It's free, fast-paced and the asynchronous teams keep the gameplay interesting, but two gameplay modes aren't enough to keep you playing for a long time.
Very in depth gameplay. The free to play aspects are very reasonable (better than LoL for example). The matchmaking is a bit shoddy but I think it's reasonable considering it's in open beta.
Well, I just got to play the game. it's open beta right now free to play on steam, I've got to say I am impressed. compared to some latest early access games, this one feels pretty smooth and polished. graphics are really good, gameplay is smooth, connection is good. some few issues, but it's okay since it is just open beta.
Im looking forward for more classes and more balance. this could pretty much be the next big competitive hit a la League of Legends. for real.
Very fun game, I'm looking forward the official launch and all the players that it will brings. A video game that benefits from well coordinated movement, pacing and attacks. I see myself having countless hours of fun once I get a good team/clan to play with.
For an Open Beta, the game is very polished and visually pleasing. I haven't fell upon a single issue I'd deem horrible or unacceptable. I have had no problem with the Matchmaking either, but mind that I only played with pugs, maybe it is different if you want to match someone in particular.
Sure at first glance, the Vampires appear to be overpowered. Rare are the games I've seen the humans do the required 30 kills. BUT, it is neither impossible NOR necessary.
See, a match is always split in two rounds. Everyone plays Human and Vampire once, and the game's victory is for the team with the most kills during both round. It does not matter than Vampire vs Human often gives 10-30 ish score since all you have to do when it is your turn as a human, is to do 30-11 to win the whole match.
It is a fight of how many kills human can do before playing the vampire that is the tie breaker. I love that principle.
Each class and race have very unique abilities and game-play elements that makes it load of fun to fiddle with.
I'm eager to see what the future holds for that game.
This game has its fun parts but sadly it feels like there's not a single game designer even trying to make the game better. I'm not even sure there are any game designer involved on this game. Every part which ****, **** a whole lot and it doesn't take long to get the game's commercial motto: "Meh, we'll make money anyway."
I know it´s probably bad form to refer to other reviews, but I feel like it has to be addressed. This game IS in beta. It´s not something to cover up bugs. There are a small selection of maps and things like the party system are completely dysfunctional. It can be critiqued that of all the things that are finished, the catalog of things to spend actual money on is decent in size. They have to fund their game somehow.
The game is a team based third-person shooter/punch or claw-er. It´s an interesting mix of the team based shooter with a MOBA based element in form of the abilities that each class has. (I say this based on the impact and feel of these abilities. Their ability to turn the tides of a team-fight reminds me very much of SMITE rather than any MMO or RPG).
I´ll say I was honestly surprised at how well this game played. As I think anyone who would even consider critiquing a game should, I looked up the developer, Psyonix. Not being a name I recognized I was a bit skeptical. The developer hasn´t made anything you or I should recognize, but they have actually worked on a couple of AAA titles like Gears of War and Mass Effect 3, in which I assume they worked on the multiplayer aspects of those games. This shows in the actual game. The balancing at first seemed pretty well done in all aspects and do truly depend on your teammates. At first it seemed like hunters (humans who hunt the vampires) could just stick together in a corner and shoot down any vampire who approached, but large classes like the tyrant and the use of smoke bombs are very useful for breaking up parties and it seems that every possibly exploited aspect has some sort of counter.
Besides balancing the gameplay just feels really good which is something that really surprised me. The movement of both vampires and hunters feel really smooth and I´m a big fan of the vampires´ ability to climb building and move effortlessly through the level. The hunters´ weapons feel really good to use, you get the feeling that you´re doing damage and without feeling to rapid or sluggish.
The design of the characters, weapons and levels are also very interesting and aesthetically pleasing. (however some levels are less interesting than others)
The main issues with the game so far are smaller. The party system as of writing this is broken beyond belief and it almost seems like it doesn´t want you to play with your friends. It´s nice to see that the developers have already addressed this and it probably won´t be long before this is fixed. Other minor issues like some of the abilities, in my case the grappling hook for the scout, seems poorly implemented and it varies a lot how useful it is based on the level and I wouldn´t be surprised if I´d find it somewhere else.
But to be honest I am VERY optimistic with this game so far. Psyonix has really surprised me with this one and I hope I won´t be disappointed down the line.
Much like many these days, they call a releasable product that has bugs a "beta." It gives the developer some slack to get things tweaked for "final release." If SWTOR was called a "beta" for the first year, people probably wouldn't have been as harsh. Since there is a functioning cash shop within this "beta", you can't really call it a beta.
Other than that, it's a pretty decent game. Nothing to write home about, but it kills time when you want some quick action. The different, but balanced method they are going with is at least refreshing from a PvP game. The vampires have a DISTINCTLY different feel than the humans. I actually do quite well with vampires, but totally **** as human (juxtaposition pun intended).
If it didn't have "Nosgoth" as a title, you wouldn't even know that this is supposed to be set in the "Legacy of Kain"/"Soul Reaver" world. This is a mediocre game that is compounded by the insulting use of a beta title and that cost it a couple of points. I would only suggest this as a time killer. Throw them a $5 for the effort and use it to kill time during the Summer doldrums. It's not worth more than that.
If you are a fan of the LoK/SR franchise, AVOID THIS GAME! It's pretty insulting to fans.
+++ Pros +++
1. Graphics and music are ok.
2. Vampires
3. Interesting idea to bring something new.
- - - Cons - - -
1. Multiplayer is Versus only (no co-op modes).
2. The camera is very close to your character and cannot be set (third person view).
3. The collision is way off (especially for melee attacks).
4. The classes are unbalanced a some are heavily handicapped (no running, jumping and so on...).
5. Very short game (2 modes and 2 teams on few maps, thats it).
Unplayable mess, seriously. How can you fight,if half of the screen is blocked by your character and you cant see around you or where you going? No wonder this game is free - no one would pay for it.
