, but have these factions just drawn a border across the map that they all abide by? I would love if an NPC pointed its firearm at someone besides me! So why the 8/10? Partially because the graphics, although not as realistic per say as Crysis, just work. The motion blur, fire, exaggerated explosions, and model animations are top notch. But mainly, regardless of the 2 above mentioned downfalls, weak MAIN story, and repetitiveness, the gameplay is THE BEST AMONG ANY FPS. FC2 plays like an improved COD4. Shooting weapons feels amazingly visceral, bullet penetrations is incredible, fire prorogation is actually very tactical, and, all in all, the games just immerses you in the game world. Expand

Your missions require you to drive (or bus!) all over the map, which by itself is alright, but once you take into account the fact that every ten seconds you're getting attacked by a random patrol jeep or clearing yet another road block, the game slows to a grind. The missions are essentially the same thing over and over, so when you think about the fact that you have to battle your way to each generic mission in a story you don't really care about through several uninteresting fights at forty or fifty thousand guard posts along the way, the game quickly loses it's sheen. I think the main problem is that the developers tried to combine a sand box style game with straight forward shooter elements. In a shooter, constant combat is exactly what you want, but in a sandbox game, it's nice to be able to explore or travel to and from missions without getting attacked or feeling like you have to creep along the road and around each outpost. This game is not worth the time or the money. I would recommend passing it up for a legitimate title. Expand

It seems to me the people who are giving the game bad reviews are trying to play an open world game in a linear style... in that they think they must kill every bad guy they see to progress. Maybe Ubisoft should have emphasised the different style of game in there marketing more to make people understand... once you understand this you tend to be a bit more cunning, using the rivers, driving across plains, and simply running through gaurd posts in your jeep, jumping on the gun to stop anyone in vehicles following you. They could have varied the mission a little more though - especially the "destroy the arms convoy" to gain new weapons... they're very samey... but as you get new weapons and experiment with how you approach missions, you can get creative in a way that you just can't seem to in linear shooters. Graphics are amazing - best I've ever seen I think, but also because of the atmosphere... it really does feel like you're in an African country got to hell. What's more it runs far better than Crysis - very smooth on high quality settings whereas the exact same rig playing Crysis will only get me medium settings for a slightly slower framerate. My only real gripe is the driving... I seem to spend 2/3 of the game driving somewhere... yeah there's a bus system, but I wish it had the quick travel system of fallout 3... even more bus stations would do it though. Expand

Once I realised it, I've stopped to care about bad guys shooting at me. What's the point in fighting anyone, if you know that they will respawn very shortly anyway?? Enemy respawns work great in rpgs, l4d and in many other games, but in FC2 those are just out of place and badly thought through. 2. Very stupid and unfair AI. Once you shoot at someone, everyone knows exactly where you're. Hell, you don't even have to shoot, quietly kill a lone guy with your machete while no one is around and you will have all neighborhood troops rushing to your position. Collective consciousness ftw... Also everyone whom you encounter on your way through the land will be trying to kill you :/ 3. Toy guns. Devs talked about realism in every part of FC2, but couldn't even get the basics like the guns done right...:/ Among other things, it takes almost a whole mag to kill a guy who's running around just in his T-shirt. Mounted MGs seem to shoot rubber bullets as well. (maybe the respawns would have been half so bad, if you could actually take down your enemies with 3-5 bullets) 4. Generic and repetitive missions. i guess this one is self explanatory, nuff said. 5. Driving from mission to mission gets old and boring very fast. Those were the major things that i didn't like. I left out other issues with malaria, lack of popper interaction with the game world and its characters, dull story & etc. Also the absence of crocs or any life in the water was kinda disappointing, since the game features so many large areas with water (which i was avoiding in the beginning of the game like stupid :/). IMHO except pretty graphics and sound, this game doesn't have very much to offer to fps fans. The landscape looks great, but you'll soon find it tiresome, as areas you just cleared, seemed to be instantly teaming with the same guys again, after returning within seconds. Plus when getting missions, they inevitably end up being the other side of the map, meaning long and repetitive trips. Want to get up that small hill to shoot with your sniper? Well no you can't, your character seems unable to climb the slightest hill and gets stopped in his tracks by small logs etc. So the open landscape you see, is actually very limited. The weapon system. It seems they have decided not to let you chose what weapons you would like to carry. Sure you can carry different weapons, but if you want to carry say a sniper rifle and an assault rifle, forget it. But at the same time they let you carry a sniper and an LMG???? Then there's the enemies you meet. Each and everyone of them has X-ray eyes. Not only do they know exactly where you are, but can see you through certain rocks and deep foliage. They know you are coming before you do, has to be the worst AI I've seen in a while. Stealth on this game is not and option, because even with the stealth weapons, the enemies know your position right away. It can be the middle of the night, and out of no where a guy on another part of the map starts shelling you, or a sniper the other side of a bunch of trees, starts shooting you. I say this because it is obvious that each and every element was executed remarkably by the artists, programmers and animators. So, to the Lead Designer, Creative Director or CEO, remember that fun is empowering a player to do things they could only do in their dreams. When I played this game I felt like the sick gimp with a malfunctioning water pistol. Make it fun instead. Expand

