  1. It was a fairly fun game for about the first three to four missions.
  2. An average RTS game that had the potential to be more. Only get this game if you were fans of the previous game then you might enjoy this; otherwise it would be best to wait until some of the more promising RTS games come out later this year.

    It has a unique troop creation system that lets players build exactly the types of armies they want and it doesn't look that bad either. But the pathing problems and the lack of excitement at the tactical level don't provide a strong enough framework for the good parts of the game to really shine through.
  4. If the same level of polish afforded to the visual areas of the game was put into the play mechanics, World Forge could have had a strong RTS game on their hands. Instead they delivered a mediocre experience with a few good ideas that's ultimately bogged down by a mess of technical issues.
  5. Unless you're interested in overly fussy, old-fashioned RTS gaming, give Great War Nations: The Spartans a pass.
  6. All in all, Great War Nations: The Spartans is just such a generic game that it’s hard to recommend at all.

  8. I really think there is a market for old school strategy games with modern graphics, but these games still have to emphasize fun over tedium. If you’re going to make a game about great historical warriors and legendary battles, make sure your players can quickly join the thick of the fight.

    Great War Nations might appeal to those new to the genre, but strategy vets will want to "erase this memory of Sparta from the histories."
  11. This is a bad RTS and a bad bargain. Not only have things not improved from Ancient Wars: Sparta, things have barely changed at all. There are a few neat ideas in this template, but none are carried far enough to count as truly interesting and all are saddled by poor technique.

    Great War Nations: The Spartans is a fairly basic real time strategy game that features a couple of novel gameplay ideas, solid graphics, OK sound, and a thin story. Gameplay tends to be slow, with combat changing the player's fortune rather quickly. Players can design their own units using a palette of weapons and armor collected and/or researched, but the collection of the components, the number of them, and the relative lack of healing units ensure a fairly tedious cycle of build -> combat -> build again. Heroes are merely super-powered infantry without much in the way of strategic abilities nor even token personalities, which was a disappointment for me.

    All in all, it's an 'OK' budget game by a budget studio, but don't expect the few novel ideas in the game to carry the day. Experienced strategy gamers will certainly be disappointed and strategy beginners are better served by higher quality titles even if they aren't quite as cheap.
