  1. Tales of Monkey Island is probably one of the best games that came out last year, and probably one of the best adventure games that has come out in recent memory.
  2. Tales of Monkey Island is an engaging and well written story that is a fun game to boot. Chapter Five struggles a little but ultimately brings the story to a fitting close.
  3. Even with a few hiccups along the way, most of them technical ones in the Wiiware version of the game, the story and characters more than make up for any of that.

Telltale delivers an episode that capitalizes on the story built in the first four. It's a thrilling, entertaining epitome of adventure games.
  5. Even out of Lucasarts' hands, Tales of Monkey Island remains right a staple of the genre. Any adventure fan should have this in their collection. We recommend you buy the whole package right now.
  6. Some clever puzzle work and manic action towards the end make for a good time.
  7. While not my favorite in the season, is wonderful in its own right, and does not, by any means, disappoint. It's a hilarious, outrageous conclusion, and one that any fan of the series will appreciate completely.

Tales of Monkey Island is one of the mos frantic and fun adventures out there, specially from the third chapter. Telltale Games has not resurrected Guybrush just to make profits, but to create a new set of adventures that work perfectly.
  9. 85
The last chapter is also the best, rounding out Telltale's most enjoyable episodic series to date.
  10. Rise of the Pirate God continues the Tales of Monkey Island fittingly: Both the good and bad sides of the concept are back. Still: I'm looking forward to the next season - but hopefully with many improvements!
  11. These puzzles thankfully improve on the last episode's heavily unbalanced array of mostly bewildering conundrums. And after a not-so-funny fourth episode, the fifth raises its rib-ticklers to previous levels of hilarity.

A worthy way to end this series; one that got better as time has gone by. [Mar 2010, p.82]

I think this is the best episode of the entire season. The writing is great, the conflicts are interesting, the jokes are funny and the payoff lives up to the promise. The only downside is that the puzzles are much too straightforward in the beginning so the game essentially solves itself as you move from one area to the next.
  14. Episode 5 is a good season finale for Tales of Monkey Island. It closes the story arch while providing good fun and some nice, maybe too easy to solve puzzles.
  15. In my opinion, everyone should play Rise of the Pirate God! The last part presents Monkey Island at its best. Graphics are not overwhelming, but the game lives from its atmosphere.

I hope we don't have to wait another 10 years for more. [Mar 2010, p.81]
  17. Rise of the Pirate God is the grand season finale of Tales of Monkey Island, and it delivers. TellTale created an outstanding season from the beginning, and the great ending is just a fact of its greatness. But it's also true that they can do a better job, as they did with the second season of Sam & Max; hope they reach those heights with Monkey Island too.
  18. With Rise of the Pirate God, Telltale sums up a marvelous season with a great final episode. Now we can only hope for a second season.

With solid gameplay and humor to spare, Rise of the Pirate God provides a fitting ending to a fun story. That leaves newcomers the task of doing what series vets have been up for since July -- getting on board.
  20. In spite of this chapter's sometimes bland early tone and uneven puzzle mechanics, Rise of the Pirate God and the series as a whole both come with my highest recommendation as a modern adventure genre must-play.
  21. Although it's not the perfect, laugh-out-loud ending we all wanted, The Rise of the Pirate God is still one of the best chapters of the five part series.
  22. AceGamez
In the end, there’s nothing particularly remarkable about the last of the Tales of Monkey Island, but, like the finest of the four chapters before it, Rise of the Pirate God stands as a faithful recreation of a world and a cast of characters many players have longed to return to.
  23. Telltale has redefined what a LucasArts adventure can be, turning a comedy adventure into a comedy drama, and we're sure it will have a lasting effect on where the franchise goes from here. [Feb 2010, p.130]
  24. PC PowerPlay
A nice-enough end to a stellar first episodic outing, but some will find the puzzles lacking. [Feb 2010, p.61]
  25. Total PC Gaming
The series hinges on a great ending, and Chapter 5 delivers. [Issue#30, p.52]
  26. Rise of the Pirate God does a nice job of closing out this adventure while also setting the stage for the next, but it still manages to fall short of perfection in several key areas.
  27. While earlier installments had more interesting interaction between the characters, Rise of the Pirate God ends the series on a high note, gameplay-wise.
  28. As part of the bigger picture, ToMI:5 finally draws the tale to a close, bringing satisfaction to everyone who has played all the other chapters up until now. Yes, it is short, but it handles the material well and is a must-buy for any series fans.
  29. However, standing alone, Telltale Games can and has done much better than Chapter 5.
  30. A largely satisfying ending for what has been a frustratingly uneven season of graphic adventures.
  31. Pity. This is the first word that we will come to mind just starts to scroll the credits. Pity about the excellent progress that the series had taken and the original ideas that the guys at Telltale had pulled out of the hat. Perhaps the end is not that healthy dose of courage and "madness" to overturn the cliches of the series. To sum up all the entire chapter but we can not but be more than satisfied. Stay with us waiting for a second season.
  32. If you were hoping that Tales of Monkey Island would at least end in some kind of fireworks of ideas, you will be disappointed. Dull and without creativity, this is how Telltale ends the series. It's well meant, but disappointing. It's not bad, but just not enough for Monkey Island.
  33. Yes, many of the puzzles were kind of underwhelming, and yes, some of the most dramatically important scenes were severely undercut by Telltale's technically limited engine (the episode 4 finale is so almost-incredible it actually hurts), but hey -- it's Monkey Island, man. A pretty significant part of me can't help but love it, despite all its flaws.

It's not the hardest chapter despite being the last, this one concentrates more on narrative and tying up all the loose ends. I think this finale, and perhaps the whole season, eclipsed Escape and cements itself as a worth entry in the Monkey Island series. While I still dream of a new full next-gen MI game, I'd also be happy to see Telltale make more Tales as good as these. Full Review »

The Rise of the Pirate God may be a bit too easy, but not short of perfect as an ending to a great chapter in the Monkey Island series. A The Rise of the Pirate God may be a bit too easy, but not short of perfect as an ending to a great chapter in the Monkey Island series. A truly epic final battle (perhaps one of the most amazing in the series) closes the tale, leaving you hungry and excited for the next game. The design is definitely unique, with the spirit world being almost like a pirate heaven. Good fun, assuming you've played (and loved) the past four chapters, there is no reason you shouldn't, and wouldn't pick this up. 9/10 for this chapter, but 10/10 on Tales of Monkey Island as a whole.
