Moonbase Commander will stand out as the sleeper hit of 2002 and it deserves all the praise I am sure it will get.

88Probably the best game I had the pleasure to play this year. Combining a very simple concept with a good presentation and an addictive enough gameplay to keep me playing for years to come, the game has breathed a lot of fresh air into the otherwise stale gaming market.
-
86A solid turn based strategy game that is surprisingly well designed.
-
83One of the most accessible and uniquely addictive strategy games this year.
-
83The interface is designed for ease of use, and the game boasts terrific sound and graphics. This is a wonderful game.
-
80It's a really fun game that you can easily install at work to burn some time when your boss isn't looking, or just whittle away an hour or two without noticing the time pass.
-
80Combines classic arcade fun with some real time strategy elements, creating a game that not only is fun but makes you think about how you're going to play this next move.
-
80Its graphics may be bland and its sound effects cheesy, but I can't stop playing the damn thing. [Nov 2002, p.126]
-
80A solid and extremely fun game that will probably be overlooked by many in favor of more high-profile titles. It's a shame really, because Moonbase Commander's simple focus and gameplay is an excellent example of substance over style.
-
Don't let its budget price fool you, MoonBase Commander is an incredibly entertaining game regardless of its price tag and quirky online support. [Nov 2002, p.86]
-
72A deceptively simple overhead strategy game only slightly comparable to "Scorched Earth."... My only real disappointment with [it] is the limited range of weapons.
-
The skimpy single player game, the lack of an internal matchmaker, the clean but very simple graphics and the inability to save your game make Moonbase Commander feel more like a hobby than a commercial product. That doesn't mean it's not fun.
-
Adults might find it simplistic, repititious, and boring, but it's possible that younger kids might find it accessible, challenging, and addictive. [Nov 2002, p.124]
