The level design, enemy placement, and especially the puzzles are all, by and large, wonderfully crafted. There are a few instances where the "traps" seem more unfair than clever, but that hardly tarnishes what is otherwise a terrific experience. You'll be hard-pressed to find a modern game like Legend of Grimrock any time soon, but with a game of this quality, you won't need one.

A great surprise, truly excellent, slick and challenging RPG, especially now when games are designed for semimorons. [Apr 2012]

Beautiful, atmospheric and decisively old school dungeon crawl that does proper justice to the classics of the genre. Keeps the gameplay simple and logical, is suitably difficult and pulls no punches when you mess it up, yet you simply can't put it down. Recommended.

Classic dungeon-crawling brought back to life. [June 2012, p.52]

The game is a wonderful blend of mindbending puzzles, old school RPG combat and dungeon survival. If you're a fan of RPGs in any way, shape or form, you owe it to yourself to give this game a shot, even if it's just to see where RPGs got their start.

Legend of Grimrock is a big, fantastic old style game. Now we can show to our children how RPGs were made!

Legend of Grimrock deserves candlelight and graph paper. Who knows how long it will take until someone will bridge the gap between an idealized past and the reality of now in such a wonderful way again; and if it will be in such an uncompromising and yet perfectly working way, as it was accomplished with Legend of Grimrock.

Legend of Grimrock is an old-fashioned dungeon crawler brilliant in many ways. Any good old player will love it!

Legend of Grimrock is a strong debut for Almost Human, and I'm excited to see what other dungeons they put out and the mods that players create.

Personally, I feel as if this is one of the best titles I've played in a long time, despite some of its gratuitous flaws. Movies are sometimes judged on their ability to make people forget their problems for a couple of hours – the immersion. LoG definitely has that going for it, and even when stumped and dying repeatedly, I couldn't pull myself away. This is a sleeper hit that everyone should at least try, and let's hope its success encourages the developers to work on another game, improving on an already-polished title.

A delightfully nostalgic, but harsh, RPG treat, oozing old school charm. [July 2012, p.90]

Dungeon crawling at its nineties finest: Legend of Grimrock is a compelling and clever old-school RPG, full of strange enemies to kill and riddles to solve.
  13. Apr 4, 2012
If you are a fan of classic Dungeon Crawlers then there isn't a whole lot to complain about with Legend of Grimrock. This is a tribute to games like Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder and Ultima Underworld.

The focus is on atmosphere and brain-teasers, both of which the game pulls off with absolute aplomb and unbelievably slick production, to the point where one can almost smell the grime and mold on the dungeon's walls.

This is not only a Hack & Slay with atmospheric visuals, it offers clever puzzles, interesting secrets and lethal traps behind every corner. Legend of Grimrock is a well executed homage to dungeon crawlers.

A respectful tribute to a nearly dead, but never forgotten genre, Legend of Grimrock reminds us the pure basics that can make an RPG so much fun to play: addictive gameplay, strong difficulty & puzzles and pure gripping cold atmosphere.

As long as you understand what you are signing up for, you should be fine. Just don't expect you are playing a less expensive version of Skyrim.

And taking into account that dungeon-crawlers were considered dead and buried, Legend of Grimrock does a very good job of reminding new RPG players why the genre was so popular in the Golden Age.

Everything about this well-crafted romp through deadly dungeons comes together to pull you into its mysterious realm and hold on.
  20. Apr 8, 2012
Legend of Grimrock is perfect for the diehard Dungeon Master fan, and those who are unknown with the genre. For the fans, it represents pure nostalgia. For all others it means a challenging, addicting and oppressive gameplay experience.

Get hooked up on Legend of Grimrock, and it will not let you go until the end.

Legend of Grimrock is a fantastic dungeon crawler and a perfect tribute to games like Dungeon Master or Ultima Underworld.

I was most impressed that Legend of Grimrock treats its players seriously and as thinking beings - not as blunt consumers.

With good graphics, smart puzzles and a ton of secrets to discover Legend of Grimrock pretty much hits the mark. Sure, it may not be for everyone, storytelling is weak and to call it old-fashioned would be an understatement. But if you ever cared about classics like Dungeon Master, this one is for you. Not only a love letter to Old School Dungeon Crawlers, but also fine game in its own right.

A relic of the RPG's golden era, revived and refined for the modern age. [July 2012, p.71]
  26. May 23, 2012
In a way, The Legend of Grimrock is a lot like Dark Souls. The game rewards calculated, meticulous play and any severe injuries or deaths are likely a result of not taking in your surroundings. There are a lot of ways to die in Grimrock and if you're not paying attention, taking the time to search out better gear and learn to craft potions, you're going to have a difficult time with it. However, there's a great feeling of accomplishment as you traverse each floor, defeating powerful monsters and figuring out puzzle solutions on your own.
  27. May 17, 2012
As I mentioned earlier, Legend of Grimrock is a game crafted for a specific audience with the express purpose of providing a pure, faithful recreation of an old genre - though it's appeal isn't necessarily restricted to it.
  28. May 16, 2012
Legend of Grimrock is a gaming milestone, for more than a few reasons. First of all, despite being developed by a team of only four, it displays technical levels that smash the stereotype of the "indie game with mediocre/bad graphics". But Grimrock's greatest success lies in the fact that it reminds us why these games used to be so popular. It might be based on a decades-old formula, but Grimrock's gameplay feels fresher than ever, since you will find nothing like it in the market! [May 2012]
  29. May 15, 2012
Legend of Grimrock proves that the "dungeon crawler" genre still has a lot of life left. Compared to other modern RPG's it offers an unique blend of puzzling, exploration and surprisingly tactical combat, and to top it off it looks absolutely fantastic. This has something to offer everyone, not just old school gamers with fond memories of Dungeon Master.
  30. May 11, 2012
Legend of Grimrock is old school in every way possible from the character building to the ancient controls and dark catacombs. But if you can overlook the initial awkwardness, Grimrock has some nice surprises. If you enjoy games like Eye of the Beholder and Ultima Underworld back in the days or if you're interested what your dad played when he was young but with updated graphics, this is the game for you.

It might disappoint "young" gamers, but thous who started playing in mid 90 - you will love this game.

I keep coming up to new enemies, and even when you run into old ones, there are so many different ways you can fight them with the whole real-time movement. The puzzles aren't too hard so far. Have spent around 10 minutes on a few areas, only to find the solution was so close all along. The environment is just awesome. Sure the tiles are repeated, but what do you expect in a dungeon game. Loot is pretty superb as well. Keep finding different armour with different trade-offs. Haven't even beaten the first dungeon of many to come and already I can say this game was worth the $15 it goes for when not on sale. And I didn't even have to spend that much with the pre-order! Great game! If you loved older dungeon crawlers or are just looking for a new game to play, this should be at the top of your to-get list! Very well made. Looking forward to the new dungeons and other things to come for this game! Full Review »
