The game is unique, providing combat in a video game unlike any other in a unique, highly sought after WWII environment. Its realistic, gritty, tactical, and requires great skill. not for those NEW to he FPS genre. if you want an intense gaming experience this WAS the game for you. but it always had a very small server community. despite this, red orchestra players like myself never let that stop them from thoroughly enjoying the game, with certain very good high population servers and clans/groups that kept the game alive and interesting. i give a lot of respect to tripwire, who even took the time to update the game a LOT after it game out. just goes to show dedication (and tripwire does it for ALL of their games, very well at that). there are only a few minor glitches and errors that arent even bothersome or inhibiting with bombs going off around you. and these glitches are few and far between. the game is immersive and a gem of an FPS. WWII buffs and realism junkies loved it. i say loved because with the NEW red orchestra: heroes of stalingrad coming out, the first game might become a little dated. i encourage you all however to buy the new one. tripwire is a very unique and talented game developer, and i encourage anyone who :loves WWII, loves FPS, loves realism, looking for a challenge/something new. to get it. although really i encourage any and everyone to check it out. im usually hesitant to dish out 50 bucks for a new game, but after playing the first RO, i have complete confidence that its worth the money and supports tripwire to make more games i love. Best online fps of the all times. Thank God some people decided to make a game which isn't next dumbed down fps or another Call of Duty for kids or people with no requirements from games at all than "i want to look it nice". This game is not nice. It's almost perfect for someone who wants to play REAL battles with REAL warfare, with REAL people and a little of REAL history. You're no more "army of one" (or two) - you're a soldier who can else kill with one shot, or be killed with one shot... There are no "pros" or "noobs" in this game. Let's hope Red Orchestra 2 will give us more of Red Orchestra, fixes and new, worthy content. Expand

This game is quite the experiment, but ultimately falls short. From a presentation perspective, the immersion and attention to detail is quite good. The graphics are more than good enough on max settings and the music is great. The weapon sounds are crisp and feel powerful. The various ways you can get mangled and the grittiness of the game is great. However, the gameplay is obnoxious. Many problems stem from the focus on realism (Which in itself is a ridiculous concept, did the devs fight in ww2? What is this claim based on besides ballistics and an interface that fights the user every step of the way? ) The maps are too large for the player count, even on 50 player servers. A problem also common in BF2. Getting anywhere takes an obscene amount of time and at first I was frantically trying to select my spawn point, like in Battlefield games before figuring that it's not possible. The gunplay is irritating and very unsatisfying. Aiming down the sights takes too long, and you have to be perfectly still and prone to make accurate shots, which rewards a campy playstyle that is only accentuated by the immense maps. Any attempt at moving forward is met by a hail of grenades or cross-map sniping, forcing players to stay entrenched and just wait for runners. Forcing the player to left-click a second time to rechamber the round on bolt-action rifles is superfluous and unnecessary, all other games do it for you. What people look for in FPS games, and even the hardcore population that this game seems to be aimed at, is weapon balance and satisfying gunplay. If this can not be delivered, not amount of absurd realism will make them stick with the game, which explains the failure of OR on a commercial level and the ever thriving of games like Counter-Strike and Quake Live in the competitive community. This is easily my favorite online FPS. Its not a soldier sim like others are making out but it is far more advanced than most games in this genre, which is why some people (press circle to win PS3 noobs) have given it such low scores. The maps that people are saying are too big are probably the home made maps created after release, because the original maps aren't really all that big. Ditching the crosshairs in favour of iron sights was a definite plus, so much so i hate having them in other games. The game is 4 years old and so the graphics look extremely dated. AI is retarded but this is an multiplayer game so not really a major issue. The sound can be misleading on some occasions as some vehicles can sound a lot closer than they actually are on some of the larger maps. The community that plays this game is generally older than that of similar games i've played so team tactics are actually used. Unlike BF2 where its just a chaotic bunny jumping, base raping free for all. If your ideal online fps is one where you run around spraying bullets everywhere, then like the 136 reviewers who gave negative scores this game isn't for you. If you fancy a bit of a challenge then this might be the game for you and as it is priced so cheaply now, could be a good way of deciding whether or not to buy its upcoming sequel without spending too much. I love that game. It's totally noob-unfriendly, just good players are fighting on large maps. You have to move very clever, lay down some suppression fire from your MG gunner, get close with your MP40 or StG44. Pick off enemy soldiers form distance with your bolt action rifle. Great game, but not suitable for many players. No kids running around with autofire weapons, no kill streak, no "get-some-cover-after-a-hit-and-everything-is-fine". No, that game is totally different to all the games you have wasted your time until now. Expand

