All you have ever known is the madness of the front lines and of men butchering each other. War-torn Europe stands ripped apart by a front line that runs straight through the heart of Germany where American and Western European troops battle against enemy forces. In an eternal war that seems to have no end in sight, opposing forces mercilessly attack each other with unrelenting force, claiming small victories one day only to lose them the next. As Lieutenant James Anderson you must infiltrate and destroy key enemy positions deep behind enemy lines using your sharpened combat skills and stealth where necessary. If successful, your mission could finally put a stop to the carnage and restore what everybody has long since forgotten about: peace. Alternative history: between reality and fiction, Iron Storm takes place in an imaginary environment which has been inspired by real events. Iron Storm takes real elements from the First World War; trenches, barbed wire fences, mines, gas warfare, snipers?and combines them with more modern elements from the Second World War; automatic weapons, radar, tanks, flame throwers? as well as elements inspired by modern warfare; helicopters, lasers, electronics and more. 1. The story is what really what makes Iron Storm rock!
  2. The game's story manages to draw through its limitations, and the shoot-em-up gameplay is enjoyable for the segments when it's not so tough we're tearing our hair out.
  3. If there were a category for set design and creativity, this game would be one of the forerunners for most creative of the year.
  4. What hurts this game more than anything else, is that it could have been so much better.
  5. Its story doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and it's sometimes frustratingly difficult, but Iron Storm is a reasonably successful action game, which is what counts.
  6. An interesting premise, but dismal AI and frustrating trial and error gameplay ultimately weigh this title down.

    Iron Storm has its own versin of the "what if" game: what if WWI had never ended? Unfortunately, it may leave you wondering, "What if I was playing a game that was more fun?" [Feb 2003, p.80]

    There are three types of games:
    - the good ones let you choose different ways to reach an objective (e.g. Deus Ex, Bioshock, Sniper Elite);
    There are three types of games:
    - the good ones let you choose different ways to reach an objective (e.g. Deus Ex, Bioshock, Sniper Elite);
    - the mediocre ones force you through a single, linear way;
    - the bad ones let you think you can choose, but punish you when you try a way that's not what the designer intended.
    Alas, Iron Storm is the third type of game (most of the time, at least). When you try something different, it hinders you in unfair ways (you slow to a crawl, you meet invincible enemies...).
    Some levels are good (the trenches, the town), but some are quite awful (the underground facility, the train), or confusing and frustrating (the final Reichstag).
    On top of this, you have a few bugs, and an irritating unbalanced difficulty (I played on Easy... and it was sometimes too easy, and sometimes very hard!). Its "saving grace" is you can fast save anywhere; and trust me, saving often it's the only to way to finish this game while keeping your sanity.
    The premise was good and the game has some interesting ideas and atmosphere, but it also has uninspired locales and gameplay: in the end, it's a game that could have been good, but it's seriously flawed. Try it if you find it cheap and you have low expectations, but prepare to be frustrated.
