  1. The best $20 computer game we've ever played.
  2. An essential purchase for anyone who's ever enjoyed being on the right end of a shotgun.
  3. 100
Sam (sets itself apart) by it’s sense of humor and easy to learn controls. It’s also one of the brighter shooters, with lots of outside and aboveground levels mixed in with all of the dungeon crawling.
  4. The most fun I have had in a straight shoot'em up FPS in a hell of a long time.
  5. Nice to see a game that gets back to the basics of FPS genre with puzzles, storyline, TONS of killing bad guys, and end-of-level bosses.
  6. Brainless running and gunning is an underappreciated way to waste a couple of hours with a great-looking game. [Feb 2003, p.94]
  7. (The engine) not only renders huge environments and complex architectures with nary a hiccup, but can also handle massive amounts of enemies and, in general, kick your ass without a second thought.
  8. 90
One of the most impressive features of the Serious engine is the sheer number of models it can handle at one time without any noticeable slowdown.

Serious Sam has some of the most exciting and addictive shooting action in years.
  10. It's a great looking, fun-filled game that has plenty of visceral thrills and absolutely, positively the biggest battles in any shooter to date.
  11. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I've never been so addicted to a shooter. Maybe it's the fact the game keeps hammering me, but I can't get enough. I can't tell you how many times I muttered "this is ridiculous" or "you've got to be kidding" while playing the game, but I still love it.
  12. It actually lives up to the hype, and even surpass is it if you can believe that.
  13. While Serious Sam may not reinvent the first-person shooter, Croteam did a great job of taking the genre back to its roots, making one of the most action-packed games since "DOOM."
  14. An old-school, first-person shooter -- and damn proud of it. That it also happens to be white-knuckle thrilling, spectacularly beautiful, and totally captivating is what makes it so special.
  15. If you like mindlessly shooting things (like me), buy this game! Well worth the bang!
  16. Though this game features cartoon-like violence with human creatures to kill, these shortcomings are all culturally based (who says cartoon violence isn't bloody or shocking? and who says we only have to kill humans?).

It's not the most prolific game released recently, and with some real zeal you can probably thrust through it in a matter of hours, not days. But for the price…
  18. Far from what its name might suggest but as trigger happy fun goes, you won't get much better. Serious Sam? Rubbish name, great game.
  19. Plays a lot like "Doom," but with more enemies. Way more. Like, the most EVER. And they just keep coming and coming, like roaches to a donut.
  20. A throwback to the good old days of unadulterated combat with boatloads of wacky enemies and sci-fi weapons. Action fans will love this game.
  21. It's a fun game for those looking for a 3D shooter gone back to the basics, offering not only a fantastic array of weapons, but incredible graphics, stunning levels and hours of non-stop bullet-spraying frenzy.
  22. Just firing this beast up, and blasting some bad guys without a care in the world feels very refreshing.
  23. If you want your challenge to come from a game that gets your rocket-launcher firing, grab your $20 and head to the store.
  24. The combat is awesome in short doses, the graphics are nice and the product offers the best FPS co-op gaming since Doom II. Oh, and it offers one hell of a final boss.
  25. This is the best dose of pure visceral excitement to hit shooters in years.
  26. A decent interactive shooting gallery at a bargain price. [June 2001, p.56]

Serious Sam was born into a world where "Doom" has placated the need for logical thought and lives in a world governed by the visceral.
  28. If you're looking for a big gun and a legion of monsters to use it on, then Serious Sam's got what you need, with much prettier graphics than "Doom."
  29. It isn't a terrible gaming experience, especially for those with an itchy trigger finger, but there is no improvement from previous games and some regression concerning weapon and monster design.
  30. I had pretty high hopes for the title, and ultimately, I was let down more than a kid who got socks and underwear for Christmas. If you're in the market for an FPS game, go pick up "Painkiller." Same type of gameplay, much less headaches. [June 2004]