I was SHOCKED when I installed this game, having read a lot of user reviews from gamers who i usually agree with (Imachuemanch). while no great fan of MMOs, multiplayer games or shooters, I was expecting this to be something like the older Call of Duty Games. its a more recent game, so surely the graphics would equal or surpass that. OMG! What a surprise this game is graphically HORRIBLE. It feels nothing like an immersive environment. Using the crappy, amateurish UI, and the highest possible graphics settings, you end up with a game that looks like it was made in 1997. Gameplay? Who knows? Its all online, and the servers seem pretty empty. gameplay didn't feel anything like a real combat sim. Its like battlefield 1942. You spawn in a field with a whole lot of tanks, get in one and go off and try to find an enemy to blow up. It looks like Battlefield 1942 but with MUCH worse gameplay and graphics. That should be alright, you could always try the single player game right? WRONG. Only online multiplayer. A game this useless, this dated needs to be retired before it embarrasses the developer further. I was happy to uninstall this cess pit and all the equally horrible expasions ASAP. Then I was stupid enough to get RO 2 on Steam. Thinking they must have learned and improved their game design. OMG! for different reasons its about equally BAD. A game and development team to avoid. This game blows away COD2, DOD:S, and every other FPS that calls itself a *war* game. RO:O's kickass graphics (and yes, they are good - some people apparently don't know how to change their settings) and sound really immerse you in the war. Overall, this is by far the most satisfying game I've played in years. It's challenging at first without the crosshair crutch and a 50 part HUD - but you soon don't miss those things. In fact, I HATE playing games with those now. Expand

This game has great support from the devs, gameplay is fantastic and the graphics while not topnotch are realistic and quite good! The realism of the game is top notch the graphics i would say are up to par with todays games. The controls are a liitle tough to get used to but after you figure everthing out they work quite well. I own a boatload of games i play css alot but this is NO css you must use strats and work as a team, there will be no spray -n- pray here either you will die very quickly using that method....grab the visine some and some strong coffee you'll be up for a while playin this game ......great game great price 4 real go get it!!!!! I have to agree, this game is horrid. What are you other people looking at? Weapons behave like an out of control firehose, player moves (from first person) with no fluid action. Your stance changes and you have to reset your iron site every time. There has to be some intuitive design to the player, i.e. reload your weapon when its empty or re-chamber a round after you have taken a shot. The sound is deplorable, you cannot differeniate where a shot is coming from or where someone is walking or running. The maps are nice and the I enjoy the teamwork necessary to complete the objectives. Go back to the drawing board with that and make it better. Expand

This game is not in anyway a special game. It's graphics go back to the days of Half-Life 1, or even pre-Half-Life! Before I go on, we must remember... IT IS THE YEAR 2006, NOT 1997! The AI sucks, big time, it is worse than James Bond: Goldeneye on N64. Combat is really fake. I would recommend getting the best WWII game (PERIOD), which is Day of Defeat: Source! This game started off as a free mod for unreal tournament 2003. This only shows how greedy the creators are. In fact, you are paying $24.95 for a bloody modification. I wonder if Atari, Epic Games and Digital Extremes authorized this game to be sold on Steam. I mean, the engine, wich in fact was creaded by Digital Extremes and Atari, is with no doubt copyrighted. So, if you buy this game, you are breaking the law, unless they are authorized to sell it. Expand

BTW Jay the tank damage is really accurate, and loading time isnt the game but the quality of your computer, mine runs it quite quik and smooth. Maybe you just need a better comp...

Some new weapons have already been added, and many bugs fixed. The game has a steep learning curve, but is very enjoyable once you get the hang of it. It's an ok game. AI is stupid though. Load times are horrible. tank damage makes no sense. Anti-Tank rifle can't kill a tank >.> and tanks and cars use your keyboard instead of your mouse like BF2. If you really like old style games like this, or like DOD, this would be a great game for you. Personaly though, I wish I got something else :,(

This game is unique. Such a small dev team has created a addictive fun game. WITH THE NEW FIX LOAD TIMES ARE ONLY 10 SECONDS so if load times ar ekeeping you from buying the game, its been fixed. The tank armor has been rebuilt almost entirely. I was suprised when the dev team tossed im 2 new guns to fight with. Me and my friends play 6+ hours a day playing this non-stop. The map Arad had so much potentional and the dev team knew it so they rebuild it. Sometimes i forget its a game. Overall its a great game if you take gameplay over graphics. Expand

It's ok if you like Battlefield. Many do :-) But you may forget it forever as I did if you try ROOST for some days. You may find its graphics disapointing, the community of players too small, and surprisingly difficult in the beggining, but, after some days, I bet you may be as addicted as I am now.

