84A compelling and brave interpretation, let down by an obtuse single-player mode. [PC Gamer UK]
-
Magic players might like it as a diversion from the card game, or they might hate it with it's dumbing down and changing of the rules.
-
80Easy to pick up and damn fun to play.
-
80A top-notch action title that captures the depth of a turn-based card game. Open-minded Magic fans and tactical action gamers should check it out.
-
79The interface and control is simple enough but the depth of this sucker will likely be lost on most.
-
It provides a great new game mechanic that should interest many, but with such a limited scope, lack of variety between duels, and poor likelihood of any kind of expansion save for some new spells, its hard to promise everybody will get their moneys worth.
-
Its easy to learn and difficult to master, but the experience you have from beginning to end will be challenging and rewarding.
-
74Elements of the RTS and fighting genres will turn heads. But some will complain about the over-simplicity.
-
71Feels too much like a simple port of a console game. PC gamers are learning to expect much more! If you enjoy console beat-em-ups, then it will at least provide some variety in your diet.
-
It is possibly the most accessible version of Magic Ive ever played, as even my friends who had never played a game in their life were able to understand and enjoy the title on its own merits.
-
69Could have benefited from a better interface, but at its core, Battlegrounds is still a decent game.
-
Ive played so many "Warcraft III" clones recently that its really refreshing to cover a game thats actually doing something innovative. However, its the online and VS games that really flesh out Battlegrounds, since the single-player experience is pretty flat.
-
60It goes halfway towards inventing a new genre, but it can't decide whether to invent the action-RTS or the tactical-fighting game, so it ends up just awkwardly defying any sort of established gameplay conventions.
-
It's not great, and using the keyboard is murder, but with both solid single-player and multiplayer support, Battlegrounds is a surprisingly commendable mix of card fighting and 3D brawling. [Mar 2004, p.79]
-
58There are definitely some hurdles you'll have to get over to enjoy this game, but there is certainly fun to be had. For me it was the strategic, puzzle-like single player mode, but for others it may be the ability to alter decks and play against online opponents.
-
54A frustrating action/strategy hybrid where you miss the action while flailing to control the strategy. [Mar 2004, p.67]
-
If I want impossible, I'll call my mother. [Apr 2004, p.89]
