    Kerberos has done a wonderful job trying to polish this game, the ideas behind it really are awesome. But, as a life long strategy gamer, I find myself playing a game that truly is still in beta a year after its release. The ui is not intuitive some basic game functions are hard to find and require reading the company forums to understand. The AI is like playing a toddler and even often kills itself rather then offer a challenge. There are numerous bugs while playing the game and a common theme seems to be that with every patch come new bugs, some worse then the ones that were fixed. The Enhanced Edition, in my opinion, moved this game from an alpha phase to a mid beta phase. But even facing bugs constantly and having the game CTD every 5 turns in one game it still gives me the "just one more turn" feeling. At least until you get to late game , which with the lacking diplomacy and intel options and with the need to extremely micro manage it just gets old. I would pass on purchasing this game until at least the next expansion, but if you do buy it you have been warned. Expand

    Sequel to one of my favorite strategy games of all time, SOTS 2 is prime example of ambitions overgrowing actual capabilities. Launch of the game was a disaster: it wasn't even a beta. Now, after tons of patches and free expansion with new playable race, Sots 2 is definitely better at every aspect - but it still falls way short of meeting expectations. It's very complex game, with great variety of options and possible strategies - however, it is also one of the least approachable games I have ever seen. Unclear interface, cryptic tooltips and utter lack of any tutorial in game are obstacles for any new players. If you manage to overcome them, you will find good sides of this game - and they are plenty. However, they all fade when you realize that AI is COMPLETELY broken, and does not present any threat whatsoever. Seriously - computer controlled empires not only cannot beat player, they also fail to defend against random encounters game throws at them and often collapse due to missmanegement of economy and mounting debt. I am willing to bet that anyone giving this game super-high score has not played it long enough to actually measure AI capabilities. Maybe after another year it will get acceptable - for now, if you value single player at least, I recommend to stay away from this game. Expand

    If you bought this game, I'm sorry you wasted your money. I bought this game thinking that it would be an improvement on the original, however it's not. Everyone is 100 times more complicated. The game is beyond buggy, and the managed to suck all the fun from it. This one will never be as good as the first.

    A long time has passed since launch, and SOTS2 is at last in a playable state although still very unstable on some machines. And straight it goes in the book called "what could have been great". This game is far too ambitious for what it manages to accomplish.

    Ship design is fun and allows for a lot of strategic depth, and this is where the "actually good bits" ends. While some battles
    are indeed fun, in this kind of game you do get a lot of very similar, repetitive battle. Well, you will have to fight ALL battles yourself, as the automated AI is dsurprisingly incompetent. There is something deeply wrong with how battles are handled and sometimes the best strategy is "point the ships far away and wait for the timer to run out".

    Random events become very annoying after a certain point: you will have to deal again and again and again with the same nuisances. Speaking of that, there are a lot of annoying things that shold just have been left out. Diplomacy is one of those. Either do it properly or don't do it at all. Another one is the lore, which is just embarassing. Just ignore it and look at the ships. Building freighters one by one instead of having a way to automate the process is just stupid.

    However, most of all, the excruciatingly slow pace coupled with the need to fight every battle make playing this game a very frustrating experience, and don't forget about the occasional bug that will simply make an entire fleet disappear, or a planet will stop being regarded as colonized for no reason and all ships in reserve will be lost.

    Too little, too late. The UI is terrible, the AI is terrible. If you must have a space empire builder buy its predecessor. no missions. tooltips are cryptic to say the least, so i suggest reading the manual before you even try to have a go.

    31 employees of Paradox writing reviews? I can't see how anyone would give this above a 6 rating. But the proof of the mater can probably be seen that only 43 people have bothered to review the game.

    More than a year after the initial release, this game has been polished, but it's a polished turd. None of the fun or playability of the first Sword of the Stars, the only thing that
    might be seen as an improvement is the ship models, but they are largely covered up by obnoxious looking "badges" that look like something from a 1980s clip-art collection, then once the fighting starts (if your game doesn't crash and you give up in frustration before you even meet another empire to fight) horribly garish disco lights are what we get for combat effects.

    Save your time, money and sanity and stay away from this title.

    Kerboros is a smaller development studio whose ideas are always much larger than their technical prowess. Kerberos games tend to be full of amazing ideas, and always drip with potential, but are ultimately ruined by bugs, glitches, poor optimization, or other technological snafus. So let it be with Sword of the Stars II. There is something unethical in releasing a somewhat fixed version of an older game that was utterly unplayable, slapping an "enhanced edition" moniker on it, and calling it a game...but that is exactly what you get here. A mostly working game that feels like it needs another six months in the incubator, even in later 2013. Expand

    Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition is getting there, three steps forward and two steps back. But for gods sake, start creating enemies, not stupid names with some attributes! And hey, diplomacy between mighty star empires is not handled by SMS messages! [Feb 2013]

    Sword of the Stars II is exhausting. It has a genius to its depth of strategy, customization, and lore, and its ambition is unmatched by perhaps any other 4X title out there, but trying to reach the fruit of any of those qualities leaves one fastened to the sappy bark of labyrinthine menus and a glacial pace. Amidst the high pedigree of the 4X genre, there simply is no reason to play this.

    A game that confuses "more" with "better" and "depth". A classic example of second-system effect. Every decade needs its own "Master of Orion 3", I guess.
