Accused of the murder of her one time mentor, Werner Von Croy, Lara becomes a fugitive on the run. Pursued by the police, she follows the Alchemist into a dark world of blood, betrayal and vengeance where it is up to her to defeat this unholy alliance, and stop them from unleashing their incredible powers on the world. 1. Even with TR’s faults, this game is quite enjoyable for new people to the TR universe. Old fans will just be ecstatic over the story and the chance to play a 21st century version of Lara Croft.
  2. The gameplay fails on so many different levels, and that’s a shame given how good the other elements are in the game.
  3. Production values in the graphics and sound are excellent. The attention to detail, from the rich textures to the symphonic score, is nothing short of brilliance. If only the game played as good as it looks and sounds.
  4. The twitchy controls mean that instant death is just a flick of the analog stick away, and even though we’re not psychic, we can guarantee you’ll die many, many times just trying to either work out where you’ve got to go or nab yourself a handful of bonus items.
  5. Infuriating, buggy, and ultimately boring. [Oct 2003, p.96]
  6. There's almost no connection between your keypresses and Lara's movements on-screen. It feels like she's moving through molasses. [Sept 2003, p.74]

The PC version has better visuals, more comfortable control, and fewer bugs. And online patches might stamp out the bugs that do exist. [Sept 2003, p.51]

Some really do save Lara's life. I was kind of (not totally) disappointed that it did not reach up to its full, undiscovered, "new" potential. Different from its predecessors, but still very good. The controls are not as bad as some people say it is. Expand

love the game. Yes indeed it is the most advanced and most interesting lara Croft game yet. But I think Tomb Raider 4 is still the best but love the game. Yes indeed it is the most advanced and most interesting lara Croft game yet. But I think Tomb Raider 4 is still the best but the new Lara Rocks. I had no troubles with the controls because I am a fan of lara and I have played TR 3,TR 4 TR Chronicles and I now have finished TR TAOD. Everyone should try this one. Expand

In fact the story remains one of my favorites in the series after a little more than a decade. The only issue is that much of the story was obviously cut out before release. This gives the game a disjointed feel. The music is also excellent and always fits the setting well.

However these high points only cause the lows to stand out more. The controls are frustrating and takes far too long to get used to. Although tolerable after a short while, they still have far too many hiccups when trying to do something as simple as walk across a room. The game play could have also been more consistent. It feels as though the developers began adding in RPG elements, but ultimately abandoned the idea.

Overall, the game was obviously rushed to release in an unfinished status. It had the potential to be an excellent addition (by the more interesting story if anything else). However, the crude controls and rampant bugs. Make it so that many users cannot even enjoy said story.

Easily the most awkward game in the world. Looks great, however controls are as easy to master as a three wheeled shopping trolley on ice.
