  1. It’s mostly fun to play. It takes 50-100 hours to go through the game once, and I could see playing a second or third time since the quests change slightly depending on the camp you choose to join.
  2. With a novel, large and intricate set of societies, coupled with excellent graphics and sound, Gothic becomes one of the most immersive and believable single-play adventure/RPGs ever.
  3. The 3D engine looks unbelievably good! The surroundings are impeccable, and bear a surreal and depressive atmosphere. All the objects and buildings look just as great.
  4. This title is a truly epic quest with excellent replayability. This game got under my skin so bad that I remember getting out of bed at 2:00am and going downstairs to play it.

Decent graphics and a well-developed storyline. It also has a great amount of replayability, as each time through the game could yield different experiences with different choices.
  6. While it does last (and there is plenty of replay value), it will provide most gamers with an experience even more enjoyable than kicking back and smoking a pound of grade A swampweed.
  7. The dark and mature theme gave this game a distinctive feel and the graphics take the player in deep within the prison world.
  8. 83
The environment, the quests, and the huge world you're in overcomes some of the technical issues with the game.
  9. There are some deficiencies in this game – most notably, how to equip a weapon without jumping through all the hoops the game has to offer.
  10. And though it has an unusual and open-ended story, lots of spoken dialogue, and a substantial amount of gameplay, it also has frustrating action sequences and some noticeable technical problems.
  11. One of the best role-playing games of 2001. With just a few tweaks, Piranha Bytes could have given us one of the best role-playing games of all time.
  12. Elaborate story, dialogue, and characterization draw you into one of the most believable role-playing game worlds ever created.
  13. It was originally conceived for the keyboard only, and though you can reconfigure its commands, the game isn't very mouse friendly. [Mar 2002, p.61]
  14. If you can get past the absurd control hurdle and the fact that the beginning is the best part of the game..., Gothic is a satisfying RPG to fiddle with. [Apr 2002, p.92]

  1. How the hell does this game have such a low score. I'm a big fan of open-world RPG games, and this game is the definition of what I find good in a game. Admittedly, it does take an hour or two before you really sink into the world and the story, but once you reach that point, and you've gotten used to the combat system, the game doesn't let you go. The world is one of the most well-designed worlds from almost any game I've ever played. Play it! Full Review »
  2. Strange thing is: This game had a user rating of about 8.8- 9.2 some months ago! If you look at the reviews you will notice that written reviews are almost all very positive.
But there seem to be many people who dislike the game but didnt't tell us why.
And believe me: these negative ratings were not there half a year ago. My personal conclusion is: THE RATING IS MANIPULATED by haters/ other developers etc...

This makes me sad because Gothic and Gothic II are masterpieces of game experience and one of my favourite games of all time!

Give the game 20 mins and you have learnt the controls. Great game Better than Morrowind, Better than Oblvion and the AI is brilliant and the way the stories go around as you make decisions that affect characters and the world is amazing! This game has to be played by all RPG publishers and then they can copy the game AI and the way the world reactes to you. If they do then we have a lot of great RPG's coming our way, Athough I ask this of every publisher....Please do more genres, Westen, Detective, even my girlfirend says When Harry Met Sally could be a RPG! And I agree. Take a chance and PC gaming WILL go mainstream! Full Review »
