A poorly-made, unashamedly dumb game that nevertheless offers equally dumb entertainment. [July 2012, p.69]

While Orion: Dino Horde has potential, it will certainly fall short of even modest expectations. If it weren't for there already being quite the track record of bad Jurassic games, I'd suggest that fighting dinosaurs has never been so dull. A shame, since it's evident that the developers put a lot of time into it... it's just too bad they didn't focus on making it fun.

It may be fun if we play with friends for a few hours… but it may be not. There are many games fighting in the FPS genre, and it's very hard to find something worth highlighting in this one.

Perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised that ORION: Dino Horde was such a disappointment. The gaming industry has been rife with rumors about scurrilous behaviour concerning a very similar title, Dino Beatdown. ORION: Dino Horde's rough edges suggest that it has been quickly brought to market and cynically shoveled out to gamers in the vain hope that its over the top premise will bring in a few bucks.

  2. Sure the game has problems, but this game is seriously unlike any other, nice graphics, a fun concept, and THE most commited lead dev ever. Hopefully the bugs get sorted soon, and then this game will be perfect. Expand
  3. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Orion: Dino Horde, created by Spiral Game Studios, is a sci fi first person shooter that revolves around battles between humans and dinosaurs. The game doesn't have a campaign mode and is meant as a co-op game to play with a group of friends. The game does have a single player mode however, but it's only you against an entire squad of enemies. The single player would definitely be enhanced if there were bots to help you during single player so you could practice for multiplayer, as it stands currently however single player is pretty one-sided in the favor of the dinosaurs. The game features various types of game modes to play including Survival, which plays much like a tower defence game where you'll be defending a generator. T-Rex Rampage is probably my favorite, in this game mode you will be trying to steal dinosaur eggs and bringing them back to your base to be destroyed, you can also choose to play as the dinosaurs in this game mode as well and taking control of a T-Rex is great fun. Ninja Nippers acts as a team death match type mode where the black legion goes against the purple legion to get the most kills, this mode also has neutral dinosaurs in the game world that will attack you as well. During the ninja nippers game mode you're also given the ability to use a cloaking device to sneak around the game world to fight your enemies be it human players or dinosaurs. Rocketeer is the next game mode and uses explosive weapons as the primary weapon. There are two classes to choose from the rocketeer whom uses a rocket launcher and the grenadier whom uses a grenade launcher. Dude Huge game mode is a team death match type game mode but instead of using standard weapons or explosive weapons you use heavy weapons like a gatling gun or a flame thrower. During this game mode there will also be a point in the map that you will need to capture for your team to gain points, these points go towards your final score and the first team to reach the designated points target is the winner. Finally the random PvP mode is a game mode acts as the games death match and acts as a free for all game mode where you go against other players.

Once you’ve decided which game mode you wish to play it’s time to jump into the dinosaur infested wasteland. There aren’t a lot of maps to choose from unfortunately, there are 4 survival maps and 3 maps for the other game modes allowing you to play on a total of 7 maps each based on a different eco system like deserts and forests. The game also features various types of dinosaurs for you to fight including the infamous T-Rex, velociraptor and even tiny dinosaurs that I can’t remember the names of. There are also flying dinosaurs like the Pterodactyl that will swoop down on you to attack (they can be quite annoying at times). Most gameplay modes give you preset weapons and gear but during survival mode you’re able to buy new weapons, upgrades and augmentations with the money you earn during the game mode by killing the dinosaurs. The weapon and mod purchasing is somewhat setup like Counter Strike but instead of pressing a button to get access to the shop you must use a computer console which is usually fairly far away from the generator you must defend and you’re given 60 seconds between each wave of dinosaurs so it’s a bit of a pain to run all the way back to the computer console then all the way back to the generator in 60 seconds. There are a range of weapons to choose from as well, pistols, sub machine guns, and assault rifles each having their own prices to be able to buy and their own secondary fire that you can switch to at anytime using the H key. There are also a variety of augmentations that you can buy including an improved jump skill that doubles your jump height, cloaking device and a lot more to choose from. Your character’s health also doesn’t recharge in survival mode like in the other game modes so buying health packs is key to surviving. The game plays much like any first person arena shooter with you running through the map shooting anything that gets in your way, you can also choose to switch between first person and third person over the shoulder camera angles if you choose as well.

Overall, Orion Dino Horde is a pretty amusing game where you can run around for some time randomly killing off the dinosaur species, again. While the game could definitely use some improvements in a few departments, like animations, the game is in no way terrible and it offers a lot of fun for those seeking it, and who doesn’t love hunting down a T-Rex only to be chomped. Thanks for reading our review of the game folks and I hope this has shown some insight on this amusing title. I’ll be back with our next review soon!

My friend bought me it in 4-pack as a gift...don't know if to be glad or hate him for doing that to me. It's really a joke. Especially the awesome vehicle control with mouse...not even talking about the other stupidities... Save money, don't buy it. Expand