Best FPS that's come out to date! No crosshair and innacurrate guns make it so you really have to brace your gun; that's right you can lean your gun on any surface to reduce recoil and gain accuracy! As for people saying the gameplay is slow, one bullet in the chest from any gun kills you DEAD, so the trench warfare is the most intense, action packed part of any game I've played (save Rumblebox) and the only time the gameplay is slow, is when your too scared from the bullets whizzing past your head that you have to go and head! The sounds are super-realistic; when played on a high-end sound system the guns sound REAL all this adds to the atmosphere to bring you into the game. I might add one thing, after 2 minutes of play I switched iron-sights aim to right-click and melee to middle-click and everything became intuitive! Expand

This game is worth the money just for the tank battles and the very functional voice comms system. The first time you hop on a server with a bunch of people using the voice comm system, amidst a heated tank battle, you'll fall in love with this game. It's like being in a real war zone, with commanders frantically calling for backup, gunners yelling orders at their drivers, and whatnot. The infantry combat is superb as well - tactics are very important. Rushing forward while doing the spray and pray routine will get you quickly mown down just like in real life. You have to put more thought into your movements - like crawling instead of walking, flanking instead of assaulting the front. The team the works together will consistently beat the team that does not, even when outnumbered. And if your a history buff, RO will definitely satisfy. For instance, I was happily surprised that they included not one, but three different versions of the Russian infantry rifle that was used during WWII. Expand

The is a very fresh shooter, there aren't many other games out there like this. The weapons are completely realistic, I love having to use iron sights. The bots are poor, but you don't have to use them, they're really only good for trying out different weapons and getting the hang of them. I love the ricochet effect of the machinegun tracers. That is 100% realistic. I do wish that the barrels had to be changed, they give you the option to swap out barrels, but I've never had a machinegun barrel melt on me in the game. Also, the game has a few bugs, minor ones though that do not effect the gameplay in any way. This game is a lot of fun for anyone who is a fan of the shooter genre or WWII weapons. Expand

It´s a 08/15 shooter. Very rarely detailled maps. Dammed long loading times for a graphic, that is much worse than the source graphic maybe in HL2. The maps are too large, so there´s no real action. You just run to get to the pont of action. Run very long. And then you get killed by a camping sniper. Wow, what a bad game. Even the open source shooter "Nexuiz" is better. Don´t waste your hard earned money on that game. Expand

The first truly realistic WW2 game out there, and does an awesome job. An immersive experience which is extremely rewarding for the people bothered to invest a small amount of time learning the original game mechanics. Anyone with half a brain cell can adjust their game settings to get graphics which beat source, and can also adjust their settings to get quick load times (10secs). Any complaints about bots is irrelevant as it is a multiplayer game. Also there is a large community of dedicated mappers/modders who are releasing lots of quality maps and additions. Never have trouble finding many full servers playing the maps i like. Basically this is a game for men, the boys who can't handle the real world mechanics and complain that the game doesn't run because of their rubbish computer can go and play counterstrike or dod:S, whilst giving games 0 scores purely because they're rubbish at them. As a sidenote $25 is a bargain for this game, its continually being developed with patches (directly through steam, hence you won't notice), and is also releasing new content such as weapons, maps, vehicles etc for FREE until at least late 2007. As well as the developers actually listening to suggestions and thoughts from the community. Thats a few things you won't find from EA, and their BF2. Expand