Ubisoft is consistently making very pretty games that are failing on the game play front. The graphics are not bad, they make up for lower-poly models (console port) with lovely DX10 shaders. Likewise the fire propagation and realistic day-night cycle is wonderfully done, and capturing the sense of Africa is absolutely spot-on (Lived there for 14 years). Also Combat is also done well, and Ubisoft is consistently making very pretty games that are failing on the game play front. Also Combat is also done well, and the jamming and healing animations are pretty facking sweet. Otherwise, everything else just screams port. The story has some thought in it, but feels thrown together with the unnaturally sped-up dialogue. The open world is fun, until you realize that you'll be shooting through the same checkpoints quite literally hundreds of times, making combat extraordinarily repetitive. The fabled destructability is so-so, nowhere near the level you'll see in Crysis (again, console port). There are factions, but they're not tied to any checkpoints... so the story ends up doing one factions missions until finished, then repeat ad nauseum. Ubisoft evidently tried to add some staying power with GTA-esque collectibles and small side missions, although they are no where near the quality shown in GTA. Unlocking guns means doing the exact same mission 8 times, albeit in different parts of the map. Multiplayer is practically a joke, the interface was obviously designed for the console community. And if multiplayer is a joke, who will bother with the map editor no matter how well it has been done? In conclusion, Far Cry 2 was a fun experiment in open-world first person shooters but reeks firmly of being thought out for console, and then brought over to the PC for maximized profits. Expand

Most players didn't like this game due to the need of advanced PC gamer skills. Bots has the ability of tracking your trails, they will find your hiding place if you don't get inside a vehicle and speed off.

I think there are 8 smaller bars in the health bar. If a burst of shots hitted you and it only cost 1 bar, but it removed 2 bars in the health bar before it “regen” 1 bar back so it has 6 bars left at first, then back to 7 bars as long as you takes cover and avoid getting shot. In another word, actual damage is 10%, but it take away 20% right away, then soon “refund” the 10% overcharged!
Some shots only graves your skins, those shots are usually far distanced shots (near misses), your health bar dropped a little bit before it recharge back to the fullest as long as you takes cover & avoid getting hit more.

