Runescape 3 is pretty cool with all the new graphics and stuff added to it. Before it was pretty boring, now it seems pretty freaking awesome! People call Runescape 3 a nerdy game, I could agree, it is possibly a game for people who are nerds. However, it doesn't make the game that bad. Its lustrous background and music fit together perfectly, and I think it's just a game that has awesome written all over it. Expand

Runescape is a web-based MMORPG that makes use of the Javascript engine to make the game stable in a web browser. Runescape first launched in 1998 and saw immense success until around 2007, when many players began to leave the game behind for more enticing titles such as World of Warcraft. Let's see if the latest installment can hold a candle to games released by the likes of more prominent developers, such as League of Legends Blizzard's titan ruler World of Warcraft.

Graphics: Runescape 3 has a few key differences from Runescape 2, most notably the graphics system. Runescape 3 utilizes cell-shaded polygon-type visuals to produce extremely pleasing graphics that even hardcore players can commend. The issue with the graphics system is that, because it's so intense, it requires A LOT of bandwidth to enjoy. Even players with top-notch gaming rigs will have issues processing this game if their internet connection is even slightly subpar. Despite this, the graphics are fantastic for a 3rd party title. It should also be noted that the soundtracks in this game are great.

Gameplay: Runescape 2 recieved a lot of criticism for it's gimicky and outright cheesy storyline implementations later in it's run, and Jagex hasn't improved on that at all. The story is extremely gimicky, and the tutorial levels are extremely tedious. While the introductory phases are necessary to thoroughly enjoy the game, Runescape 3 does little to impress those who are into the lore of games, and these intro levels will definitely make sceptical players turn their heads away from this game completely. Following the intro, however, the game takes off into an extremely vast do-as-you-please world, in which you can quest, level skills, take part in PvP, and enjoy all the other great RPG features this game has to offer. My own personal complaint is that, as a returning player, a lot of level requirements for items I worked tirelessly to get have changed and I can no longer use many of these valuable items. Bummer.

Community: Without a doubt, the reason for Runescape's declining popularity is definitely it's community. While some are easy-going and mature players, many (most) are immature young kids who really bring down the game. In the past year or so, however, what with Runecape's less idiot-friendly interface, the community is making it's way back up.

Hardcore or Casual?: Definitely casual. Don't get me wrong, you can play this game for hours and hours, but odds are you won't be really into it for much longer than two hours at a time.

Bottom Line: Runescape 3 is a huge improvement over Runescape 2, and I personally enjoy playing it. Are there issues? Of course. Every game has issues, and that goes double for indie games. But for an indie release, this game definitely brings more to the table than to be expected of a typical web browser game.

A dysfunctional Ultima Online. That's how I would sum up Runescape 3.

There are many aspects that shine, like the quests, which are very well done, but the functionality overall is just very poor.

I'm a member and run the game through the client, and there is constant stutter. Same with running it through Chrome or Firefox. Every time it loads new textures, it loads them like a webpage, which causes the streaming to blip. The game requires Java runtime. Anyone who knows coding, Java is an interpreted language (not compiled) which is extremely inefficient. Java requires a runtime environment to work, or an interpreter, which literally translates the source code on the fly as it runs. The game is extremely limited and lag infested because of this. Controls are clunky. Every action has a noticeable delay to it. It's point and click. You point and click, and wait 1/2 second for your input to be interpreted by the server. Basically, it's a browser game that attempts to be more.

I love everything RS3 tries to accomplish, even if it is a direct rip off of Ultima Online. My biggest problem aside from the horrible performance is there is no party system. It's a touchy topic with the RS crowd. Sure there was no party system in the UO days, but you'd still gain skill points for combat if you were attacking something. In RS3 if your friend hits a mob first, you don't get anything, no skill increase or loot nothing. There's is absolutely no incentive to group up(which you can't do anyway), or play with others. Strangers will stand there and watch you die, because they gain nothing from helping you (yes the MMO crowd does not typically hold higher values, sadly). There is supposed to be a loot share system, but I have yet to see it actually work. Regardless, trying to play with friends is like existing in parallel universes where neither experience the glory of combined effort. Hell, you can't even see one another on the mini-map, there aren't even name tags! Horrid nightmare.

A lot of what RS3 touts as features are really just limitations of the programming platform. It becomes more and more noticeable as you play.

Anyway it's a sad mess really. Every time I play I ask myself, "why am I not playing Ultima Online?" The reality is is that I always wanted an Ultima Online with a more modern graphics engine, and aside from SWG, RS3 I guess is as close as it's going to get. But I don't think I'll renew my sub... hopefully ESO will fill the void.

It's tough, there is a lot of charm in Runescape 3, but the technical folly's keep it in the odd-bin of games.

They made me pay months for a membership just for me to log in after not playing for a month to tell me i was permanently banned for an account of "macroing" when I have never done such a thing. It is nearly impossible to make money or have fun in runescape because of the horrible amount of bots and macroers. I reported them every time I saw them yet runescape NEVER did anything about them and instead chooses to ban ME for absolutely no reason. Not to mention they will not refund you, ever unban your account, or even show you the evidence for their own mistake. I have been playing this game for over 2 years and I find it horrible that they would do this to someone. They won't answer any attempt at contacting them about it and they could care less about their players. I would reccomend NEVER playing this game unless you want to bore yourself and be robbed of 100s of hours of your life and all of your money just for the jagex team to wrongly ban your account and not show you evidence of their reason for banning you or allow you to contact them about it. One of the WORST games on the web. Expand