One would truly think a game this smelly would had to of been cobbled together in the confines of a Romanian cave and smuggled out to the consumer by Uzbekistanian Gypsies, via a drunken donkey caravan...not uploaded directly to your PC through "Day of Defeat" affiliated Steam. I mean wow condom less sex with a Bosnian hooker couldn‘t produce results this painful! This game sucks…I have made 2 really stupid purchases in my life both equally poor, and well as luck would have it both Russian themed; Having been the proud owner of a little Russian gem known as the Lada Niva I can truly comment on "a poorly carried out plan"... Red Orchestra is a smouldering turd of a game, (Just like the Lada Niva more smouldering turd than it is a Vehicle) and any comment to the contrary is a pack of lies of such epic proportions that one would really be forced to question the sanity of those who would have you believe otherwise. As far as the attempt to suggest that when viewed as a simulation rather than a brutally butchered DOD clone, one might find some glimmer …well this line of thinking would be akin to the application of a thick coat of High Gloss Varnish to a runny, corn filled splatter inside of a broken truck stop rest room toilet. This game is not a simulation, in fact its an insult to any title that does qualify for this distinction. Red Orchestra is ponderous, the interface unwieldy, and awkward and the visuals lack lustre. Games are supposed to be engrossing, exciting visceral and vicarious, Red Orchestra on the other hand is none of these things, and as far as entertainment goes it takes second seat on the fun-meter to my last bowel movement…I want my money back!!! Shame on you Steam, Shame on you Tripwire Studio’s and Shame on the authors of ratings above 3 for this game! A pox upon all your houses! Expand

Great game. I'd just like to say how stupid so many of these low scores are. The fact that the maps take a long time to load doesn't mean the game is bad, it means you have a crappy system. A very realistic game, and fun. Although the intensity and difficulty obviously changes a lot because its a multiplayer game, it is still a tactical and realistic fps. When i first bought it i was dissapointed about no single-player campaign, but playing with others who enjoyed the game and were good players outweighed playing a story-lined campaign with bots.

It's extreamly edictive! AND REALISTIC! If they payed a little more attention to the sound, like in Half Life 2, then it could be one of the most realistic games ever! Oh, and by the way, realism is key to any game. Thats why realistic games get better scores. And by the way, don't be so lazy and say "Oh, this is taking so long! *boom* I'm dead :(" Resulving idea's: Think what the real soldiers had to put up with and TAKE COVER! AND TACTICS! STAY IN SQUADS, NEVER LEAVE SOME ONE BEHIND! RELOAD BEFORE GOING INTO COMBAT, AND USE IRONSIGHTS! AND ITS ALWAYS HARD TO SEE PEOPLE AT DISTANCES! THATS WHY YOU GET GLASSES! Thank you! Sweet ass game! The reason people complain on the game pace being slow and low loading itmes is this: They are noobs, it's as simple as that, they get killed all the time while playing, they have no clue where to go/what objectives to capture/defend And they did not bother for one second to go to the officla forums and tweak their game for better performance, I play ROOST with great graphics, fast loading times, and I just own in online play *brag* Expand

I played this game for 10 minutes before getting bored... the gameplay may be realistic, but the lack of crosshairs (including the fact that the crosshair wouldn't stay in the middle of the screen) ruins this game entirely... the controls are annoying and difficult to use... you have to walk (or drive) for an hour before you even start to engage in combat.. you dont have a radar either... this is one of the worst games i've ever played... doesnt deserve a solid 10. If you want a FUN fps experience play either cs:s, dod:s or tf2. the only reason this game gets a 1 is because the graphics are ok Expand

To be blunt there are many things that SHOULD come as standard in a FPS thesedays. Some of these are lacking - mainly in the graphics area. Tanks get stuck on stupid stuff - like thin trees which is really frustrating in a game that is trying to be as realistic as possible. Also, you are not too sure whats going on at times and after the ultrarealism was off you are left with a bitter taste in your mouth as you realise your playing a game because you wanted a game!!! For all its bad points, however, you will go back to it and it will grow on you - because for all its bad points it does have gameplay. Let's face it after playing games like COD4 BF2, 2142 and Crysis - you'd forgotten what gritty gameplay and skill was. You get hit in the chest with a .50 cal?? No problem. But, in Ostfront your down like a sack of s*it. Suddenly, you have to use real skill and the buzz you get from getting kills is excellent. IIf you want to run around like a headless chicken - then this is not for you. If you want to play with the big boys and want a solid, historically accurate and deep game then buy this Expand

For me, it completely fails to surpass the likes of COD 4. Having never taken part in WWII, I can't judge the game on it's realism. But I'm assuming "reallism" means the game's agonizingly slow and unforgiving nature, which it is, but for a game these are not qualties for enjoyment. The controls are unwieldly, the time it takes to aim down the iron sights is painful and the best tactic is to camp in a good spot. Realistic or not I don't like it Expand

worst game ever controls are terrible as compared to the popular games like counter strike source or Day of defeat source which is a much better wwii game. The game provides no crosshair or whatsoever and its wayy to slow paced, lack of sniper classes. 0/10 only thing that was good about it was its maps.

