Rock of Ages has faults - it's samey and repetitive in long-play sessions, for example, and if the trailers don't tickle you then there's little chance the full game will impress. However, considering the low price and artistic spark that lies at the heart of the game, Rock of Ages becomes a difficult game to turn down, even if the mechanical side of the experience doesn't quite rival the creative side, and there are occasional glitches with the physics of enemy AI.

A lot of people out there calling themselves gamers like to cry about there not being enough creativity in the land of game development. Well Ace Team sets out to prove them wrong. They may have only released two games, Rock of Ages and Zeno Clash, but both of these titles try to do bold things with games both in the art style and interesting gameplay developments. In the least give the demo for this one a whirl. Hopefully it'll grown on you as quickly as it grew on us!

Rock of Ages is one of the cleverest PC titles I've played this year, and for only $10 on Steam, you really can't go wrong. I loved the arcade approach to tower defense and especially all the hilarious animated skits between chapters. Whether you play on PC or console, make sure to play Rock of Ages. It's great fun for the entire family.

Funny, stylish and very entertaining game that built its gameplay on simple combination of two well-known gaming concepts and it's done in a truly remarkable way.

Rock of Ages is a bizarre and unique game that mixes the strategy of a tower defence game with the balance and craziness of a Super Monkey Ball game. The result is great but the often slow camera movements and mediocre graphics might put you off.

This is a game about smashing up artwork with a big rock, and there's nothing wrong with that. [Holiday 2011, p.79]

The brilliant rock-rolling simulator from ACE is an ironic blast and an artistic achievement of the indie scene. Despite its poor balancing and short campaign, rolling boulders to smash known historical characters is a ton of fun.

Remains fun despite its problems, and makes for some great local competitive play.

An enjoyable and, dare I say, cozy game, even though it has neither flashy graphics, nor innovative gameplay ideas, nor much variety.

Its creative and quirky nature is let down by mechanics that don't feel strongly realised, Rock of Ages is still good for the occasional roll. [Christmas 2011, p.67]

Funny arcade with Tower Defense elements offers straightforward playability which entertains for some time. In small batches it is great – just don't try to beat the game at once. [Oct 2011]

It's worth to take a look at this title and its unique art direction. Unfortunately it quickly becomes clear that Rock of Ages' rules are too simple to provide a deep enough gameplay. [October, p.59]

While its mechanics can become tiresome the further you progress, ACE Team's signature presentation and wry humor manage to pull it through. Just like Zeno Clash before it, Rock of Ages as a whole is unlike any other game I've played or seen before, and that's a rare thing to be able to say.

It's fun, but not for very long. The ideas deserved a better game, but it's still a nice change from the typical first person shooter and it's not expensive at all.

Rock of Ages is what Monty Python would make if they decided to do a tower defenсe game. [Nov. 2011, p.97]

Rock of Ages combines strategy and dexterity in an original and wacky game. The solo campaign is a little quick and easy to overcome and the multiplayer clearly lacks some options as well as players. But despite this, you'll get value for its price, so just buy it: the more do it, the less this last shortcoming will fade.

This was a really refreshing take on gaming. Well designed with funny interludes. The game-play really makes this worth the money. I'd be looking forward to their next game. Highly recommended. Full Review »
  2. Totally funny. I love it. It's not just another generic game. It's refreshingly orignal. great work, ace team. Multiplayer is also very funny. build traps for the enemie's boulder and crush the game of your steam-friends. Controlls are pretty good. easy controll with keyboard and mouse. also played the xbox version which is also good, but PC version is much much much better. Full Review »
  3. We all know that there is a lot of people complaining about the defense system, but they really need to know that the game have a completely nice defense system in the versus match and in works if you know where to place your units, because in case you place all of your defenses you'll fail instantly and that would become a boulder race to the gates. The story was extremely fun and with an amazing artwork, the cut scenes are hilarious and the historical events were chosen correctly. ACE team managed to create a game completely unique. Same as Zeno Clash. If they are making another one, i would probably pre ordered it instantly. 10/10 because it was bloody hilarious and the multiplayer is so intense in ways that i can't even describe. Totally worth the 9.99 dollars on Steam. Full Review »
