  1. Tactical combat in World War II with a realistic flair is Squad Assault: the Second Wave’s claim to fame.
  2. While we still admire the unique gameplay mechanics of Squad Assault, it certainly feels as though the series, as well as the technology, is being pushed a game too far with Second Wave.

Worth buying if you missed "West Front," but it's not the sequel fans were hoping for. [Dec 2005, p.85]
  4. An evolutionary step. It would be worse to not have a Squad Assault at all, but that being said, Second Wave is still deeply flawed.

There isn't much more here than we saw with Squad Assault: The West Front, when it comes right down to it. And with no facelift in the intervening years, it's going to have that much harder of a time appealing to the non-bearded types.

Mediocre "Close Combat" update, two years old already. [Christmas 2005, p.102]