Best game ever...got the game since 3 years now and have not seen any better game till now...the aim system is the thing that makes the game great, no stupip aiming with a circle in middle of screen like in call of duty world at war, and no silly scripted show...its real action.

If you don't play this game since months or years you won't have a chance to survive...not even 3 minutes. There are so many positions (and also BUG positions you can't even know them if you don't play in a pro clan). The aiming looks very cool but just for a short time. Bugs are included like holes in a piece of cheese. My advice: If you love clan playing= play it...you can learn how to have fun in this game. But if you just want a WW2 game for fun=STOP. Expand

Amazing game with possibly the most realist portrail of world war 2 and with the now development enforces mods of both the African and Western frounts it make for one complete realistic world war 2 battle field experience, the only down side is possibly over realism with out cross hairs you have to shoulder your rifle to make a shot count even then you character can flintch at the wrong second and spoil the ambush a great game for those of us who enjoy a break from bunny hopping but the casual player would be turned away. This is a difficult game. But that is what makes it great. It is my favorite game, second only to BF1942. It takes what should have been included in Forgotten Hope and wraps it all into one game with 2 mods. The thing that sold me on the game was the Eastern Front.

The ease of use with this game is very high. Finding servers and friends is easy and reliable. Downloading and installing is almost effortless. the game has a manual with relevant info and the menus are well laid out. Really the only challenging thing about the game is surviving. You have to be smart to survive. if your not you have two choices. learn to fight smart, or get used to respawning.

I pre-ordered this game thrusting steam would not put anything worthless in their system. This is by far the worst game I have ever played. It is a waste of time money and bandwidth. The movies and the screen shots looks great but that is not what you get in the game. Movement is slugish the graphics are based on the outdated Unreal engine (yes this is not a source engine game). And if plan on playing a slodier you may forget that as well. the maps are huge and you "have to" drive something. and of course you are seeing everything from a 1x4 inch screen. The only people who will love this game are the snipers who like to camp in one position. I would have donated the money wasted on this game to a charity. at least it would have done some good. Now it is used by Tripwire to make more useless games... I w?ould have give -10 if I was given the option. Do not buy! Avoid like the plaque. Expand

The graphics are great, I turned all mine up to max and it still runs smooth (P4 3.0, 1 gig RAM, Nvidia 5700LE vcard). The maps are great eye candy. You have to get used to iron sights (no crosshairs, on any gun), and some realistic slow reloads and rifle cocking, but it is worth it.

I think the game is pretty good as a whole. The infantry fighting is not very intuitively put together. They should have been more like DoD:S in that aspect. The best parts of the game are the armored vehicles, tank operation, and artillery calls. This aspect is absolutely awesome! If they replaced infantry fighting with DoD:S infantry fighting, it would easily be the greatest WWII FPS ever. The tanks are really the coolest part, though. I can't emphasize that more! Expand

This game is a complete failure: Its graphics are lousy, the game interface could be greatly improved, and the whole game, itself, does not work well. Although the game attempts to be realistic, it does not succed too well. I also noticed that the single-player mode honestly sucks: The bots have the intelligence equal to a bar of soap! I think that the designers should either remove the single-player mode or improve the bots AI pathing. THe multiplayer, on the other hand is mediocre. The player bases is small and the bugs are very very dismall. The last time I played this wretched game, it was not unheard of for me to fall through the ground and get stuck in-between things. I have to honestly say, "This game has a great idea but it is lacking the required material in orde for it to be successful and decent!" Expand

There are some bugs in the game but they are not disrupting the true feeling. This game brings more to the table than any other WW2 FPS on the market. RO is nothing at all lke call of duty you must work as a team to achieve goals and command certain outposts. The range of weapons and classes allowed changes on each map. There's very little gameyness in RO and a whole lot of gritty crawling along the ground so you can flank over to that machine gunner and allow your team to advance to the next spawn point objective.
  3. Red Orchestra is an enjoyable, team-based online shooter for those who like the Battlefield-style games but want a more technical and realistic experience.