What makes the game worth playing is simply the stunning environments. The developers smoothly mixed together lush jungles, grasslands, and some deserts that make trekking through FC2 endlessly fun. Another thing that never gets old is setting the world on fire, which creates interesting gameplay tactics and challenges. I also found the driving and especially the boating to be very enjoyable, particularly when combined with the fun of hunting down the diamond caches (ignoring the silliness of people leaving diamonds lying in briefcases around the world and you being the only one that can find them). The combat is also pretty good, although I tended to favor the mounted weapons a bit too much. But why wouldn't you? The mounted 50cal and grenade launcher (with unlimited ammo) are the most badass weapons in the game. One thing I didn't care much for was the weapon loadout system, which forces weapons into three types, of which you can only have one of each. I felt like this shut me out from being able to use some weapon loadouts like a sniper rifle plus an assault rifle. Another thing I didn't like was the oft-maligned instant respawning of enemies at checkpoints, which was really bothersome at first when your weapons are fairly weak and you don't have many syringes. Later on, the respawning is only a slight nuisance, however. The worst thing about this game is the story, or the nonexistence of a story. It doesn't make any sense ever. You're asked to do some rather vile things to people with little justification while neither of the two factions seem to care whether you've screwed them over in the past. Likewise, no one you encounter out in the world is friendly, no matter if you've helped their faction in the past. But if you like adventuring through the wild with frequent shootouts, Far Cry 2 is a good choice. Expand

Who doesn't like using their multi-tool to extract bullets from their leg while fixing their broken shotgun by pounding on it? The situations and dialogue are probably not that realistic, but the paranoid style of it is great, rather unique. The reason I like Far Cry 2 as a gamer is because it carries ideals that are notably absent from most multi-platform releases; an interesting variation on level structure and environment for what is essentially a CoD-ish shooter. Definitely NOT Crysis, not crafted as skillfully (the levels never reach the level of scope as the more focused chapter-based approach of Crysis does), but is nevertheless much larger - and although some areas are boxy, other areas (e.g. lake in 1st half) have a great, natural presentation when you come across them. The environment doesn't feel as random as F:NV or Oblivion, most of it feels deliberately constructed. I think with a few basic changes, more incentive to run around the levels (see: GTA, Fallout, etc), the Far Cry 2 template could go from "cool / intriguing" to "really fun to play". At times the game is gorgeous, not as technically varied as Crysis, but that sun-blasted hard-shadowed plastic look really kills it in the dense jungles and muddy river canyons. Expand

Other than repetitiveness, the next big issue for me is the enemies instantly respawning when you're out of view. It's annoying to drive by, clear out an outpost, come back by the same outpost a few minutes after completing the objective and having to clear it out again.

The game does do things right however to warrant a purchase for $25 at the most. For one, the gunplay and shooting mechanics are top notch and killing is very satisfying. Second, there are loads of guns from shotguns to sniper rifles to crossbows with exploding arrows. It makes the game feel less repetitive and more fun to mix up your approach to combat whether it be a stealthy sniper or a rambo style where you charge in a base guns ablaze. I say give it a buy if you can find it for around $25 or less because unless you REALLY love the game's combat and can stand doing the same thing over and over, you probably won't be finishing the singleplayer.

