    Catalyst is a triumph of form over substance. At first the city looks huge, shiny and perfect but soon turns out to be just a lifeless, empty mockup, where you distinguish the districts mainly by background colors. The character development system feels artificial and redundant. The story and characters are so shallow and badly presented that I quickly lost any interest in them and focused on what the game does quite well – on parkour. [08/2016, p.60]

    Mirror’s Edge Catalyst misses some polish around its key elements. Once again, it’s a shame to see all this untapped potential in an intellectual property like Mirror’s Edge.

    Catalyst is not a flawless reboot, but it remains a very deep experience, filled with well-designed quests and interesting secondary activities; most of all, the game takes advantage of the environment in a clever way, making it strongly interactive for the players.

    The main game’s innovation – "open world" which actually is not so open and certainly is not the world. Honestly it is not even residential district despite the fact that city’s 3D-map contains hundreds or even thousands of buildings. Most of them just will flick on the horizon in the best case.     If you're a big fan of the first game, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one. However, if you never played the original, you might want to take a test drive first to see if you want to commit to it.

    The story just doesn’t live up to the exhilarating gameplay, and a weak, unresolved ending gives a poor final impression. Thankfully, the game can re-enter your good graces once you’re done with the plot, and you can just spend hours running across rooftops for fun. The occasional death-inducing fall will frustrate you, but Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst’s first-person platforming feels so good when it works that you won’t easily give up.

    As far as parkour gameplay is concerned, this is a well done reboot with more story and content, but the the integration of new ideas feels artificial.

    Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a good game. Nothing less, nothing more. Trying to find innovation and enriching the basic formula from the previous game by introducing an open world did not do much good. The best parts of the game are when we're completing linear, scripted missions. Exploring the city becomes monotonous after a few hours. In other words - it should be a better game but fans of Assassin's Creed will be pleased.

    And although some further variation in the side missions and challenges would have been appreciated, in the end, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is simply one of those games that is better than the sum of its parts.

    If you loved the original Mirror's Edge, or enjoy the concept of free-running around a beautiful city without the fear of falling off a skyscraper or crotching yourself on a railing, Catalyst is most definitely right up your alley. As an open world adventure game however, it has some way to go. There are too many elements in the mix, and not all of them pan out.

    Mirror's Edge: Catalyst has an original gameplay experience running and jumping everywhere with new open world concepts in the franchise, but fails with poor a combat system, generic enemies and silly AI.

    Despite the missteps with combat, and another storyline that is just too dry to get invested in even with well-produced cutscenes, I still recommend Catalyst. It’s annoyingly close to being the ideal Mirror’s Edge game, but retains a few of its predecessors’ issues, even if those problems have manifested in different forms. If you loved the first game as much as I did, there’s so much to enjoy about running around this big, gorgeous playground—I just wish DICE had stuck the landing.

    Mirror’s Edge Catalyst feels better in many aspects and delivers much more content than its predecessor. It still has some issues like the combat system or frustrating climbing areas, but it is still an impressive argument for its unique and fresh concept.

    Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is an exceptional sandbox. There’s nothing in the entire medium that feels quite as unique as being able to sprint, duck, and dive towards the horizon, making the most of the many varied paths on offer in this superbly sculpted playground. But when the game tries to be more than that, it begins to fall apart. Catalyst is certainly a step forward for Mirror’s Edge, but not the leap that it could be. If this is the return of Faith on a regular basis though, DICE have created the foundations for a very strong sequel indeed.

    The impression that Mirror's Edge Catalyst leaves is like a person with bones full of calcium, covered with weak flesh. A better implementation of story, characters, mission design and combat system should be the first priorities on a future sequel.

    I want to forgive the game for its lightweight take on economic inequality and its lame climatic fight if only because of its wonderful sense of kinesis and the alienating beauty of the Glass city. Sometimes flawed creations are worth appreciating for their merits.

    Mirror's Edge: Catalyst will likely make people feel the same as the original, it'll be a divisive game. The freedom of movement is excellent, vastly improved over the original, but it's let down by a poor story, unrelatable characters and an incredibly annoying combat system, which it forces you into all too frequently. Still an exciting game to explore and look around, it's hard not to recommend Mirror's Edge if you're looking for something different, which it still is

    I’m surprised to find myself thinking of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst as a disappointingly safe game, given that I would never have used that word to describe its 2008 predecessor.

    Cinematics start, they stutter off and on for the first few seconds, then performance plummets and both the video and audio will start to skip around and desync. Then you’re forced to listen to Edgy Revolution Guy give a sermon at half-speed.
  3. Catalyst occasionally infuriated me, and at other times simply passed me by in a blur, but on the whole I enjoyed my time with it. The movement is still wonderful. The world is still beautiful. There’s still nothing else quite like it. It’s better than the first game in most ways and there are still umpteen ideas in here crying out for a better implementation. So I’ll end in the spirit of the game, with a refined version of what I said last time: Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is good and you should probably play it, but damn, it could have been superb.

    Dear DICE, if you claim you are making an open world game, make it open world, not just hopping along the rooftops. Open world should have been street level running, bouncing off cars, climbing up buildings from ground level. That would have been a good leap forward. Also thank goodness for the ESC key on my keyboard, did you even employ someone to write the story or just came up with something bland and pointless, skip, skip , skip those pointless pace ruining cut-scenes. My suggestion to people that haven't bought this yet, wait till xmas when it will be about $10. Full Review »
