  • Summary: In Squad Assault: West Front, you command troops in both the Allied and German Armies of the West Front of World War II in an immersive full 3-D continuous time environment. Squad Assault: West Front features detailed models for all the major armies that fought in France in 1944, including American, German, British, Canadian, and Free French. For those who prefer traditional turn-oriented play, a user defined auto-pause feature for order entry and battlefield assessment allows for a more thoughtful game. A 2D overhead map view with order entry is also available for those who prefer to see the battle from above. [Matrix Games] Expand

  1. There's a comprehensive and remarkably easy-to-use scenario creator, too... Squad Assault is a delight. [Jan 2004, p.86]
  2. With a little more work on reforming the look of the title, tightening up movement orders in the 3D environment, and finding an easier on the eye way of presenting all of the information they manage to do at one time, Squad Assault could develop into an impressive franchise.
  3. Squad Assault is a real time strategy game at heart and if you’re familiar with the genre, you’ll get used to the game pretty quickly. The overall controls haven’t changed much over the years.
  4. It’s long, and it’s deep with ample replay potential for those of you that enjoy such games. Otherwise, it’s very hard to recommend to someone new to the genre. Once you get the hang of it, SAW is very well researched and quite challenging.
  5. What really hurts Squad Assault the most is a combination of the other surface elements, such as the lackluster maps, glitchy sounds, and a gameplay structure that could still use some smoothing out. However, I cannot deny that the menu and command interfaces are some of the most intuitively employable I’ve ever come across in a squad-based tactical game.
  6. An engaging wargame that has an interface amenable to the masses. The camera may not be smooth and there may be some quirks but this title enables casual gamers to become armchair generals.
  7. This design alley is a dead end. [Jan 2004, p.80]

Pretty Awful. Very few redeeming features. Several "features" mean you can't play this realisitcally, eg Troops do not occupy trenches when in full squads, meaning half of them wait around in front of the trench to get killed. Do yourself a favour, get Combat Mission Afrika Korp instead. You'll thank me. Expand