I read the negative and positive reviews but shrugged off the negative because EVERY game has some bad reviews right? Well upon starting the game I was blown away! It was awesome, some specifics (spoiler) like fixing cars, jumping into the gunner seat of a car, and seeing a gun shop with unlock able weapons??? Sounds like a win to me! So I played the game, decided to do some weapon unlocks first as I wanted some bad ass stuff. So I did it, go to this point and destroy the convoy, check! went back and got my just reward. Went to another weapon dealer and took his quest to unlock different weapons.... go to this point and destroy the convoy... ok the guns are enticing enough to do it so I did. Did a main mish quest to try to liven up the game, go here and INSERT ONE(destroy, capture, free from captivity) this objective and get paid. So I did it and the first few were fun but then they ask you to do THE SAME THING, OVER AND OVER. Different places, different "objectives", you do the same thing. Ok so to sum up the rant: The main quests are very redundant, the gun quests (only way to unlock guns) are all EXACTLY THE SAME THING, not even a different story. Basically every single quest you take from any source anywhere in this game goes like this: take quest, drive 10 mins stopping every 2 or 3 mins to wipe out a "guard post" complete mish. Take next mish. That system right there is problem number 1. Number 2 is another HUGE gameplay problem, as seen in some of the other negative posts (RichardH goes into more detail) The guards at a guard post are INFINITE. You kill them, drive away and instantly there are the same number back! Its not even fun to kill them its just **** annoying, seriously! So OK its not bad enough that I have to drive across the stupid map to do a mish that would be just as "fulfilling" if it was half the distance but I have to stop to clear out the same guard posts on the same road I came down 5 mins ago! And ANOTHER thing, there is no fast travel, you can take a bus that takes you to 1 of 4 places on the outskirts of a map but you have to board the bus at one of those 4 stops so it doesn't help at all. And EVERY, AND I MEAN EVERY mission is on the opposite end of the map. Another thing I was dissapointed in this game was there is nothing to be done to the guns once you get them. There are A FEW guns that have things like a silencer, but you cant choose what you want to put on what or anything its all pre-done and you have 0 options, idk about you but I like options. Now small problems that are VERY frustrating: when you try to revive a friend you have to feel him up first and it takes a solid 10 seconds to revive someone when ultimately you do nothing more than stick him with a needle, seriously if your in the middle of a fight you cant revive anyone because you get shot up. It should take a second or two at most. Also on the same subject when someone comes to revive you, say you accidentally kill yourself (I did it jumping off a bridge into what I thought was deep water to get a chest) the team mate still has the same animation as doing it under fire and it takes FOREVER. Long story short, Im sorry guys as much promise as this game has I couldn't recommend it to anyone, Im not even happy with it for the $5 i wasted on it. Its too redundant, too fake (infinite enemy etc), too slow, and frankly boring. Idk how this game is a sequel if the first one is anything like this im not sure how they grossed enough to make this. The only reason it gets a 3 is because of the unique things it brings to the table (however annoying then get within the hour). Expand

For instance, the majority of the game is spent driving around from one objective to the other. Even if you're the most patient person in the world, the amount of driving is going to really grind on you eventually. Furthermore, the enemy variety in the game is basically non-existent, you're going to face the same AK toting enemies over and over for the entire play-through. Also, the enemies themselves possess amazing accuracy and self-awareness, to the point that simply breathing in their direction means that every one of them in the nearby radius will instantly know your position.

Far Cry isn't a bad game, it's quite fun in short stints. But it's just let down by the aforementioned AI problems and broken stealth game-play. Far Cry 2 takes place in a random "African" nation where you go around trying to find malaria pills and try to get to the bottom of some conspiracy or another.

In place of the linear nature of Far Cry 1, FC2 throws you into a large world where you basically have free reign to go wherever you want, which is a welcome change.

Positives: Visually great, the graphics are nice.
    Nice open world to explore.
    gunplay is pretty fun.

Negatives: Guns have condition, and they have the reliability of an original M16 rifle in the deep jungle, usually, you can only put through a couple hundred rounds before most guns are basically completely useless.
Respawning enemies, they respawn every couple minutes, meaning you MUST fight whenever you want to go anywhere at all.
    Mostly pointless story.
90% of the guns you have are left-handed

In general, its a "meh" game that will keep you entertained for a while, though its not nearly as satisfying to play compared to the 3rd game in the series.

Timed quests are ok, if used sparingly and where a time element makes sense, but the constant stress of time running out for something completely irrelevant to your goals is a poor substitute for properly orchestrated suspense. But worst of all, it scuttles the one thing that makes this game stand out for the crowd: the joy of free exploration. You just can't enjoy that with this idiotic gimmick hanging over your head. A patch that does away with the ball and chain of malaria would turn this game from a frustrating curiosity to a memorable classic. Another unpleasant element is the way vehicles are driven. The gunplay is golden, the graphics are amazing, the story and dialogue are horrible, the respawn times...infuriating. More importantly, it has nowhere near as many bugs as something like "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl," a title that bears many similarities. Add to the roughly 25 hour single-player campaign a remarkably easy-to-use map creation tool and a full multiplayer suite, and you've got one of the most complete overall gaming packages of the year, as well as one of the most ambitious.
