At times, Survivalist feels more like work than a game, as Joe scrambles for supplies with no real sense of progression. If you're in the camp which feels that a good survival game needs to feel like work at times, Survivalist is a good choice for its price.
One of Survivalist's flaws is that it is too cheap, as its presented potential is worth much more than its price. You can't find a zombie game like this and it's the only one that tries to address with true the political essence of the apocalypse and the formation of a community. Here, death is only one. Your favorite character might die the first time you meet him and you'll have to deal with that, and it's this weight given to situations like this that really represents the zombie genre. Too bad it's still underrecognized, because playing online this game must be great, and the reason for not getting a ten is the low resource variability. Strange is, to say the least, the fact there are no melee weapons.
Great post apocalyptic survival game with rpg elements, character development, real time fights and most importantly base building. There are many choices and consequences in game and they're mostly ethical. If there was a more building options and weapons, i would give it 10/10 but i still think it deserves a 9 since it's an indie game developed by a very small team. I'm pretty sure it deserves that $4.99 price tag.
This game is superb. A complete, full game for one (extremely fair) price. No micro-transactions (Thank God)! This game has so many features, I won't bother listing them. And the best **** can win! This isn't one of those lame "survival" games that have no win conditions. An absolutely wonderful indie game with better production values than most so-called AAA games. A few interface issues make the game slightly less-than-perfect, but hardly ruin the game (conversations pop up when you near another character, sometimes interfering with what you are trying to do, for example, and it takes an unnecessary extra press of the F1 button to bring up a building's inventory....when it could easily just default to the inventory.) Still, small potatoes, compared to all the great features.
This is as the name of the game suggests
its a game were you & a group of Survivalists
most Survive in a post apocalyptic world
one thing i can say is that for an indie game made by a very small indie dev team
this game is amazing.
the game has a nice look to it
the game has a nice fiting soundtrack
the game has great animations
the game has a very nice torn-down beat up looking city
you can loot , you can craft , you can build bigger & better defenses for houes
you can fell the overall fell of the disaster that hit this games world & its after effects
the gameplay is very smooth & nice & easy to control
& there is a major plus to the contolrs you can play with keyboard & mouse or if you wish to do so you can even play it with an xb360 gamepad
i have to say that i am very impressed with this game
a indie game for 4.99 & its one of the better indie games here on steam
i say that its a must buy if you are looking for an indie game that has a decent story great use of music & just overall a fun game to play then pick up this game.
the only con i would give this game in a review is that the guns in the game they take a but of time to learn how to use them correctly at first i was shooting like a wild man & just missing my shots & waisting my bullets.
but after i learned how to control my shots i never missed a shot.
i give this game an 98 out of 100
i give it an 98 because of its an indie game made by a very very small dev team & what they made for there small team & extremely limted budget to make this game with i am very Pleasantly surprised with this game.
you should all buy it & at least give it a shot.
its only 4.99 usd & its very well worth the price.
Survivalist is a game akin to State of Decay that gives you control **** of survivors during the Zombie apocalypse. You start out with one guy exploring the world by doing quests and picking up other survivors on the way to form your own little community. There is a rudimentary source gathering mechanism to nourish your community, provide them with shelter and protection. There are quests, often quite elaborate, that keep you going.
There are notable differences with State of Decay. In Survivalist the most dangerous opponents are other humans and not the zombies. Also in Survivalist characters do have personalities that impact their behavior towards you and rubbing people the wrong way can make them leave and even hostile enough to refuse to help or join you during quests. Also while State of Decay stressed the importance of silent weaponry, with melee weapons and silenced guns, Survivalist has no melee weapons and stresses guns. There is a certain irony in that State of Decay offers a wide set of different fire-arms, while Survivalist has just five types. A last but not unimportant feature is that Survivalist allows you to control your survivors at the same time and create your own groups and send them off in different directions to do different tasks.
For me the main weakness of the game became glaringly noticeable on the second run through. Discovering the world took a backseat and I was aiming for doing things better and more quickly. And then Survivalist becomes a plodding game.
For the most part you are trudging from point a to point b and back again as part of quests and to gather resources. Early into the game you can't take much with you thus your characters have to go back and forth a lot. Some of this activity can be automated, but not everything. Especially some quests seems to consist of going to one side of the map and then to the other side of the map several times over and it feels a bit like that that chipmunk Ratatoskr from the Norse mythology that runs up and down the world tree to carry insults between an eagle in the crown and the dragon at the root.
Moving your base requires a herculean effort if don't do it early in the game, but even then it is boring work, especially as your community is constantly beset by roaming bands of zombies and looters.
The game becomes also wearisome because your survivors require a lot of looking after. If you don't they might get themselves or you killed, especially during battles. But even more, they will put on hold their assigned tasks to go in search for food and water or go and sleep, even when you want them to finish that final gate before the next zombie horde arrives. The only way to do that is by controlling that character yourself and wait around until it has finished the job.
Survivalist is a nice game the first time around, especially for the price, but when the thrill of the first time experience is gone it becomes a uninspiring game with too much walking and waiting for your characters to finish their assigned jobs. To go through it a second time requires from you to be a determined person. But maybe you are that person.
Post script:
One special mention I like to make is that the story line of the game has a few very sardonic twists, one that is tied in with the here and now. You have to wait till almost the end of the game for it.
I for one found this an interesting experience. The game is a great concept and really does draw you in to its world. Sadly the actual core mechanics of the game and quirky attributes make it very frustrating it times, forcing me to put it away after roughly 6 hours.
Those with more patience should get a lot of play time out of this. Still worth a look.
SummaryIt's one year after the collapse of civilization and self-centered hedge fund manager Joe Wheeler emerges from his specially constructed bunker in search of food. This is a huge open-world RPG where you have the freedom to play how you want - but your choices have consequences.
