In order to fulfil your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit your their weaknesses, and neutralize their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force. Real-time story telling, systemic auto-healing, minimal in-game interface are just few of the features that make you feel the tension of being alone against barbarous warlords that threaten thousands of innocent lives. Choose from a wide range of weapons to make your way to your primary target. Meet the fight head-on with your machine-gun, go berserk with your machete or make stealth kills as a Sniper. If you feel that the atmosphere is not warm enough, light up your flamethrower and let your enemies and everything around them feel the heat. [Ubisoft] Expand

The unique setting, brilliant AI and palpable atmosphere, make Far Cry 2 a quintessential PC gaming experience. [Dec 2008, p.63]
  2. After playing Far Cry 2, I'm simply unable to go back to straight and simple first-person shooters. This game has executed my expectations. [Nov 2008, p.62]

Unusual in that a first person shooter shows you the fictitious African country where real crimes against the civil population are fought in the name of profit. An intense experience in all aspects. [Nov 2008]
  4. It has its shortcomings, but it still makes its mark as one of the best releases of the year, at this point. The graphics and setting alone make it a real stand-out, and I like the fact that Ubisoft tried to go after something a bit more unique in a genre that is known for rampant replication.

Combat is thrilling – each weapon packing a solid, vicious blast; movement suggesting heft and momentum. [Dec 2008, p.80]
  6. Visually impressive and ambitious but ultimately falls short of the hype. Attempts very hard to immerse you in a realistic sandbox world but fails to be anything but a simple, repetitive shooter. Driving across beautiful but lifeless world while fighting infinitely respawning enemies to complete unimaginative missions for people who all try to kill you can be summed up as beautiful but disappointing.
  7. In 2007, Ubisoft sent to Africa a whole team of Far Cry 2 developers so they could record sounds, take pictures and soak in the spirit of "Heart of Darkness". Judging by the promotional videos, the guys had the time of their lives. It's a pity that the game fails to convey even the tiniest fracture of their emotions.

It deserves an 8.7 IMO, because this game is amazing and was way ahead of its time. The fire spreads, which means that if you need to retreat, use molotovs, flame throwers, or the flare gun and create a fire boundary to keep your enemies at bay. Also, enemies are extremely realistic. If you surprise them they jump back, if they're on the ground they moan and scream, if they need help they call their friend's names. The driving is just what it should be. Vehicles steer nicely and are easy to drive. The vehicles are what a poor African country would have (old cars, buggies with a place for gunners, heavy assault trucks, ammo trucks, ATV's, and rare jeeps). The towns may not be what you expect; they have no civilians and look extremely poor. The missions are good and the game really creates a sense of "you're in it for the money, nothing else." This is a great game, and I hope you get it! Expand

This game is great. I dont know whats all the hoopla about the DRM problems but if you buy the game on steam, you have no DRM problems. Sure This game is great. What a disappointment. This is a by-the-numbers FPS that does not deserve the Far Cry label. The AI is dreadful (you know exactly what the What a disappointment. This is a by-the-numbers FPS that does not deserve the Far Cry label. The AI is dreadful (you know exactly what the bad guys are going to do several seconds before they even move), the visuals are dull and lifeless (endless brown sand - remember the stunning visuals of Far Cry?), the missions are disgracefully repetitive (find a truck that drives in cicles on the map, blow it up, or find some rebel leader and kill him), over and over and over... weapons that spontaneously rust from one shot to the next (but don't worry, the gun shop has an infinite supply), enemies that respawn with no apparent justification, arbitrary rules governing what you can and can't carry, endless hours of driving back and forth through featureless terrain, and of course everyone (and I mean everyone) you meet will immediately go into a frenzy and try and kill you, even punters in family cars. Suspension of disbelief? Immersion? Forget it. Expand

It's GTA 2 rehashed with better graphics except you only get Jeeps and Pintos as your vehicles of choice. The weapons are fun for a while but blow up in your hands while you are killing your thousandth mercenary. The quests suck and are completely unimaginative. The story sucks because it's completely unengaging...not worth suffering of hours and hours of boredom and repetition to actually see what happens. The characters seemed cool at first but then they end up falling into the 'repetitive' category. THIS GAME IS SIMPLY A 'SEQUEL' MEANT TO FLEECE FPS JUNKIES OF CASH AND LAUGH IN YOUR FACE WHILE UBISOFT RAKES IT IN. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE! DON'T LET UBISOFT MAKE YOU THEIR BITCH! Expand

For all the site admin bitch about user ballot-stuffing, it seems they're content to let PC Gamer do it. Probably because PC Gamer pays for the space and we don't.
