  1. With so many competing FPS games on the market, Red Mercury falls sadly below par..."Splinter Cell" meets "Serious Sam." Not too bad. Not very good. [Dec 2004, p.90]
  2. Great for old-school action fans. Repetitive and dull for everyone else.
  3. One of the few shining edges Shadow Ops has is in the audio department. Taking full advantage of the now widely used THX sound scheme, the game convincingly places you in an aural war zone.
  4. There is nothing in Shadow Ops that will spoil the fun, I think it is an excellent game. If you like a challenge with objectives to achieve, rather than just running around killing everything that moves, give Shadow Ops Red Mercury a go.
  5. 70
Yes, it has some glaring AI problems, some repetitive and overly simplistic gameplay aspects. And yeah, one of the final cut-scenes, where our hero lands on a speeding train, is about as PlayStation One graphics as it gets.
  6. Stunted gameplay and lackluster story, paired with some good excitement, and AI that can only be described as dumber than a doorknob doesn’t make for a good combination, but there’s been far worse in the history of First Person Shooters.
  7. Shadow Ops is a rather bland, generic FPS that – aside from some good sound and all-round high production values – offers absolutely nothing in the way of originality.
  8. If you’re looking for a decent shooter you’ve come to the right place. Atari and Zombie could have done much better given the promise seen in the first few levels, but the poor level design and weak AI kill the game before it can truly get off the ground.
  9. It's basic, it's clichéd, it's blokey... oh, and it's expensive and short, but Shadow Ops: Red Mercury is still a hoot. If you're after a brainless gun-fest with plenty of blowing-up, give it a few months and see if you can pick it up on the cheap. [PC Zone]
  10. The game initially seems to offer everything you'd want out of an action-packed military-themed shooter. However, online multiplayer features are of little value when the action itself isn't good.
  11. It’s just a 12 to 14 hour example of untapped potential and a lot of things we’ve seen before.

Just so very average. It does nothing spectacular, nor does it do anything truly grievous. [Holiday 2004, p.96]

An average single-player game with competent but not brilliant multiplayer modes tacked onto the side. [Aug 2004, p.106]
  14. Computer Games Magazine

Just another military shooter swimming in a sea of camoflauge. [Dec 2004, p.83]
  15. 40
Just a first-person shooter with all the markings of mediocrity. It's got linear levels, an unimpressive arsenal, and simplistic shooter gameplay for both the single-player and multiplayer games.
  16. PC Gamer
    34
There's nothing here gameplay-wise that's new or original, or even competitive, given the season...The lag in online bouts is atrocious. [Holiday 2004, p.34]

Shadow ops is an ok game but it could have been much better, like the saving game system. The story needs more structure and its really scripted.

In the gaming World where First person shooter are in abundance, many people give a game a bad review because of just a few flaws. This can In the gaming World where First person shooter are in abundance, many people give a game a bad review because of just a few flaws. This can be the difference of it's Success or Failure. Shadow Ops:Red Mercury is your basic FPS Where you must Stop a Backpack Nuke from getting in the wrong hands and being used. Your Met with Fierce aggression and many perhaps too many enemies that pop out of nowhere at times. But this games Cinematic feels keeps you immersed in the action ducking to find cover and figure out where the hostiles are. You Team does a good job of helping take out some of the Enemies but you feel out numbered 5-1 at times. Your firefights are immense with exploding drums and grenades making it feel your in the middle of a real mission. This is No Call of Duty, But the action is intense. With Details such as breakable and movable objects thrown in the Game Comes alive with action. With all these Postives there is one major drawback which is no Quick saves along the way. So if you die during a mission you must start that level over. This can get frustrating but makes you proceed with caution next time which brings me to another negative, the enemies spawn in exact same areas, so its not hard to know whats coming and from where next time you play the level. This is no Blood or gore such as in Far Cry Or Doom3 But a pretty immersive FPS That will entertain the casual player for hours . Full Review »
