You’ll need to invest yourself and a great deal of time just to learn the nuances of the gameplay and the interface, and making smart intuitive decisions before the missions can save you a lot of trial and error.
This gem of a space tactics offering is everything that fans of the genre have been waiting for, as it takes gorgeous, next-generation graphical technology and applies it to an exciting game about starship combat, rogue artificial intelligences, galaxy-spanning wormholes, and more.

Some people complained that this game was all too classic, without new rivaling ideas I couldn't object more! Yes, the plot is classic, and that's a way I love. The rest is really well laid out, an epic story, many different aspects, sometimes not explained well enough, I agree there. It is too bad that the creators apparently did not have the time to release more patches because some things are unbalanced and a little random. If you can forgive that, you'll have much fun with this game. AND there are some game guides out there that can help you get over the first difficulties. Also, the graphics are still something to catch your eye, even today (I discovered the game only recently). In any case, Nexus sure captured me, despite the (for me forgivable) flaws it unfortunately has. BUT they are "merely" technical in my point of view.

A good game. I certainly didn't think so when I began playing it however. There's a frustratingly high learning curve here and the game design doesn't exactly help that at all.

It looks fantastic, but strategy aficionados may find that there's too much of a puzzle-like aspect to the game's missions.
At its worst, Nexus is painfully ponderous and distantly detached. At its best it's visually stupendous sci-fi spectacular with depth as well as style. The 2001 of Real Time Strategy if you will.
Nexus plays like a great game that misses the mark almost every step of the way. It’s slick, complex, and ambitious. But the potential here is never realized.
I think this game would be like Homeworld or Haegemonia, which can be played with relax and not too draining the brain, but apparently not. This game is not the kind that can be completed in one full day, but it took a few days. We have to try many times to complete a mission, every mission there is not easy! Really have to think! This make me a headache and had to drink coffee or tea when playing it. But, overall, this game is very good. The story is good, the graphics are nice, and the gameplay is also good, although already 10 years old.

I played this again recently and it's still looks good even 8 years on (after some tweaks to get 1920x1080) and is still one of the best RTSs I've played. Shame it had such a bad release and no one knew about it, otherwise they would have been able to finish the sequel. Currently £1.49 on steam, if you like sci-fi and RTSs it's one you need to play.
The down sides are... it has quite a steep learning curve and it's not aimed at people who cannot figure things out for themselves (like most games do these days), there is no hand-holding and the AI is ruthless. Which makes it very hard.

The controls ruin this game. There is a little tutorial but after Mission 3 there is always the problem "was the commando accepted?" - "why did the laser not fire?" - "is enemy1 or enemy2 near? where am i in 3d space?". Sorry - not my cup of tea.
Atmosphere, Story, Music, Sound - all good.
Controls and Gamesplay - no well designed.

A great looking game, with a good story. However, shoddy music and an incredibly steep learning curve, coupled with frustratingly hard missions and no offline play other than the campaign, make this game one that I would happily cheat on to complete it.

Five Word Review: Game's potential thwarted, little remains.
Favorite Thing: The story was predictable and cliche but it was a bit enjoyable in spite of the horrid gameplay and stability.
Least Favorite Thing: The abundance and persistence of crashes. Lots of times you will continuously crash around the same spot. The solution isn't to restart the mission, it's to restart the PREVIOUS mission! Ridiculous.
Playtime: ~ 20h (many of those spent replaying missions due to crashes)
Enjoyment: 4/10
Recommendation: Only if you enjoy constant crashes.
