A decent expansion to a good series. Innovative setting or exciting plot has not been Nival’s strong side previously, and Tribes of the East is not an exception. It however is more enjoyable gaming for the warlord who hasn’t yet got his fill of the original game, with familiar mechanics and a few new additions to make it feel fresh enough. Some scenarios feel a bit too restrictive at times, a trait familiar from the earlier games too, but not so much as to take much fun out of the game. Addition of campaign editor is good news, but how the community makes use of it remains to be seen. [Jan 2008]
Tribes of the East is easy to recommend to players who missed the core game and want to check out what Heroes of Might & Magic is all about. The stand alone nature of the pack and its thirty-dollar price tag makes it an easy buy.

Excellent expansion for the main game.
I loved Heroes of Might and Magic V. I tried the earlier installments before, but never understood the game and its mechanics. For some reason, HOMM V was a lot more accessible and easier to understand.
The mechanics in HOMM V are relatively simple. You explore a map, with various resources, towns, small buildings and upgrades, to increase your strength, stats and army. On the map, different units are stationed, some friendly and ready to join you, but most of them are hostile. You fight them to earn XP, level up and unlock more skills. The goal of each map varies from scenario to scenario but mostly includes the conquering of a town or gate to win. Some scenarios are timed, adding to the challenge.
After the somewhat average expansion Hammers of Fate, I played the second and last expansion Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East. Immediately I was in love with the new campaign, new playable race and the third (optional) evolution of every race in the game.
In Tribes of the East, you can now play as the Orcs. In true Orc fashion, they are savage, brutal and strong, and their new bloodlust mechanics in Heroes V is an important asset in their fighting strategy. I also really liked the small references crosswise between the Orc units and their appearances in Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, in which you fight Orcs, Goblins and even a Paokai. The new campaign was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the story far better than Hammers of Fate.
In addition, all units, from every race, now have a third upgrade available. The balance in these upgrades is really well done. Instead of “just making them stronger”, each unit now has a “new better feature”, but also a “slightly worse” stat or skill. You really need to look per unit what works best for your playstyle and upgrade them accordingly.
The graphics are great for the time and the animations of the units en environmental buildings are nicely done. The color pattern is warm and soft and enhances the experience. All the new unit variations are a little mixed. Some are straight reskins with a different color, but others have completely different looks.
The best upgrades for the units in my opinion are the Dungeon creatures (different clothing, new weapons, more armor pieces). The worst are the Inferno creatures (make everything grey and replace fire with smoke).
By far the best aspect of Heroes of Might and Magic V, is the sound. The (combat) music is absolutely great and the sound effects are spot on. I loved the satisfying sound effect of the scythe of the Wraith units and the four-sword attack of the Rakhasa rani. It is sound design at its best. The only personal complaint I have, is that all the sound effects of the third upgrade units are completely ruined in my opinion. They all sound terrible in comparison to the solid, brutal effects from the second upgrade units. This is a matter of my own experience I think.
The mechanics, controls and interfaces are easy to understand and can be mastered fairly quickly.
I think Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East is the best expansion for the main game and when playing HOMM again, Tribes of the East is the way to go.
Definitely recommend this game.

After playing classic Heroes of Might and MagicII, that got me into the series, this is one that was most memorable.2 great expansions, and nice simple story did great job along with first time great 3D graphics (including castles and battle). Gameplay is perfect and pretty well balancedbetween the 6 races (8 after 2 expansions). Heroes and artifact systems was done great as well. Hoping someday 8th part of the series comes out for us to enjoy. This one is for me the best of the series.

If you can cope with the game's shortcomings, then this title can offer hundreds of hours of intense gaming.
A solid follow-up to an already engaging franchise. Players with a lot of time invested in Heroes of Might and Magic V are going to appreciate the engine tweaks and thoroughly enjoy giving it a go with the Orcs.
It does nothing to expand upon the base game and therefore make itself worthy of notice, except for those of you with a burning desire to see how a sub-par fantasy story turns out who can't be bothered to look it up on Wikipedia. [Christmas 2007, p.88]
All of which amounts to new levels, harder difficulty, and not much else. This is pretty much the template for second expansion packs these days, so Tribes of the East is at least somewhat trendy. Nevertheless, you can't praise this mediocre add-on for fitting in with the cool kids. Nival should have finished the Heroes V series on a higher note than this.
So this is pretty much the same game again, with a few new missions and multiplayer maps, a couple of new mechanics and a new faction. After a year and a half. If this is the best the world has to throw at me, I might just retire again.
Maybe the plot of this part of the trilogy is worse than the first, but the gameplay is completely completed. More even delayed additional campaigns in which it could play for several weeks. Of course 10.

Well, HoMM 5 is the last of the classic Heroes series, you know :D
Imho it combines the gameplay of Heroes 3 and unbeatable design
of Heroes 2! Tribes of the East completes the game and seals it as the
last best HoMM. Tired writing, I gonna go play some Heroes myself!

Great expansion and a general improvement, but playing the orc campaign seems a bit too easy for me after the hard-ish main story line.
