An impressive accomplishment whose size and depth is a testament to wargaming's ability to bring history to life. [April 2011, p.76]

There are not as many games like this as there used to be, and hardly any that have the kind scope on display in War in the East. It is a good, very detailed example of the classic hex-based operational wargame.

This game looks daunting, but much like a long book, you are rewarded if you just plow through the first few times. This is a result of how great the game, not a problem with the game. If you are looking for call of duty or angry birds this is NOT it. If you are looking for the best computer implementation of a WWII strategy game at the divisional level showing an entire theater of operation, this is it. High levels of detail, but doesn't really force micromanagement. To best experience the game, dive into the Forums and discussions and read some AAR's. This game rewards you highly for your investment, but you DO NEED TO MAKE AN INVESTMENT IN TIME. Awesome. Expand

Game has many shortcomings - broken logistics, poor combat mechanics and air-warfare, managing commanders and command structure isn't well though off either, but I have played this game for over year, most of the days spending around 2h moving counters forward and backwards and most of the times it was great fun. For me, without doubt it is best wargame based on events on Eastern Front. Great way of wasting time :) Collapse

While this game may scare a lot of newer players away, it shouldn't. It can be learned in 15 minutes, but is deep enough that even after several hundred hours of playing, you will still learn new things. Strong support from the developers as they continue to try to balance what must be a near impossible feat, every person (squad level), tank, plane, and leader of the greatest conflict in history.
