  1. One of the best five-on-five games for any platform. [Mar 2004, p.84]
  2. Despite its minor flaws, NBA Live 2004 could be the best basketball game ever made.
  3. Nothing is more basketball than humiliating your opponent with ball handling and dribbling, and the Freestyle Control offers the gratification and humiliation experienced by any player no a court that was just faked out in front of a sell-out crowd.
  4. It would have been easy to throw out a repeat of last year’s title considering there is no competition, but it is nice to see that EA Sports has actually improved the game. Well done, and a lot of fun.

Thanks to Live's controls and in-your-face gameplay, it's one of the better basketball games to hit the cyber court this year, even if it is more of a two-player arcade game, rather than a sim.
  6. The game's still far from perfect, but NBA Live 2004 is much more enjoyable than last year's version. [Mar 2004, p.77]
  7. The real star of NBA Live 2004, however, is the superb visual quality and the newfound ease with which players can call set plays and change defenses. [Dec 2003, p.84]
  8. Offering several new features, as well as improvements to the game's graphics, sound, and overall polish, NBA Live 2004 is a good game for Live fans and general basketball fans alike.
  9. 75
For every innovative new feature, there's a gameplay gaffe or design flaw that drags it down; it's certainly better than last year's hyperactive NBA Live 2003, but it's still a year away from being something truly special.
  10. Taking the speed of a play down a couple of notches may give the game more authenticity, but everything else feels unfinished. [Feb 2004, p.62]
